Prattville & Autauga County, AL
A quick, comprehensive overview of what’s great about the community
Southern hospitality combined
with an unexpected, charming
New England aesthetic, many
recreational activities, and a
strong, growing economy are just
a few reasons to make Prattville
and Autauga County home.
Quaint Living,
City Conveniences
Prattville fuses the beauty
of nature with proximity to the
Montgomery metro area. It’s a
tightly-knit community combining
rich history with forward vision –
all qualities that help the city
maintain its charm despite
being ranked as one of the
fastest-growing areas in the
state of Alabama. Modern
upscale neighborhoods and
national retailers meet classic
older homes spreading out from
a historic downtown dotted with
spring-fed artesian fountains.
pro-business community
with industrial roots
It’s no wonder Prattville is such
a pro-business community now,
considering its industrial roots.
Unlike most larger communities
in the South, the city developed
with industry at its geographical
center, similar to many New
England towns, and you will
see that area’s architectural
influences as well.
Located on Autauga Creek,
Prattville was destined to become
the “Birthplace of Industry in
Alabama” when Daniel Pratt
selected the site to establish his
cotton gin manufacturing company
in 1833 – a company that went on
to become the leading cotton gin
producer in the world. Pratt was
a New Hampshire native who
grew up familiar with the industrial
villages of New England, so when
the architect-builder settled here
to create an industrial village
around his plant, he modeled the
homes after those back home.

Kids love Pratt Park, voted “America’s Favorite Park.”
Public schools consistently yield high test scores.
fter living throughout the U.S. and in the Caribbean, Joe
Mathis moved his family to Prattville in 1985 when he was
in the Air Force. When Mathis retired in 1990, he asked his
wife, daughter and son where they would like to live.
“They all said, ‘We want to stay in Prattville,’”
says Mathis. “From the time we arrived here,
Prattville reached out and grabbed us, and we
knew it was home. It’s the most caring place
we’ve ever lived.”
Living in Prattville, which has a citywide
population of 33,000, gives residents all the
benefits of a small, historic city while also being
close to Montgomery and Birmingham, which
offer big-city amenities, including airports with
commercial flights. Other benefits of Prattville
and Autauga County’s location are a three-hour
drive to the beach and a less than two-hour drive
to Alabama’s main university campuses at
Tuscaloosa and Auburn – handy for education
and a perk during college football season.
Autauga County amenities include the
Capitol Hill Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail,
the Marriott Legends Conference Center and
Grouby Field Airport.
“Prattville still has a small-town feel, but
now we have the amenities we didn’t have when
I was growing up here,” says Patty VanderWal,
Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce president.
Progress and Preservation
Go Hand in Hand
Daniel Pratt, Alabama’s first major
industrialist, began building cotton gins here
in 1833, and created the New England-style town
of Prattville, now often called the “birthplace of
industry.” Through the decades other industries,
such as International Paper Company, have
discovered Autauga County. Smaller businesses
have located here, too, and downtown Prattville
maintains a vibrant mix of offices and shops.
Plans are now under way to revitalize the historic
cotton gin factory complex, which could be
converted for modern residential use.
“We’re looking toward a bright future while
embracing our rich history,” VanderWal says.
High-Performing School System
There are 13 schools in the high-performing
Autauga County School System. VanderWal says
the school system’s test scores are high and its
graduation rate is “exceptional.” In 2014 Prattville
High School’s Lions football team went to the
state championships.
Brian Davis moved with his wife and three
children to Prattville in 2008, and commutes about
20 minutes to his job at Alagasco in Montgomery.
“The main attraction for us was the
public school system,” he says. “Since moving
here, we have enjoyed many aspects of the
area and really feel connected to the familyfriendly community.”
nice weather, convenient location
VanderWal says many features attract people
and businesses to Autauga County, including the
climate – the average temperature of Prattville is
63 degrees.
With its pivotal location on Interstate 65, local
leaders are working to introduce their community
to travelers, including the “snowbird” population
that spends winters on the coast. The key,
VanderWal says, is to get visitors to stay the night
and experience the quaintness of the town, and
visit its shops and attractions such as Prattaugan
Museum, the Creekwalk and the Autauga Creek
Canoe Trail and Wilderness Park with its 60-foottall bamboo trees. Annual events such as the
Prattville CityFest and Fourth of July celebrations
attract residents and visitors alike.
Years ago, Prattville was called a ‘Preferred
Community,’ “and the name stuck because
people like to come here,” Mathis says.

