Version #2 - World Fantasy Convention 2016
CODE OF CONDUCT We do not tolerate harassment of the people at our convention in any form. In order to take action, we need to know about any incident during the convention. Everyone is entitled to a harassment-free convention experience, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, or physical appearance. Harassment includes, but is not limited to, inappropriate physical contact, unwelcome sexual attention, offensive verbal comments, deliberate intimidation, stalking or following someone, making harassing photography or recordings, and disrupting talks or other events. Anyone asked to stop any unacceptable behavior is expected to comply immediately. A request to “stop” or “go away” means exactly that. If anyone engages in harassing behavior, the convention committee may warn the offender, remove the offender from the room, or expel the offender from the convention with no refund at the Chairs’ discretion. If you feel that you are being harassed, or if you notice someone violating hotel or convention policies, we respectfully suggest the following: 1. If you feel comfortable doing so, point out the inappropriate behavior to the persons involved. Often this will solve the problem immediately. 2. If you do not feel comfortable talking with the persons involved or if talking to them does not resolve the issue, please report the situation, in person, immediately to the Operations Staff, or a Convention Committee member. Try to provide a name (found on all badges) and/or a physical description of the person or persons involved. 3. In order to take action, we need to know about any incident during the convention. Henry and James Thurber. In Columbus you may find brooding gargoyles and “unicorns in the garden” mixing with our global community of authors, editors, publishers, artists, agents, and others who share a serious interest in fantastic literature and art. PROGRAMMING Programming for 2016 will be coordinated by Darrell Schweitzer. Darrell and the programming department will be in touch with people during the summer. We will put the information up on the website and on Facebook as soon as it becomes available. Randal Spangler grew up in Missouri; he is a talented artist and creator of a variety of whimsical characters such as the Draglings, Dagmar and Dewey. His childhood memories helped shape, and give life to characters that were a primary source of inspiration for the "Land of Ohm." He began his professional career in 1977. Since then, he has attended over a thousand art fairs and/or Renaissance festivals in nineteen states and won over one hundred awards. His work is licensed on numerous products – including puzzles, cross-stitch designs, murals, and wallpaper. It is also featured at the Museum of Art and Whimsy in Sarasota, FL; The Epic Corp. in Madison, WI; The Children's Illustrated Art Museum in St. Louis, MO.; and at various libraries and schools. He shares his experiences and memories through his creative and fun artwork, selling tens of thousands of prints each year to collectors in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Pacific. The Randal Spangler collection of whimsical, colorful artwork is magical indeed. With each piece, and with each paint stroke, a story is told, a memory remembered, and an adventure is yet to be encountered. His website is http://www.randalspangler.com/ The bios for Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon will be in the next progress report. HOTEL Hyatt Regency Hotel 350 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio, 43215 Toll Free Phone: 1-800-233-1234 Local Phone: 1-614-463-1234 Fax: 1-614-280-3034 Our downtown hotel is 1.3 miles from the COSI museum and 3.3 miles from the Franklin Park Conservatory. It is also very close to the Columbus Art Museum. The Hyatt Regency Columbus makes a great location for our convention, they have welcomed fans for almost 30 years, they understand what is needed and – they like us! As of 31 May 2016, our block is about 90% full, but we still with have both king and double/double rooms available (please let us know if there is a problem). The room rate is $149.00 per room (single through quad). You can make your reservations by either phone or through the hotel page on our website. The Hyatt Regency rooms feature upgraded amenities like swiveling flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and iPod docks. If you want to eat at the hotel, you can dine at the Market Stand Café, or enjoy a beverage at Big Bar on 2 (in 2010 we drank the Big Bar dry from the top shelf down – they really do love us!). Air Travel Port Columbus (CMH) is the commercial airport for Columbus. It is an easy 15-minute drive to the hotel from the airport. There is a COTA air connect express bus that runs from the airport to downtown Columbus with a stop at the corner by the Hyatt. It runs every 30 minutes and costs $2.75. Parking Information Valet Parking at Hyatt Regency Columbus is $26.00 per night with unlimited in-out privileges. Self-Parking can be put on your room bill. Because of the remodeling going on at the Hyatt the best information for selfparking is to talk to the Valet when you get to the hotel. The Valet will give you the current directions, and it costs $18.00 per night. Self-parking in the adjacent underground garage is $18.00 per 24-hour period. This cannot be put onto your room account. Additional self-parking is available one block east of the hotel on Nationwide Blvd. (in the East Lot) at $14.00 per 24-hour period. Other Hotels Near the Hyatt There is a Food Court under the same roof (outside of the hotel proper) if you want to grab a bite, but don't forget the ConSuite – we are making plans for it to be as marvelous as 2010. If, after all that eating, you feel the need for exercise, the Hyatt offers a newly renovated StayFit™ fitness center. Crowne Plaza Columbus-Downtown, 33 E. Nationwide Blvd., Columbus, OH 43215 The Hyatt Regency is close to the Arena District, a lively neighborhood with numerous bars, restaurants and shops (last time, we found and liked the Arena District too). Hilton Columbus Downtown, 401 N. High St., Columbus, OH 4321 Drury Inn & Suites Columbus Convention Center, 88 E. Nationwide Blvd., Columbus, OH 43215
