“Connections are foundational to the strength
of the aviation industry. The National Airports
Conference adds to aerial connections by
providing aviation stakeholders a unique
opportunity to connect on federal affairs, industry
partner issues, and AAAE internal committee
concerns. Like me, everyone should plan to be
there and make all the connections they can.

elegates to AAAE’s 2016 F. Russell Hoyt National Airports
Conference (NAC) will gather in Orlando, Florida, October 2-4 to
discuss timely topics, engage in important networking events, and
participate in debates over the future direction of the nation’s aviation
industry. The 2016 NAC, hosted by Orlando International Airport, will focus on
steps the industry can take to create strategies that work in today’s and
tomorrow’s aviation marketplace.
This signature AAAE event will begin on Sunday, October 2, with two networking
receptions: one for newcomers to AAAE and/or the NAC, followed by a reception
for all delegates, newcomers and veterans alike. These introductory gatherings
will allow delegates to meet their colleagues in an informal setting and will set
the tone for the two days of discussions that will follow.
The NAC will conclude on Tuesday, October 4, at 5 p.m. with the popular Carter
Cash drawing for $100 bills. You must stay throughout the afternoon on Tuesday
to be eligible to win a $100 prize.
A tour of the Orlando International Airport led by airport officials will take place
Wednesday, October 5, beginning at 9 a.m. Transportation will be provided. Space
on the airport tour is limited, so sign up now.
Plan to arrive early in Orlando to take advantage of additional educational
opportunities by attending the AAAE Accreditation Final Interview Workshop and
AAAE Essentials of Airport Business Management Workshop.

In this incredibly dynamic industry that we all love, this conference uniquely combines relevant and timely topics, networking and face time
with the movers and shakers, and a little bit of fun thrown in for good measure. Where else would you rather be than at the NAC?

Around Town
It’s possible to be in Orlando
without visiting the Disney theme
parks…but, would you want to? The Disney
parks are a highlight of any trip to Orlando,
but the city and area provide many more
entertainment opportunities.
For information on visiting Disney parks, go
to disneyworld.disney.go.com
Just a few of the other many
entertainment highlights in the
area are:
The Kennedy Space Center Visitor
Complex tells the epic story of the U.S.
space program — from the first day through
the present.
The NEW SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium,
with the area’s only 360-degree underwater
tunnel. Exhibits include both Atlantic and
Pacific ocean sealife.
Safari Wilderness Ranch, which offers a
260-acre preserve.
Chocolate Kingdom — Interactive Factory
Adventure Tour, a journey that uncovers how
chocolate transforms from the bean into a
chocolate bar.
The Orlando Eye lifts you up to 400 feet to
experience breathtaking 360-degree views of
surrounding Central Florida.
Weather
Orlando’s weather in October
includes temperatures rising to 85
degrees during the day and dropping to 66
degrees at night. A sweater or light jacket may
be needed in the evening. Average rainfall for
the month is 3 inches.
Cuisine
From the most serious of foodies
to the most casual of diners,
Orlando has plenty of restaurant options to
satisfy every taste and budget. From theme
park dining and dinner shows to farm-fresh
and gourmet, this city has something for
everyone.
Downtown Orlando is both a vibrant
entertainment district and a collection of trendy
neighborhoods. Dine from an impressive range
of global and regional flavors.
Make dining reservations along Restaurant
Row on Sand Lake Road. In the past decade,
Sand Lake Road has become a magnet
for restaurateurs who are looking for a
location that would be convenient for locals
and travelers. Just a few minutes from
downtown Orlando and a short distance from
International Drive, the convention center
and I-4, Sand Lake Road has proven to be
that perfect location. Today Sand Lake Road
is home to more than two dozen upscale and
casual restaurants.
In the Lake Buena Vista area, the menus of
Cat Cora, Todd English, Wolfgang Puck and
Don Shula attract visitors.
The fully restored Waterhouse residence and
carpentry shop in Maitland demonstrates
what life was like over a century ago for a
middle-class family.
The Morse Museum of American Art in
Winter Park features the most comprehensive
collection of the works by Louis Comfort
Tiffany.
The Orlando Museum of Art presents
exhibitions of local, regional, national and
international significance.
The Orlando Science Center creates
opportunities for experiential science learning
with hands-on exhibits.
Henry P. Leu Gardens includes a butterfly
garden, a tropical rain forest, and more.
The Mennello Museum of Modern Art
includes the permanent collection of paintings
by self-taught artist Earl Cunningham.
The Outdoors
The year-round sunshine means
that numerous outdoor events are possible
and pleasurable. More than 170 golf courses
are located in the Orlando area, along with
100 state and local parks.
Museums
Madame Tussauds is worldrenowned for the creation of detailed and
lifelike wax figures that pay homage to A-list
celebrities from film and television, sports
icons, musicians from all genres, and notable
figures from history and pop culture.
Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens
is open from September through the end of
June.

The National Airports Conference is named in honor
of F. Russell Hoyt, A.A.E., who led AAAE from 1959
until his retirement in 1983. Even after his formal
retirement, Russ remained active in the profession

The Final Interview Workshop is one of the best tools available for those
seeking to become accredited. The information provided was extremely
helpful in preparing me for the final interview. I would definitely recommend
it to accreditation candidates! — Darren S. Large, A.A.E., Mgr., Facilities &
Projects, DM AIRPORTS, LTD., Morristown Municipal Airport
After a lengthy time of procrastination to finalize the AAAE accreditation
process by sitting for the oral exam, the AAAE-sponsored Final Interview
Workshop gave me the confidence to commit to accomplishing this last
step — contacting my Regional Examiner, developing a study program,
and setting a date for the oral exam. The class offered great instruction
and coaching, which gave me the necessary tools to stay motivated and
complete the process. — Emily Underhill, P.E., A.A.E., Division DirectorDevelopment, Lee County Port Authority
