“Made in Italy” footwear, seen through
its evolution portrayed by various
styles expressing the vogue of the
period, takes on a significance that
goes beyond mere lifestyle.
It is a cultural phenomenon in which
passion and the work of all the “actors”
committed to the designing,
manufacturing, processing of material
and marketing is enclosed.
Italian style is not something that turns
up overnight… suddenly or recently.
It is a lifestyle, a way of combining
function and beauty, practicality and
whim, innovation and tradition.
This “culture” is demonstrated in every
field of its genius. All one has to do is
think of the Renaissance, which
was not only an era of great artists and
thinkers but a universal cultural
phenomenon as well. It was during this
time that the idea of beauty ceased being
an intellectual goal for the
chosen few to develop into a
phenomenon absorbed and shared by all.
It was also a time in which
immaginativeness in dressing oneself
could no longer prescind from what one
put on his feet.
Italian shoes are not just something to
put on your feet, but a small story made
up of acumen and creative manual
quality, a way to convey pleasurable
sensations. “Life’s Pleasures to be Worn”
as a definition, could not possibly be
more appropriate.
I use this occasion to thank our friends
at ICE – Italian Trade Commission,
who have always joined us in our
passion of promoting all that is an
expression of our manual quality, the
creative Italian mastermind of that
world renowned and acknowledged
Made in Italy.
e are pleased to present the
exhibit “Shoes for the stars Italian footwear in the
International cinema” as part of the Italian
promotion “Italy at South Coast Plaza”.
The exhibit is a magnificent example of
the creative mind of Italian footwear
costume designers. It is an expression of
Italian craftsmanship, tradition, creativity
and sophistication.
The multifaceted campaign, “Italy at South
Coast Plaza” aims at creating a true
Italian experience and presenting the
ultimate Italian lifestyle, whose
complexity and richness will be
demonstrated and experienced through
the enchanting world of fashion and
accessories, through the opulence of foods
and wines, through the magic of iconic
films and the vision of photographical
expressions and through the music of
internationally renowned operas.
The event is organized, under the auspices
of the Ministry for International Trade,
by the Italian Trade Commission-ICE,
which is the Italian Government Agency
entrusted with the development, facilitation and promotion of trade between
Italy and other countries in the world.
“Italy at South Coast Plaza” is a
celebration of “Made in Italy” products
that constantly boast new standards in
design and push innovation one step
further. The numerous Italian designer
boutiques, department stores and retailers
housed at South Coast Plaza proudly
display products “made in Italy” and the
many events planned during the
promotion will create a true feeling of the
Italian lifestyle in its entirety for
everyone to experience and enjoy. Take a
stroll through Italy at South Coast Plaza
by visiting the exhibit “Shoes for the starsItalian footwear in the International
cinema”.

SHOES
FOR the
stars
I
t takes one hundred different
operations to make a shoe.
The production of footwear, especially
when it is done by master craftsmen, is a
long and complex process. It requires
technical skill and demands attention to
detail. Even the simplest model, in
addition to the basic elements - sole,
upper, heel, lining - cannot do without a
broad range of accessories and
components.
Italians are rightly considered masters in
this field. The shoe manufacturers
of Vigevano, Riviera del Brenta, Tuscany
and The Marches are known throughout
the world. And it is to the Italian masters
that the filmdom’s greats turn, knowing
that Italian hands are the only ones that
can turn out original and quality
footwear, in modern or vintage styles. But
the big screen returned the compliment
by lending these peerless shoemakers a
fame that would have been unthinkable in
other eras.
The exhibit, “Shoes for the Stars – Italian
Footwear in International Cinema,”
presents the creations of Italian Master
Shoemakers in films that have come out
in the past twenty years. It begins – and
how could it be otherwise? – with an icon
of Italian cinema, La Dolce Vita, still one
of the greatest expressions of the Italian
lifestyle as it is perceived in the collective
imagination.
By agreement with the Italian Shoe
Manufacturers Association, ANCI,
ICE-ITALIAN STYLE is paying homage
to the unparalleled ability of Italian
shoemakers by highlighting, in particular,
their versatility in meeting the changing
needs of the film world. This is thanks to
their surprising ability to introduce
technological innovation into the field
while at the same time maintaining the
highest standards of style and design.
The visitor will find unique pieces made
to measure for famous feet, from Anita
Ekberg to Angelina Jolie, Jeremy Irons
to Orlando Bloom, Catherine Zeta-Jones
to Monica Bellucci. The wooden molds of
the feet of Hollywood’s greatest stars are
always lovingly
stored in the tiny workshops of
craftsmen.
It will be fascinating to see how this
collection, which was already an
extraordinary success in Istanbul last
June in the framework of “Italy on
Bosphorus,” fits into the New World, in
California. Yet further proof that Italian
footwear knows no borders.

“
hoes for the Stars”: 70 years
of Movies and Theatre narrated
by 26 pairs of “famous shoes”
worn by renowned international movie
actors and created by prestigious
Italian craftsmen for unforgettable films
and shows.
Fantastic shoes, unusual and even a bit
strange… brought to life by the
creativity of high caliber costume
designers who interpret and reconstruct
various historical periods by making use
of the workmanship of Italian craftsmen
to accomplish downright masterpieces.
The almost confidential relationship
between Italian fashion designers and
master craftsmen brings a language of
refined expression of form, color and
detail into being, not only by enabling
one to an insight of the emotions of the
days of yore, but by causing “Made in
Italy” footwear to be unique and
inimitable.
