Volunteerism is alive and well at PCYC! This month we have seen our volunteers busy with summer
activities. Captain Dave held his 2nd fishing derby and halibut was the featured fish of the day. After
the fishing event, the club was offered halibut fish tacos. Gina Haase caught the BIG ONE! The
fishing events are a great new addition to the PCYC ON THE WATER program. Please read Capt.
Dave’s more detailed article describing the upcoming fishing events. Marge Curley, our activities
director, is continuing to organize the kayak and paddleboard outings. Next month the paddlers are
going to tie up at my house and enjoy, “Coffee with the Commodore.” This would be a great month
to come and join in the fun.
Did you see the quilt that Rosemary Tobin made that was on display in the lobby? She handcrafted this quilt for the ON
THE WATER committee to use in a silent auction. Talk about a volunteer devoting hours of work to the club! I hope you
all had a chance to see the quilt and hopefully put a bid in the box.
If you attended the Marina Fest you surely noticed the membership committee volunteers hard at work recruiting new
members. Additional volunteers were holding a two-day Open House at PCYC.
Talk about volunteering! SC/Sam Peck just showed up the other day and surprised us all by reorganizing our membership
badges. That task took an entire day. The staff was very thankful because it is such a long and tedious task. Kudos to Sam!
We all know that SC/ Martha Jean Geisler knows how to volunteer! You might not know that she represents PCYC at
many of our Yachting Club Associations. Membership in these organizations is vital to a healthy boating program in
California. Martha Jean is Senior Staff Commodore of the Association of Santa Barbara Channel Yacht Clubs. She serves
on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Yachting Association. One of her jobs for SCYA is to organize the
calendar and publications for the Opening Days in Southern California. She is the Rear Commodore for the Yacht Racing
Union and there she organizes the training seminars for the 35 YRU and the 94 SCYA member clubs. In her spare time
she is the President of our own Pacific Corinthian Youth Foundation. Thank you, Martha Jean, for all you do for PCYC
and the youth of our community.
Thanks go to all the volunteers at PCYC. Please keep volunteering and attending our events. Show all those who work so
hard that you appreciate their efforts.
It is with much sadness that we had to face the loss last month of our wonderful Esmeralda. She was truly loved by so
many. We were all drawn to Esmeralda’s beauty, charm, and warmth. We are deeply sorry for her family’s loss. Thank you
for the contributions given to the family by both the staff and members of PCYC.

Last month’s participation in the Channel Islands Harbor MARINA FEST as a sponsor and exhibitor, as well as the Club’s
corresponding Open Houses on the same dates, was coordinated by Membership chair Candace Reynolds and
brilliantly executed by respective event chairs Steve Smith and Julia McQuillan. I’ll give you a brief overview of what’s
going on below.
Membership Committee updates – under our Open House chair Julia McQuillan, we have an Open House scheduled
for Sunday, July 14th and Sunday, July 28th. Since new members are the lifeblood of any organization and the Pacific
Corinthian Yacht Club is no different from any other, please tell your friends and neighbors about the incredible
membership benefits and opportunities at our Club.
On the House Committee side, we are forever grateful to John and Linda Dullam and their entire team for stepping up to
the plate to undertake the job of pruning and trimming the trees and shrubs on the north side of the approach to the Club.
In addition, they completely replanted Rafael’s herb garden. Thank you both for your continued efforts in the
beautification of our Club and for your generosity in these endeavors. We continue the process of identifying and
prioritizing needed projects around the Club and will keep you all abreast as they become conceptualized and completed.

