Why Brittany is best for families
Brittany is a much-loved family holiday destination for many
reasons but one main factor has to be its beaches. As a peninsula,
Brittany has more than 1700 miles of coastline so expect hidden
coves, secluded bays, rock pools or mile upon mile of endless
golden sand... Not to mention tales of derring-do on the high seas,
swashbuckling pirates and entrepreneurial privateers. There is
plenty to fire kids’ imaginations but if this isn’t enough, kids’ clubs
provide entertainment on tap during the school holidays too.
The landscape of Brittany is naturally family friendly
from the sight of a lighthouse standing proud to a
huge castle straight from a storybook complete with
turrets, towers and a grisly history. Traffic-free walking
and cycle paths help you to make the most of the great
outdoors en famille while water-sports clubs and zipwire adventure parks are suitable for all ages.
Brittany’s heritage is preserved in fascinating and
high-tech ways: children will love exploring Brittany’s
sailing history at the wholly interactive Cité de la Voile in
Lorient – who wouldn’t want to take the wheel of a ship or
raise the main sail? Or perhaps visit an eco-museum that
transports kids back to days gone by whether it’s life on the
farm or at the forge.
There is family friendly accommodation to suit
all tastes and budgets from campsites to gîtes, by the
seaside, in a bustling little market town or away from it
all in the middle of the countryside. If en famille means

large-scale rentals available too.
Brittany is easily accessible from the UK too; load up the car with everything
you need and take the ferry from Portsmouth or Plymouth arriving at the delightful
ports of St-Malo or Roscoff. With toll-free roads throughout the region, getting around
is easy and free so there won’t be any cries of ‘are we nearly there yet?’ Alternatively, fly
from regional airports throughout the UK to Rennes, Dinard, Brest or nearby Nantes.

Keep teenagers entertained with a surfing lesson, a music festival or

to zoos, aquariums and water parks.

Every summer, seaside resorts around the coast of Brittany put on a whole
programme of events for kids completely free of charge. Known as the Festival Place

Make your own wooden toy
Computer games will be long forgotten as children enter the colourful, inspirational
workshop of Bois Ludik. Here, under Dominique’s expert eye, kids can craft a wooden
toy of their choice and let their imaginations run wild. There are courses for adults too
as interiors are also Dominique’s speciality…

Island hopping on board a traditional sailing ship
A boat ride around the Sept-Iles archipelago will get kids up close and personal with the
birds found on the island nature reserves (and seals too!) as well as let them experience
the thrill of sailing. The sea is the best vantage point for seeing the fantastical rock
formations along the Pink Granite Coast too – look out for Napoléon’s hat, a leaning

Where to stay
Choose the right place to stay and the fun doesn’t have to stop when the sun
goes down. Sleep up in the trees in a treehouse or even a bird’s nest, or commandeer
your own gypsy caravan, fisherman’s hut, floating bedroom or upturned boat...
