And while Paniyiri Greek Festival may be a long hungry week away, the heat has been well and truly turned up on the spit roast, with Brisbane restaurants paying tribute to the milestone event with Greek-inspired dishes and a special anniversary cookbook released for free download featuring some 32 recipes. Over four decades Paniyiri has grown to become Queensland’s signature celebration of all things Greek and the state’s largest cultural festival as well as the country’s longest running Greek festival – an admirable success story for the celebration that started in 1976 when a group of passionate Greek Australians wanted to share their cultural traditions with Brisbane. Fast forward to 2016 and this kaleidoscopic cultural explosion is now legendary with more than 60,000 expected to celebrate over the weekend of May 21 and 22. As famous for its cooking program as it is for eating, this year, upstairs at The Greek Club the festival features some of the Greek community’s most famous and loved cooks, including secret recipes from much loved Greek YiaYias (grandmothers). Joining the lineup this year include: Jocelyn Hancock – Brisbane’s first lady of cakes and the Eat Local movement, founder of the iconic Jocelyn’s Provisions in James Street and now Cake & Bake at West End. EFFIE – Australia’s Greek Princess, Effie will take part over both days of the Cooking Program. Lisa Peterson and Desi Carlos (Two Greek Girls) – authors of Mediterranean Eating: Cook | Eat | Live. Alice Vazanellis – author of Breaking Bread - a Greek Australian born in Wollongong and raised in Darwin and now a Brisbane local. Sia Aristidou and Chrystalla Tzaneros authors of Mezze Marina Campbell and the Asia Minor Greek Historical Society Incorporated – showcasing recipes from the Asia Minor region, common to many households the Hellenes grew up in. Paras Vasiliou and the Cypriot Youth of Brisbane –Showcasing 50 traditional Cypriot recipes and the notion that the kitchen is the centre of Greek households. In the 40 years of Paniyiri, almost two million festival goers have devoured over five million honey puffs, rivers of thick sweet coffees, over four million souvlaki, 25 tonnes of haloumi and countless calamari and dolmades. This year, more than 30 food stalls celebrate all the regions and flavours of Greece, while on the stages, there’s the Honeypuff Eating Competition, Grape Stomping, Olive Eating and Pasta Eating. I live in Kedron but always down load the messenger if we don’t drive up to Redcliffe on the Weekends. Here’s my problem, I have a sister who bad mouths everyone in the family including husbands and wives of our partners and the kids. Well you are not the first to have to deal with this kind of toxic family member, it is quite common. Given that there are all kinds of low self esteemed individuals and also all kinds of personality disorders in the general population it’s no real shock that many people have to deal with behaviours that negatively impact on immediate family, in laws and workplaces. Fractured Those who bad mouth may do so to gain leverage and get some sort of perceived power over others. Once a person is known to be a bad mouther or a gossip, others often respond in a fear based way. They may try to stay on the right side of the bad mouther so as not to become the next victim and this kind of power feeds the bad mouther’s power to do harm. They get a kick out of watching others squirm so to speak. Ironically, successful bad mouthers often do well in their careers because they have no sense of social justice and will think nothing of telling lies, manipulating circumstances and throwing others to the wolves. This sister is five years older family than me and we are both quite due to fat a bit younger than our older brothers. She will hook on to shaming any little comment and make a big thing about it and if there is nothing to hook on to she will In the same way that family and friends may enable drug use and addictive make crap up. She has called our eldest behavour to continue through the supply of money, accommodation and so on, I believe brothers wife (who is a real sweetheart) fat, that family and friends are also enabling toxic family interactions such as bad mouthing by unclean, uneducated and much more that I providing an audience to get upset by it. can even bring to mind at the moment. All of this crap about her and everyone else is The thing to remember is that bad mouthing can only continue in direct relationship to the absolutely untrue. refusal of others to do something about it. If your sister were held accountable for every nasty comment, aside and lie she perpetrates it is mostly likely that she would stop. For instance, your This has all flared up again because she brother has made a good start but rather than just telling your sister off, I would have liked to has put a post on the net about my little see him tell her that he won’t tolerate bullying and abuse, give her literature on cyber bullying niece calling her a “fatty” saying “she’s a and tell her that he has had legal advice as to how to best protect his child and this includes cute little fatty just like her fat mother” My removing the perpetrator (her) and the victims (his wife and his daughter) Being a blood brother reported her and told her off but I relative should have no sway in controlling toxic behaviours. Just like the old sand pit solution don’t think this is enough. I am now told of “remove the bully from the child or the child from the bully” just doesn’t engage with that she is organising Mum’s birthday and