choose to participate, the judges
will start coming around 8:30. The
directors will deliver the winners
their trophies the following week.
The weekend ends with the Sailboat
Race on Sunday morning.
I would like to take time to thank
everyone for their participation in
this year’s Daytime Parade. I can
honestly say, it was one of the best
years. The weather did not dampen
the spirits and creativity of this
organization. The floats were great
and fun. Andy Weinman and his
judges did a fantastic job ensuring
every entry was judged fairly
considering the circumstances. As
the rain cleared, the sounds of music
and laughter created a tremendous
atmosphere. Once again the fireworks
added a nice touch to evening. I do
believe that the weather just added
to the memories of another eventful
Water Carnival.
Remember the last full issue of the
news will be next weekend. So send
in any college bound information,
birthdays and Happy Thoughts for
the last issue.
In closing this week, I want to thank
everyone who participated in the
day Water Carnival. It looked like
everyone was having a blast even
through the downpour. I apologize
for the information flow about the
events, both day and night. From now
on, we will use the news line phone
number as a source of providing
information about the event. When
you call, there will be a message
about the event.
As exciting as last week was, this
weekend brings another adventure.
Saturday will be jam packed with fun
and events. The Regatta will kick the
day off at noon. During the Regatta,

are excited. The award ceremony

Former, long-time summer resident at Lake Winola, Howard F. Murphey, will celebrate his 104th
birthday on Saturday, August 20 at a 2:00 p.m.
“cake and ice cream” gathering with family and
friends at The Willowbrook Senior Living Community, Clarks Summit where he has resided since
May 2007. The Murphey Family cottage (formerly the Warne cottage owned by Howard’s second wife, the late Edna Soulsby Warne) is located
on the Tunkhannock shore and has been in the
Warne/Murphey family since purchased by Edna’s
mother, Emma Soulsby in 1933. Recently, ownership of the cottage was transferred to Donna and
Bill Saunders of Glenside, PA via its purchase by
a third-generation family member. Eventually,
Donna and Bill plan to replace the present cottage
with a new, permanent residence to make Lake
Winola their year-round home. Howard’s children/step-children -- Betty (Murphey) Alani; The
Rev. Canon William F. Murphey; Sandra (Warne)

