COMMODORE’S REPORT
From the Commodore’s Desk
As many of you know I spent many
years as an Indiana High School
and University of Arkansas
Basketball Coach. At every half time the coach grabs all of
the information he can about the game. The stat sheets and
shooting charts are imperative to finalize the plan of action
for the rest of the game. This is the halftime report for our
club.
We knew going into this season that our marina payments
were going to increase as our lender had given us three
years of interest only payments and the three years were
over. The principal amortized over 27 years would
increase our monthly payments by a little over two thousand dollars per month. This fact has influenced every
decision that the board has had to make this season. We
also knew that we annually are unable to have one hundred
percent in member retention. Along with the customary
member services the club provides for us we are moving
forward on all three issues.
Our treasurer made a semi-annual pilgrimage to the bank
armed with our year to date financials provided by the
financial officer. The officers of the bank were very
pleased with our financial position and the controls that the
treasurer has instituted to control assets, cash and cash
flow. As the treasurer prepared to make his semiannual
presentation he also conducted a thorough audit of our cash
flow processes. He found that all funds belonging to the
club from all activities have been totally accounted for. All
funds raised for and by the club are in the accounts at the
bank and are controlled by the NERYC Treasurer.

The financials are currently available to the
membership and are presented to the board every
meeting. All of this was good news to the board, but
we still have to deal with the additions negative cash
flow caused by the principal payment.
The financial officer has identified the fixed assets of
the club with values and depreciated values. All of
our club owned boats are identified and the
Dockmaster has placed the appropriate stickers on
each to identify the individual boats and that they are
property of NERYC. If you are interested, the
financial officer can provide you with an Excel
spreadsheet of these assets.
Along these same lines, the club administrator has
added another tool to help the board make prudent
decision regarding programs, expenditures and events.
All events and programs now prepare an event planner
for the desired event. This tool does not supplant the
three signature requirement of the treasurer for checks,
but does notify and requests permission from the
board for all club events. This tool also gives us a
historic perspective for future event administrators to
find the numbers of participants, amount of expected
income and cash needed for the event.
In 2009 we lost 30 members and in 2010 we lost 22
members. The membership chair, although unhappy with
any losses, was positive about the reduction in losses this
year. Eight of the 2010 lost members joined in 2007. The
rest were spread out over the years including one from
1983. From January 1, 2010 to the present we have
gained 17, five were approved at the May board meeting,
which puts us ahead of the same period last year. We had a
total of 24 new members last year. This makes the
membership chair feel very positive about the potential for
a net gain this year. We need to remember that the key to
the Club's membership is retention. Part of that job is
making all of the members, new and old, feel welcome,
getting them engaged and addressing their
concerns quickly! I also think we need activities for
all interests and age ranges which I think we are now
doing.
Along with the growth in membership we are seeing
increases in slip rentals. Although we are below our
budgeted levels, we are seeing most new members taking
slips. I have met with the owners of area marinas that have
been long time active members of the club. These members
have been very supportive of our efforts and are passing
along prospective members and slip holders to us when
they cannot accommodate the needs of those boaters. The
Dockmaster hopes to be above the budgeted number by
July 1.
The board received a lot of feedback when the year started
regarding our cash flow situation. A majority of the
membership feedback was to host more outside events. In
the food and beverage department we have booked more
outside events than were held for the same time last
year. Also, we have more bookings for the rest of the year
than at the same time last year. Dining sales are up 7.5%
from January first of this year over the same period in
2009. The dining room always has to play catch up from
the lack of activity during the winter. We hope that the rest
of the boating season up to the Commodore’s ball will be
enough time to catch up. This year with the increased
member dining and contracted events it appears we are
headed for a good year in this department.
Building and grounds were able to add another AED to
the club entirely from donations. The new AED is in a
box on the dock with the notice board. We are
switching propane vendors this year. This move will
save the club between one thousand and one thousand
five hundred dollars a year on propane fuel bill. We are
in the process of putting together a "book" on the club
systems. The electrical system will be mapped out, as
will the septic system and winterizing the dock pump
out, the club water lines, etc. Everything we can think
of so those who follow will have an easy resource.
The board is working on many upcoming club events.
Share a ride on Sunday June 6 will be a great mixer for
seasoned members, new members and prospective

We have several boats in need of name changes. As of
now we have five boats involved in the club wide party.
Please join us on the evening of Friday, June 11 at 18:30
or 6:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend at no charge,
please bring a dish. Beverages will be provided. Anyone
wanting to participate should contact me in order to
have enough Champagne for the members to enjoy
during our Chaplain’s (John Sergeant) service. On June
12 we have been chosen by the NorthEast Women’s
Civic Group to participate in the annual garden tour.
Our gardens look great this year and we should be the
hit of the day. Also on June 12 the sail race chair and
committee will host NERYC’s Annual Invitational Sail
Race. This event is always a great hit and brings many
guests to the club. Saturday June 19th is the early
summer fund raiser to support the Commodore’s Ball.
This year we are having a shrimp feast and doing away
with the oysters. With this event we will have the
customary auction. On June 20th, Father’s Day, the club
is hosting the annual Fleet Pass & Review and dock
party. As you can see, June is packed with tons of fun
and camaraderie. Try to make as many of these events
as you can.