someone who would do you and others harm. This disengagement from family may prompt I just know that there is going to be another the perpetrator to seek help, take a good hard look at themselves and bring about change. My upset to come out of the family get together. advice is to never enable this kind of operator by giving them exposure to you and your loved ones... This is fracturing the family because I dread going to anything she at because I know If people remove themselves from your sister until such time as she gets help, acts respectful that any exposure just sets her off on one of and manages her bad mouthing than she will no doubt have to reconsider the way she operates. her bad mouthing rants again, often weeks If there is no one left to bad mouth what can she do? It’s only when people have reliable and after I have seen her. It’s like it takes time consistent consequences for these behaviours that they may learn that they just can’t get away for her to think about how to twist stuff with the slander and bullying anymore. Now you are probably thinking that you couldn’t around. It’s not uncommon for her to be get the others in your family to disengage with her and that’s Okay. The truth is that we can bad mouthing someone about something never control anyone but ourselves. Your focus should be on protecting yourself. Your family’s that happened (supposedly) at Easter the relationship with your sister is theirs to manage. Perhaps you could give a copy of this column following Christmas. I am so sick of people to your brothers and parents to let them know what you are doing so that they are clear that you telling me to just ignore her. are not trying to cause trouble but rather, you are no longer going to be a part of this toxic dance with your sister. The Messenger www.northlakesmessenger.com.au 11 Matrix Reimprinting Written by Marion Grimshaw, Bowen & EFT Therapist at Zen Chi Natural Therapies & Wellness Centre. Matrix Reimprinting, using EFT, is a method to clear adverse feelings, negative learnings and painful past events. Like its predecessor, EFT, which has a long and impressive history of resolving physical and emotional health issues, Matrix Reimprinitng also uses the meridian system that has been used in acupuncture for thousands of years. In Matrix Reimprinting we see past negative memories as being held as pictures or holograms in the body-field. Until they are transformed, you keep tuning into them on a subconscious level and they affect health, wellbeing and your point of attraction. Changing the pictures creates both physical and emotional healing, and enables you to attract more positive experiences into your life. And by tapping on the meridians of the body at the same time, the process is accelerated. Basically, we go into a past memory and clear the negative learnings by assisting the younger self (similar to inner child work.) By going back and actually helping your younger self through the negative event, in a new positive way, you CAN actually change the foundations of your reactions to the world in a more positive way. The “reimprinting” portion of MR, changes the mind’s, body’s, and spirit’s reference pictures, which allows you to respond to current challenges in a more positive way, rather than being held prisoner by past conditioning. Matrix Reimprinting can transform: • Addictions • Phobias • Allergies • Negative core-beliefs • Birth traumas • Relationship issues The Messenger www.northlakesmessenger.com.au 12 Murrumba seniors get tech savvy The next session is on May 18, starting at 2pm At Deception Bay Library, 9 Bayview Terrace, Deception Bay. Grotty Lake Eden I agree something desperately needs to be done to rectify the dilapidated state of the once beautiful Lake Eden. My husband & I walk our dogs around Lake Eden everyday & have been doing so for several years. To our dismay we have slowly watched birdlife & walkways slowly deteriorate to the point the wildlife can’t even swim in most parts of the lake now that it’s so overrun with weeds. Come on Moreton Bay Council surely with the influx of so many new people to the area you could afford to restore the lake to its original beauty. Also calling on all North Lakes residents to take a stand with council & insist that they do something urgently before there is no wildlife left to appreciate when walking the now sad looking lake. Concerned Resident. Redcliffe Shire? Don't people realise that Lake Eden & other waterways are of no interest to MBRC because they are not at Redcliffe. The river at Caboolture is weed infested and a detriment to the area. Julie Greer says she will work hard for division four. Please, please, please, do something for this part of MBRC we don't want to live in "Redcliffe Shire". North Lakes resident Dakabin Dump Dear Sir, When the Dakabin dump facility first started its operation as a waste facility, North Lakes was nothing more than a Pine Forest. Had the homework been done, people complaining about the smell emanating from this facility should have been aware that such a smell could be a problem when buying in their suburb. Yours truly, MH Gang of kids on Bounty Boulevard I never write in Letter to the editor, but I'm so fired up with concern for my family that others need to be aware of our recent car accident. We were driving home from a day visiting family north of the Sunshine Coast on the long weekend. This also served as an early Mother's Day visit to pay respects & put flowers on my Mother's grave. The trip home after tea was quite difficult as it was very foggy in those cooler regions & difficult to navigate through the never ending & sometimes unlit highway road upgrades. 