This August, as we say “goodbye” to Covina Bowl, it gives us a
great opportunity to think about what makes Chapter I a longstanding, strong GWRRA Chapter.
At the risk of being outrageously obvious, it is not our location that has made us great, it’s YOU!
It is not that our charter and our home base landed us in
“Covina”. As a matter of fact, Chapter I has one of the widest geographical spreads among its active participants in all of California —
from Riverside to Crestline to Santa Fe Springs. Some of us travel
a few miles, some have a much longer round trip.
It is not that we’ve had the convenience of meeting in a banquet
room at the bowling alley with enough room to spread out our breakfast plates, our store, our door prizes—and a place to welcome
guests.
It’s not about the room, it’s about the people!
So, as we meet at Denny’s for the first time this August 10th, if
we have each of you, then we have exactly what we need to continue in the great traditions of Chapter I. In the words of the “Cheer’s!”

New Meeting
Location
As we move our Chapter gathering to a new location after 20
some years it comes with mixed emotions. The fond memories
of all of the great times we’ve had over the past 13 years at Covina Bowl and the excitement of a new beginning.
Unfortunately, we may not be at the August meeting to celebrate
with you since we will be landing at LAX from Maui just a few
short hours prior to the meeting time. That is if the plane is on
time.
There are times when you’re looking for a good hot meal, our
new location will definitely provide it for you. And, a good hot
cup of coffee to help wake you up and get you started.
Tom Bodett always says “we’ll leave the lights on for ya”…
We’re Dan and Lavonne, and we will always leave the welcome
mat out for ya!

First Aid Kit?
There have been several requests for an article about first aid
kits and that sounds like a reasonable request, so, here you
go.
Is bigger better? Referring to your first aid kit on the bike,
well, everything is relative! Space is limited and many “wants”
need to be put on the back burner so the “needs” have priority
seating with you.
Here's some suggested items:

























CPR Mask with one way valve
Mylar blanket
2-3 pair of disposable gloves in a zip lock bag. Non-latex
is the best choice.
1-2 small roller gauze 2”-3”
1-2 large rolled gauze 4”
4 absorbent pads
Assorted nonstick gauze pads
Assorted Band Aids
Adhesive tape
Plastic/waterproof tape
Saline eye wash
2 eye pads (both eyes are always covered)
Triangular bandage
Safety glasses
Trauma scissors
Tweezers
Waterless hand sanitizer
Iodine swabs
Antibiotic ointment
Chemical cold pack
Aspirin/Tylenol/Ibuprofen
Waste bag
Flashlight
Pencil
Scratch pad
Most items are available at your favorite store. Some are
available in specialty stores. Harbor Freight has a good
assortment of first aid items.
It makes no difference where you get your supplies, please
get them! You'll have a customized kit before you know it!
And don't forget to pick a date to check your supplies and be
diligent about checking.

A Few Tips for Motorcyclists
Here are just a few tips for you to consider while riding:
Riding in blind spots: One of the most dangerous mistakes motorcyclists make is to linger in other driver’s blind spots. Motorcycles easily disappear in the invisible area between typical car and truck mirror coverage. Few drivers seem to practice head
checks to determine if a lane change is safe. A motorcyclist is riding along, and all of a sudden a vehicle is coming into their lane.
A rule of thumb is to ride through blind spots. Also, avoid changing lanes into a driver’s blind spot and position your motorcycle
within your lane to ensure optimum visibility in traffic.
Accelerating through an intersection: It is tempting to twist the throttle through an intersection and try to beat a red light. It is a
reflex many of us have, and even the smartest riders have been known to do it. The problem is that intersections are the number
one location where crashes occur. It is important to remember that motorcycles have small visual impact and can be lost in surrounding traffic. The small frontal profile not only makes us harder to see, it can also make it more difficult for others to judge our
distance and approach speed. Keeping this in mind, you can see why drivers often pull out in front of motorcycles, thinking it is
safe to proceed.
Stopping too close to the vehicle in front of you: Too many riders position themselves poorly for escape when stopping behind
vehicles at a stop light or stop sign. Give yourself plenty of room to maneuver in case a driver approaching from the rear can’t stop
in time. This means positioning your motorcycle well away from the vehicle in front of you and off to one side, usually in the left
wheel track. This position allows room to move forward, past the car in front of you. It also has the added benefit of keeping your
tires off the often slippery center portion of the lane. Be sure to keep your eyes on your mirrors to monitor vehicles approaching
from the rear. Keep your motorcycle in first gear so you can respond quickly, if necessary.
Signaling too late: Miscommunication is a major cause of traffic related mishaps. One of the most common examples of this is
slowing down or maneuvering before signaling your intent, which forces surrounding traffic to guess what you are up to. Well timed
communication insures that traffic around you is not surprised by your actions. Remember, simply rolling off the throttle may slow
your motorcycle enough to require the typical car driver behind you to brake, but he doesn’t know what you are going to do. Signal
three to five seconds prior to turning and activate your brake light early to alert drivers of a change in direction or speed.

