PASTORAL COUNCIL NEWS
PASTORAL COUNCIL DISCERNMENT PROCESS
This past week, the final discernment process for the Parish
Pastoral Council was held. Through this evening of prayer and
reflection, those nominees who returned after the Information
Night listened to one another and finally, using a process of
consensus, chose from their own group, ones who they felt had
the gifts needed for membership on the Parish Pastoral Council.
The newly discerned members of the Parish Pastoral Council
were announced at the all masses this weekend. Thank you for
your consistent prayers during this discernment process. May
the Holy Spirit continue to guide our Parish Pastoral Council.

Psalm—I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me (Psalm 30).

(Luke 7:11-17).

ADULT: In what ways have you felt God’s compassion in your life?
CHILD: Do other people see God in what you do and how you act?
HOPE AND LIFE
Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah
stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope.
Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when
he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s second reading.
What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent.
We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a
life with the Good News.

UNDERSTANDING
In the readings from the Old Testament and the Gospel, a man is raised from the dead. In each case, a widow was the one left behind after the loss of her son. Without her son to support her and care for her, she has no status in society. In each case, Elijah and
then Jesus brought the son back to life and gave the widow hope. In both cases, a great need was fulfilled. The widow again has
status and has someone to care for and protect her. Elijah and Jesus both saw a need and took care of it.
FOLLOWING
We are called to show compassion as Jesus and Elijah did. They looked at the poor widow and knew that she was in need of the son
because of the society in which they lived. We don’t often look at the details. Do we see others in need and say someone else will
help? Do we think of ourselves as the helper? God calls all of us to pay attention to the details of our life and those around us. In
looking at the details, we will find ways to help and give others hope!
PRAYER
Compassionate God, thank you for visiting us through prophets like Elijah, preachers like Paul, and most of all through your Son,
Jesus Christ. Open out eyes to the needs of all, that you might continue to give life through us. Amen.