8.30pm. We were nearly home . Then all of a sudden, we saw these rock boulders all across our lane - about a dozen in total, just a few metres in front of our car. There was no way to avoid them. They were deliberately put there. The location was the bridge across the Golf course on Bounty Boulevarde, about 200m from the busy roundabout of Satinay Parade & Discovery Drive. You have no idea the consequences of your act of stupidity, Sunday night 1/5/16. Firstly, it has been costly. We are deemed at fault because we 'hit' the rocks. It could have been a worse consequence if we swerved to avoid them, but there was no time to do that anyway. It has impacted on our insurance costs & we have untold damage to the car, apart from the two known popped tyres & cracked rim. And now it seems the insurance assessor will take another week before they can even look at it, not to mention the time needed for repairs. So we will probably need to hire a car. A very costly repair & hire charge! Secondly, it has been VERY inconvenient. Being my husbands work vehicle, it has meant driving him to & from work to our small business - dragging our 3 little kids out of bed in the early mornings & taking tired/ crabby kids to get Daddy late at night, after their usual bedtimes. He has been unable to do the necessary deliveries / errands through the day. A very stressful time for all the family! We were in shock & disbelief for several days that someone would think of doing such a selfish & senseless act. Now, we just have to get on with things ourselves & get it fixed. We know you hid in the bushes or under the bridge as we drove by. We know you picked the rocks up again after we drove slowly away. We know it was a gang of kids because we saw you all as we returned to the crime scene. I'm glad it was us in a way because if it had been the fast motorbike or the Bounty Boulevarde hoon, there could have been critical or fatal consequences. I wish it hadn't been the long weekend, because maybe you kids would have been at home readying for school the next day rather than roaming the streets. Hopefully this letter reaches other people so they can be aware of the 'rock bandits' so they don't have a similar accident. community@northlakesmessenger.com.au Kids, next time you are with your friends, please choose a safe activity for ALL those around you. It would be good if you could take responsibility for your actions, but I doubt cowards would even care. I hope that, after seeing our car damaged as we slowly drove down the road that night, you might start to be helpful to others rather hurtful toward others. Yet another of the many concerned residents The Messenger www.northlakesmessenger.com.au 18 PT's at Lake Eden Hi, my name is Dayl and I own and run Adrenalin Personal Training who was clearly targeted in the last issue of The Messenger. I’m writing in response to your letter. Firstly, thank you for highlighting your concerns. No one has approached me in person about any concerns regarding my business so it was good to read of them in our local publication so that I’m aware. I’d like to put your mind at ease with the following notes: My trainers and I hold a current council permit to run my sessions at the lake during the hours of 5.30am and 7.30pm Monday - Sunday in the open space known as Zone 3. Unfortunately Zone 3 is where Park Run lays out their start markers so rather than complaining and disrupting their whole system, I simply move my work area to Zone 2. If I was to enforce my Zone 3 permit tomorrow, it would cause havoc with their distance measuring. Its not as easy as just “moving their markers”. According to council, I am the only trainer at Lake Eden to hold a council permit so I am the only one adhering to their rules and regulations. I always adhere to all council/environmental regulations whilst running my business and have even had a few random visits from council rangers to be sure of this. Park Run is certainly not at risk due to my business. Like everyone, I love Park Run and what it offers to our community and while I’ve been running my sessions long before Park Run started, I work closely with open discussions to ensure we share the public space equally. Any issues that arise between us are certainly remedied quickly. I have been given approval to park my car on the footpath for 1-2 hours per day as it is deemed unsafe and unreasonable to carry my equipment across the busy road numerous times, sometimes in the dark, to set up my sessions. I have done this for four years and have not damaged the grass, the footpath nor the guttering and I do not impede traffic view across the roundabout. Hiring of surrounding school ovals is something I’ve looked into but as I’m sure you’ll appreciate, we run into public liability issues and the times I need to use the oval are the times the school is using it. I.e. 9am sessions during the week and weekend cricket, soccer and football etc. There are also issues with access to toilets. I’m not sure of who would want to picnic at the lake at 6.30am on a Saturday morning amongst 200+ runners however I am very friendly and approachable and if you’d like to set up a picnic blanket in the area, please come and ask as I certainly wouldn’t say no. I have young family of my own and would never decline a request for a family picnic. Please understand that I’m not out to “steal” rate payers public space, I’m simply running a small business which I’m very passionate about and love