AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2015
“There's nothing
half so pleasant as
coming home again.”
– Margaret Elizabeth Sangster
from the BOARD & MANAGEMENT
Dear Members,
Ralph Winer
bog president
Kraig Spina
general
manager
We hope you are having a wonderful summer. The Board, Committees
and Staff are working diligently during the remaining summer months to
finalize plans for the upcoming season. We look forward to offering many
new and innovative activities and dining options as well as exciting golf,
tennis and fitness offerings.
The 2015-2016 fiscal year budget process is now under way and will
be presented to the Budget and Finance Committee in October, with
recommendations from the committee being forwarded to the Board of
Governors for approval.
We continue to report great news on the membership sales and real
estate front. From November 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015, we have closed
or have under contract to close 87 units, which is putting us on track to
exceed prior years’ sales from as far back as 2002. The great majority of our
new members are joining with golf, tennis, or both sports memberships. The
inventory of condos and homes for sale has dropped from 120 in 2011, to 70
in 2013, to our current level of 41 condos and 1 home in 2015.
The Phase II Clubhouse renovation project, which will encompass
improvements to the Grille Room, Glen Bar, Pool and Fitness Center,
is progressing as planned. We are currently making our way through the
business planning phase, which involves gathering member feedback related
to concept testing and working with the architect and land planner to
identify the physical plant requirements of the project. There will be several
more roundtables in the next few months and into the season in order to
discuss the project with our members and gather their feedback, as well as
a comprehensive exploratory survey, which will gather detailed information
regarding the facility and operational improvements necessary to enhance
your Gleneagles experience and to keep the club attractive for future home
buyers. The Board of Governors has not yet determined a budget, scope
and timeline for this project. We assure you that we will communicate this
information to the membership as soon as it is established.
Although there will not be an annual club closure in 2015, multiple
projects are taking place to maintain the infrastructure and facilities within
your club. Some of the projects that we will be completing in August and
September include:
•
•
•
•
Nick Jolly

Refurbishment of the Grille Room, which should be complete
around August 17.
Installation of brick pavers along the golf greenside complex and
staging area.
Pressure cleaning of the Clubhouse roof to be complete around
September 18.
Refurbishment of the Linton Blvd. Gate and Guardhouse to be
complete by September 18.
The 2015 Membership Survey results have been tabulated and the overall
results are extremely positive. Thank you to the nearly 800 members who
completed the survey. The comments especially are very helpful as we plan for
the upcoming season. A summary of the results will be distributed soon.
We send our best wishes for an enjoyable summer and we look forward to
seeing you around the Club!
Respectfully yours,
Ralph Winer, President

Using the Members Only Bulletin Board
The club provides an interactive website with
many wonderful features for members only. One
feature is a message board, which is only accessible
via the Members Only part of the website. This is

the perfect place to post your own personal ‘want’
ad. Whether you are looking for a partner for a
Monday - Friday
Mah Jongg game, looking to borrow a crib from a
9:00 am - 5:00 pm
neighbor when your grandchild comes to visit, or
hoping to meet other members from your hometown, this is a wonderful
place to post a message for other members to see. This message board
is intended to be a resource for the members, therefore the promotion
of businesses and personal services are not permitted. If you have any
questions about accessing the Members Only website, contact me at 561637-1201 or klaraia@gleneagles.cc.

Summer Greetings from the Golf Staff! We hope that everyone is
enjoying the great weather and playing a lot of golf. The reciprocal
program has been received very well and will continue through
the month of October, so I encourage all of our members to take
advantage of this program. The summer leagues have been going
great, and Gleneagles is always well represented with a lot of victories!
We are looking forward to completing a beautification project
to the golf cart staging area with the installment of pavers taking
place in the month of August. We are also developing a new golf
orientation video which will be part of the 2015-2016 season kickoff
for all golf members. Proper golf course etiquette is an important
component of our members’ overall golf experience, and it is our
goal with this video to refresh everyone’s knowledge of the golf
operation in order to have a very smooth season out on the golf
courses.

pro golf tip
As you are preparing for the upcoming golf season, I encourage
you to check out your golf shoes and make sure they are in good
shape. Of course, cushioning and support are very important to
your comfort. With frequent use, shoes will eventually lose their
cushioning and support, so if you’re starting to feel not as supported
or comfortable, it might be time to get a new pair. You will also want
to make sure your soft spikes are not worn down so that you do not
lose traction.
If you have any questions, please stop by the Golf Shop and let us
know. We are happy to help you find a shoe that might be better for
you. Remember that we can always special order hard-to-find sizes,
and we offer tremendous value and excellent customer service for
all of your golf equipment and apparel needs. – Joe