In General
Summer is officially here and the PCYC Pool and Spa are open and heated. We keep the pool at a
very comfortable temperature for your swimming pleasure.
Now that summer is in full swing and the kids are out of school, I’d like to re-post and re-visit some
of the summer safety rules of the pool. Swimming is the most popular summer activity, let’s all
strive to make this a safe summer pool season. As a note of precaution, located behind the spa is a
life preserver with a rope as well a shepherds crook.
Please actively supervise your kids around the pool and spa as PCYC does not employ lifeguards, seconds count in
preventing accidents.
Above all else enjoy the beautiful harbor views, the wonderful pool and spa amenities and remember you may order food
poolside. Have a great fun and safe summer!
Pool Rules
Pool hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Pool occupancy is 20 and Spa occupancy is 6
All pool guests must register at the front desk, at all times, and be accompanied by a member
All minors under the age of 14 must be accompanied at all times by a parent or supervising adult
The last ten minutes of every hour is adult swim only
All diapered children must wear water proof swim diapers
Swim attire, unless with a cover-up, is NOT ALLOWED in the clubhouse
Only paper or plastic glasses and dishes are to be used in the pool area
Bare feet are NOT ALLOWED in the clubhouse at anytime
Swim fins, water shoes, weights, or any other objects that could mark the pool or become caught in its drain
system are NOT ALLOWED. Floaties may be used but only where they do not unduly restrict the use of the pool
by others.
 Running on the pool deck, pushing or dunking others in the pool, popping of towels, splashing or squirting water
on people not participating in a pool game and similar dangerous activities are NOT ALLOWED.
 No diving in the shallow area of the pool
 Use of the pool is at all times subject to Clubhouse Rule 2 regarding general conduct. “All members of PCYC,
their spouses, their children and guests shall conduct themselves at all times with due regard and consideration for
the rights, comfort, convenience and enjoyment of the club by others.”











The McNish Classic Yacht Race attracts notable nauticals

Now in its 36th year, the MCYR is still sailed on the waters just outside the Channel Islands Harbor. It began life as the
Corinthian Classic Yacht Race in 1977. Through the years it has attracted hundreds. A stunning mix of classic yachts
sailed by veteran and novice sailors. Remaining true to the tenets of traditional sailing, all the MCYR sailboats were
designed before 1952 and have ranged in size from a diminutive 17 feet to over 100-feet.
For more than 20 years the entire race, start-to-finish, was handled by founding PCYC members Juanita and Dick McNish
and a core of trusty volunteers who quietly did a tidy job of providing an annual sailing opportunity for classic yacht
owners and sailors to “shake out the sails” of grand wooden yachts in spirited competition.
In an era where the hype often times exceeds the deeds, it is most refreshing to discover those who merit genuine
recognition. Summing up the race daughter and licensed Captain Leslie McNish recalled the race’s origin, "The whole
idea started because papa had an old wooden boat and nowhere to race it." Today, the highly respected McNish Classic is
considered one of four premiere classic yacht races held along the western seaboard.
Realizing that many older boats did not have a PHRF rating, Dick created a modified version of his own that not only
received wide acceptance, but has served as the basis for other sailing classics. McNish personally sponsored the
development of a special computer program that charts sea and wind conditions for each race -- in addition to analyzing
the sailing performance of each boat in each class. The race was planned in such a way so that skippers with only basic
sailing and seamanship knowledge can be competitive.
Racing by the inverted start, the slowest boat starting first, the course is laid out with the traditional yacht in mind; a
threemile weather leg is designated with the major portion of the race sailed off the wind: reaching and running. The
course favors the full-keel, heavy boats and the ingenious handicapping system permits small vessels to compete with
yachts two and even three times their size.
Most boats finish within minutes of each other which generates great excitement for spectators ashore and those who
come out to the breakwater wall to welcome the racing fleet back home.
Navigating a 17mile course in the Santa Barbara Channel between Channel Islands Harbor and Ventura, the billowing
sails of Sloops, Cutters, Ketches, Yawls and Schooners join together for a friendly day of sailing competing for awards in
elapsed time, bristol (first-class condition) appearance, oldest boat, smallest boat, farthest port, and lasttofinish (usually
accepted by a skipper with a hilarious explanation for the distinction).
Several of the skippers plan their vacations around this, the last in a series of four major wooden boat races on the west
coast, spending time afterwards visiting the nearby Channel Islands National Park. More of a grand gathering of wooden
dowagers of the sea than a bloodthirsty race, the event is a cheerful excuse to socialize. As evidence of the congenial
atmosphere, only two protests have been filed in the history of the race.

Committee Boat,Jr. Executive. Local shipwrights have made all the McNish Classic perpetual trophies.
Some years there were more than 40 entries and others as few as 25 that would be treated to gusty bracing winds or would
labor through near dead calm conditions. No worries though, Jim Koutras and John Gish of Solana Beach will tell you
they win every race, as they often and proudly accept the Last-to-Finish Trophy sailing 40-foot Erica – best time: 5 hours,
30 seconds.