The season is upon us and the club
Grounds are buzzing with sailors,
power boaters, and guests enjoying
what have been a superb Opening
Day and beginning of the season.
Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make
the activities enjoyable by all. The flower gardens
added to the beauty of our grounds showing the work
of the many that nourished their growth. Thanks to
many of you who provided the delicious food for
members and guests, there was hardly a crumb left at
the end of the day.

The club is officially "open" for the
season, new boats continue to grace
our marina, and the official start of
summer is just a few weeks away.
June is certainly shaping up to be a busy month here at
the club. First, be sure to take notice that due to
conflicting events, Birthday, Anniversary, and New
Member night will be celebrated on SATURDAY,
June 5th. If you have the good fortune to be
celebrating one of those events this month be sure to
come on down to the club to obtain your FREE
libation!
We continue to have more prospective members and
guest enjoying our club and we want to make sure their
visits are recorded in our guest book at the front door
entrance. It not only maintains a log of those visiting,
it follows the rules of the club and supports our status
as a private non-profit yacht club. So please remember
to have your guests sign in when visiting us.
On Saturday, June 19th, we will have our world
famous, All you can eat Shrimp Feast! This will be in
tandem with our annual Silent Auction fund raiser.
Come dine on a variety of delicious shrimp dishes
prepared by Chef John and peruse the vast array of
items, yours for the taking, IF, you are the winning
bidder! Sign up sheets are located at the club entrance
for the Shrimp Feast and also for what you might care
to donate towards the auction. You can also contact
me, or co-chairs, Lady Gloria, or Secretary Ginny, to
let us know you are coming and what you will
contribute.
This weekend we had many members cruise to Inner
Harbor Marina to enjoy what the Charm City of
Baltimore has to offer. Many others joined them by car
and boat to enjoy the cocktail party on Saturday. The
weather cooperated and the Fleet Captain’s locker
never ran out of beverages. Some are following up the
next weekend at Maryland Yacht Club for their
opening and Queen of the Chesapeake Pageant. As was
noted, there are many activities going on so I encourage
everyone to participate and enjoy the Chesapeake!
On Saturday, following the auction, we will have our
annual Fleet Pass & Review and Dock Party. More
information on this event can be found elsewhere in
this issue of the Waterline.
As a medical professional, and instructor in CPR, I
would like to take a minute to thank our Safety
Officer, Pat Shaw, for spearheading the AED project
here at the club. A second AED has been purchased
and installed on the docks. That, along with the
training many of our members have received in it's
use, make NERYC one of the best prepared clubs on
the bay to deal with a cardiac emergency!
It has been fun to see our members and their dogs
enjoying the Club; an important reminder though, our
House Rules and Dock Policy require that ALL dogs be
leashed when on Club grounds.

FROM THE PRINCESS
By the time you read this, we will
have celebrated an awesome
cruise to Baltimore Inner Harbor
Marina complete with Happy
Hours galore. Several boats in
our Fleet could not resist the party at Baltimore Yacht
Club so they cruised there but will be joining us for
Happy Hour at Inner Harbor.
The Pass-In-Review and Dock Party is scheduled for
Father’s Day, June 20th and what a great way to
celebrate our fleet. Please get your food donations to

family party during and after the water event. See

July 9-11th we have a cruise planned to Lankford Bay
Marina up the Chester River past Rock Hall. They
have a great pool and the trolley bus makes regular
trips to Rock Hall so you can enjoy some time there.

credit card info for the first night’s stay.

This past month has been great. I've
been so busy attending opening
ceremonies at all of the
beautiful clubs around the bay with
our
past and current officers.. Its just so much for one to take
in. Running between 3 different club openings in one day
then to one of our club events afterwards, and then finally
ending the night with a princess sleep over. Its like
working at a real job, just that I don't get paid in cash
(unless my commodore forgets me). This is one of my
favorite months of the year, the other girls and I have
made so many memories around this time that will last us
a life time. I'm so very excited for the Queen's Pageant
next week. I've been working very hard to get to this
point and I hope to make our club proud. I hope you will
be able to come to Maryland Yacht Club next Sunday to
support me in my quest for the crown and the title
“Queen of the Chesapeake” !
School is sadly coming to an end and summer vacation is
about to begin. I'm so excited to not have to get up at six
am every morning and sit through 6 hours of school for
the next 3 months. I'm ready for our boats to get into the
water and the many boat parties and days out on the
bay to start.

