TAMA
About: TAMA was formed in 1987 as a leading resource for Tennessee’s
rapidly growing automotive manufacturing industry, led by the arrival of Nissan
North America and General Motors Spring Hill (originally Saturn Corporation). With
the addition of Volkswagen in 2010 as a third OEM, TAMA serves as the forum that
connects the state’s automotive manufacturing industry, including more than 1,000
suppliers and related businesses.
Mission: TAMA’s mission is to strengthen and expand Tennessee’s
automotive manufacturing industry. As the supply chain becomes increasingly
horizontal and complex over the past 30 years, the need for industry collaboration
has never been greater. To help Tennessee’s suppliers enhance their operational
excellence, TAMA connects members to various public and private sector resources
and offers opportunities for networking and sharing best practices through
industry events, supplier training and seminars. TAMA members are also engaged in
collaborative efforts with the State of Tennessee and other stakeholders to develop a
stronger workforce and to grow and bolster the supply chain.

Letter from the President
What an amazing time to be involved in
TAMA and automotive manufacturing
in Tennessee.
Our industry is on a roll with a record number
of new job and investment announcements
in 2013. The Brookings Institution report on
auto manufacturing in the state referred
to Tennessee as a “southern automotive
powerhouse.”
TAMA is on the move as well, experiencing
unprecedented growth with a 55 percent
increase in membership over the past year.
As the industry expands, TAMA continues
to create opportunities for members to
establish key connections and access
resources that facilitate business.
This is a critical time for Tennessee’s
automotive industry. In 2013, we worked
closely with Brookings as it conducted
an assessment of our state’s automotive
industry. We are also working with the
Michigan-based Center for Automotive
Research (CAR) to identify ways to grow
the auto sector in the southern United
States. Research by both Brookings and CAR
recognizes the importance of feeding the
workforce pipeline, growing the supply base
and fostering local innovation as keys to
advancing the industry to the next level.
and new initiatives. We encourage you to
become more involved in TAMA. If interested,
I invite you to contact me or one of our board
members to get involved.
Great opportunities lie ahead that will bring
greater prosperity and higher quality jobs
to Tennessee.

For 2014 and 2015, TAMA has prioritized
those three areas – workforce, supply chain,
and innovation. Our members will notice
this in event programing, committee activity,
TAMA’S PRIORITIES: INNOVATION • WORKFORCE • SUPPLY CHAIN GROWTH

The Brookings Institution
Study on the Automotive
Industry in Tennessee:
Key Strategies to Propel
Tennessee Forward
INNOVATION: Encourage innovation through R&D
tax credits, and facilitate collaboration between private
industry and the state’s research institutions to overcome
competition from lower-cost countries and move
Tennessee from a primarily production location to a center of excellence
for innovation and R&D.
SUPPLY CHAIN: Prioritize growth of the supplier marketplace by
encouraging collaboration and policies that create avenues for exporting,
reward R&D and improve access to capital for technology transfer and
capital expenditures.
WORKFORCE: Lead the way in developing creative solutions to resolve the
challenges, not only of the large automakers, but of small and medium-sized
companies; leverage the state’s regional economic development zones to
create training programs tailored to the automotive specialties in those regions.
“
The auto sector is on an upswing, and Tennessee
is enjoying the
benefits of the industry’s southern migration. In 2013,
The Brookings Institution provided our state with public sector strategies to
maintain competitiveness. TAMA and its board of directors are advocates of
the report and are dedicated to doing what they can to help the industry grow.
As an employee of Magneti Marelli, I’m excited to support TAMA’s efforts.

TENNESSEE:
The Heart of the
New Automotive Industry
Tennessee’s automotive industry continues to be a
DRIVING FORCE of the state’s economy.
2013 was another year of strong growth in automotive manufacturing with more
than 7,000 new automotive jobs and more than $1.7 billion in investments
announced. Tennessee was declared “State of the Year” for economic
development and No. 1 for automotive manufacturing by Business Facilities
magazine for the fourth year in a row.
That success is exciting, though our sights are on the future. To stay competitive,
we are committed to moving Tennessee up the value chain by supporting
supplier excellence, improving workforce development and expanding research
and development opportunities. By focusing on product innovation and
advances in manufacturing technology, Tennessee is on track to
become known as a hub for innovation in addition to the reputation
of being a world-class location for production and assembly.

TAMA
Hall of Fame
In 2012, The Tennessee Automotive Manufacturers Association
announced the formation of a hall of fame to recognize individuals and
organizations for outstanding contributions to the automotive industry
in Tennessee. The creation of the TAMA Hall of Fame coincided with the
organization’s 25th anniversary.
SKIP LEFAUVE 1934-2003
The veteran General Motors executive was named president of Saturn
Corporation in 1986 with the assignment of developing an assembly
plant in Spring Hill. Saturn—“a different kind of car company”—rolled out
its first cars in 1990 and went on to become one of the most innovative
automobile companies of its time. LeFauve became identified with
management and technology successes at Spring Hill.
MARVIN T. RUNYON 1924-2004
A former CEO of Nissan North America, Runyon supervised construction
of major Nissan assembly and engine plants, which opened in Smyrna in
1981. Nissan’s light truck manufacturing facility was, at the time, the largest
auto manufacturing investment in the state and served as a catalyst for the
industry in Tennessee. U.S. SENATOR LAMAR ALEXANDER
As Tennessee governor from 1979-87, Alexander recruited Nissan and
General Motors to establish major auto manufacturing and assembly
plants in the state and set the foundation for future auto industry growth
through state-led economic development initiatives. Today, automotive
manufacturing is one of Tennessee’s leading industries. 6
Then Gov. Lamar Alexander shakes hands with Marvin Runyon, then
chief executive of Nissan North America, after the first Nissan truck
rolls out in June 1983.
Nissan North America’s Smyrna assembly and engine plant,
constructed during Runyon’s tenure, now makes more than 500,000
cars, trucks and sport utility vehicles each year.
Skip LeFauve, affectionately known as “Mr. Saturn,” is pictured here