The Wooden Rowboat
Tom Wolff
As far back as I can remember, my family had its traditional week at the lake. The land on Point road was
purchased by my great-grandfather, John G. Rees in
1929, and the cottage was built and finished in 1930.
My mother’s father died at a young age so when the
Rees family estate was established, my mother and
her sister received an equal part with the other children of John G. Two of my mother’s aunts were left in
control and one aunt in particular set the “rotation of
families” for the summer.
The annual trip to the lake was part of the fun. My
mother had been coming to the lake all of her life and
she was aware of what was in the cottage, and where a
person could go to purchase whatever else was needed. She was determined to be prepared so that once
we arrived, we would not have to leave for anything.
She would go to the store in Scranton and buy what
food supplies were needed for the week and my father
would pack all the groceries, pots and pans, and all
other necessities into the 57 Ford Fairlane. My father,
mother and I, being the youngest, would sit up front
while my sister and brothers would be in the back.
We would travel a few blocks and pick up “ Nana.”
From the time we left the house, my father would
complain about how much my mother’s mother, as
he called her, would pack with her for the week. Nana
would come out of the house and it would not matter
if she had all of her clothes packed into a empty stick
match box, my father would ask “ how am I going to
get all of her stuff in this car.” Nana would climb in
the back and we would proceed for two more stops
before our final destination. He would stop at a store
on Market street to get enough peanuts for the week,
and then we would stop at Kelleher tire and gas station. My father did business with
Mr. Kelleher and he would always
make arrangements to have some
rubber tubes blown up for us. Mr.
Kelleher would come out and give
all of us lollipops and then help
stuff us and the tubes in the back
seat. My brothers and sister would
sit on the tubes and away we’d go.
Depending on when our week
was, one of the most important
things to do was to put the wood13
en rowboat in the water so that it could “swell” before
use. The next day we would bail out the water and the
boat would be one of the most useful tools for recreation and survival. My father never took the week off
from work so he would leave with the car for the day,
and the boat was used to make daily rows over to Foster’s store for whatever my mother had forgotten. The
boat was also used for making trips to the swamp, for
jumping off in the middle of the lake, and for fishing with day old bread. We also tried on several occasions to water ski. We would take a piece of plywood
out from under the porch and tie a rope to the boat
and have my bother row as fast as he could. We were
unsuccessful at water skiing, but if accurate accounts
were kept, we would have set a record for standing
the longest time on a moving piece of wet plywood.
The assigned week evolved over the years to longer
time periods. Pure luck and my mothers perseverance to keep the cottage in our family allowed my
brothers, Marty and Dennis, and sister, Karen, and
I to own “El Retiro.” We are all grandparents now
and when the next generation comes to the cottage,
I know they will develop fond memories, a love of
the lake, and a family bond that ties them to the six
generations. That makes me very happy, and I know
my parent’s spirits sit on the old rockers on the front
porch watching the children and knowing that the
cottage will be forever in our family. However, I do
have one concern. My children, nieces and nephews
jump into their cars knowing that everything they
need will be up here, and they only need to bring a
change of clothes. Once here, they have food, a small
fishing boat, inboard motorboat, skis, and even a jet
ski at their convenience. They even have an indoor
bathroom. But I am sad to say, they have no wooden
rowboat to bond them together.
Water Carnival 2011 was an unprecedented event. As the skies darkened in
the morning, everyone was hoping and praying the rain would stay away. As the skies opened
up, it seemed that the day would be a washout. Who could have imagined that 26 participants
would bravely face the rain, and make Water Carnival 2011 one for the books, in a good way!
The enthusiam, detail, and beauty of the floats made one wonder if it was actually raining at
all. Each boat that passed by held smiling, singing, energetic participants. One couldn’t help
but laugh funny floats, tear up at the heatfelt floats, and clap like mad at the beautiful floats.
Congratulations and thank you to all who participated. You made Water Carnival worth the wait
and worth standing in the rain. Thank you to Andy Weinman, the director for the daytime parade.
Everyone is looking forward to the dock displays on Saturday, August 13th!

lessly to create the float? Enter Jim and Mickey
Snyder. Mickey was also volunteering at the
lasagna dinner prep, and she excitedly told the
news to her husband, Jim, when she got home.
He was shocked she didn’t offer their boat, and
immediately told her to call Ellen and offer their
boat to decorate. The plan was set. Stephan, his
family, and the Snyders spent hours in the Snyders’ boathouse tying, glittering, and ballooning that beautiful float.
On Saturday, as the floats rounded the
corner, everyone rushed out to watch the parade. Marissa still had no clue what a romantic boy she had on her hands. As she caught a
glimpse of her float, she turned to Stephan in
shock, and he dropped to one knee asking, “Marissa, will you marry me?” There wasn’t a dry
eye along the shore as their family, friends, and
the neighbors looked on. Marissa said yes! The
couple has started discussing plans for their upcoming wedding, but they’re enjoying engaged
life and taking it easy before diving into fulltime
wedding planning. Best of luck to Stephan and
Marissa! Thanks for letting us share in your
special day! By the way, sorry girls; Ellen and
Paul only have one nephew, and he’s taken!
Everyone has been dying to know who
Marissa is, if she said, “yes,” and who that romantic boy is that made that beautiful float.
Well, it all started as Ellen Wengen was baking
lasagna at the pavilion in preparation for the
Lasagna Dinner. She received a phone call from
her nephew, Stephan, asking for a little help. He
said he wanted to propose to his girlfriend at
Water Carnival; what did she think? Stephan,
a police officer in Exeter and Pittson Townships,
had been visiting his Aunt Ellen and Uncle Paul
since they moved to the lake, and always looks
forward to Water Carnival. He thought Lake
Winola’s Water Carnival would be the perfect
time to ask Marissa, a recently certified RN, to
marry him.
Ellen and Stephan immediately started
scheming. They’d invite his family, her family
(who had no idea what was about to happen),
and the couple’s friends. He said there was no
way he could wait until the nighttime to do a
night display, so they were set on a daytime
float. He wanted the float to say, “Marissa, will
you marry me?” and he wanted to propose to her
on the dock as the float passed by during the parade. There was a small glitch, how could they
hide the boat from Marissa as they worked tire-
