A portion of our day was spent brainstorming and compiling a list of the many benefits of being a PPANE member which will be used for marketing purposes to grow and strengthen our organization. A condensed version of this list is included below and I’m sure after reading through it, you’ll be so impressed that you’ll ask yourself, “Why wouldn’t I want to a member of PPANE?” PPANE offers the BEST annual membership value at $150 and if you join by Dec. 31st you’ll receive an early bird discount of $25 OFF. Did you also know your entire membership fee will be applied towards your full week’s NEIPP tuition which essentially equates to a FREE Annual PPANE Membership!? CPP PPA Affiliate Juror “Leap and the net will appear.” John Burroughs Click for more info 4 “Exceptional Imaging without Exception” Click for more info 5 “Exceptional Imaging without Exception” PPANE Member Profile Mark O’Connell Norwell, Massachusetts WHAT FIRST MADE YOU INTERESTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY? My first recollection took me back to when I was about 13 and used to take snapshots with my Kodak Instamatic 100 cartridge camera. I had gotten a bad cartridge and sent it off to Kodak for them to replace it for me. When they sent back my fresh roll of film, and the developed prints from the cartridge I sent, they also included pamphlets describing books about taking better photos, and also developing and printing my own pictures. I saved up some money, went to the local camera store downtown and bought a couple of books on taking pictures, but I was more intrigued about developing and printing them so I found a Kodak book about it, and promptly set off to becoming a darkroom hermit. HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY CAREER? When I was a freshman in high school I strongly hinted to my parents that I wanted a twin lens reflex camera for Christmas, since a twin lens reflex was surely a sign of being a professional. Under the tree that year was a Yashica A . Rarely heard about, it was the entry level model which at the time (1969) sold for about $50. It came with a normal lens and no options to improve upon it’s design, but to me it was the best. Soon after I became involved in the school’s yearbook taking photographs of school events. Being on the staff let me use some of their equipment such as their Mamiya twin lens reflex and some extra lenses. With some classy equipment in hand I ventured out to find the most elusive prey of any teenage photographer, to meet and hopefully photograph girls. It was great icebreaker and helpful since I was incredibly shy. Fast forward a couple of years and as now a senior I became the editor of our yearbook. They were fun times! Being that I’m now a professional photographer I accepted my first paying gig, photographing my Aunt’s wedding. I think I had only attended a couple of family weddings with my parents, mostly because I knew they had cake, I still thought that I could pull it off. So I bought a book on photographing weddings and became a quick study of the process. I managed to get some fairly well exposed photos, and to my eye they were ever as good and other photographers under the age of 18. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT YOUR WORK? SPECIALTIES? ANYTHING YOU DON’T LIKE? I’ve always loved to photograph high school seniors more than anything else, and for quite a number of years it became about 85% of what I specialized in. Although early on I would take any work that came in the door I was always challenged with doing product photography so I guess that would be what I didn’t like to do. BUSINESS GOALS? PERSONAL GOALS? My business goal was to make enough money to support my family, send the kids to school, and put something away for retirement. I did two out of three successfully and will let you figure out which ones. continued on page 4 6 “Exceptional Imaging without Exception” continued from page 3 DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN STATE, REGIONAL OR NATIONAL PRINT COMPETITIONS? WHY OR WHY NOT? I’ve been on and off with entering competitions. I entered some and enjoyed doing them, then would just get busy and forget to get something ready for the deadlines. My spouse/partner Susan White is very active with competition so I just live through her successes. WHY DID YOU JOIN PPANE? I joined PPANE sometime around 1973 as it was the only place to get some real world knowledge. They had NEIPP which I had hoped to attend one day. Ended attending about 18 or 19 of them throughout my career. My experience at NEIPP helped me learn and grow as a professional. Plus they always had great deals at the large trade show. DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR OR SOMEONE WHO HAS HELPED OR INSPIRED YOU? There were many but I think I would have to say it was Joe Craig from Missouri. I first saw him at PPANE, and attended NEIPP twice just to attend his class, plus I attended two of his private classes at his studio. He gave me the direction and how he taught made it all “click” for me. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A BEGINNING PHOTOGRAPHER? Honestly, if it is for a full time career right now I would make sure you have a strong knowledge base both in the craft as well as some good business knowledge, and a good direction on how to market yourself. Because of the current saturation of untrained people taking a larger market share each year away from professionals, it would be a struggle to make a decent living right now. Having a second income or a partner that has another income would certainly be helpful so that you could grow your business to a healthy level. