Quality That Convinces - 3H
Spring 2013
Dear Readers,
Surfaces are increasingly becoming a sign and a
distinguishing feature for furniture. And with a variety that continuously increases. From high gloss
to matt, from textured to smooth, with ornamentation or veneer, coloured, black or white. Many
of these surfaces are produced at Wiemann, a
furniture manufacturer that has been making furniture for many years with products from 3H, especially because of the variety of possibilities
they offer for application (pages 2+3).
Apropos coloured surfaces: With “Full Color
Printing” we have opened a new chapter in
coloured decoration that should provide further
impetus to the trend in the direction of vivid, plain
colours. Another article will inform you about
what can be achieved with a combination of indirect gravure and classic, UV roller coating
(pages 4 + 5). We have also developed some
new products in the hydro lacquer range. Because of their specifically developed properties,
they are real, eco-friendly alternatives to solvent
based lacquers (page 6).
In addition, you will find a report on interlübke, a
traditional furniture manufacturer that has designed exclusive hotel furnishings coated with
lacquers from 3H for a hotel on the North Sea island, Norderney. Perfectly formed and finely finished, they help to ensure an unforgettable
holiday (page 7).
And last not least, we look forward to the future
and the ZOW 2013 trade fair in Bad Salzuflen
where we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you personally (page 8).

Continuity Is a Recip
The furniture-maker, Mathias Wiemann GmbH & Co. KG, located in
Oesede, Germany, never appears as
a name brand of its own. The furniture manufacturer, located in
Georgsmarienhütte, supplies wholesalers such as Musterring in Germany and also exports its furniture
to neighbouring European countries. Due to the multitude of customers, furniture in a great variety is
produced, a variety that is especially
reflected by the surface refinement
it receives. Wiemann GmbH & Co.
KG has relied on products from 3HLacke for decades.
The interaction between the quality of
the lacquer, materials and the machines used as well as the competence of the furniture manufacturer
when it comes to application have to
be perfectly coordinated. A mutual understanding of the situation and possibilities on the side of the user as well
as the supplier is a basic requirement.
This does not take place overnight but
needs years and sometimes even
decades to develop – as the case between Wiemann and 3H where cooperation has meanwhile functioned
for generations.
At the plant in Georgsmarienhütte, Wiemann produces different collections of
bedroom furniture, consisting of closets and cabinets, chests of drawers,
sideboards and beds. These are all
produced 100 percent in Germany.
Markus Wiemann runs the Wiemann
company as owner and managing director, now in the fourth generation.
“Since the company was founded in
the year 1900, continuity has been
one of our recipes for success”, he
says – and means not only continuity
in the team of employees but also in
the relationship with suppliers.
A good number of young people are
also trained by the company to make
sure there is continuity in their skilled
employees. At present, there are 20
apprentices. Among its suppliers, 3H
is a perfect example of a long-term cooperation based on trust. This is
clearly demonstrated by Georg Leckelt, a man from 3H, who has been a
permanent fixture at Wiemann for
more than three decades where he fine
tunes lacquering processes.
“Over the many years of our business
relations, we have always supplied lacquer components that meet the respective technical requirements”,
remembers Georg Leckelt. “Right now,
we supply Wiemann with modern, low
emission systems and, to a great extent, with water based lacquers. This

is quite a demanding task since Wiemann not only uses roller and spraying
processes but also direct printing.
Three completely different processes
which must each be consistent in and
of themselves but which place absolutely different requirements on the
lacquers and printing inks used. An extensive range of whites for the rolling
line is a part of the programme just like
lacquering solid wood elements in a
spraying procedure.
One of the greatest challenges is the
combinability of the surfaces of the
different furniture parts which, when

assembled, result in the piece of furniture. “Metamerism, touch and radiance must all fit together so that the
final product has a pleasing, overall
harmonious look”, explains the Technical Director, Karlheinz Bögeholz.
For a long time now, the subject of
surfaces has not been a subject that
only deals with lacquers. “This is
more about finding high-tech solutions that result in first class utilisation
properties in an optimised but also
economical
process”,
explains
Bögeholz. With 3H and its tailor-made
lacquers, Wiemann has exactly the
right partner.

Coloured Surfaces at a Ne
Among the current trends in surfaces in the furniture industry are
vivid, plain colours. There are limits to realising these colours with
the economical and efficient UV
roller lacquers. So 3H-Lacke
thought about a new approach and
found a solution in the graphic arts
industry. Printing techniques can
achieve exactly what is very difficult to do with conventional roller
coating: absolutely homogeneous
surfaces with extremely low application rates.
with decoration. With this process,
very consistent and low application
rates of just 3 to 5 g/m² can be
achieved. Two printing presses are
needed to apply plain colours which,
as opposed to decorative printing, do
not need to run synchronously.
means, there are no curing problems
caused by the absorption of UV radiation by some of the coloured pigments. That is also the reason why
there are no limits whatsoever to the
shades of colours that can be used,
even extremely vivid colours.
The colour-giving material used is a
water based printing ink. Since printing ink dries purely by physical
Indirect gravure is already used in the
furniture industry for the production of
decorative films as well as for direct
printing of panel materials. So why
not combine the indirect gravure
printing process with conventional,
UV roller coating.
With Full Color Printing, surfaces are
printed instead of lacquered. Instead
of using a lacquer roller in a continuous process, a real printing press is
used. In this case, an engraved roller
with a special surface geometry is
used instead of an engraved roller

