BY JESSE MATTOX
I want to thank everyone that attended the Ridgecrest meeting and Bike Blessing,
we had a great turn out. Bike Night was a huge success, thanks Kip, job well done.
A big thanks to the Ladies of Harley, the bake sale was Fabulous and for those that
didn’t get to participate in the cake walk, you’ll have another chance. Please
remember to check the calendar for up coming events, the board at the shop and
call your friends, but don’t miss out on all the fun.
I hope that everyone that went to Laughlin enjoyed them selves and came home safe and sound. I
heard that Arizona Bike Week was enjoyed by all. The pictures were really great so please continue
to share them with everyone. (HOG# 2192091) Today we have the ride to Carpinteria, please
remember hand signals I can’t stress how important this is. If you are new and don’t know please
see a road captain; you can identify them by the black and orange braid on their arm.
Bike night will be May 10th, starts sharply at 4:00pm. Kip has really made an effort to change things
up, so please stop by and show your support…
Ride safe and have fun!

ROAD CAPTAIN’S
CORNER
Good morning,
Last month we all rode to the Santa Anita racetrack in
Arcadia. Through the mountain and over the hills we
went. I hope you all had as much fun as I did. We bet on
a few races, had lunch and enjoyed looking at those
magnificent horses. The destination today is Carpenteria.
It should be a beautiful day. Have you ever wondered
how we come up with the destinations for our Chapter
rides? The road captains get together twice a year and
plan out our Chapter rides for each month. If you like
where we have been taking you or if you have any
suggestions on where to go, please let us know. After
each ride, you are given a “rate the ride card”. Please fill
it out and hand it any Road Captain or Officer. We really
want you all to enjoy these rides and destinations. Let’s
have some fun.

GOOD MORNING!
This year is almost half over, man time flies. May
31st your Road Captains are hosting a "7 Card Poker
Run". Ken Gentry put this great route together. There is
a BIG map posted at our dealership, so stop by and check
it out. Also, there are fliers at our dealership. See you on
the 31st!
THUNDER! THUNDER! THUNDER! Thunder on
the Lot is only a month and a half away. It's going to be
huge! The second largest charity event west of the
Mississippi. A lot of work goes into an event like this and
volunteers are still needed. If you are interested in
volunteering please sign the sheet at the round table
(make sure to include your contact numbers) or you can
call me at 661-860-8164 and also by my e-mail jeffbrcchog@hotmail.com. It's a lot of work but we always
have a really fun time too. Thanks for your help.
Our ride today is to Carpenteria, a nice ride to the
coast. Your R.C.'s are - 1st group - Lead, Al Rubin and
sweeps are Frank McCollin and Manuel Omo. 2nd group
- Lead, Gene Garland and sweeps are Ken Gentry and
Ron Klein. There will be a pre-ride meeting at the stage
after the Chapter meeting. Just a note: V-Rod Rick loves
Carpenteria and always leads this ride but he and other
Chapter members are doing the 1000 mile Ride for the
Heart on May 3rd and 4th. Next months ride will be to the
Ronald Reagan Library, led by V-Rod Rick. Pass back
your hand signals and ride safe.
Remember, this is your Chapter - you make it what it is have fun with it - and enjoy.
May the good lord take a likin' to you

SAFETY OFFICER’S
NOTES
By Mona Lisa Garcia
By Leroy Coker
Regardless if your new to riding, or have been riding for
years safe riding starts before your bike moves an inch. A
good start at being a safe rider is reading the Chapter
Rider’s Guide located on the AVHOG web site under
“Ride Safety”. As long as you’re in reading mode,
familiarize yourself with the owner’s manual for your bike.
The owner’s manual has lots of important information you
need to know pertaining to your bike. Stopping distance,
tire pressure, tread wear to mention just a few. Learning
and memorizing hand signals is a responsibility that can
be accomplished off the bike. Hand signals can be found
in the Chapter Rider’s Guide and in the Chapter
Newsletter.
Before you even get on the motorcycle there are a few
things you should routinely check. A visual inspection
looking for oil leaks, tread wear, tire side wall condition,
engine oil level, tire pressure and verify that all lights and
the horn work. You may find something that requires a
quick fix or a major problem requiring a trip to the Harley
shop for service. If you have a windshield keeping it clean
will help reduce rider fatigue and obviously help you see
people. Similarly, keeping the head light lens clean helps
people see you.
Time to saddle up, but before you start the engine raise
the kickstand (aka: jiffy stand). Riding off with the
kickstand down will most surely create an accident that
can be quite costly if not fatal. Creating the habit of
raising the kickstand prior to starting the bike will prevent
just such an accident. Verifying that the transmission is in
neutral prior to starting is also a good habit to get into.
Dropping your bike is something that happens to
everyone. It can be just an embarrassing moment, or a
trip to the hospital with a crushed foot, broken leg or arm.
Surprisingly how often it happens when your merely
getting off the bike and find out you forgot to lower the
kickstand. Similar to starting the bike It is a good practice
that before you hit the kill switch you lower the kickstand.
Until next time be safe, and keep the rubber side
down.
Hi Everyone,
I would like to thank Chris and Cheryl for baking muffins
for our last chapter meeting. The LOH had there first bake
sale at bike night. I would like to thank all the lady’s that
baked items for the bake sale. Beverly, Cheryl, Danna,
Deanna and Lynne, thank you for all your help. It was a
big success! Our next LOH meeting will be on May 9, at
7:00 p.m. It will be at my house.
Congratulations to Mikey M., he was the birthday winner
for April, which you can see at the shop in the Historian’s
Memory books. (HOG# 1990799)

Good Morning,
I hope everybody that went to Arizona Bike week and
Laughlin River Run had a great time. Myself and a few
officers are working on creating a new look to the
newsletter. As you can see this month there are a couple
of changes. It will take sometime to get everything ironed
out, but hopefully in the end it will be a newsletter that you
will enjoy reading.
Also stop by the shop and see the newsletter in full color
in the books our Historian, Rick has created for us.
Happy Sunday!
Sorry I wasn’t here last meeting. We went to Arizona Bike
Week. Man was it great. The weather, the riding, the
people, all was the best! I will be bringing the Historians
Memory Book to the meeting so everyone has a chance
to see all the activities and rides we do each month. Also
at the shop, you can see this years and past years
Memory Book in the service department while you’re
waiting for your bike, or shopping. If anyone has never
been on our lunch/dinner rides, or other events held each
month, guaranteed if you see how much fun we have and
all the fellow chapter members and friends getting
together having a great time, you will surely want to join
in. It is almost summer now and the ridding is going to be
great. No, that it’s not already! Hope to see all of you in all
the activities to come.

HAND SIGNALS
By Leroy Coker
Riding formation is normally in a double file staggered zigzag with the lead road captain at the front of the left
column.
This is our default formation, and unless signaled otherwise will be our normal riding formation. Information
on riding formations, preparing for a chapter ride, individual responsibilities, safety, and other important topics
can be found in the Chapter’s rider’s Guide. The guide is located on the Chapter’s web site www.avhog.org,
and is well worth taking a look at. For information on access to the web site see Alan Bingham the Web
Master, and he will get you hooked up.
These are some of the more commonly seen hand signals you will
encounter while riding with the chapter. It is a good idea to
become familiar with them, and their meaning. Please, feel free to
ask any of the road captains if you have any questions on the use
of hand signals, and/or group riding. If you ride two up it’s a good
idea for your rider to know these signals too. While out riding they
may routinely be required to function as your copilot, and give the signals for you.
