German Veteran’s Day: a time to honor and remember
satellites
hit earth
Cody Bremer
Staff Writer
A German satellite that was
thrust into Earth’s orbit in 1990
recently made its return to the
surface of the Earth. Rontegen
(ROSAT) was put into orbit
to study sources of X-Ray
radiation that hit and penetrated
the atmosphere of the Earth.
It discovered about 125,000
previously unknown sources of
X-Ray radiation.
When ROSAT was shut down
on February 12, 1999, there was
hope of reestablishing electrical
contact with the satellite to
prevent
an
uncontrollable
descent. However, this possible
route of prevention was snuffed
when officials were unable to
establish contact with the now
rogue satellite.
Until this year, ROSAT orbited
Earth regularly. There was some
concern as to whether the satellite
would hit a populated area or
lay to rest in the ocean or other
unpopulated area as the American
Upper Atmosphere Research
Satellite (UARS) did in late
September. The predicted chance
of ROSAT hitting a populated
area was 1 in 2000. Compare
this to the chance of the UARS
satellite hitting a populated area
which sat at a much smaller ratio
of 1 in 3200. This presented a
concern for human safety. Despite
being four tons less massive than
UARS, ROSAT was expected to
have more pieces of debris survive
re-entry. The debris included
burning metal and sharp shards of
mirror. The safety risk of ROSAT
was thought to be much greather
than that of the UARS.
Ideas to prevent the rogue
satellite from harming people
were compiled to prevent
disaster. ROSAT could have been
eliminated by a missile or laser
beam, but German Aerospace
Center Chief Jan Wörner noted in
an interview that, “We [Germany]
do not have the tools for that.”
On October 23, 2011, ROSAT
entered the atmosphere of the
Earth. Fears for disaster were
relieved as the satellite hit the
Earth at an unknown location.
Supposedly, ROSAT came to
rest somewhere in Southeastern
Asia. Asian governments did not
present any reports of injury or
death related to the satellite. The
crash site of this object is still
unknown.
before the assembly.
Each veteran will have
a freshman to personally
escort them to the
assembly. They will be
individually introduced
with their name, military
branch, and details about
the battles they have
fought. CHS’s principal,
Tom Crane, will also be
honored with the rest
of the veterans. One
of CHS’s substitute
teachers, Ralph Gierke,
will also be honored.
They will be having an
M.I.A/P.O.W ceremony,
a key note speaker, the
reading of a poem and
an essay, a visual aid, and a
speech or presentation about the
sacrifices families of veterans
make. The band will be playing at
the assembly and the choir will be
singing the national anthem.
The freshman class is also
putting together an essay and
poetry contest. The subject of the
writing contest is the sacrifices
a veteran and their family must
make. The subjects for the poetry
contest are walking a day in
veteran’s shoes, being a part of
a veteran’s family, sacrifices of
a veteran’s family, and pride for
one’s country. The winning essay
and poem will be read at the
assembly and the winners will be
receiving a free pizza.

On Tuesday September 27,
Emory College student Samuel
Eshaghoff was sentenced to four
years in prison for taking the
SATs for seven Great Neck High
School students in New York.
The seven students were
convicted of a misdemeanor.
Eshaghoff had been charged with
scheming to defraud, falsifying
business records and criminal
impersonation.
The students registered under
a different school so that no
one would reconize them, then
Eshaghoff used fake IDs to pass
himself off as the person who paid
him. Eshaghoff did this easily, but
what caught the scorer’s eye was
the drastic change in the results.
The SAT can determine the
colleges and careers available to
students. In some cases, such as
the Great Neck scandal, students
are under a tremendous amount
of pressure to get into a good
college and, instead of preparing
themselves, they try to cheat the
system in order to be qualified.
What they do not realize is
that when students cheat their
way through an education, the
college that they are accepted
into is trying to teach them at the
level that their test said they were
prepared for.
Some colleges have had to
incorporate several remedial
classes because they accepted
students who do not meet the
criteria.
The students’ grade averages
and courses affect the school’s
reputation.
Therefore, if the students are
continually being put in remedial
classes, it affects the classes that
the school can offer.