Life is but a Journey, please be part of ours!
For three years, Pam and I served as California’s Asst. District Directors under Bill and Rene Johnson and one of our monthly duties was to write an article for this very newsletter. Over the years, I got into the routine of dedicating certain issues to particular
themes: in January, I would write about the officers’ meeting; in May, the topic was always the Region F Convention and July was
about Wing Ding. The August article is perpetually dedicated to our own California District Rally and this year is no different.
If this were a typical year, I would write about how the opportunities for early registration ends in a few short days on August 9th
and how there are 5 sets of tires being raffled. If this was any other year, I would hype the professional Polynesian dancers performing during the Sunday night that is included in the cost of the dinner. Any year, other than this one, I would be bragging about
the 1,000 turn ride we put together and how you needed to come to Visalia as it sits at the gateway to Sequoia National Park with
some of the most unique scenery in the world. Lastly, if this was a typical year, I would remind you of all the educational opportunities awaiting you, from the Advanced Rider Course to the Trike Rider Course to the myriad of seminars available.
Although these are all compelling reasons to attend this year’s District Convention, they shouldn’t be your primary motivation. This
week, California lost one of its newest Chapter Directors to cancer. CA-1F’s Tom Klock went into the hospital at the beginning of
the week, was released to hospice on Friday and passed away the following Monday. If you have been following the e-mails that
Pam has been sending out, you know of the uncommonly high number of our members that have passed away recently. These
losses should serve as a reminder of the real reason we ever attend any of these events: to spend time with our friends. The excess of funerals that we have attended this year serve as a reminder of just how temporary our time on this earth truly is.
While Tom was in the hospital, his chapter members spent shifts sitting with him around the clock so that he would not be alone
and to support and spell his wife, Tammy. This is the sort of love you routinely find throughout GWRRA. If this was any other
year, I would encourage you to come for all of the activities; this year we are inviting you to come spend time with friends. If you
would like to send Tammy your condolences, her address is 896 Banock St., Spring Valley, CA 91977 and her e-mail address is
cd.ca1f@gmail.com. If you would like to attend Tom’s celebration of life, his memorial service will be held on August 3rd at 4pm at
Flinn Springs County Park, 14787 Old Highway 80, El Cajon, CA 92021.
Hopefully, Pam and I will see many of you at Tom’s service this Saturday and all of you in Visalia at the end of the month. Until
then, ride well, ride often and be good to one another.

Come and let’s play at the District convention in
Visalia! We are hosting a free obstacle course
for you to practice your riding skills and to compete if you want. The Amazing Team Challenge is a fun-filled bike riding activity that will
invigorate the young at heart as well as revitalize the more seasoned, mature riders. It is designed for teams as well as individuals to determine who will end up with the fastest times. It’s
all about fun, safety, and knowledge!
GWRRA is presenting this riding challenge for
the participants at the CA District convention.
This is a timed, competitive event, involving a
straight-away, right and left turns, a couple of
360 degree circles, a cone weave, stopping in a
box after the timed run and a lot of fun. It is
open to all riding skill levels—it can be easy for
the novice rider and humbling for the more advanced rider. After all, this is a riding organization so why wouldn’t you all want to try your
hand at it?
The best time to make friends
Is before you need them.

If you are interested in participating, you may
practice riding the course on the range at the
parking lot adjacent to the Holiday Inn all day
Saturday. The official timed event will be held
on Sunday morning, 10am to 12:30pm, immediately following the Gold Angels demonstration
team performance. Even if you don’t plan to
ride the event, come out anyway to cheer on
your favorite team or rider!
Be there for a Chapter I member in need.
You may sign-up for this event when you register at the convention; look for the ATC registration table.

Pre-registration is important to our Chapter, the first rally of the year. It is difficult to plan well without knowing who’s coming. Please be mindful that it is
equally as important for the Chapter rallies that are not ours. Pre-registration is
the highest form of etiquette for our fellow Gold Wingers that work just as hard
on their events as we do on ours. Please check out the upcoming rallies and
take the time to pre-register. YOUR participation makes it all so much better!

Newsletter Policy
Chapter CA1-I’s newsletter is distributed free of charge to Members
in Good Standing of GWRRA or GWRRA Boosters who participate
in Chapter “I” activities. The newsletter is also distributed free to all
advertisers and certain motorcycle related businesses or interests.
Remember, the newsletter is what you make it. Please submit
articles that you think will be of interest or informative to other
Chapter members. The articles can be about your favorite ride, bike
accessory or just a funny story. All articles submitted may be edited
at the discretion of the Chapter Director. Controversial material may
be edited at chapter staff discretion and not be printed.
Please submit your typed article by e-mail to the Chapter Director
by the 20th of the month to be included in the following month’s
issue. Material may not be reprinted without permission.