As the MCYR approaches this year, July 27th, 2013, consider a few more fun facts:
The Oldest Boat entered was Gerry Burch’s, century-old schooner Los Amigos, built in 1895 and raced up until the
time it sank out side Ventura Harbor.
Most Distant Port honors goes to the 1895 ketch Oscar Tybring from Norway.
Walter Russakoff built Vignette II and his is the only boat to have entered all races. And has won First to Finish three
Times.
Ben Harper’s Freedom was the first yacht to win the Strathmore Cup in 1977.
Aviatrix Jeana Yeager, whose “Voyager” aircraft now hangs in the Smithsonian, sailed the race one year.
1988 was the largest race with 40 classic yachts competing for the Strathmore Cup.
The smallest entry was Mud Pie, a 17-foot schooner. The largest was the America a replica of the 139 foot yacht
America that won the historic Royal Yacht Squadron’s “100 Guinea Cup”race around the Isle of Wight in 1851.
Dick McNish, Somis, CA, has sailed every race, only with different boats, Cheerio II and Valiant, but has yet to win
back the Strathmore Cup that he donated. The silver screen swashbuckling heartbreaker Errol Flynn once owned
Cheerio II.
For Alsumar owners Ted and Vicki Davis the race is a family reunion each year and have so many friends and
relatives on board that the “rail meat” forms an unbroken line from bow to stern of the 70-foot yawl.
One year, the celebrated cruising couple, Lynn and Larry Pardee adjusted their course just so that they could enter
the race.
Kathy Roche, owner of the famed 65-foot cutter Orient built in 1937, conducted a “derelict-to-darling” restoration in
Channel Islands Harbor and entered the 2001 MCYR -- the first
time the yacht had competed in 30 years.
East Coast built Baruna, a 72-foot yawl, was long-time racing
partner of Orient. The boats were reunited after three decades at
the 24th MCYR. Baruna and Orient’s former owners formed the
Barient Winch Company, the prototypes of which are still aboard
each boat.
Locally-built Maggie “J”, a 28-foot ketch was sailed by the Richey
family of Oakview. Captain/Daddy/Trumpter Ted is assisted by
mates/children Shaunna, 19, Brad, 14, and Martine, 11, who
began her sailing career in a bassinette on the cabin sole in 1992.
• The two Schooners, Dauntless and the Rose of Sharon did the
Bermuda Race in 1931 and raced, for the first time on the West
Coast, 15 years ago in MCYR.
Yacht racing is a McNish family passion.
Captain Leslie McNish, married to Captain John "Sugar" Flanagan
charter a 65foot gaffrigged topsail schooner, Alcyone. Grandchildren
Alyce has been on the University of Washington sailing team for four
years. The team competed in the University Nationals. Darby’s Port
Townsend High School team, coached by her dad, competed nationally
in the High School Nationals.
Son Jeffery raced his 45foot Sparkman & Stephens sloop, Valiant in San
Francisco for 21 years. It was recently sold because being Mr. Mom, to
Ramona, Nora and Peter, is a full time job. He still finds time for his
music career. His wife Bridget is an ICU nurse at Children’s Hospital
Oakland.