Every year, the freshmen
class organizes a Veteran’s Day
assembly. This year, the assembly
will be on Thursday, November
10, at 8:30 a.m. in the high school
gym. It will be about an hour
long.
Members of the community,
including veterans, are welcome
to attend, and if veterans would
like to be honored or recognized,

CHS welcomes Mr. Twitchell
Ms. Hazelton on maternity leave until second semester
Monica Poet
Staff Writer
Everyone reaches a point in
their life where they want to settle
down, and maybe start a family.
For Ms. Hazelton, this is the point
in her life. She is having a baby!
Ms. Hazelton’s last week here
at CHS was October 17-20. She
will be on a three-month maternity
leave, and hopes to return back
at CHS before second semester.
In her teaching absence, Colton
High School has hired a substitute
in her place. That substitute is
Patrick Twitchell.
Twitchell is very excited to
be starting here at Colton. “It’s
good news for Ms. Hazelton and
myself. She needed someone to
be here for her,” he said.
Twitchell went to Oregon
State University for his college
degree in History. He earned his
masters at Concordia University.
He has been teaching for five
years altogether. He spent three
years teaching social studies
in Arizona, one year in Sandy
teaching social studies, and a few
summers teaching in Portland.
Outside of teaching and going
to school, Twitchell likes to play
football, coach football, cook,
hunt, fish, and read.
Over the time Twitchell will be
here, he wishes to accomplish a
few goals. One of them is to keep
Hazelton’s high standards, as well
as provide a rewarding experience.
He also wants to instill hard work
in class and make a learning
web for the students. Twitchell’s
biggest worry about coming into
the classroom mid-year is getting
to know the kids and knowing
the curriculum. “I’m excited to
fill in for Ms. Hazelton. I’m also
nervous, but I’m not afraid,” he
said.
Students all look forward to
getting to know Mr. Twitchell
throughout his time here and wish
the best for Ms. Hazelton.

Mock trial starts year off strong, prepares for competition
Nico Cantelon
Staff Writer
Mock trail has only been
available to Colton High School
for the last two years. The success
of the team has solidified a devoted
following among members of the
community.
In mock trial there is a case that
is give to teachers and coaches
of teams across each county.
The Clackamas County League
is especially tough because it
includes multi-state champion
teams from West Linn.
This is an event so large that
schools from across the country
have-try outs in order to get onto
their teams.
The success of the Colton
Mock Trial Team has been due to
the intelligence of the students in
Colton. The competition is made
of two sides, the defense and
prosecution.

Can reality television actually be beneficial to society?
Chelsey Earls
Editor in Chief
PRO: We always hear people
ranting about how bad reality
TV shows are, and how they
are ruining the young adults and
teenagers in our society. The
question is, what is the message
being set that they think is so
misleading?
How about the TV series
Teen Mom? If you watch more
than about five minutes of it,
you will see that it shows how
straining a teen pregnancy can
be on relationships and how
difficult it really is. Shows like
these are trying to explain the
lives of the people who have to
live with the choices they have
made. Sometimes life works out
for people who didn’t make the
best choices, but there are also
times that it doesn’t work out, and
reality TV does show the parts
where they don’t work. I think
society has made the assumption
that “when it’s on TV, that means
it’s the cool thing to do,” when
in reality, if kids or young adults
thought critically about what
they were watching, they would
understand the purpose of the
show. It’s purpose is to show you
what life is like for a certain group

