* We A-L-L have Ink Cartridges which can be collected for use by schools & churches
(in Hondo, you may take your used cartridge to the Castroville Computers of Hondo
store on 18th Street where they will be picked up periodically by a Rotarian for delivery
to Hondo HS, where Sally Bader, BPA sponsor, uses them for that organization.)
* Do you know that Soup Cans and Cereal Boxes have Reward Points which can
also be collected for use by schools & churches to get a bit of financial support - takes
about 20 seconds (Interact is going to start a project for their school so please contribute and we’ll make sure the kids get the credit!)
Highlights from Sept. 3, 2015 meeting
There were 18 Rotarians present. Tracy Staten prospective member. Yusuke Kusajima, Director of Operations, Aviation Academy of
America, South Texas Regional Airport was a guest and speaker.
President Jim Danner called the meeting to order. He informed everyone that the board had voted to accept Tracy Staten as a member.
She will meet with Ann Peden and be inducted at the next meeting.
Our sign had an unfortunate mishap and is in need of repair. A get
well soon card was circulated for Ron Barbutti and President Danner
informed everyone that Ron had made the study group and that we
should continue to keep him in our prayers. Chris Kailipaka informed
us of the upcoming Dramatic Divas Dinner Theatre fundraiser for the
library on October 9-10 & 11. Tracy Staten informed everyone of
a flash mob that was being done on September 5th in front of The
Alamo.
President Danner gave the Rotary Moment. Paul Harris Fellow promotes voluntary giving. In the 1970’s it began to gain popularity. It
represents the member giving $1000 or $1000 given in their name.
Once a pin is received and the member gives another $1000 a blue
stone is added to the Paul Harris Fellow pin up to 5 stars or $5000.
Jannie Bryant made a special presentation to Tim Gilles of his Paul
Harris Fellow #4.
Russ Renard presented our guest speaker Yusuke Kusajima, Director of Operations at the Aviation of America. He was born in Japan
and came to the US in 1999. He stated he came with one suit case
and now has a house, a wife and a dog, life is good. He became a US
citizen 7 years ago. He is a previous owner of the flight school and
considers it “his baby”. He sold it to ST Aerospace which is based in
Singapore, which has other flight schools in Singapore and Australia.
Right the school has 14 students from Singapore being trained to
earn their FAA certification. It is the only school in the US approved
by Singapore to instruct pilots. The flight school employs 10 people
right now. They are planning on expanding and their goal is to have
300 students by the year 2020. They are working with customs to
bring in students from China as well.
Yusuki drew the winning ticket for Jim Danner. Unfortunately she did
not with the half pot and it continues to grow. It is now at $451