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING OUTSIDE OF PHOTOGRAPHY? I enjoy woodworking but have little time or space to do it. Susan and I are building a new home so in time should allow me to slow down a bit and do other things. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING IN YOUR CAREER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I really have no regrets. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS, PETS. Been married to my beautiful wife Susan White going on 10 years now. We met at NEIPP by the way! Have two sons, Michael, a entrepreneur cycling business owner, and Robert, a physicist who is employed by Seagate in Minnesota. Both are married and we have three grandchildren with a fourth on the way. Our pets include a tiger cat named Midas, and a Dachshund named Rosie. Both have graced the covers of our annual holiday cards to clients and family. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE US TO KNOW? Thanks for the opportunity to share a little about me. If you would like to send in a testimonial or comments about your experience, contact Candace at neippdirector@ppane.com. “As a new PPANE member, last April was my first experience as a NEIPP photography student. I was new, nervous, and sat in my car for about ½ hour (ok, maybe longer) before I got the courage to go into the Conference Center. I checked into my room, unpacked, played on the computer, rearranged the furniture…. Then I realized - I was going to have to face a crowd of “strangers”. Within minutes, I was encircled by a welcoming, warm group of photographers, sharing stories and enthusiastically discussing the upcoming NEIPP week. “The instructors are chosen from all over the country. A great learning opportunity for new and wellseasoned photographers. NEIPP provides a chance to study with the best! The instructors as well as fellow photography students are eager to teach and learn from each other. The enthusiasm is contagious. “The classes at NEIPP combined with the PPANE convention, print competition, lectures, and newsletters are only a percentage of the whole “picture”. The members, who come from all over New England, pull it all together. My membership has led to fantastic friendships with fellow photographers, an invaluable apprenticeship, and ongoing gatherings throughout the year. All things combined have all provided me the confidence and the courage to forge ahead in my photography business.” ~ Susan Schale, Beverly, MA 8 “Exceptional Imaging without Exception” NEIPP COURSE 2014 “Depth of the Spirit” Environmental, On Location and In-Home Portraits using Available Light and Off-Camera Flash, plus Marketing Your Business NEIPP 2014 WEEK LONG COURSE Darton Drake This is a program you will not want to miss! Darton is one of the premier speakers in the country. He has received Kodak and Fuji awards along with two Medallion awards, countless traveling loans, Epcot awards, was photographer of the year in Minnesota and Wisconsin ten times and the special award for his numerous national loan prints. Darton studied for five years in the fine arts at Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before he took up photography as his life’s goal. He has spoken in Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and across the United States for the last twenty years. This presentation will not only be inspirational and uplifting, but highly technical. His life stories in photography start with his first authentic job with Frank Scherschel (Life Magazine Photographer) in 1970. Darton says “if it’s about life, it’s about portraiture” and “a photo is what a person looks like, a portrait is who they are!” “It is a privilege to capture the spirit of another human being!” “ It’s not what is in your hand that makes the portrait, it’s what’s in your heart!” These are a few of the sayings that he lives by. After this program, you will leave with a new perspective, and your camera will await your attention. There will be slide shows of his images to enjoy. He will show his images and how he went from the original exposure to the final piece. He will explain his theories in the art of photography such as: how to create an honest rapport with his subjects. How to be patient before the magic moment of releasing the shutter. Darton uses one 4x6 soft box and a couple reflectors for all his portraits. He will do a lighting demonstration and produce an award winning image during the program. He will demonstrate his lighting techniques along with all the basics such as: standard modified short lighting, split lighting, broad lighting, Rembrandt lighting, and a few of his own personal techniques. continued on page 10 9 “Exceptional Imaging without Exception” continued from page 9 Also included will be thoughts on: composition, balance, perspective, lens choice, color harmony, textures, presentation, background choices, posing, camera angle, music affects, subject matter, and what judges like and will score high in competition. Darton talks fast and for long periods of time. He often has to be reminded to give the audience a break. His enthusiasm often consumes him! If anyone has to visit the restroom, go do your duty! There will be a five dollar charge that will go to Darton every time a cell phone rings. He hates them! If you have questions during the program either raise your hand or shout. He is more than happy to serve you. Anyone who is photographed by him during the program will receive all the images and a finished portrait on cd. When you leave this program you take with you something that will raise your imagery