they see on TV shows, and that’s
not usually good.” She went on
to say that people need to “stop
being stupid and grow up.”
Shows like Jersey Shore are
also known to portray the “bad
girl act,” showing that to be cool,
constantly harassing and hurting
people is part of the job. It is also
full of harsh judgment and poor
morals, in addition to explicit
and unacceptable behavior. Many
people watch the shows thinking
they would never do anything like
that, but the characteristics aren’t
always intentional, sometimes
you won’t even realize when it is
happening. Instead of the drinking,
partying, and bad behavior, the
media should be filled with more
positive things that people could
actually benefit from.
There are also shows like
Intervention, following drug
addicted people to show the
outcome of drugs and illegal
substances. But are they at fault
for not stepping in and calling
the police when people are put at
risk? “It’ not our job to intervene,
we have no obligations to step in,”
said the producer of Intervention.
I believe the safety of innocent
people should be more important
than viewer ratings.
Phobia versus fear: is there really a choice in the matter?
Larissa Harper
Staff Writer
We are all afraid of something,
but are those fears really
phobias? A phobia is defined as
an “irrational fear of a specific
object, activity, or situation that
leads to a compelling desire to
avoid it.” A fear is “something
that causes feelings of dread or
apprehension.” Phobias can cause
anxiety and hinder everyday life,
and fears are just something you
don’t like. Fears are internal and
inside of the mind; they are not a
physical thing. When fears get out
of hand they become a phobia.
Phobias are real; about 8% of
Americans have phobias. They
are serious but can be treated with
professional help. Examples of
real phobias are claustrophobia -
the fear of crowds, agoraphobia
an
anxiety
disorder,
arachnophobia - the fear of
spiders, or social phobia – the
fear of speaking in public.
People often make up phobias
to get attention. They basically
play a trick on their mind to tell
them to change their simple fear
of something into a phobia. That
is wrong because they are lying
and are messing with their minds.
People could have a small fear
and they manipulate it to make
their whole life worse.
Junior Autumn Eells said this
about her phobia, “My fear is of
needles. When I was five I was
late for immunizations so they did
all five at once! At that point I was
screaming and ended up firing my
doctor…while screaming!”

Should all teens be allowed
to vote? Eighteen and nineteen
year olds do! My answer is a
simple no. Think about being
thirteen. Just because you became
a teenager doesn’t magically
transform you into a mature,
trustworthy, reasonable member
of society. Giving the right to vote
to a group of people who aren’t
even allowed to be out at night
past curfew doesn’t sound right.
Teens are not considered adults
until the age of eighteen, but do
adults think that even eighteen is
old enough? The responsibilities
of a registered voter are too much
to ask of a minor. Jury duty for
a fifteen-year-old? Immaturity,
vulnerability, and a lack of
developed personal identity are
not what I want to be descriptors
of the people who have the power
to decide what direction my
country takes. Older teens, most
of whom go to university or have a
job, work hard to realize what the
world needs to be like for them to
achieve their goals. If teens were
to vote, these are the kinds of
teens that I want to be deciding
what is going to be important in
the future instead of the immature
and young youth. The world’s
governments are all influenced
by people with the ability to think
rationally and objectively, so we
should, too. Anybody can press
a button, or fill in the bubble to
vote, but it takes a certain kind of
person to make an educated and
precise decision.
Teen debates validity of youth’s opinion in political voting

Letter to the Editor
I am writing as a Colton High School staff member about your
editorial article on advisories in the October 3, 2011, edition of The
Viking.
First, let me commend your writers on digging into this gender
issue. Their arguments Pro and Con were well thought out and it was
great to see the interest the students have in this issue. My only critique
was that no CHS teachers or advisors were asked for their opinion.
From my perspective, I do not see the same sex Advisory as a
gateway to anything more than it is. There has been no discussion
among the CHS staff about moving toward classes offered only to boys
or to girls. We are spending 32 minutes/week in Advisory activities
versus 27.5 hours/week in mixed gender classroom settings. Seems
like a reasonable distribution of school time to me especially when
compared to the amount of time that we devote to our two spirit weeks
(a little over 2 hours/week). Spirit weeks are just as valuable to our
school culture as is the time spent three times a month in Advisory
activities.
The move to same-sex advisories was to provide a more cohesive
group to discuss a variety of issues facing students and to allow all
students to have an opportunity to have their viewpoint heard. This
is similar to what the Big Buddy/Little Buddy program has evolved
into.

