Introduction Since we are kids, we (Floriane 24, and Romain 26) are avid of travels. That’s why, together we had a good mind to participate in a long and amazing trip. First it was only like a dream but in 2009 after an 8-month-stay in Australia, the idea of travelling around the world with an ambitious target became true. Like an “intelligent WorldTravel” which can permits us to fulfill our passion for adventure and to share our experience with other people over the globe. As you will read it in the next few pages, we decided to focus our goal and aim on pupils. After getting our Master degrees (2010 for Romain and 2011 for Floriane) we focused on this big project and we decided to dare us to do it. This trip with an estimated period of 18 months will bring us over the five continents: Africa, Asia, Oceania, South, Central and North America, then back to Europe. Our major project will be axed on the 7th principle of the DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD proclaimed in 1959 which gives all children the right of having recreation. (See Chapter 3.1 for more details). Beside this guiding idea throughout our journey, it will also be a great opportunity for us to discover the treasures hiding by the earth, the nature and the People and of course the chance to understand new cultures. We really want to go to meet the local population and to have mutual exchange. It is a unique chance to discover habits and customs that we, as Westerners, We don’t know…And it is also a sign of respect, which is essential for us. Before presenting this project more in details, we would like to ensure you that this idea is not madness, you’ll find a small presentation about us and of course about the project. It is a long term deployment with a full preparation, a real engagement and a lot of motivation. For 2 years now we have been saving money, going to meet different stakeholders (Schools, Companies, Associations…), looking for information, help and advice. We hope that through these few pages, we will catch up our interest and that you’ll have a positive mind on the project. Floriane Lamy – passionate traveler Born in Lorraine (East of France), my studies and my work lead me to travel and meet children. In 2003 when I was 15, I went 3 weeks to Mali with a humanitarian association. Objectives were to help a school. At this moment, I understood why Education right is something very important that is not always respected… When I was 15, I went 6 months in Germany for a student exchange. In 2006 I got my A level and went to Lille (North of France) for studying in Centrale (Engineer School). My internships gave me the possibility to go abroad: Germany 3 months and Australia 8 months. With a student humanitarian association we went in 2007 1 month to Burkina Faso in Africa to build an irrigation system. In 2011 I got my Master and was VIE (International Volunteer in a Company) in Switzerland. From December 2012 I am a full time employee of this company. In 2009 and 2010 I was camp counselor for teenagers between 12 and 17. Apart from my travels and my activity with teenies, I was President of a Student Association. Through this experience I learnt how to manage people, organize a project from A to Z, argue to obtain sponsors… Sport is also a part of my timetable. It’s important to feel fit. In competition I do archery (I achieved 7th in the French championship 2003); Just for fun I also swim, play bowling, do fitness, canyoning…and sky diving ☺ I’m open-minded; I like changes, diversity, and discovering new things. I proved many times to those around that I have a strong personality, I am very determined; if I start something I can achieve it. This new challenge is also exactly what I need. I believe in it and I hope that you will give us the opportunity to transform this leaflet in a beautiful reality. 2. Romain Hénot – wants new challenges Born in St Martin les Boulogne (North of France) a 24th December, I grow up there all my childhood. When I was 11, I discovered the delights of the boarding school where I met great friends. After completing my A-level certificate and studying 3 years in Classe Préparatoire I chose an engineering school to learn more about aeronautics and railway branches. I integrated the Ecole Centrale de Lille for 3 more years that passed really quickly. My out of school life was rich of experiences with of lot of sport to stay fit and I met some great people … Such like Flo! In 2009, 5 months after our first date, Flo left me alone in France to live a wonderful experience in Australia. I never took the plane before, so I decided to go there for NYE. To buy the tickets, I spent my time providing teenies personal lessons. That two-week-travel made me open my eyes: Romain Floriane Games and stakes of worldwide playgrounds Wonderful landscapes, multicultural country… Why did I always stay in my region and never move around??? After my Master degree and a first experience in railways, I moved to Switzerland with Flo and started working in the aeronautics. Here I am immersed in a multiculti environment where Americans, Europeans and Asians share their skills. Out of work, I practice several sports: Bowling, Archery and squash keep me busy in the evening and when winter and snow are coming, skiing takes over. During the week end, we spent our time discovering Switzerland and Alsace…or sometimes we fly to big European cities: Barcelona, Rom, Innsbruck, Munich… I like new challenges. Travelling around