contributing to our communities health and fitness. I work closely with council almost on a weekly basis to keep the public and my clients happy so if anyone has any issues with sessions, PLEASE come and talk to me in person. Like I said, I’m very friendly and approachable and always love a chat! And while you’re there, come and enjoy a FREE first session with us :) We’d love to see you. Don’t be shy about thanking this person for being a stick in the mud. Cancer June 22-July 23: Careful. What looks like a shortcut could cut you short in the end. Someone’s betting on your dislike for being put out to pull a fast one. Leo July 24-Aug 23: If critics get under your skin, it’s only because they’re saying something you secretly believe. Better to reflect than to deflect. Virgo Aug 24-Sept 23: Is an acquaintance as clueless as all that? It’s hard to believe, but it looks like you may have assigned intelligence to someone who doesn’t warrant it. Libra Sept 24-Oct 23: Beware generous offers from rivals because you could sell yourself short. A competitor has a clearer idea of your worth than you do. Scorpio Oct 24-Nov 22: You used to storm off at the first sign of disagreement. Now patience results in genuine curiosity about other views. You’re mellowing. Sagittarius Nov 23-Dec 21: Don’t try to win back the disenchanted. You know this person is walking away from a good thing and one day they will too. Capricorn Dec 22-Jan 20: You don’t like stand offs, but you’re a pro at the waiting game. Keep the door open and go about your day. There will be a knock on it soon. From a favorite beach or park, to a local club or even your own home, if it’s a special place for you, we can make it happen. Whilst we have a beautiful chapel at our Deception Bay facility, it really is up to you to decide what is right for your family. Locations can include • Your home or garden • A special picnic spot or park • Rainforest • Beach or Jetty • Farm or forest • Scenic lookout • Sports or Services club • School Hall or sports field We did a service recently on the Shorncliffe jetty* for a gentleman who loved to fish there and his family thought it was the perfect spot to reflect upon his life while saying farewell. If you have somewhere special in mind why not give us a call so we can record it We also did a lovely funeral under a big fig for the future, then when the time comes tree on a farm near Caboolture. Apparently we can advise the family so you get exactly the lady married her farmer hubby there what you want. and all the family parties were held there. Her daughter said it was her place of *Approvals may be necessary for public spaces happiness and very appropriate. Did you know that more than 86% of Australians rate loss of sight as their number one health concern, and nearly two thirds of the population are more fearful of going blind than losing a limb or having a heart attack? Yet 4.1 million Australians have not had their eyes checked recently and one million have never had an eye exam. North Lakes Optometry is participating in the Open Your Eyes Preventative EyeCare campaign to highlight the dangers of not having a regular eye examination every two years and to encourage people to come in and have their eyes checked. The main reason someone visits an optometrist today is that they experience some kind of vision change. Unfortunately, many signs of eye disease are either silent or not immediately obvious, so it is really important that Australians of all ages not wait for a problem before seeing their optometrist. This should start pre-school and be repeated regularly thereafter. The "Open Your Eyes" campaign is urging you to take 45 minutes today that may just save your sight tomorrow. Forty five minutes is all it takes to undertake a “360 degree” comprehensive eye examination. This consultation is the main weapon against avoidable vision loss and blindness by picking up early signs of eye disease so it can be diagnosed and treated. The “360 degree” extensive eye examination may include advice on health, diet and lifestyle and the latest eyewear solutions for maintaining healthy eyes and vision. The HIA New Home Sales Report, a survey of Australia’s largest volume builders, recorded a relatively sharp decline of 5.3 per cent in February 2016, said the Housing Industry Association – the voice of Australia’s residential building industry. “This latest result is a larger than desirable fall,” said HIA Chief Economist, Dr Harley Dale. “HIA New Home Sales are losing some of their lustre as a downward trend becomes more firmly entrenched.” “While the monthly result is a soft one, there is no need to loudly ring alarm bells as often seems to automatically occur every time an economic update disappoints,” noted Harley Dale. “New home sales are down, but far from out. Over the three months to February 2016, the sale of detached houses increased by 1.8 per cent. The sale of multi-units nudged up by 0.8 per cent over the same period.” “Stage one of a down cycle in new home building will be moderate, but signs of a sharper contraction in subsequent stages may emerge as the year progresses.” “What we need to keep a watchful eye on are the signals that will shortly begin to emerge for 2016/17 from key leading housing indicators like new home sales and building approvals,” concluded Harley Dale. Seasonally adjusted detached house sales fell by 3.9 per cent in February 2016, while the sale of ‘multiunits’ dropped by a sharper 10.6 per cent. In the month of February 2016 detached house sales fell by 12.1 per cent in Queensland.