FROM THE RACE
COURSE
Sail Race Program
With one race left in the Spring
Series the opportunity to improve positions is down to the wire
for some competitors. What a strange spring as far as wind
goes: one race postponed due to a gale and three races where
the wind insisted in blowing from the east or west instead of
the predominant north or south direction. Here’s hoping for
the wind to co-operate, just for a change, so the fleets have the
opportunity to employ some tactical racing on a truer
windward/leeward course for race 5. To celebrate the end of
the Spring Series, the SRC invites skippers and their crew to
stay after racing, celebrate the results and enjoy a ‘Bring and
Share’ social around the keg on June 5th.
Our premier NERYC race event, the Invitational Race and Pig
Roast Party, is scheduled for June 12th. This race is open to
competitors from our neighboring clubs on the Upper Bay, and
we are looking forward to showcasing both the racing program
and the club to all our visitors. This year we would once again
like to take the opportunity to acknowledge our returning event
sponsors: West Marine, Harken, Annapolis Performance
Racing Walden Rigging, and we welcome new sponsors
SpinSheet and Doyle Chesapeake. We trust that all racers as
well as club members will turn out to support both the club
and our sponsors at this exciting event. The pig roast party will
feature live music, loads of amazing draw prizes, free keg,
cash bar and rum drink specials and is open to all. At just $20
p.p including tax and gratuity (kids 12 and under pay $10) you
won’t find better value. All racers - please register to race
online before Monday June 7th to avoid late fees. All members
- please RSVP for the party to info@neryc.com.
P.S. Remember to order your collectors item race t-shirts in
advance, we will not have additional stock for sale on the day
– order deadline is Wednesday June 2nd.
Don’t forget that our fun, informal and relaxing Thursday
evening racing starts on June 17th. If you can manage to sneak
away from the office a little early, this provides the perfect
escape and yet another excuse to get out on the water, as if you
really needed one. No experience or qualifications required.
All you need is a boat and one or two crew. If you do not have
a boat, why not consider utilizing one of the club’s small boat
fleet of sailing dinghies (see flyer for details). Please come out,
race or just enjoy a meal on the patio while watching the sun

THE JR SAIL PROGRAM
Junior Program
Our Mission
To empower young people by fostering a life-long love of
sailing and boating; by teaching respect for others and
the marine environment; by providing a solid foundation
in the knowledge and arts of seamanship; by building
confidence, self reliance and a sense of achievement
through the mastery of boat handling skills, and by
stimulating an appreciation for the merits of hard work,
dedication, teamwork and the Corinthian spirit in
competition.
The summer program is well on its way to setting another
new record for registrations. We have 185 confirmed
registrations, three sessions are already closed, and some
others are fast approaching capacity. In order to meet
this challenge, the Summer Program Team has been hard
at work ‘gearing’ up: hiring additional instructors,
tightening safety and procedures and enhancing the
curriculum. Not only do we have many new families
registering, we also have an incredibly high student
return ratio. According to the kids our sail camp:

“…is amazing fun!”
“… it was awesome!”
“… it was the highlight of my summer!’’
The duties are quite simple and no heavy lifting or hard
work is required. Volunteers must report by 9:30 am and
leave may leave around 4 pm each day. Safety is one of
our primary concerns and we need an adult volunteer
present each camp day in case of any emergencies, to
liaise with camper parents and to assist the instructors
when needed. For the most part, our staff are well
equipped to deal with the day to day activities so
volunteers will have the opportunity to relax, read, work
on their boats or work remotely for a large portion of the

Finally, NERYC Junior Sailing would like to congratulate to
Shannon Wilkins, our own junior sailing graduate and sail
camp instructor, for being selected as a member of the Old
Dominion University Women’s Team to compete at the Inter
Collegiate Sailing Association National Championships, in
Madison Wisconsin, May 25-28. Way to go Shannon! We are
pleased to report that the team managed to secure third place
overall behind College of Charleston and Boston College.

It is true, they can hardly wait to get back again this
summer, so if you have children/ grandchildren, family or
friends with kids, please encourage them to register
online at neryc.com ASAP. As an added note has been
extremely gratifying to see the increasing number of new
club memberships that are directly attributable to the
program. This is vital not only to the club, but it is also
integral to building a thriving community of junior sailors
at NERYC.
Sessions start on June 14 and run through August 9th,
Monday through Thursday.