the world is one of the big challenges I have but I’m sure to achieve it with Flo. I’m calm and clear thinking but changes don’t afraid me, on the contrary, it motivates me. So, follow us in this adventure, you will never regret it! 3. Our strengths, our first travel experiences Since 2009, we are traveling together. We use every long week-end to discover European cities: Barcelona, Amsterdam, Bruges, Brussels, Milan, Venetia, Roma, Zürich, Geneva, Dublin, and London. In November 2012, we made a 3-week-treck in Thailand. We took our backpack and hiking shoes “as if” it was already our long trip. We only wanted to show skeptical people that a 18month-trip is not an improvisation but we are well prepared. We are getting very well along and we have always been there for one another, in the good as in the bad times. We are confident; two complementary people with the same goal. Furthermore, Floriane speaks German and English fluently; she is learning Spanish. Romain speaks fluent English, a (little ☺ ) bit German and is also learning Spanish. We hope that we will be able to cope with every situation. Of course, we will take a small electronic translator… ☺ Romain Floriane Games and stakes of worldwide playgrounds 3. Our Project 1. Objectives “The child is entitled to receive education, which shall be free and compulsory, at least in the elementary stages. He shall be given an education which will promote his general culture and enable him, on a basis of equal opportunity, to develop his abilities, his individual judgment, and his sense of moral and social responsibility, and to become a useful member of society. The best interests of the child shall be the guiding principle of those responsible for his education and guidance; that responsibility lies in the first place with his parents. The child shall have full opportunity for play and recreation, which should be directed to the same purposes as education; society and the public authorities shall endeavor to promote the enjoyment of this right.” This is the 7th principle of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child adopted in 1959 by the United Nations. This Right of receiving an Education and recreation seems to be respected in Occidental Europe but how is it in other places? Do all children have the right to go to school? Is Education free everywhere? Do children play everyday? Do they have the same games as us? These questions interest us. During this Round trip we will meet elementary schools and discuss with the pupils about plays and games they like. Playing is universal even if cultures and languages are different. Football rallies a whole country around a team; golfer impresses million of people… In fact games seem to be the best way to discover a culture through kids ‘eyes. Childhood is a theme that we feel very strongly about. It’s a period in life full of innocence, of dreams and of invincibility’s’ feeling… it’s also during this time that you make your first experiences and discoveries. Trying by yourself is the best way to start thinking and acting by yourself. With 7 you make your first judgments. It’s a fantastic time, that’s why it was an evidence for us to combine our Travel with a cultural project with children. With each class, we will make short interviews about plays and games; we will also organize recreational and inventive activities. Moreover we would like to create some partnership between classes interested in school exchanges (with E-mails, letters…) To make this project become true we contacted school academies and schools in France to explain them our ideas. We met teachers who believe in it. We spent time playing in the playground and then we discussed with pupils about how they imagine the schools overseas and which questions they would like to ask them. (You can find a list of our contact and a small summary of our interviews in appendix) In a second step, we contacted schools abroad to arrange a visit when we will travel. First we focused on French Schools abroad because it’s easier to communicate with kids if we have the Romain Floriane Games and stakes of worldwide playgrounds same mother tongue. Then we enlarged our prospecting and we sent our project to local schools. (In Appendix you’ll find the list of all schools who already accepted to receive us) When we come back, if some French schools are interested in, we would like to return in their classes and present pupils what we learnt, answer their questions… It’s really important for us to share our experience especially with young people because when you are young you start evaluating and judging things and people. We often express negative judgment on what we don’t know. That’s why we want to bring kids a different view of the world; to show them that even if games, languages and cultures are different in France, in Kenya, in Australia or in China, a kid stays a kid with a name, a smile, a dream. In addition to debates and discussions made with the classes, we will regularly update our website (www.flo-and-romain-around-the-world.com). The “Forum” area will permit the followers to react and also to give us some advices and ideas. The common thread of this travel will be: MEETING, SHARING and RESPECT 2. Timetable Such a project needs time to get ready. You cannot decide to go from one day to the next! It’s now several years that we are thinking about it but it’s only in 2012 that we started the first steps: choice of itinerary, first drafts of our idea, budget estimation, saving money, and, and, and… We contacted some schools and actors of the Education in order to start the project on strong basis. In November 2012 we went 3 weeks to Thailand with a backpack and trekking shoes. It was a way to show everybody who could doubt, that we are capable of going ahead on our own everywhere with 3 shirts, 5 slips and our English ☺ (Even if it’s not perfect) From January 2013 we have been meeting French Schools that are interested in our project. The website is online. After having collected all information, we decided to write this brief to convince our futures partners to make a contribution. Without you, the realization of that project will not be entirely possible… We are scheduling to leave in Mai 2014 and the trip will last 18 months. 