Performing Arts
staging successes
Way Off Broadway Theatre, located on West Fourth Street,
offers shows, acting lessons and special events. Founded in 2002 as
part of the Prattville Creative and Performing Arts Council, the theater

musical theater. The Prattville Community Chorus and Prattville Pops
also help keep residents entertained with concerts throughout the year.
Dance
twirl around or tap your toes
The Prattville area offers three great places for dance instruction,
and student performances are always a hit. For more than 64 years,
Mann Dance Studio has offered dance and gymnastics classes such
as jazz, ballet, and leaps and turns. Ranked among the top 150 U.S.
dance studios, the Centre for Performing Arts offers dance styles
such as lyrical, hip hop, creative movement, ballet and tap. Another
favorite, C.J.’s Dance Factory, focuses on ballet, jazz, tap and tumbling.

Recreational amenities like parks, pools, gyms and athletic programs help residents stay active
throughout the year. Here’s a look at some of Prattville’s most popular facilities and activities.
Fishing & Hunting
City Parks
outdoors enthusiasts, welcome to paradise
playgrounds & Ball fields
Looking for somewhere to use that gear purchased at the Bass Pro
Shops Outdoor World store in Prattville? You’ll find dozens of creeks,
streams, ponds and lakes all within a short drive. The Alabama River,
a prime waterway, lies just to the south. One of the most popular
places to play is Cooters Pond Park, located right on the river. Featuring
two boat ramps and docks, a river walk, basketball court, dog park and
open green spaces, the park offers families an enjoyable day on land or
water. Bear Creek Hunting Preserve offers sportsmen the opportunity
to hunt trophy whitetail, quail, dove and wild turkey. Both individual
hunters and groups are welcome.
The park system in Prattville
consists of nearly 20 city parks.
Families with small children can
take advantage of the playgrounds
at Spring Hill, Kiwanis, North
Highland, Easy Street and Pratt
parks. Baseball, softball and soccer
fields can be found at many of the
parks, including Spinners, Bell,
Upper Kingston, Mac Gray and
Newton parks. To see a complete
list of parks, visit the City of Prattville
online at www.prattvilleal.gov.
Canoeing

Grab an oar and float or paddle down the 13-mile-long Autauga
Creek Canoe Trail. The trail carries canoeists through shaded areas full
of trees, plants and wildlife. The most popular route is a 4-mile trip that
begins at the dam and ends at the Canoe Trail Park. Several springs,
known as artesian wells, feed into the creek, and the last 2 miles run
from Canoe Trail Park to the Alabama River. Take caution, though:
There is no road access, so if you head toward the river, be ready
to paddle back upstream.
Golf
Golf
Golfers around the nation know
Prattville for its great golf, largely
because of the high profile Robert
Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capitol Hill
(see page 22). Many locals also love
playing rounds at Prattville Country
Club‘s regulation length 18-hole
course, with 6,413 yards of golf
measuring a par 71, and terrain that
challenges golfers with hills and flat
areas. The club’s many amenities
include an Olympic-size pool with
slides, a cabana, locker rooms, and
golf and pro shop. Established in
1965, the country club also features
a restaurant offering hand-cut
steaks, fresh fish, fine wines and
a banquet area.
Wilderness Park
One of the most distinctive parks in the region is the Wilderness
Park, which features giant oriental bamboo that lines a short walking
trail and shoots up more than 60 feet in the air. The park, established
in 1982, was the first of its kind to open within a city in the U.S.

