Ross Orlando's Tahoe Spotlight
Hi Tahoe, lots of cool shows to check
out. Since 1959, Harrah's South Shore
Room brings in a variety of shows for
locals and tourist to enjoy. February 6th
is Tower of Power. From Oakland, Ca.,
tenor sax and vocalist Emilio Castillo
and baritone sax Stephen "Doc" Kupka,
have kept this 10 piece band together for
over 45 years and they both write most
of the songs that mix soul, funk, R&B, to
their powerful sound that is driven by the
horn section. TOP's horn section have
recorded with many greats over the years,
that included Elton John, Rod Stewart,
Santana, Journey, Aerosmith, Huey Lewis
and the News to name a few. They have
so many make you feel good songs--that
they mix in their set list. Favorites include
"What is Hip?", "Soul Vaccination", "So
Very Hard to Go", "Squib Cakes", "Down
to the Nightclub" and "You"re Still a Young
Man", to name some tasty sound treats.
They love their fans and tour year after
year. Emilio, their band leader, always
tells me how they really enjoy playing
Tahoe and doing it since the 1970's. See
them live, get a CD or 2, I always love
their music so much!
February 13th Grand Funk Railroad
brings their classic rock show to town.
With hits, "We"re an American Band",
"I"m Your Captain" (Closer to Home),
"Shinin On", "The Loco-Motion" and
"Some Kind of Wonderful". In 1971 they
sold out New York's Shea stadium faster
than the Beatles. Don Brewer on drums
and vocals, Mel Schacher on bass and
members from Kiss, 38 Special and
Bob Seger, will entertain you. They have
played their rock music all over the world,
sold millions of records and you"ll see a
rock "n" show.
March 4th Penn & Teller takes a
break from headlining in Las Vegas at The
Rio six nights a week since 2001, to come
to Harrah's. These amazing magicians
will entertain you with humor and comedy.
The WOW factor is huge! How did they do
that? Their shows are so much fun to see.
Since the late 1970's, they have been on
many TV shows, movies, won awards and
wrote books like, "Cruel Tricks for Dear
Friends", "How to Play With Your Food",
"How To Play In Traffic", to name some of
the many projects they do.
Peek Nightclub opens on Friday and
Saturday in the showroom. They have
go-go dancers, a variety of DJ"s each
week and on Fridays through February
26th, locals first drink is free and no cover
with giveaways all night. Center Stage on
Friday and Saturday is "Arty the Party"
with your favorite songs. Buddy Emmer's
Blues Band on Tuesday with guest
stars, is great to check out. Harveys has
Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo, with free
entertainment every night. The Improv
with host Howie Nave from KRLT 93,9,
has new comics each week and laughs
will come your way. Straw Hat Sports
Bar and Grille has around 25 TV's and
great food and drink specials.
Vinyl in Hard Rock Hotel and Casino
has february 19th Slaughter. Hard rock
metal music from the early 1990's with
hits, "Up All Night", "Spend My Life", and
"Fly to the Angels". From Las Vegas, Mark
Slaughter on lead vocals and rhythm
guitar, will crank it up Slaughter style
for you. On Saturdays they have tribute
bands so catch the music of The Rolling
Stones February 6th, Ozzy Osbourne
February 13th, Pink Floyd February 20th
and Smashing Pumpkins February 27th.
Tahoe favorite Lavish Green plays a
free show on Friday February 12th. Trey
Stone just played a free show there and
his Hendrix medley is so hot.
Lakeside Inn Casino has free live
music on Saturdays. Catch February
6th Mudd Bonz, February 13th Hare 'O
the Dawg, February 20th The Acoustic
Jimmy's, February 27th Taking Root.
They have great food and drink specials.
MontBleu has February 13th Jonny
Lang. This guitarist, singer and songwriter
mixes blues-rock and gospel. From Fargo,
North Dakota, he has 5 albums at Top 50
Billboards 200, grammy for "Turn Around"
and at 15 in 1997, his "Lie to Me" went
platinum. Lang has toured with the Rolling
Stones, Aerosmith, Buddy Guy, B.B. King,
Sting and in 1999 he played at the White
House for the President and Mrs. Clinton.
He also tours with the Experience Hendrix
group with many well known guitarists.
February 26-27 The Plastic Fauxno All
Star Band. The music of John Lennon.
Opal Ultra Lounge Thursday
-Saturday has go-go dancers, DJ music

Vertical Express for Can Do Multiple Sclerosis
Vertical Express for Can Do Multiple
Sclerosis, the only national event series
that combines skiing and fundraising to
empower people with MS, will hit the
slopes of Squaw Valley on February 27.
One of seven stops in a nationwide event
series, the Squaw Valley event supports
Can Do MS’s lifestyle empowerment
programs for people with MS and their
support partners.
“Vertical Express is driven by a core
belief that life is not over after a MS
diagnosis. Everyone has the power to
live fully with MS through active living,
increased self-awareness, acceptance,
understanding and support,” said
Jennifer Clark, director of marketing and
communications for Can Do MS. “The
event series invites anyone with a ‘can
do’ spirit to participate – from those living
with MS and their supporters, to those
who enjoy giving back and supporting
wellness and lifestyle activities.”
Vertical Express for Can Do MS
features on-mountain and après activities
for people of all ages and ability levels.
Individuals can register for only $25
at mscando.org/verticalexpress or call
1-888-Do-It-4-MS. While fundraising is
not required to participate in the event,
attendees are encouraged to raise funds
to earn VIP status, as well as a variety of
exciting prizes. Attendees who choose
to fundraise will receive a personal web
page that they can customize with their
own messages and photos to honor
loved ones touched by MS and inspire
others to support their participation.
In addition to the on-mountain
activities, an adaptive ski experience
at the Squaw Valley event will enable
10 people with MS and their support
partners to build self-esteem and
confidence, improve their fitness levels
and join their family and friends on the
slopes.
“Vertical Express for Can Do MS
provides an opportunity for anyone to
get on the slopes and support programs
that help people with MS be active,
regardless of their disability,” said
Haakon Lang-Ree, executive director
of Disabled Sports USA Far West.
“Everyone deserves to be active, feel

Over the course of its 31-year
history, the Vertical Express for Can Do
MS series has raised more than $11
million to support lifestyle empowerment
programs for people with MS and their
support partners.
Vertical Express supports Can Do
MS, a national nonprofit and innovative
provider of lifestyle empowerment
programs that help people living with
MS and their support partners. Because
Can Do MS offers free programs, the
more funds that are raised at this event,
the more people the nonprofit will be
able to serve. In 2016, Can Do MS aims
to increase its number of programs and
adaptive experiences for people living
with MS; this event series will make that
a reality.
Can Do MS honors the legacy and
beliefs of founder and Olympic ski racing
medalist Jimmie Heuga, a pioneer in
the MS care management field, who
was diagnosed with MS at the height
of his skiing career and later went on to
revolutionize the way MS is managed
today.
The Vertical Express for Can Do
MS series is supported by national
adaptive sponsor, Sanofi Genzyme;
national gold sponsors, Biogen and Teva
Neuroscience; national silver sponsors,
Chums and Fischer Sports; and
supporting sponsors, Grabber Warmers,
Hermitage Brewing, Plumbjack Squaw
Valley, Swany America, Vail Mountain
Coffee and Tea, and World Cup Supply.
About Can Do MS
A national nonprofit organization
based in Avon, Colo., Can Do MS
is an innovative provider of lifestyle
empowerment programs that empower
people with MS and their support
partners to transform and improve their
quality of life. For more information,
visit the organization’s website at www.
mscando.org or call 800-367-3101.
About Vertical Express for Can Do MS
Vertical Express for Can Do MS
began when Can Do MS founder
Jimmie Heuga organized the first Snow
Express for MS in Alyeska, AK. Original
participants included fellow world-class
skiers Jean Claude Killy, Phil and Steve
Mahre, Billy Kidd, Stein Eriksen and
Bernhard Russi, who together broke
records when they skied one million
vertical feet in 24 hours. This event
raised the seed money needed to start
Can Do MS and it continues to be an
important fundraiser for the organization.

More Winter, Great Events & Be Safe!
Hey Lake Tahoe Skiers & Riders!
Hope you’ve been enjoying the fruits
of Mother El Nino as winter is definitely
upon us at Lake Tahoe. Keep the faith
for more snow to continue the season
and freshen up the slopes, weekly.
All resorts around Big Blue are open
and the best news is 100% of their
terrain is open and accessible. Not only
steep runs but the tree skiing as well…
Something that we have missed or
have been limited for the past 4 years.
We got through the Holidays and
MLK weekend and coming up is the
all-important President’s week, so be
prepared as the saying goes, “If it
snows… They will come”. The Cash
Registers have been ringing at all the
Mountain Resorts, Lodging Properties,
Ski Shops, Restaurants, Grocery stores
as well as Gas Stations and this winter
looks promising for our tourism based
economy.
There are ton of great events
coming up in February, including Sierraat-Tahoe hosting a variety of South
Shore USASA events with Boarder
& Skier Cross as well as Slopestyle
offered on February 6 & 7, respectively;
followed up with Half-Pipe competition
on February 21. And, you don’t want
to miss the Sierra-at-Tahoe Huck Cup
February 25-28. This will be Sierra-atTahoe’s first ever event in Huckleberry
Canyon! This International Freeskiers
& Snowboarders Association (IFSA)/
Free World Qualifier (FWQ) event will
showcase top tier athletes from both
sides of the Atlantic and enables riders
to score points in the FWQ ranking
system to qualify for the Freeride World
Tour (FWT) and offers a $5000 Purse.
The best thing is that the event is
followed up with Live Music, daily with
the Rice Bro’s on Feb 27 & 28. For more
information or to register to compete,
go to sierraattahoe.com.
Coming up at Kirkwood on
February 27 & 28, is the kick-off to
the Rahlves’ Banzai Tour, promising
high-speed ski and snowboard racing
action. This event was created by
former Olympic ski racer and X-Games
Champion, Daron Rahlves, and is a
combination of big-mountain free ski
meets boarder cross race. The race
takes place in heats where racers face
off four at a time with the top two
finishers of each heat moving on to the
next round. The start of the Kirkwood
Banzai drops into the legendarily steep
section of the “The Wall” known as
All the Way, a double black diamond.
The Rahlves’ Banzai Tour sends the
competitors through moguls, over
natural jumps and into narrow gullies.
For more information and to register to
compete, please visit
Kirkwood.com
or
event website www.
rahlvesbanzai.com.
One other note
that we all have to
pay attention to is
“know before you go”
into the backcountry.
Along with all the
Mother El Nino
snow filled storms
comes the desire
to get first tracks in
POWDER… This is
what it is all about,
after all… There have
been several deaths
and missing people
reported around the
world as well as in our Sierra, including
human triggered avalanches with-in ski
area boundaries… Always ski or ride
with a buddy if you venture off-piste and
check the backcountry reports provided
by the Sierra Avalanche Center or enroll
in an Avalanche Awareness Class. For
more information visit their website at:
sierraavalanchecenter.org.
There’s plenty of ski & ride season
remaining into April and you want to
continue to enjoy this winter. Be Safe
and we’ll see you on the mountain!

Comedy From The Mountain
Ask and ye shall receive. Okay,
beg, pray have lots of snow parties
and an El Nino and ye shall receive.
Whatever it is it's a nice change of
scenery and obviously well overdue. It's
funny when comics who've never been
to Tahoe working out room ask me,
"Why is everybody talking about snow
so much?" I tell them if they hadn't had
any food in 3 days and feeling close to
death wouldn't food be on your mind
constantly?" Exactly. Last month we
celebrated our 15th anniversary up
here. Fifteen years! That's a long time
for up here and the longest place I've
ever lived at. So here's a virtual toast of
Jack Daniels to the next 15.
We have Darryl Lenox and Tracey
MacDonald on the same bill together
for the very first time. If there ever was
an outlet suited for each other this is it.
Starting with Darryl he was written up in
Stage time Magazine which named his
CD, Blind Ambition “one of the Top 5
Comedy Albums of 2012,” joining Louis
CK, Reggie Watts, Tig Notaro and the
late Patrice O’Neal. Along with his CD
release on Stand Up! Records Lenox
also saw the release of his hour-long
standup special of the same name on
the Starz Network. This marked the first
time that an original feature comedy
special has ever appeared on that
network. The inspiration for both his
CD and comedy special came to be in
part because of his visual impairment in
his left eye that lead to a very risky eye
surgery. He was not only grateful but
told me, “The doctor that performed the
surgery is my hero and was incredibly
inspiring.” Darryl’s experience not only
gave him a better appreciation for life
but also gave him plenty to talk about
for his stand up. He turned the entire
experience into an incredible piece
of comedy but also shared with the
audience that no matter what life has
to offer you, as an individual can turn it
into a positive outcome and in Darryl’s
case an extremely funny story on stage.
The last time Tracey MacDonald came
to Lake Tahoe she made it very cleat
that she was looking for a husband!
Yes! She wanted to trade her Canadian
citizen health care for a husband!
Oh my did we get offers when she
announced that on my morning radio
show! Tracey's from Nova Scotia but the
native Canadian makes no bones about
calling Tahoe her second, adopted
home even if only for one week. After
her first time she performed here Tracey
confessed, “I miss my home but Tahoe
is the next best thing and I’d like to bring
you a present from Nova Scotia the
next time I’m up there.” When Tracey
was in Canada she was already well
known making numerous television
appearances. Her debut in this country
was pretty impressive. After recording
unprecedented voter support on CBS’s
New Star Search with host Arsenio Hall
she not only won the finals, but she beat
out the winners from previous seasons.
Tracey was awarded a two year
Development Deal with CBS and the
grand prize of two hundred thousand
dollars! Variety Magazine did a very
nice piece on her after performing along
with comedians Sarah
Silverman, Bob Saget,
Dane Cook and Jay Mohr.
When not on the road so
much Tracey likes watching
the Lifetime Network and
movies living in Hollywood
with her plant. But alas, her
work visa keeps expiring
and she has to get letters
from people in the business
(myself included) on why
she should have her visa
extended. I think that's why
she's just willing to say,
"What the hell?" and just
find a good American male
that will be her husband.
So guys, she has standards but is
a blast to hang out with so be nice
because you don't wanna piss her
off trust me! Darryl and MacDonald
the week of February 10th through
the 14th.
Oh my to be a political humorist
in an election year wow! Coincidence
that we have political comic Will
Durst here? Uh, no! Those familiar
with Durst know that every Friday
morning on my radio show he has
the last word offering up some of
the best commentary (and rantings)
ever with 'A Burst of Durst.' The
5-time Emmy nominee and recipient
of 7 consecutive nominations for the
American Comedy Awards Stand Up
of the Year (and the first comic ever
invited to perform at Harvard’s Kennedy
School of Government) has a new oneman show entitled, “BoomeRaging:
From LSD to OMG” and it is hilarious.
His other one-man show, “The AllAmerican Sport of Bipartisan Bashing:
Common Sense Rantings from a
Raging Moderate” played Off-Broadway
and came with an accompanying book
that you can still order on Amazon.com.
He was also the first American to be
nominated for the prestigious Perrier
Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival
for his one man show “You Can’t Make
Stuff Up Like This.” By the way, a lot
of folks might be interested in knowing
that he ran for mayor of San Francisco
taking no PAC funding coming in 4th
out of 11. Durst spent a total of $1,200
getting 2% of the vote. And speaking of
San Francisco mayors Durst had a radio
show with former San Francisco Mayor
Willie Brown. The show was called, “Will
& Willie” and one of the funniest and
seriously entertaining programs ever.
Will Durst has an amazing list of
credits (too lengthy to list here) but
some highlights include The New York
Times calling Durst, “quite possibly
the best political satirist working in the
country today.” The Los Angeles Times
called him, “A modern day Will Rogers,”
The San Francisco Examiner stated
that he’s “the heir apparent to Mort Sahl
and Dick Gregory” while The Chicago
Tribune hailed Durst as a “hysterical
hybrid of Hunter Thompson and Charles
Osgood.” Good stuff. Durst is the author
of several books my personal favorite
being “Elect to Laugh! A Hilarious,
Common Sense Guide to American
Politics 2012 Election Edition” which
actually gave me a better insight into
the last elections that we had. Durst is
also 1/3 of the subject of a documentary
called, “3 Still Standing” which follows
Howie Nave
the career of three bay area comics:
Johnny Steele, Larry ‘Bubbles’ Brown
and Will Durst who started out in the
early 80s and what has become of
therm. Already the documentary has
found its way to Sundance, Tribeca and
Austin's SXSW film festivals. Brown is
an acquired taste and like Durst calls
San Francisco home and the two have
known each other for years so what a
perfect billing having the two of them
together up here.
‘Bubbles’ is what we call in the
business a ‘Comic’s comic’ which
means other comics laugh at his stuff
even if civilians don’t (well, right away).
He got his nickname, ‘Bubbles’ when
years ago he was sharing a hot tub with
comedian Paula Poundstone and she
commented that he was like bubbles
and well, it sort of stuck and we’ve been
calling him that ever since. He is so well
liked in the comedy world that big name
acts such as Dana Carvey and the late
Robin Williams would always use him
as their opening act. The first time I
worked with him was back in the late
90‘s when we were booked together in
Santa Rosa and I couldn’t believe how
down on himself he was. I think that’s
why the audience was laughing so
hard. He’s the same off stage as he is
on too! Larry was in “The Kite Runner”
and filmmaker Roger Nygard’s movie,
“Suckers.” He started out though doing
what he loves best and that’s always
been stand up comedy. He was part
of the famous San Francisco comedy
scene in the early 1980s and quickly
rose through the ranks as one of that
city’s most popular comics. Like Durst
and comedian Johnny Steele, ‘Bubbles’
is in the documentary called "3 Still
Standing" so what a treat having two
of its stars here this week. Durst and
'Bubbles' February 17th through the
21st.
Howie Nave is the host/emcee/
manager of The Improv @ Harveys
every Wednesday through Sunday.
Fly & Ice Fishing
It sure is refreshing to see water
back in our rivers, and it seems we
have plenty of it! Let's just hope it
sticks around in the form of snow
pack so we can see it being put to
use for our rivers later in the Summer
season. Our fish have taken a
beating for the last 4 years and those
that are left need what we are getting
(snow pack) in a big way. El Nino has
been the savior but at the same time
it can take it all away in a heartbeat if
it wants to, rain all the way up could
be the spoiler, kind of like the 1997
event over the New Year. Cross your
fingers and let's hope the snow sticks
up high.
Some of the better options for
Fly fishing right now are the Truckee
River amongst the section between
the Little Truckee inlet and the
Nevada state line. The water never
really went away in this section and
the fish seem to have survived quite
well. Numerous larger Browns are
still being caught and released with a
few quality Rainbows to boot. Look
for the longer slower pools and fish
with Midges, Baetis and possibly a
Streamer take on the warmer days.
The further into the canyon you get
the better your chances. Look for the
cloudy days for best results.
For those that can make it up to
the Little Truckee, the fishing should
be pretty darn good. The key is not
to get stuck on your way in or more
importantly on your way out as the
snow soften and the tires tend to
sink. Or take a snowmobile or ski
in on Cross Country skis, however
just be careful. Midges, Baetis and
the possibility of something on the
surface with either as well. The Boca
Inlet can be fun this time of year as
the river creates a hole in the ice
from the river flows. Swing some soft
hackle Baetis through the pool for a
bit of action on the warmer days.
Pyramid Lake has once again
been firing all through the Winter.
Right when you think it is going to
slow down you see pictures of another
beast caught with a Chironomid or a
Balance Leech. Look for the weather
days for best results but then again
there have been some fish being
taken on the calm days as well. Be
prepared for the cold, there is nothing
worse than getting there and not
being able to stay out on the water
because of not having the proper
gear. If you want to land a large
fish, bring large equipment like an 8
weight. No sense in fishing gear that
is too light and not being able to land
the fish of a lifetime!
This is also the time of year to be
on the ice fishing for trout. The ice
fishing has been pretty good so far
this season and should continue to
be safe into the month of March. Red
Lake and Caples Lake have been the
best with Caples being the big fish
option. Jigging will tend to give you
the best shot at catching the larger
fish, every year someone pulls a 15
pound plus Mackinaw out of Caples
and if you don't have your line in the
water your chances diminish rapidly.
Victor Babbit
Worms, Bay Shrimp and Salmon
Eggs tend to work best. Switch up
your bait if you are not getting hits,
every day is different and yo unever
know what the fish are going to like
day to day! The Dam areas are
easiest and probably best access.
For more information on these
fisheries or any others in our area,
stop by our shop and we will get you
set up with whatever it takes to get
you out on the water for a fun day
of fishing. We are located about 3.5
miles from the Casinos and about
1.5 miles from the Y at 2705 Lake
Tahoe Blvd. Or we can be reached
at 530-541-8208. We also offer fully
guided fishing trips on Lake Tahoe,
the Surrounding rivers and or on the
Ice! Thanks for reading, the fishing
never stops around here, get out and
fish!
