As most of our readers know
the annual Methodist Church
WMU Spring Luncheon will
be next Thursday, May 8. It is
an event most local folks look
very forward to. Some of us “old
timers” remember the Kenmair Class May breakfast that
was held for many years. It was
one of the biggest gatherings in
Holdenville.
We recently found an article
written by Charles Kemmerer
that was published in 1964 about
the event.

Nita Booker will meet you at
the door of the Methodist Church

Area seniors will soon be getting their diplomas and many of
them are already making preparations to attend college. Many
of those that will start college this fall will never finish and many
of those that do finish will have huge student loans to repay.
For many students there are other options that should be considered. My “pipelining” son had a much better salary than my
son with the college degree.
Sometimes I believe we have made our children feel like they
were a failure if they didn’t go to college. Nothing could be farther from the truth. There are a lot of graduates that should not
waste their time or money on college and there are many good
jobs that do not require a college degree.
Josh Mandel, the State Treasurer of Ohio, wrote a very interesting column recently that every senior should read . . . and
their parents.
In American high schools, it is becoming increasingly hard to
defend the vanishing of shop class from the curriculum. The trend
began in the 1970s, when it became conventional wisdom that a
four-year college degree was essential. As Forbes magazine reported in 2012, 90% of shop classes have been eliminated for
the Los Angeles unified school district’s 660,000 students. Yet a
2012 Bureau of Labor Statistics study shows that 48% of all college graduates are working in jobs that don’t require a four-year
degree.
Too many young people have four-year liberal-arts degrees, are
thousands of dollars in debt and find themselves serving coffee
at Starbucks or working part-time at the mall. Many of them
would have been better off with a two-year skilled-trade or technical education that provides the skills to secure a well-paying
job.
A good trade to consider: welding. I recently visited Pioneer
Pipe in the Utica and Marcellus shale area of Ohio and learned
that last year the company paid 60 of its welders more than
$150,000 and two of its welders over $200,000. The owner, Dave
Archer, said he has had to turn down orders because he can’t find
enough skilled welders.
According to the 2011 Skills Gap Survey by the Manufacturing Institute, about 600,000 manufacturing jobs are unfilled nationally because employers can’t find qualified workers. To help
produce a new generation of welders, pipe-fitters, electricians,
carpenters, machinists and other skilled tradesmen, high schools
should introduce students to the pleasure and pride they can take
in making and building things in shop class.
American employers are so yearning to motivate young people
to work in manufacturing and the skilled trades that many are willing to pay to train and recruit future laborers. CEO Karen Wright
of Ariel Corp. in Mount Vernon, Ohio, recently announced that
the manufacturer of gas compressors is donating $1 million to
the Knox County Career Center to update the center’s computerintegrated manufacturing equipment, so students can train on the
same machines used in Ariel’s operations.
In rural Minster, Ohio, near the Indiana border, electrician and
entrepreneur Jack Buschur is creating the Auglaize & Mercer
County Business Education Alliance, which will use private-sector dollars to fund a skilled-trade ambassador to walk the halls of
local high schools with the mission of recruiting teenagers into
these fields. This ambassador will also work to persuade school
guidance counselors and administrators to change their tune that
college is the only route to prosperity, and to encourage them
to inform their students about the many opportunities in skilled
trades.
At Humtown Products in Columbiana, Ohio, near the Pennsylvania border, CEO Mark Lamoncha is coordinating tours for local
high-school guidance counselors to visit his company so that they
can learn about job opportunities in advanced manufacturing and
3-D printing. Rather than having students seeing posters only for
Ohio State, Pitt, Harvard and Yale in their high-school hallways,
he wants to convince the schools’ guidance counselors to also post
signs for the Choffin Career & Technical Center in Youngstown
and the New Castle School of Trades in Pulaski, Pa.
The Ohio School Board Association recently heard a similar
message—from the actor John Ratzenberger, whom you might
remember as Cliff Clavin, the mailman from the 1980s sitcom
“Cheers.” Mr. Ratzenberger these days is devoting considerable
charitable time and dollars toward raising the profile of America’s
skilled laborers as role models for young people.
He began this effort in 2004 with a TV show called “Made
in America,” focusing attention on the rewarding labor of bluecollar workers making everything from Steinway pianos and
Wonder Bread to Caterpillar equipment and Chris Craft yachts.
Now he’s crisscrossing the country urging schools to invest in
vocational education. On “Cheers,” Cliff Clavin never appeared
to be overly industrious, but in promoting the restoration of shop
class in U.S. high schools, Mr. Ratzenberger is working hard to
put young Americans in good jobs. Educators could learn a thing
or two from him.

