The glory of Spring and the awakening it brings,
is the joy in the tune that the bluebird sings.
It is a chance for us to improve on the days that lie ahead,
to make sure the bounty of our blessings keep our hearts
and souls well fed.

Exalted Ruler’s Message
As we begin the new fiscal year. I want to thank every
member for the trust you have placed in me. It is truly an
honor to serve the Lodge as Exalted Ruler. I will work
hard to uphold the virtues of charity, justice, brotherly
love and fidelity.
As the old year comes to a close so does the 2015 2016 membership card. The officers will be working the
door to the lounge checking cards. This is a requirement
of our license so please cooperate with the officers as
they do their job; they are volunteers too.
We have an exciting year ahead of us. My special focus
this year is on Brotherly Love and Charity. Many events
are planned where we can gather for the good of the
lodge. Together we can make this year a fun, cohesive,
and prosperous year. Together is the important part
along with showing brotherly love
I appreciate your support and continued volunteering for
our great lodge over the next twelve months.

Elk of the Month
I would like to thank Sandra (Sam) Williams for her
hard work in getting the word out in the community. She
is our Elk of the Month for April. We recently got a picture in the St Augustine record of Bingo Chairman Bob
Catuto presenting a check for $500.00 to the Boy Scout
troop 345.

The Lodge is serves a tasty breakfast on Sunday mornings
from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM.

Tiki Bar Closed
Due to some serious maintenance issues, the Tiki Bar will
be closed until further notice. A major renovation is needed
to correct the problems; we’ll keep everyone updated.
2016/17 Dues
All renewals received in March have been processed and the
cards mailed. Mail is checked daily and cards processed the
same day as the renewal is received. For members who live
in St Augustine, your card will be placed at the bar for you to
pick up. If the card is mailed, depending on where you live
and the postal service, you should receive the card within
four or five days of submitting the renewal.
Remember, a 2016/17 green membership card is required to
enter the Lodge on or after April 1st. Bartenders will have a
list of members who have renewed in case the card is late.
This year, only members will receive a door key card.
Spouses will receive an Identification Card. The “Spouse”
stamp was added so the bartenders can quickly identify
Lodge 829 spouses, who are permitted to purchase drinks
themselves; spouses from other Lodges are treated as a
guest (signed in by an Elks member, who must order and
purchase alcoholic beverages for them).

Hand & Hand, Building a Future for Children
WOW, a New Year and a New Beginning. Once again I
would like to thank all the Eland members who have given me the opportunity to
serve you as your President this year. We have many exciting activities on our
schedule for 2016 – 2017, some tried and true and some brand new.
I would like to congratulate Past Eland President, Joan Geronimo, her Officer
and Committee Chair Ladies for a great 2015 – 2016 year. Thank you so much
for keeping Eland strong.
My theme this year is “Hand & Hand, Building a Future for the Children”, colors
are Pink, and Turquoise with a little touch of Sand and the symbols are Sea
Shells, Pink Hearts and White Orchids.
I would like to thank Mr. Ted Beal for doing our Installation of Officers on Saturday, March 19th. Your officers are Sharyn Grace, Vice President, Ethel Picknally,
Secretary, Elizabeth Bastedo, Treasurer, Janet Masters, Parliamentarian, and
Elizabeth Wise, Chaplain. Your Committee Chair Ladies are 365 Club, Shirley
Mickle, Publicity, Linda Rittenhouse, Membership Book, Sharyn Grace, Birthdays
and Get Well, Brenda Povia, Cake Coordinator, Sharyn Grace, and Visitations/In
-House Activities/FLOE Events, Joan Geronimo. Thank you everyone who has
taken a position in our organization, you are very much appreciated. And I would
like each member to remember, “Eland may be Small, but, we are Mighty”.
Our first big fundraising event for the year is May 14th, Eland’s Second Annual
Paula’s Ball. Please mark your calendars now and join us for this fun filled
event, cocktails at 6 PM and dinner will be “served” at 7 PM and then we will
dance the night away to “Southern Style”. The proceeds from this event will benefit “The Florida Elks Children’s Therapy Services”. The tickets for this Big
Event are $35 per person and the dress is Semi-Formal (remember it is a Fun
Filled Ball). Tickets will be available from any Eland member, they will be on
sale at the Lodge every Monday during Monday Night Pasta, on Orientation
night, on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays in April and every Friday night during the
dinner hour. All members, please bring “Your Favorite Thing” for our Raffle Basket, all items are needed by our meeting.
Orientation for new Elks Members will be Tuesday, April 5th at 6:30 PM, come
join Sharyn and me as we share Eland with the new incoming members and their
spouses. Eland’s first meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 6th at 7:30 PM in
the back Hall and I encourage each of you to stay after to enjoy each other’s
friendship and share ideas. A “New” activity for Eland members or anyone who
would like additional information on becoming an Eland member is Saturday,
April 9th at Noon at Applebee’s. So let’s all have lunch.

Always Serve with a Smile
In 2015-16, the Elks National Foundation
launched the Elks Scholar Service Trips initiative. The ENF has
now sponsored three service trips. The next trip will take place in
June 2016.
The ENF knows Elks scholars are dedicated to service. Since
the inaugural trip to Manistique, Mich., Elks scholars have been
serving communities across the nation in the name of the Elks.
These trips offer Elks scholars the opportunity to learn about societal issues, serve those in need in the name of the Elks, and
connect with their Elks family.

