It Only Looks Like Playing
As summer quickly approaches you will soon be faced with what to do with your children all day. One thing that you will want to do is to keep
the loss of learning from preschool and Head Start to a minimum. Having activities at home that can help your child continue to learn is a
great way to avoid learning loss, while reading to your child and visiting your local library will actually help to spur learning gain!
Unlike older children, preschool age children are unable to learn through abstract or passive methods. Young children learn best by direct
hands-on experience. They need to actively explore and manipulate materials and toys; discovering answers, properties, relationships, skills and
concepts for themselves. “ Play is the work of childhood”. It is a child’s very personal way of interacting with their world and learning to master
the possibilities in it. Having fun is much more than meets the eye; it’s the very serious endeavor of starting a life-long path of learning, and
having a little fun along the way!
Here are a few activities that look like play but it meets an academic goal:
• Block building - Mathematical goals (spatial concepts, problem solving, balance and weights, cooperation)
• Stringing beads - Mathematical goals (correspondence counting, patterns, sequencing); Literacy goals (visual motor coordination, left to right
concepts)
• Finger plays and rhymes - Literacy goals (auditory discrimination, phonetic skills, auditory memory, concept comprehension, visual motor
coordination, vocabulary development)
• Concentration game - Literacy goals (visual discrimination, symbolic decoding, visual memory, concept development; Mathematical goals
(matching and classification)
• Drawing and painting - Literacy goals (symbolic representation, visual memory, visual motor coordination, creative expression)

Every Tuesday, Romp n’ Roll roller skating rink offers
$5.00 admission into Tot Tuesday, a skate session
open just for children 9 and under and their parents.
Tiny Tots runs from 1pm – 3 pm and the $5.00
covers entry, roller skate rental, a slice of pizza and a
drink. If the supervising adult just wants to walk on
the rink next to the children, they don’t have to pay
admission. A slice of pizza and a soda will cost $2.00.
The Carnegie Library helps with job and career building
through classes and workshops? They assist with resume writing
as well! Here is one opportunity to hone your interview skills
and find out more!
Staff from the library will act as employers at a mock interview.
Teens will sign up for specific times the previous week and be
responsible for making it to the interview. Each interview will
have a brief follow-up evaluating their performance.