to the next level. You will benefit along with all your customers and the reputation of your studio! Enthusiasm, desire, and a new energy will will fill your camera room! Just enjoy and have fun! My mother is an artist & she took me to art shows & museums early on. I am one of six children and I was the only one interested in going to art shows or museums. I painted, sculpted, threw pottery & made stained glass windows & silver jewelry. I found that my passion was photography. I attended the University of Vermont where I earned a BS in Education, Public Health and Dental Hygiene; my camera was always with me in my knapsack. I did a study on body language for a Psychology class. I asked people different questions while I photographed their body language in response to the questions. I also had my first photography show during my four years at UVM. It was a show of my landscapes & botanicals set to music, which was considered very avant-garde at the time. I married Wayne Repeta secretly while he was at the US Naval Academy. I moved to Annapolis, MD and worked in Washington, DC as a hygienist and then with HEW on a Federal Grant setting up “trial” HMOs. We were eventually transferred to Pensacola, FL where Wayne flew jets and I taught 4th grade, eventually moving to Curriculum Coordinator for grades K-6. Our son Matthew was born in Pensacola. Wayne was again transferred and we moved to Virginia Beach, VA where I was like a single mother as Wayne was deployed for six to nine months at a time many times. He was home just over two months out of the first two years of our son’s life. Our daughter Sarah was born in VA. I completed Beauty For All Seasons training and became an Image Consultant during this time. When Wayne got out of the Navy and was hired by Northwest Airlines, we moved to MN. I continued with my Image Consulting business there. My business was called ‘New Hue.’ I had 10 employees. I also did a photography of the “befores & afters” of our male and female clients. I would use the images for my public speaking programs about clothing, wardrobe, color, make-up, accessories, etc. In addition, I offered presentations and fashion shows for the “spousal part” of large conventions. During this time I also became a Corporate instructor for Beauty For All Seasons. We decided to move back to New England and moved to Bedford, NH. I decided to take more photography courses and attended NHIA for several years. I also worked part-time as a pediatric dental hygienist until I quit my job to go on QVC for our Town (long story). After QVC, I decided that I was tired of “following my dream” and I decided to “live my dream!” 18 continued on page 19 “Exceptional Imaging without Exception” continued from page 18 I became a full time professional photographer. I sold my first Fine Art images the day after I hung them in what was then The Flower Cart Shop in Bedford. A few years later, I decided it was time to build a Studio. I have been a full-time professional photographer ever since. I love what I do every day. I am known as the “baby whisperer” in Bedford. I feel blessed to be able to share and capture so many special moments for my clients. Today, I have an established portrait studio in Bedford with my four part-time employees. I also offer Fine Art photography for businesses and homes as well as some Real Estate and Commercial photography. I joined NHPPA in 2006 and PPANE about a year later. I am currently on the Board for PPANE and NHPPA. I joined PPA in 2009. I have earned a Master Photographer degree. I have also earned Photographer of the Year Awards three times. I have earned Loan Prints, a Kodak Gallery Award and an Associate Colleague degree from NHPPA. I have attended NEIPP for the past few years and am registered to attend in 2014. I treasure the educational opportunities and friendships offered at NEIPP. I have also completed the PPA Judges Course and now enjoy judging throughout the US. In addition, I teach photography classes on how to take better pictures of your children courses & workshops on color, wardrobe, accessories, etc. Also, I took the Photography course for Law Enforcement taught by New Hampshire’s own Skip Foisy and Neal Scott. I have been the Department Photographer for the Bedford Fire Department since 2001. I also do photography for the Bedford Police Department and for the Town of Bedford as needed. My studio offers Bedford First Responders and active Military of Bedford free photo sessions. This is my way of giving back to my community. I feel that I make a living by what I earn. But, I make a life by what I give. Mark your calendar & dust off your imaging skills... Randy Kerr Texas photographer Randy Kerr’s photographs hang in 27 countries around the world and have been seen on ABC World News Tonight, NBC Today Show and the History Channel. In 1996 while digital photography was changing the face of how the masses take photographs, Randy decided to go another direction while digital gear was being perfected, changed his lifestyle and moving into a army tent in the Bastrop forest of Texas to study light for three years. He began interfacing with light by clearing 11 meadows that have a visual relationship with the earth, light and the lens of a camera. Randy’s unique form of teaching conveys simplicity and clarity to the sometimes confusing photographic terminologies. It is about how you walk into light and evaluate what is present. Randy’s focus is to educate film-makers and photographers on how to achieve quality light in image capture, while exposing meaningful humanitarian topics and the environmental necessity of green living.