This technology can be integrated at
any time into existing flat coating
lines. If the printing presses have
been constructed so that they are
mobile in the production line, different shades of colours can be used
without losing much time by exchanging the presses or white can be
used as a standard colour alternating
with a plain colour. This has the advantage that even small lot sizes can
be economically produced.
Various finishes, from matt to silk
gloss right up to high gloss are possible. Beautiful high gloss surfaces
can be achieved, e.g. through conventional grooved rubber rollers (rilli
rollers). An alternative for panel goods
is the so-called calandar-inert method
developed by Hymmen. With this
method, high gloss surfaces can be
achieved that are distinguished by
extreme resistance – also to
scratches – as well as especially
smooth and uniform surfaces.
In summary, Full Color Printing allows
the most economical realisation of an
extended colour spectrum. Surfaces

with gold or copper effects are also
possible which can even be further
enhanced with a high gloss finish.
Along with visual advantages, Full
Color Printing can achieve stable
shades of colour through controlled
application rates. Not only that, the
technology is also very interesting because of its flexibility in regard to
changing colours and small lot sizes.
With Full Color Printing, 3H-Lacke
has opened a new chapter on high
quality surface lacquering with
coloured and effect lacquers.

Coloured Hydro Lacquers with High Surface Quality
Resistant and Lightfast
If you are looking for lacquers that
are extremely resistant for your surfaces – perhaps for kitchen fronts –
you will learn to appreciate the new
hydro lacquer H3012 in the selected
shade of colour. After curing, the 2component formulation based on a
water miscible binder is exceedingly
resistant to heavy mechanical loads
and the influence of chemicals.
Along with high surface quality, optical and haptic quality are convincing.

solvent based, 2-component lacquers.
With this product, surfaces can be refined and protected in an environemtally correct manner. There is also an
“S” version which is a textured version
of the hydro lacquer.
Because solvent content is very low,
H3012 in the selected shade of colour
is a true alternative to conventional,
Clear Hydro Lacquer That Cures Quickly
Perfectly Coated Profiles
In the clear hydro lacquer area, 3H has
developed the new H1050K-GG as an
eco-friendly alternative to NC lacquers. The water dilutable lacquer
system with the “GG” suffix, which
stands for differently adjustable degrees of gloss, is special because it
contains around 90 percent less solvents than conventional products.
Fast drying and rapid development of
hardness are two of its outstanding
properties. When force dried in a
multi-level dryer, the elements can be
stacked or assembled after approx. 45
minutes. The single component hydro
lacquer is excellently suited for coating proflied furniture fronts by means
of automatic spraying units. Due to its
special rheology, the lacquer does not
collect in profiles or form cracks.
6
High wet transparency and extremely
good flow in spite of its thixotropic
consistence ensure very clear, hard
and optically pleasing surfaces that
also convince because of their good
grip and high build. Another benefit is
optimum lightfastness, although the
natural change in the colour of the
wood itself cannot be prevented. All in
all, H1050K-GG has properties that are
normally extremely difficult to achieve
with a single component system – especially very good emphasis of the
grain and resistance to chemicals.

Georgshöhe
Island Dreams in White
Located right in the middle of the
Wadden Sea World Heritage, the
island of Norderney has earned a
reputation as an exclusive holiday
goal. The Strandhotel Georgshöhe
has a lot to do with this – and not
just because of its location in the
so-called ‘spray zone’ directly on
the water. The 4-star Superior Spa
and Resort Hotel combines design-oriented interior architecture
with a classic facade in a most
unique manner. During the most
recent renovation and expansion
measures, the Sigges family,
which owns the hotel, decided on
system furniture made by interlübke.
interlübke, a furniture manufacturer
with an old tradition, located in
Rheda-Wiedenbrück, and a family
run enterprise just like the Strandhotel Georgshöhe, has furnished living
spaces with exclusive commodes,
closet systems, shelves and tables
of exceptional quality for more than
seventy years. Furnishing hotels is
one of interlübke’s main strengths –
always with the goal in mind of combining the yearning of the guest for a
comfortable home during his stay
with the desire of the hotel owner for
furnishings that are representative
yet easy care.
3H Aktuell Spring | 2013
During several construction phases
over the course of the last five years, a
total of 132 rooms and suites were redecorated. The concept was based on
three colours: mother of pearl white,
cappuccino combined with matt and
high gloss wood surfaces. Since the
two companies from the eastern part
of Westphalia have worked together as
partners for years, 3H-Lacke supplied
interlübke with the required quality of
mother of pearl white.
The sideboards, interior fittings for the
walk-in closets, night tables and television tables were produced in
Rheda-Wiedenbrück with the wellknown interlübke precision and quality. The brilliance of the high gloss
lacquers is the result of up to 15 steps
of repeated lacquering, sanding and
polishing. That is what makes the
outer skin of the furniture not only
especially resistant but also lightfast
and colourfast which makes the furniture perfect for a hotel with a reputation for providing first class comfort.

At the ZOW trade fair which will take
place from February 18 - 21, 2013,
3H-Lacke will again present its competence in surfaces. Whether wood
working materials, metal or glass,
whether water based systems or
solvent based lacquers, whether
high gloss finishes or ultra-matt –
3H has the right solution for every
application and every desired property and will welcome its customers in Bad Salzuflen as partner,
consultant and service provider.
Example high gloss: Whether classic
sprayed lacquer using 2-component
DD lacquers, 2-component PUR high
solid lacquers, 2-component hydro
high gloss lacquers or the economical
UV high gloss roller lacquer – 3H has
developed the right lacquer and also
provides know-how for the application
techniques involved.
Along with application to ‘normal’ carriers such as wood working materials,
visitors at the ZOW trade fair will also
find information on lacquering glass,
plastic and metal surfaces. In addition,
with Full Color Printing (see pages 4+5)
3H-Lacke will present a new field that
sets new standards for the application
of effect surfaces and vivid shades of
colour.
3H-Lacke will also present surfaces
that look and feel natural. Due to continuing interest, rough-sawn, brushed
and coarsely textured solid wood as
