MISSION STATEMENT
The Antioch Historical Society Museum Sports Legends Program and Display is dedicated to preserving the historical achievements of both genders and
all sports in our community for present and future
generations. The display reflects the “Best of the
Best”. The program is based on inclusion rather than
exclusion. Recognition includes athletes, coaches,
and leaders from youth and community programs,
high school through college, and on to the pros. The
Antioch Historical Society Museum will continue to
be a center for outreach, education, & recognition.

“AN HISTORICAL SPORTS LEGENDS LEGACY”

Following a full year of research by a committee of twelve
individuals, all of whom worked very long hours creating
guidelines, doing research and attending meetings, we produced a ballot of forty-three deserving individuals. The
electorate, comprised of past inductees and those volunteers who were qualified by their attendance at meetings
or hours of service within the program in March, successfully
elected fourteen individuals and one team for induction into
the Antioch Sports Legends Hall of Fame, class of 2013.
We send our heartfelt congratulations to each of these
athletes, coach and community leader. They are as follows:

We are in our eighth year of operation as of this October,
and at that time we will have conducted our seventh annual
induction totaling ninety-nine athletes, coaches, and community leaders and seven championship teams, for a grand

Since 2006 the success of this program has been cultivated by volunteer efforts and donations from individuals, businesses, and corporate neighbors in Antioch and
the surrounding area. Over the past few years the
Sports Legends Program has attracted thousands of
visitors to one of the finest museums in the State of
California and our internet web page:
www.antiochsportslegends.com has helped put our
local museum on the universal radar. It has become one
of the most dominant programs in the history of the Antioch Museum. We are proud that our contributions have
significantly impacted the overall financial well being of
the museum, which in turn helps to preserve history and
connects generations both in the past and for years to
come. The entire museum recently has undergone significant upgrades both inside and outside, which our program has assisted in financing. If you have not seen the
building at night, be sure and drive by after dusk up
until 10 p.m. and see it lit up as Antioch’s “Little White
House!” Photos page 1 and 4.
On May 19th, from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. the Alumni
Group held a baseball clinic for young boys and girls
followed by a BBQ here on the museum grounds. 114
youths participated under the direction of our founder,
Dave Sanderson, who has been working diligently this
past year and contributed significantly to the community
with several outreach programs in 2012. See the photos
on page 4.
On August 17th, here on Antioch Babe Ruth Fields, Debbie Nelson, our 2009 inductee, hosted an alumni sponsored softball clinic for young girls from 10 a.m.-2:30
p.m. followed by a BBQ of hotdogs at the gazebo and
a museum tour. Twenty-two girls ages 8-18 participated and learned the softball fundamentals of hitting,
pitching, base running, sliding, infield and outfield play
from Debbie and her instructors. Helping with the day’s
events were Eddie Beaudin, Bill Fraga, Steve Parks, Vic
Thornhill, and Rally Rounsaville. A Great Day For All !!

ASL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION:
The Antioch Legends Alumni are comprised of the body of athletes who have been inducted as individuals or team members
into the Antioch Sports Legends Hall of Fame. With seven years of inductions that have created nearly 300 representatives of
Antioch sports history, a sub-committee has formed from this body and has written a mission statement:
“The mission of the sub-committee is to develop social opportunities, to renew old friendships among members of the Antioch
sports community, conduct activities that provide financial support for the Sports Legends Hall of Fame Program
and promote athletic opportunities and achievement among current youth.“
To this end, the committee has created social events including an annual induction golf tournament and a reunion party. In
addition several alumni have contributed by sponsoring a baseball coaches clinic, girls softball clinic, and a youth baseball
clinic. In the short time of the committee’s existence, the present sub-committee consists of Gene “Butch” Rounsaville, Rally
Rounsaville, Steve Parks, Vic Thornhill and founder representative Dave Sanderson. Active committee members include Dan
Tuck, John Whitman, Art Acosta, Larry Hopwood, and Debbie Nelson. The Alumni Association encourages all alumni to get
involved and any supporters are welcome to assist in achieving our goals.

On Sunday, May
19th the alumni
committee held
its 1st annual
baseball clinic at
the Babe Ruth