2013 Events
Making Connections: THE SUPPLIER
OPPORTUNITY FAIR
In June 2013, TAMA and the Southern Automotive
Women’s Forum hosted the Supplier Opportunity
Fair, which brought purchasing executives from
General Motors, Volkswagen, Nissan, Magneti Marelli,
Bridgestone, ABC Group Fuel Systems, Calsonic Kansei,
Cummins Filtration and Manufacturers Industrial Group
together with more than 100 suppliers. Suppliers also
participated in breakout sessions on “Achieving Supplier
Excellence,” “Purchasing Pitfalls” and “How to Bridge the
Cultural Divide.” Christine Karbowiak, Chief Administrative
Officer and E.V.P. of Community and Corporate Relations, offered
the group an in depth look into Bridgestone’s operations. TAMA will
host the fair again in the summer of 2014, with the addition of the first Supplier
Excellence Awards Presentation.
TAMA ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
For the past 23 summers, more than 140 TAMA members have
gathered for 18 holes of golf at the Hermitage Golf Course outside
of Nashville. Novice golfers play alongside golf aficionadas with
prizes awarded by flight, providing a great opportunity to network
in a relaxed atmosphere. In 2013, Director of Government Affairs
of Magna International, Frank Ervin, provided a keynote address to the
group before playing a round. Proceeds from the golf tournament
benefit the TAMA scholarship fund.

A
A look at Bridgestone’s
SUSTAINABILITY-FOCUSED PRODUCTS
and Tour of the “BEECH”
At the March 2013 quarterly TAMA Member Meeting, members
toured the Warren Bridgestone Plant and the Bridgestone
Environmental Education Classroom and Habitat (BEECH)
to learn about the company’s new sustainability-focused
products. TAMA Board Member and Bridgestone Vice President
of Manufacturing Barry Owens hosted the group at the Warren
County plant along with Warren Plant Manager Mitch Burke.
PROMOTING BEST PRACTICES
with UT’s Center for Industrial Services
In an effort to connect suppliers with industry resources, TAMA established a
partnership with the University of Tennessee’s Center for Industrial Services in
2013. TAMA and UT-CIS hosted a series of showcases that educated suppliers
on manufacturing processes improvement techniques such as “Toyota Kata” and
“Training within Industry.” Members also learned about implementing new OSHA
and environmental standards, including ISO 14000. Instructors offered attendees
insight into how services provided by UT-CIS can help
improve safety and quality, increase efficiency and ultimately boost a
manufacturer’s bottom line. Seminars were held at TAMA member facilities across
the state including:
“
We often find that TAMA
members, suppliers in particular, are
better connected to the state and the local resources needed to help
them meet their workforce needs. TAMA also helps members share best
practices on new product launches, quality, safety… the list
goes on. That’s a huge help to Nissan and a huge benefit
to the region.

The Southern
Automotive Conference
The Southern Automotive Conference is presented jointly by the automotive
manufacturing associations of Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama, rotating among the
three states each year. As industry focus has increasingly shifted south, the conference
has become the premier venue for connecting with OEMs and suppliers in the region,
attracting executives from across the United States and overseas.
Tennessee hosted the conference in 2012, bringing more than 500 industry
executives to Chattanooga. Themed “The Driving Force: People, Place, Progress,”
the conference focused on the latest trends in workforce recruitment and retention,
innovation in manufacturing processes and supply chain management, and the auto
industry’s Southern migration. The Mississippi Automotive Manufacturers Association
hosted the 2013 SAC in Biloxi. This year’s conference will be held in Birmingham. The
conference returns to Tennessee in 2015 in Nashville.

TAMA
Scholarship Fund
Having a ready supply of skilled,
technically-trained talent is critical
to the future of Tennessee’s
automotive manufacturing
industry. STEM-related fields (science,
technology, engineering and math) are prime
movers of regional and national prosperity.
TAMA supports STEM career and technical
education initiatives that bridge postsecondary
education with strong, local employer engagement
to better prepare students for the current and future
marketplace.
In 2012 and 2013, TAMA awarded scholarships to promising, young STEM students at
Chattanooga State Community College. In 2014, TAMA will continue to focus on providing
scholarship opportunities to students across the state, recognizing that an investment in
these students is an investment in the future of the automotive community.

“
More than 30
years ago, Tennessee’s economy
was transformed by the arrival of Japanese
automaker Nissan in Smyrna. Now, $30 billion in
investment later and five years after the onset of the
Great Recession, an
exponentially larger and
more intensely competitive Tennessee auto
industry has begun to grow under new conditions.
This environment presents Tennessee with both opportunities
and challenges, as it considers how to secure more and better
jobs and prosperity in what the state has recognized as a
definitive ‘advanced industry.’

Sector up the Value Chain”