Valuable Student scholar and
participant on the winter trip,
first connected with her Elks
family when her sponsoring
Lodge, Santa Ana, Calif.,
Lodge No. 794, recognized her
for receiving an MVS Scholarship. After serving on the winter trip, she learned how big
her Elks family is. In her blog
post— “Always Serve with a
Smile”—she writes about a volunteer shift at a local hospital
where she met a patient who
just so happened to be an Elk.
After explaining that she was
an Elks scholar who recently
served on a trip, the patient had this to say:
“You never know whom you’re going to meet or whom
you’re going to impact, so always serve with a smile
and you’ll be remembered just for that.”

Important Information
The following are procedures from the House Rules & Steering Committee
governing use of the social quarters. Pay particular attention to the areas
with bold type—they pertain to spouses, guests and the purchase of alcoholic beverages; these procedures must be strictly followed to keep the Lodge
in compliance with State Law and Elks Statutes. Also note that only Elk
“Members” may sign in guests and that guests must wear a wristband while
at the Lodge.
Use of the Social Quarters (Lounge, Dining Room, Game Room)
Members and Visiting Members will be admitted to the Social Quarters upon
presenting a valid Elks membership card. Only spouses of St Augustine Elks
Lodge members with a valid Identification Card may be admitted and use
social facilities in the absence of their member spouses. Persons with identification cards from other Lodges must be accompanied by and signed in by
an Elks member and follow the “guest” procedures (wristband, etc.).
Lists of current membership candidates (new, transfers or reinstatements) are posted on the Lounge Bulletin Board.
Members wanting to comment on a prospective candidate should
contact a Lodge Officer or send an email to: elks829secretary@gmail.com.
A list of bills-to-be-paid and detailed budget information is available at the Wednesday meetings.
A delinquency list is posted in the Lounge; remind people you
know on the list to pay their dues or contact the Secretary if
there is an issue.
Please notify the Secretary (elks829secretary@gmail.com or
(904)471-2829 when your address, phone or email changes.
No pets are allowed except certified service dogs.
Only valid St Augustine Lodge Members and Visiting Elks Members may
bring guests into the Social Quarters. Guests must be signed in by a member in the Lodge guest book each time they are brought in to use the facilities. Guests will be issued wristbands which must be worn while on the
Lodge premises; removal of a wristband before leaving the Lodge will lead
to sanctions for the guest and sponsoring member.

No person may be a guest more than (3) times before s/he must seek membership in the Lodge.
No guest may directly order or purchase an alcoholic beverage.
No guest may remain after the Member or Visiting Member leaves.
A Bartender or Lodge Officer shall have the authority to refuse service to anyone at any time.
Suspension of Social Quarters Privileges
In accordance with Lodge By-laws, the House Committee Chair may suspend
the privileges of a member or spouse for the following reasons:

Offensive or obnoxious behavior or language

All 9-13 year old boys and girls are eligible to spend a memorable week at the Florida Elks Youth Camp in Umatilla, even
those without the $180 fee. Activities include s’mores, archery, swimming, canoeing, arts and crafts, capture the flag,
soccer, movies, climbing the challenge ropes course and
more.
Each of the camp’s 52 cabins has heat, A/C, a full bathroom,
and sleeps up to 9, including staff.
The camp is accredited through the American Camping Association and provides a 2 to 7 staff to camper ratio, and maintains a dedicated infirmary staffed with registered nurses.
There are 6 week-long sessions starting June 19 that include
activities, three meals a day, bedtime snack and airconditioned cabins. The counselor to camper ratio is 2 to 7,
plus nurses are on staff. The FEYC is accredited through the
American Camping Association.
If you can’t afford the $180 cost of a week at camp, contact
the Lodge for sponsorship of your child or grandchild. Children of any active or veteran military service personnel can
camp for free during the 7th week of camp, July 31-August 6.
All children must provide an application. Visit the FEYC site
for dates, application and other details.

Veterans Honored with Luncheon at the Lodge
On Monday, March 21, 2016, St Augustine Elks welcomed residents
of the Clyde E. Lassen Veteran's Nursing Home and Allegro for a
hearty meal and companionship.
Members are urgently needed to
help put on these luncheons and
to spend some time with the veterans. Also, singers or musicians are wanted to provide
some entertainment. If you want
to help, please come at Noon on
the third Monday of every month.

Energy drinks are reaching their peak in popularity but manufacturers continue
to sell mass quantities to their youthful target audience. The most popular of the
new energy drinks is Red Bull, which promises to give its drinkers “wings.
There are now numerous brands of energy drinks that seem to be sold everywhere. They claim to stimulate the mind and body but can have adverse effects
when mixed with alcohol. Combined, they make a person want to drink more
and mask the signs of drunkenness.

Energy drink manufacturers are no longer allowed to make high-caffeine drinks
with alcohol, but young people mix their own. High levels of caffeine can boost
heart rate and blood pressure, causing palpitations, according to National Institute of Health. Alcohol makes people dehydrated, and the caffeine in the energy
drinks is a diuretic which also causes people to lose water, worsening the effects of dehydration.

alcohol to get a high without getting sleepy. Fatigue is the body’s way of saying