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

INVADING PANTHER 11 DEFEATS PITTSBURG PIRATES BY 38-7

Once-mighty Pittsburg High School tasted and swallowed the bitter pill of defeat at the hands of a smoothrunning Antioch Panther eleven for the first time in 16 years, 38-7, Friday night before the largest local
football gathering in history.
Playing to a record shattering attendance for 5,500 gridiron followers, the Antioch prepsters carved out
one of the most decisive victories ever made since the respective schools opened athletic relations.
The Panther-scoring parade, netting six touchdowns, was led by an array of talented backfield aces including
Worth Shaw, Bob Vossler, and Larry Ginocchio, who worked behind an effective forward wall that paved the
way with deadly precision blocking. Not until the waning minutes of the final quarter were the defending
county champions able to crack the stout Antioch defense for their lone tally in the one-sided affair.
PIRATE OFFENSIVE HALTED
The invading Panthers with stalwart linemen Nick Rodriguez, Frank Anderson, Jesse Cone, and Pat Ryan showing the way, stopped the Pittsburg offensive cold, then proceeded in business-like fashion to spring Shaw and
company loose for large chunks of yardage.
Three lightning like thrusts in the second period provided the telling blows and left little doubt as to the
eventual outcome. By half-time, the Blue and Gold aggregation had piled up a 25-0 lead.
(Editors Note: Antioch High School colors were blue and gold at this time in history.)
A partially blocked punt from the toe of Tony Lopez by end Rodriguez, with the recovery being made by center Anderson, touched off the fireworks from the Pittsburg 11 yard stripe. Shaw registered his first of three
touchdowns after two spinner plays through the center of the line. Ken Sani’s try for point from placement was
wide. The lethal passing combination of Shaw to Rodriguez went to work in the second quarter and stunned
the jam-packed audience with three touchdowns in quick order.
SHAW’S PASS CLICKS
After Bob Dossey was thrown for a five yard loss by Arnold Linscheid and Vince DiMaggio, Shaw wound up
and uncorked a long pass from midfield. Tony Lopez deflected the oval directly into the waiting arms of
Rodriguez, who was brought down immediately on the Pirate 20.
An offside penalty cost the Panthers five yards, but Shaw crashed through for 12 with two line tries, then
Vossler circled his own right end for a first down on the 9. Shaw required only three jolts through the middle to
reach pay dirt again. Sani place kicked the extra point. Score: Antioch 13 Pittsburg 0.
Ever present Anderson garnered in a Pirate fumble after the ensuing kickoff and Antioch was off to the races
again, this time from the Pittsburg 38. Payoff came on the 22 yard aerial from Shaw to Rodriguez who stood
practically isolated in a corner of the end zone. Sani’s placekick for the extra point hit the goal post and
bounced back. Score: Antioch 19 Pittsburg 0.
With less than a minute remaining in the first half, Shaw, after three unsuccessful attempts, cut loose and found
favorite catcher Rodriguez open and the score was upped six points. The pass, good for 24 yards was set up
after Bob Vossler returned a punt back 27 yards. Sani’s kick was low and wide. Score: Antioch 25 Pittsburg 0.
PANTHERS COME BACK STRONG
A spirited talk between halves by Coach Paul C. Heilmann had little effect as the Panthers made merry in the
third canto with two added scores.

Shaw opened a drive from 49 yards out by running out 16 yards then made it another first down on the Pittsburg 23, three plays later. Vossler took his turn on his favorite reverse around end and raced 18 more before
he was hauled down. Al Affinito, who played bang-up ball for the losing cause, nailed Shaw for a one yard
loss on the next play. Back came Vossler with four and Shaw went the final two for his third and final touchdown. A bad pass from center spoiled the try for conversion. Score: Antioch 31 Pittsburg 0.
Striving desperately to tally, the Pirates opened up with a passing attack. Two short heaves by Martinovich to
Buddy and Neno Aiello in that order gave Pittsburg a first down on their own 39, but Antioch countered with
Anderson who intercepted the next pass thrown by Lopez and returned to the Orange and Black 24 before
being stopped. Antioch mentor, Jack Danilovich, gave his second unit backfield an opportunity to display its
wares at this stage of the game and the jubilant reserves responded with the sixth touchdown.
SPINNER CAUSES HAVOC
Joe Harlan cracked guard for seven yards from the Pittsburg 24, followed by Dan Enea, who light-footed it
down to the 11 on a reverse. Harlan used the effective spinner twice and racked up another score. A well
aimed place kick by Harlan widened the lead to Antioch 38 Pittsburg 0.
Standing on his own goal line, Harlan pulled a “Joe Kelley” by kicking practically straight up from punt formation with Pittsburg taking the ball on the Antioch 17.
A pass, Martinovich to end Jim Johnson, who lateralled to Tony Lopez clicked for a Pirate Touchdown. Buddy
Aiello drop kicked the extra point, but the damage was done, the wide-eyed paper city rooters regarded the
seven points as a token of good will.
By virtue of the triumph, Coach Danilovich’s gridders today stand head and shoulders over all county rivals and
should breeze on to title honors with little trouble.
Outstanding in defeat were Tony Lopez, Vince DiMaggio, Jim Johnson, Captain Larry Patton, Jimno and Al Affinito, who withstood terrific punishment at his tackle spot.

and at the same time support a community asset and nonprofit program. We thank you for your interest and support,
and we are grateful for the many volunteers which we have
on board. There are so many dedicated individuals along
with our five founders within our museum that it would be
difficult to name them all here, but you will find many of
their names on the donor board on the top level floor of the
museum across from the office. We are always looking for
more help, so if you have time on your hands and would like
to help with our many committees, including display, docents,
school and private tours, research, office assistance, and
web page design, please call upon us and offer your services. We promise to welcome you with open arms as we
continue to fulfill our mission set down by the founders in
2006:
