Something for Everyone at the Armonk Outdoor Art Show Here are some terms we thought would be helpful when purchasing your favorite artwork: Aquatint Process of dusting rosin or other acid-resists onto a metal plate. When placed in an acid bath, it will create a grainy effect that translates into areas of light and shade in the final print. Artist Proof Work is marked A/P to represent trial proofs that are the same as the edition. Contemporary Photography Art image can be created, using computer software, where the computer program creates the imagery. In addition, a photograph can be scanned and then altered or manipulated (color, shape, size). Drypoint Print created by using a sharp needle (e.g., diamond point) to directly incise a metal plate. Etching Print created by drawing with a steel point or needle on a metal plate that has been coated with a ground of acid-resist wax. The plate is immersed in an acid bath which etches the exposed lines. GiclÉe Printing Computer generated print, produced by the spraying of archival inks, that transfers an image onto fine art paper. Ink Jet Printing A printing process where ink is sprayed through nozzles onto a surface, guided by a computer program, to form an image. Intaglio Process of incising a plate, by etching or line engraving, for printing on a press. Limited Edition Number of prints made from a plate is limited to avoid compromising the image from continued impressions. Lithography Planographic process of making a print by drawing or painting with grease crayons and inks on stone or metal plates. Monotype Process of painting directly onto a plate (metal, glass, plastic) to create a unique edition of one print. Pixel Basic element that makes up a digital image. Thousands of pixels contain light data that is transferred into color. The color is measured by the bit depth of each pixel. Resolution Image quality of a digital file (or photograph), which is measured by the width and height of its pixels. Serigraphy (silkscreen) Method of printing based on stenciling. An impermeable stencil is attached to a fine mesh silk screen, stretched on a wood frame, so that the ink passes through the surface beneath (paper, plastic, fabric, wood) to create the image. Traditional Photography An image is printed from a negative or from a digital file; brightness and color shifts can be effected in darkroom work. Transfer Lithography Lithographs made by drawing with lithographic crayons on coated paper. The drawings are transferred to metal plates to make the prints. Working Proof Marked W/P to represent trial proofs that are different from the edition.