WEATHER
It has been an amazing spring with light winds and calm seas. With any luck it will remain
the same thru the summer and fall boating season.
FISHING
Fishing has been very good with high counts of Halibut, White Sea Bass and Yellowtail.We
did have our second PCYC "On the Water” fishing derby and caught some nice fish.(see
attached photos.)
We are proposing to give a nice Patagonia vest with PCYC Derby logo for an entry gift for the next derby. If you
fished the second derby, the entry fee will be $35.00 and includes the vest. If you did not fish the last derby, the
entry will be $35.00 and $60.00 if you want a vest included. I will be sending the Patagonia product numbers so
you can view the vest online and then send me your size, boat name and anglers’ names. Watch for Derby News
e-mails for updates.
I think as the local waters warm we will see more pelagic fish caught. During the 1984-1985 El Nino we had
species that usually remain below San Diego running in our channel.
Our next derby will be July 20-21. We are going to wait to announce the species until a week before the event due
to the run of warm water fish arriving.
We were at the boat show this past weekend, displaying our sellers’ yachts and Judy and I were talking to Mary
Foster. Mary mentioned there is a ladies’ fishing team challenge trophy in the clubhouse. This has Judy's interest
and she wants to form a PCYC ladies’ club challenge team and bring the trophy to PCYC. Judy is presently
looking into details and will send out a notice to our PCYC derby anglers.
YACHTS
Good news from the market. We had 3200 people attend the boat show and I would say it showed more positive
signs than in the past 5 boat shows combined. We have a lot of new residents who have purchased waterfront
homes and want to enjoy boating. We also had quite a few questions from possible future new PCYC members
asking us how we enjoyed PCYC. My feelings are we will be out of the depressed yacht market in the near future.

Hello!
I'd like to make 2 friendly suggestions for the Perilus that might be beneficial. Please consider the following:
(1) In a college journalism class about 70 years ago, I was taught that EVERY PICTURE MUST have a CAPTION
under it. The reader wants to know " who or what" they are looking at. I would like to see all pics in the Periplus with
a caption under them! (I know it will take an extra effort, but it will be worth it to the reader).
(2) I think it would be a very good idea to start a "LETTER-TO-THE-EDITOR" section in the Periplus. It could add a
wide variety of very interesting experiences and thoughts and even increase readership.

Thursday, June 13th was our “ Someone’s in the Kitchen” luncheon with
Kathy Moreno, from The Kitchen Restaurant in Oxnard. Kathy
demonstrated quick and easy appetizers made with goat cheese and pesto
sauces, which would be great for entertaining at home or at sea.
Our dessert was an ice cream infused with pesto served over a puffed pastry
filled with pesto. It was fabulous. We sold old cookbooks donated by members, PCYC Log Cookbook compiled by
members of your club and we had baskets and more baskets of treasures to give away. A Fun Time was had by all.
Our next LWDL will be held in two months. Our theme for this luncheon is “Roses”. We are honored to have as our
guest speaker Rosalind Thebaud. Roz holds post graduate degrees in Botany and Plant Physiology. Roz is a board
member of the Ventura Rose Society and a member of the American Rose Society.
So bring your questions and join us on Thursday the 8th of August.

Commodore’s Ball 2013
A great deal of thanks to all who attended to celebrate with Commodore Karen Lorenzen,
her family and many, many friends. The banners were up, the bandstand was ready and the
champagne, wine and other liquid assets flowed throughout the evening as a grand time was
had by all!
None of this just happens on its own…first thanks to our “Motley Crew” of Staff Commodores
Sam Peck and Graham Wilson for the electronics, lighting and many special effects!!! Thanks to
our ladies Doris Melillo, Karen Mahr, June Wilson, JoAnn Glogow, Judi Roussey, Angela Switzky and Susan Peck for
decorating throughout the room. Thanks to S/C Sam Peck for the photography, too, while we danced away to the tunes of
Warren Takahashi and Pier 101 Band!
Of course, as they always are, our Staff was extraordinary. Our GM Brenda Dickmann, Danny & Rudy were invaluable
help in the planning and execution of the entire event! Chef Raphael and his team in the kitchen, Otilio and his team in the
dining room, along with Courtney and her team in Bill’s Bar, just outdid themselves over and over again with superb
presentations!

Help Wanted
Your PCYC volunteer managers of the Gear Locker, Vikki Diaz
and Audrey Keller have run the Gear Locker for the third
season. It’s time to pass the responsibility on to other member
volunteers.
Be assured, we will train and support you. We do our buying
for the Gear Locker mostly online. The eligible Gear Locker
team member(s) must have computer skills to shop for gear,
to interact with our local vendors and to manage the
inventory records with accounting. Gear Locker does have
profitability responsibilities to our members and to the Board.
The Gear Locker team managers work within the guidelines of
the SOP and operate the Gear Locker as you would a small
business. Gear Locker should be run by at a minimum of 2
members and could be managed by 2 couples.
If you are considering volunteering but have time restraints,
we are always looking for help while we run our Gear Locker
sale events.