YMCA builds community,

T
he Prattville YMCA started in 1963 thanks
to 25 citizens who pushed for its existence.
Now in 2015, 8,500 members and another
2,500 program participants use the hometown

Setting the Pace
The Prattville YMCA
employs about 300 parttime workers each summer,
a practice that gives many
local young people their
first job experiences.
“The Prattville YMCA has
helped raise thousands of area
children through sports activities,
daycare services and after-school
care,” says David Lewis, Prattville
YMCA director and CEO. “I’ve
lived in Prattville almost 20 years,
and my kids have been lifelong
participants at the Prattville Y.”
Lewis is only the second
director in the Prattville Y’s
history, following Willis Bradford,
who retired in 2012 after 49 years
of service. There are currently
30 full-time employees and
300 part-timers who help at
summer day camps and four
swimming pools, and serve as
assistant sports coaches and class
leaders. The payroll at Prattville
YMCA is about $2 million annually.
“Many of the part-timers are
young people, and often the Y is
their first job,” Lewis says. “We
give them work experience and
teach them assets like promptness
and integrity. It’s nice to impact
young people in their first job, and
they help us strive to be the leading
proponent of health and wellness
in Prattville and Autauga County.”
YMCA Makes
Lifelong Impact
One of those young people who
got her first job at the Prattville
YMCA is Hayden Nichols, a senior
at Prattville Christian Academy.
Her first experience with the Y
was actually back in first grade
when she enrolled in gymnastics,
and Nichols remained in
gymnastics until 10th grade.
“When I decided to stop, my
coach offered me a job so I could
continue to stay in this environment
to help coach gymnastics,” Nichols
says. “But I was also a cheerleader
at my high school, so when
basketball season began, I couldn’t
devote enough attention to the job
at the Y. I couldn’t coach anymore.”
However, the Y staff was so
impressed with Nichols that they
offered her a part-time front desk
position, where she currently
works Mondays, Wednesdays
and Saturdays for about 16
hours a week.
“Almost all of my friends have
been involved in the Y, whether
it’s swimming in the summer
or playing sports or working
at their first job,” Nichols says.
“The Prattville Y helps grow
the community together.”
Building Future
Business Leaders
A successful Prattville
businessman who spent much time
at the Y growing up is Bob Gipson,
co-owner of Gipson’s Tire Pros. He
credits the Y with helping young
people learn social interaction and
team-building skills.
“I was always involved in
sports as a kid because my parents
were big on keeping me active, so I
visited the Y all the time,” he says.
“I believe successful communities
usually have a successful YMCA.”
As in the case of Nichols,
Gipson says if teenage employees
show aptitude, the YMCA staff
will let them work with younger
kids in sports.
“I worked part-time at the Y as
a lifeguard, at day camps and in
coaching all the way into college,”
he says. “I had some buddies who
came from broken homes growing
up, and they turned out great in
large part because of them keeping
busy at the Prattville YMCA.”

Blending charm with proximity, the region’s air-transportation options
include Prattville’s Grouby Field, which has a 5,400-foot general aviation

by Interstate 65, which runs along the eastern edge of Prattville and
extends from the Gulf Coast to just southeast of Chicago.
Retail Variety
Prattville has attracted major national retailers while nurturing

spacious and well-equipped haven for sportsmen (and women) of all

is coming into its own as a live-workplay location. According to the 2010
Census, Prattville ranks second
among the 20 most populous cities
in Alabama for population growth—
almost 40 percent over the past
decade-plus.
Although many residents still
find professional employment
across the river, opportunities
abound in the vibrant local
community. These include
International Paper Co., one of
Prattville and Autauga County’s
largest employers, which creates
industrial and consumer packaging
products and high-quality paper
for several brands. The company’s
Prattville facility employs about
600 workers. Commonly known
as the Riverdale Mill, it produces
boxboard, a firm cardboard used
for boxes.
Tenaska, one of the biggest
U.S. energy-generation companies,
operates power stations in the
Autauga County town of Billingsley.
And Medline Industries, the nation’s
largest privately held manufacturer
and distributor of medical supplies,
opened a 350,000-square-foot,
state-of-the-art distribution facility
in Prattville in 2011 to supply hospitals,
nursing homes, surgery centers and
home-care agencies throughout
Alabama and northwest Florida.
On the military front, Maxwell
Air Force Base, which employs
about 15,000 active duty and
civilian workers, is approximately
13 miles from Prattville.