MIKE PUC, uspta director of tennis & fitness
THE SPLIT STEP
Why are some players so
prepared and seem to reach
balls with ease? The answer may
be preparation and specifically,
the split step. You see the
split step in virtually every
sport, allowing the athlete to
be properly positioned at the
correct time.
In tennis, the split step occurs
on each and every hit of the ball
while it is on the opponent’s
side of the net. As you track
the ball from a ready position,
watch when your opponent is
impacting the ball then spring
onto your toes, only as high as
to fit a tennis ball under your
heels, landing in a balanced
athletic position ready to move
in the direction of the ball. The
key to the timing is to be at the
height of your split when the
ball is stuck. You will definitely
reach more balls in a controlled
manner with a split step. – Mike
The Calendar of Events that drives the activity at Tennis is now
finalized and has been posted to our website at www.gleneagles.cc.
We have added many unique events to pique your interest including
PAP Tennis Jai Alai, One-on-One Doubles Tournaments, Singles Tie
Breaker Tournament, Buds, Brews & Brats, Girls Night Out, and we
will be hosting the ATP Survivor Series Professional Tournament,
a qualifying event for the ATP Yellow Tennis Ball tournament in
Delray Beach. We have retained popular events such as the Member
Guests, Color War, Dancing Under the Stars, Complimentary
Clinics, Sunset Mixers and Breakfast at Wimbledon. Additionally, we
have launched a revamped group lesson program featuring Tennis
101, Men’s and Women’s Clinics, Stroke of the Week, Feeding
Frenzy, and Ball Machine Workout Clinics. Short descriptions of
these events are also posted online and detailed explanations will
appear in the new Tennis Handbook available in November. There
are many changes in this book including the addition of many New
Resident Tennis members and a full complement of 80 Annual
Members. We’re ready….are you?
Team Tennis is also an important element
of programming that drives participation at
tennis while assuring competitive and social
games. Gleneagles will be entering 18 teams in
5 different leagues beginning in the fall and
carrying on into the winter and spring and we
want to be certain you are involved if you would
like to be. Please contact me at Mpuc@gleneagles.cc
if you are new to leagues and would like to
participate.
We have been very busy with maintenance
this summer, relining 9 courts and resurfacing
all 21 courts providing a smooth cushion surface
that your legs, knees and back will enjoy while
maintaining the ambiance Gleneagles is known
for. All canopies have been cleaned, walkways
and Stadium court viewing stands repainted, and
new shrubbery planted along the walkways and
throughout the complex.

Bolle fires up fall & winter tennis with an amazing collection called
“Heat Wave.” Sleeveless, cap or long sleeved tops in vibrant red, black and
white colors with matching skirts puts you into the “hottest” player group.
Tail counters with “Playful Blues,” with trendy space-dyed tops, and
contrasting skirts. The space-dyed fabric hides certain less-than-perfect
body shapes.
Our newest K-Swiss Big Shot Light tennis shoe proved to be the fastest

STRENGTH
Tuesday Friday Straddle the deck: Avoid starting the treadmill while standing on
the belt. The motion could catch you by surprise and knock you
off balance. Allow the belt to start moving before getting on,
•
Walk with an incline: You should always set your treadmill incline
to one or two. That’s comparable to walking on a flat sidewalk.
If it’s set at zero, it’ll be easier than walking outside, because the
treadmill’s belt moves beneath you, so you don’t need to push off
and propel yourself forward.
•
Let go of the treadmill rails: Unless you have a physical
impairment that requires you to hold on, you should pump your
arms just as you would when walking outside. Holding onto the
rail will misalign your walking posture, it can also strain your
shoulders and reduce the number of calories you burn.
•
Keep your head up: Your feet tend to follow your eyes, so keep
your head up and look at the console, not at your feet or off to
the side. Also, try to stay in the center of the belt rather than all
the way toward the back or front. If you stay too close to the front,
your foot can catch on the motor cover. If you walk too close to
the back, you may slide off.
•
Don’t allow distractions: This is a big one! The treadmill requires
a focus. Reading a magazine, texting or even talking to someone
beside you or behind you could cause you to lose your balance.
•
Come to a complete stop: Always come to a complete stop before
coming off the treadmill, not only for your safety but for the next
person who wants to use the treadmill.

At The Bridge Table by art goldman
All games have rules and Bridge is no exception. Whether you are
a casual rubber bridge player or a serious duplicate bridge player, it is
♦ ♣
important to understand how to deal with a few of the violations which
occur most frequently. Space does not permit us to go into details on
even those few, so we will list them and comment where we can.
Bids out of turn…depends on whether it was an opening bid, whose
turn it was to bid and other considerations. Leads out of turn…if an opening lead, declarer
has five options including making himself the dummy. Revokes…a two trick penalty if
the revoker took the trick where the revoke occured; otherwise, one trick. At duplicate
a Director may award an adjusted score if the penalty does not restore equity to the nonoffending pair. Insufficient bids…the next player can accept the bid and there would be no
penalty. Otherwise the bid must be made sufficient; if done so in the same strain thre is no
penalty, if any other call the offender’s partner is barred from the auction. There may be
further ramifications if either bid is conventional.
If you have one of these problems and want more detailed information, go to the
American Contract Bridge League website, acbl.org, and use the search engine.
Duplicate players, when playing at a club, have the advantage of a Director trained in the
laws. Whenever an irregularity occurs the Director MUST be called. All Directors have the
same last name, “PLEASE.” The proper call is “Director, please.”
After playing for more years than I care to admit, a few months ago, for the first time, I
found a reason to accept an insufficient bid. My partner dealt and bid a weak Two Hearts.
The next player bid Two Diamonds, quite insufficient. She was about to correct to Three
Diamonds when I called, “Director, please.” The Director explained that I had the right to
accept her bid, and holding ♠63, ♥A952, ♦742, ♣KJ63, I bid Two Hearts!
I was able to indicate my mild support for partner’s opening weak two-bid without raising
the level of our commitment. Now if the opponents bid on, my partner should be able to
make a more knowledgable decision on whether or not to compete.
Our Open and Ladies duplicate games as well as our Sunday evening social bridge
continue through the summer and I hope to see you at the table.