18 months are necessary to visit a “small” part of the 5 continents without using always the plane. Our objective is to take the local public transportation as much as we can; it’s a great way to meet people and culture. 3. Itinerary We chose to visit the 5 continents. Of course 18 months are too short to visit all countries. We eliminated European countries, that we already know and for security reasons we also eliminated Middle East and central Africa countries. Romain Floriane Games and stakes of worldwide playgrounds First flight will take us to Nairobi in Kenya. From there we will go to South Africa and fly to Asia for 6 months. After 3 months in Oceania, we will go to Santiago of Chile where our American trip will begin. It will end in Canada in October 2015. We deliberately chose to use the plane only if necessary. (Boat is a too long way of transport). For our other trips we will go on our own: Walking, Bus, Taxi, train… Of course we prepared a « To see places» list (like Great Wall of China, Great Bareer reef, Iguazu…) but we will stay flexible. It will allow us to stay much longer in some beautiful places and shorter in some other. 4. Our Web Site Our Internet Web site has been realized in 2 months. We tried to make it clear to be liked by large and small. You’ll find all necessary information and useful links about the project preparation: - Project presentation, budget and itinerary. - Blog area with articles, photos and videos about games at school and our experience. - Other information such as administrative documents, sanitary risks… - Links to our partners We decided to create this website for some reasons: - It’s a good way to stay in contact with our families and friends but also with all people we will meet during this trip or those who want to follow our route. Thereby we would like that the schools we will visit can look the story we wrote about them and see other stories from other places. This website could be a sharing platform between pupils. Romain Floriane Games and stakes of worldwide playgrounds - Internet is also a good and efficient solution to enhance our partners and all public bodies or people who contribute to that project. This Website is not only a mirror of our story. We want it to be alive, like a real sharing between us and all people following us. We will try to answer all questions in the forum and to write new articles as often as we can. You can find this website under the link: www.flo-and-romain-around-the-world.com 4. Sponsorship 1. Why a sponsorship ? Having sponsors is something important for us. Beyond the financial help for our project, this partnership has several advantages: - Build a solidarity sharing between a company, young graduates and pupils over the world. Professional adventure. It allows us to keep a foot in the world of work. Make this project well known from important actors, who can speak about us in their turn. We are convinced that this sponsorship will be a real partnership. We are expecting help from you; in exchange we will invest us in our mission in order to complete your own expectations. 2. How can you help us ? We are looking for 3 types of help: - Financial support: for more than 2 years now we are saving money, however without your help we will not be able to realize this project in full. Equipment: Clothing, hiking equipment, communication tools. (Computer/ Navi / Camera…) Communication and Exposure: Talking about our project is also an important fact for us. The most famous will be our travel around the playgrounds of the world, more opportunities we will have to realize it from A to Z. It’s not a one-way-support. We have also something to give you: 3. What can we give you? Even if each sponsoring is different, here are some examples of what we can bring: - Exposure: On our Website (Your Logo and a link to your own Webpage) but also in all press releases and during our events (Photo exhibitions, conferences…) Expend your solidarity image : By combining your company with our project values : Childhood, Culture and Sharing. Organize an event for your collaborators : Conference, photo exhibition, debates… Of course, all partners will receive a feedback on what we discovered and a balance sheet on how was used your investment. Romain Floriane Games and stakes of worldwide playgrounds All of theses suggestions are only examples. They are not “forced obligations” but few sharing ideas. We also would like to know what you are expecting so that we can build a “clever” partnership, which could satisfy both sides. Your ideas are welcome ☺ 5. Estimated budget Don’t hesitate to check any changes and update on our Web site www.flo-and-romain-around-the-world.com