LIVING
Education
Strong schools inspire homeowners to spend locally, attract new residents, lure companies
dependent on a skilled workforce, and in many cases, enhance a town’s entertainment scene.
Here’s an overview of the quality schools impacting Prattville far beyond the classroom.
Private Schools
Faith-based academies
Families who prefer a private
Christian education can choose from
East Memorial Christian Academy,
Prattville Christian Academy or
Autauga Academy. East Memorial
educates approximately 300 students
and provides “an academically
challenging education in a Christian
culture.” Prattville Christian is an
independent school that aims to
“glorify God by inspiring qualified
students to excel academically,
physically and spiritually.” Autauga
Academy, founded in 1969, offers a
college preparatory curriculum in a
family environment that embodies
Christian values.
Higher Education
Auburn Montgomery
& Troy university
at Montgomery
Auburn Montgomery (AUM),
a branch campus of Auburn
University located about 20 miles
southeast of Prattville, enrolls
approximately 5,000 students.
Established in 1967, AUM features
a business school and nursing
school, plus programs in science,
education and the liberal arts. An
additional 10,000 students take
non-credit classes through AUM’s
Center for Lifelong Learning.
Troy University at Montgomery
is the public university’s downtown
Montgomery campus that offers
29 degree programs to nontraditional
adult students, most of whom are
working adults. To help accommodate
these students, the university offers
many evening, weekend, TV,
online and blended classes.

services, cosmetology, engineering, automotive technology,
and network systems and computer services.
Public Schools
Autauga County School System
Autauga County’s school district is made up of 13 public schools and
serves approximately 10,000 students from kindergarten through grade

Chamber Report
Developing Situation
chamber hires Dr. Amy Brabham to lead economic development efforts
The Prattville Area Chamber
of Commerce promotes economic
development, but was without an
economic development director
for the last couple of years. Now,
it has a good one.
On June 1, 2014, Dr. Amy
Brabham became the chamber’s
economic development director
in charge of helping to grow
existing business and industry
as well as attracting new
companies. Brabham previously
worked as vice chancellor for
the Alabama Community College
System, supervising workforce
and career development along
with technical education.
“Business development and
business retention is my current
focus - to attract more high-tech,
industrial, high-payroll jobs to
Prattville and Autauga County,”
Brabham says. “We want more
white-collar jobs where we live,
instead of white-collar jobs
migrating to other cities.”
Patty VanderWal, president
of the Prattville Area Chamber,
says the time is right to advance
the community’s economic
development initiative.
“We have three industrial parks
in Prattville and one in Autauga
County that all have available land,
including a 400-acre Prattville South
Industrial Park near I-65 where a
new road, more signage and a bridge
will be built to improve truck traffic
for future manufacturers,” Brabham
says. “That park also has dual rail for
companies needing to move freight.”
Brabham emphasized the area’s
transportation assets, including
its proximity to the Interstate
65/I-85 intersection, its general
aviation airport, Prattville-Grouby
Field,and its convenience to
commercial flights via Montgomery
Regional Airport.
“We are targeting manufacturing
sectors such as the automotive
industry because Prattville is
only 15 minutes from an existing
Hyundai auto plant, and we also
want to attract companies involved
with aerospace, information
technology and energy,” Brabham
says. “In addition, our graduation
rates and ACT scores in Autauga
County are greater than many of
our neighbors, so we are touting a
high-level workforce capacity here.”
Brabham adds that PrattvilleAutauga County has a progressive
business climate and strong support
from local government.
“There is also a large military
and military retiree presence that
gives our region expertise in IT
and other areas,” she says. “And
last but not least, residents of
Prattville-Autauga County
enjoy a nice quality of life.”