Dear NERYC Campers
Spring is finally here and that means the first session of summer sailing camp is just around the
corner.
We can’t help remembering the amazing time we spent teaching everyone to sail last year: rigging
boats, tying knots, tacking, gybing, capsize drills, swimming, playing games… Wow so much fun!
Yes indeed, those warm summer days spent together in the classroom, and out on the water will
stay with us forever.
This year we have additional certified instructors joining our training team, and everyone is looking
forward to sharing their knowledge and love of sailing with each of you this summer. If you have
never sailed before, you will learn the basics and have loads of fun in the process. If you have
graduated beyond the beginner level, we expect to focus on more advanced sailing and racing
techniques, and you will have the opportunity to use the knowledge and experience you have
gained to develop your skills further. Remember, the more actual time you spend on the water,
the more confident you will become. Besides which, what else could be more fun than spending
time sailing?
For those of you that have discovered what an awesome time learning to sail at NERYC can be,

Hello fellow members!
We welcome 5 new members to
NERYC this month.
Welcome to Ed and Linda Milkewicz
and a 30’ HUNTER, Serenity, on C dock. They live in
Harleysville, Pa but most recently had their boat in
Baltimore. They chose NERYC because it was closer to their
home. We welcome back Steven and Lisa Frankel and their 2
children, George and Jack of Wilmington, DE. Steven and
Lisa were members years ago before having children. They
own a 16’ Boston whaler and sunfish. Frank and Michele
GORSKI and their 3 children, Daniel, Sarah and Emily have
to NERYC through Pat and Cliff Shaw. Frank is the brother
of Chris who is Courtney Shaw Gorski’s husband. They do
not own a boat yet but hope to soon! Ken and Mary Clark
Confalone who live across the river in Charlestown have
become members. They are friends of Nigel and Joanne
Veater. They have a small fleet of boats that they keep at
their own dock, but will be sailing them across the river to the
Club for dinner and events. Their daughter’s wedding
rehearsal dinner will be held in the Commodore’s dining
room this summer. Mike and Belinda Adkins are our newest
members and they have joined NERYC to learn about sailing
and boating after taking sailing lessons. They currently are
looking for a 25’ to 30’ sailboat to use to cruise the Bay.
Welcome aboard to all of our new members. We hope to see
all of our new members often at the Club and when you do
please greet them.
Unfortunately due to the threatening weather, we had to
postpone the Share a Ride Event until 2pm, Sunday, June 6th
if you could not participate as a captain or rider on the 23rd,
now is your chance. We have lots of folks who want to ride
or captain so there are plenty of opportunities for you. Please

make a reservation.
The membership committee has planned a great afternoon for
the member appreciation picnic on Saturday, July 24 from
1pm to 5pm.
1:00 pm - registration and welcome
1:30 pm - dog show with prizes for every loved pooch.
2:00 pm - cardboard boat race and live music by the Sin City
Light Band
2:30 pm - eating begins!!!! We will have burgers, hotdogs
and dishes to share all set up on the veranda. We will have
beer, wine and ice tea and lemonade for drinks. We complete
our meal with an assortment of desserts and “make
your own” ice cream sundaes.
Horseshoes and volley ball will be set up on the grounds
just below the clubhouse. The small club owned boats will
be ready for you to take out for a sail and instructors/
helpers will be available to assist. The beach will be
available for those who would like to cool off. We plan to
wrap up the day around 5pm but the party can continue
into the night in the restaurant and bar!!! Detailed
information will be in this Waterline and after June 1st at
neryc.com and through the yahoo groups. It should be a
really fun day, so we hope to see you there!!!
Attention Members
Members who are not slip holders in the NERYC marina
may tie up on the outside of A dock (on the North East
town side), on the outside of D dock (on the side closest to
the Bay), or on the attenuators at the entrance to the
marina, if you are attending an event or having dinner in
the Restaurant. We ask that you be mindful of traffic
coming in and out of the marina and do not block the
fairways. In addition, there are electric hook-ups
designated for transients on A dock and the attenuators.
Please contact Frank Wile, the dock master, if you plan to
use the electric or would like to keep your boat at the
marina overnight. Frank can be reached through e-mail

Also, because we are a private club and not a commercial
marina, any of your visitors who plan to bring their boats
to our marina must contact Frank in advance to make
arrangements. Any visitor bringing a boat must be
affiliated with a boating or yacht club. If you have any

Feast and Silent auction. It has always been a night full
of fun and enjoyment as well as lots of shrimp prepared
in a variety of ways. Mark your calendars now so you
will make sure to have that evening open.

Somers and I will be glad to take donations for this
fund raiser. In the past, several fun items have been
auctioned. Last minute items I never thought would
bring excitement caused bidding wars in previous year.
Remember you do not have to donate items, but can
volunteer your services to be donated. The brunch, dinners, overnight stays, and boating outings were always
enjoyed by the winning bidders. Everyone always has
a fun time. So mark your calendars for a great meal
and auction. This year we may add a little flavor and
have a live auction for a few items.
Bring a few friends, family, appetite, your check books
and join us for our Annual Shrimp Feast and Auction.