“College sense” and “Common sense” often have very little
in common. Pat Lehman shares the following story . .
Our friend Lisa, who was a student at Michigan Technology
University, had never learned to cook at home. We had been trying
to coach her, but one day she declined our offers of assistance and
headed into the kitchen to prepare dinner.
We heard the microwave running and decided she must have
figured that much out. Ten minutes later, we asked her what she
was cooking.
“Nothing so far,” she replied. “I’m letting the microwave
preheat.”
—CC—
I still remember when my close friend Charlie Hickerson
came by our dry cleaners many years ago to see me. My Dad
told Charlie that I had not returned from college yet.
Charlie jokingly said, “Do you think Bill will remember
everything he learns in college?”
My Dad quickly replied, “I sure hope not, somebody is going
to have to help me work!”
Ashley Olive Inducted Into
Honorary Commanders Program
Ashley Olivo, Business Development
Director, of St. Mary’s Regional Medical
Center, is one of nineteen civic and business leaders from Enid
inducted into the 71st
Flying Training Wing
Honorary Commanders program at Vance
Air Force Base. In its
14th year in Enid, the
Air Force program
matches specially selected members of
the community with
senior military commanders to serve a
one-year term. During
the event, the newest
members were introduced to their respective group and squadron commanders. “The
goal of the Honorary Commander program
is to partner with the local community and
our civilian colleagues with the hope of
providing additional insight into the various aspects of the Vance mission,” said
Col. Darren James.
Ashley was also recently honored as one
of Enid Young Professional’s “10 Under
40.” The event awards Enid’s finest young
professionals under the age of 40 based off
of nominations from the greater Enid community. The 10 recipients were chosen from
33 people who were
nominated. This was
the second year for the
awards. Lt. Gov. Todd
Lamb, an Enid native,
was guest speaker and
presented the awards.
Ashley is on the board
of several organizations, including the
Jayla Alexis Tuck
Cancer Foundation,
Hospice Circle of
Love, and United Way
of Enid and Northwest
Oklahoma. She is also
a member of the Junior Welfare League of Enid, and the Tour
de Trykes and Twilight Criterium Marketing
Chair for Enid Noon AMBUCS.
Ashley is a native of Holdenville and is
the daughter of Scott and Tonya Olivo. She
is the granddaughter of Charles and Marlene
Gann, Lamar, and Alice and the late Marvin
Olivo, Holdenville.

History of Wewoka Switch
In the late 1880’s and early in
1890’s the Oklahoma, Choctaw
and Gulf Railroad laid their first
area siding, or switching point,
in Wewoka, at that time a good
size trading post and settlement.
Merchants, traders and businessmen for a radius of some
25 to 35 miles ordered their
goods and supplies shipped via
railroad to the nearest siding. In
this area, the Wewoka Switch.
They then drove in wagons to
accept delivery of these items.
In the early 1920’s oil was
discovered southeast of Wewoka and virtually overnight
this small city became a teeming, busy, crowded oil field
supplies, parts, pipe casing,
drilling rigs and other oil field
equipment flooded this local
siding. Adding to this confu-
sion every merchant;s stock
order were doubled, tripled and
quadrupled to meet the needs of
the local residents. The population jumped from 2,500 to over
12,000 in a few short months.
Lost freight bills, inadequate
telephone service, small railroader facilities, and other factors added to this congestion.
Everyone was rushed, pushed
and confused. Thousands of
freight shipments designated
elsewhere, thought to be lost in
transit, were found hidden in the
the Wewoka Switch., Upon being questioned about late or unreceived orders, the merchants
standard reply (and excuse)
was, ‘Yes, I have it but it’s in
the Wewoka Switch, meaning,
of course, that they had been
unable for some reason, to pick
up the delivery and were caught
in a tight spot.
So common became this situation that Rock Island Railroad
Company adopted a policy of
searching for all lost in transit merchandise on the Wewoka
Switch before searching elsewhere. They prepared a rubber
stamp stating Search Wewoka
Switch, for all lost shipments.
The expression, ‘I’m caught
in the Wewoka Switch,” grew
to mean and imply that one suddenly found himself in a bind, a
trying,dangerous situation. The
expression became standard
with oil field workers and promoters alike.
In later years, these oil men,
drillers, roughnecks and workers, moving on to bigger and
newer oil discoveries, carried
the expression, ‘I’m caught in
the Wewoka Switch’, to all parts
of the world , where its use became universal.

ROSS, HARVE CODY, (pastors) LUCILLE CHILCOATE,
WILMA BASS, LENA PLATT,
MINNIE NIX and many others
have done much for KENMAIR.
The name and enthusiasm continues. Not mentioned above is
MRS. ECHO BILLINGSLEY,
teacher, on sick leave, but always, as the class adjourns on
Sunday mornings, ECHO is
remembered when the class
repeats: “The Lord watch between thee and me, while we
are absent, one from the other.”
Game
Night
News
And then, there were five. The Yeager girls said that
“Sugar melts” and of course, it
was raining. But 5 brave souls
came out to play “Moon”
domonioes. Loita Sharp and Shirley
Hardwick played against Naomi Tomlinson and Sharon Dilday. Naomi and Sharon won
3 games. Lynn Marquis kept
score. Shirley decided that
she wasn’t doing any good,
so she and Lynn switched. Lynn and Loita won a game! Yea!! Naomi shot the moon
and went down. Sharon shot
the moon and got them out
of the circle, shot it again
and won the game! Loita and
Lynn just sat there with their
mouths open! What happen?! Way to go Sharon! They
won 2 more games making
a total of 5 games altogether. Did you know that if you are
having an asthma attach that a
little bit of sugar will help you
breath better and that if you
are having indigestion, try a
little pickle juice or vinegar. And you thought that we just
played domonioes!
No one brought refreshments! No wonder I lost my
mo-jo!!!
Come and join us next
week for a fun time! You will
have a good time, I promise!
See ya then!