Depression can be one of the most devastating things a teen can go through
performance, a negative attitude,
or even substance abuse can all be
symptoms of depression. When
these symptoms are present, it is
time to seek professional help.
Finding a treatment for this
mental illness can be a challenge.
Antidepressants are what most
people jump to if they are feeling
depressed, but some medications
can make it even worse. It is
extremely important to talk to a
parent, guardian, trusted friend,
or teacher if you think you may
be depressed. They may be able
to help by just talking, listening,
or consulting a doctor. Also,
changing your diet and exercising
can make a big difference. Eating
healthier will improve your mood
and body image. The chemicals
in junk foods can be very harmful
to any body. Exercising releases
endorphins in your body that
also improve you mood, relieve
stress, and help you sleep better
at night.
If you are experiencing any of
these signs or see another person
with these signs, it is important to
talk to the right person and take
the right steps. There is always
a solution no matter what the
problem may be. You are not the
only one; clinical depression is
very common and can happen to
anyone.

The issues of whether
immigrants are an asset or a
liability to a nation offer much
for discussion and debate. The
idea that the immigrant is legal or
illegal plays a crucial role in this
concern. Some people feel that
immigrants offer numerous assets
and opportunities to a nation, as
they fulfill jobs and bring new
ideas. Along with this is the
thought that when immigration
occurs, ideas and cultural aspects
are shared and spread to the nation
the immigrant moves to.
Also, some people share the
opinion that immigrants invest in
a nation’s economy. In addition, it
is said that immigrants contribute
in areas of work in which those
who are native to a nation could
not. With this contribution,
immigrants are viewed as an
advantage to a nation.
On the other hand, immigrants
can also be viewed as a nuisance
and a huge liability. This is
because of large numbers of
immigrants entering the country
illegally and not contributing to
the nation. For example, in 2010
there were nearly 11.2 million
illegal immigrants in the U.S.
Such a high number of illegal
immigrants greatly affects the
nation’s economy, as they do not
contribute as much to the nation.
In contrast, both legal and illegal
immigrants pay taxes in some
way whether it is through income
tax, property tax, or sales tax.
An example of this is that
Mexico has the highest number
of immigrants entering America
illegally
which
contributes
to problems in the U.S. Even
though in numerous cases illegal
immigrants will take low paying
jobs, this still affects other citizens
in the country from having those
jobs. Although employers can get
away with paying immigrants
low wages, in the long run many
immigrants use government
programs that take money out
of the economy. Therefore, this
causes economic problems.
Not only do illegal immigrants
cost money, a nation’s national
security can be in danger from
some illegal immigrants entering
a nation to do it harm. This
contributes to why countries have
border controls.
Altogether, immigrants have a
great affect on a nation, whether
they are legal or illegal. In some
cases, immigrants can offer
positive aspects to a nation and
benefit that nation, but in other
cases, they serve as a negative
aspect, and even a threat.

Being a student in high school
can be a hard thing for teens
world-wide. They show happiness
and spunk on the outside, but does
anyone really know what is on
the inside? Depression is widely
spread amongst teens. It seems
like a sickness with no cure.
Causes of clinical depression
vary depending on the adolescent
it is affecting. Stress is one of the
most common reasons a teen can
become depressed. There could be
conflict between themselves and
their parents, a death of someone
close to them, a breakup with a
boyfriend or girlfriend, abuse, or
even failure at school. Pressure
placed by parents or themselves
can bring these students down,
causing their self esteem to fall
even lower.
Signs of depression can
sometimes be difficult to pinpoint.
It is common teenage behavior
to have mood swings and not be
fully in control of your body and
mind when you are maturing,
but depression is more than just
the temporary “blues.” Clinical
depression can be linked to not
enjoying common activities in your
day to day life. A different eating

With the invisible race for
academic excellence in-between
countries, Oregon has taken a step
forward to encourage our young
adults and teenagers to become
more academically inclined.
The state of Oregon is trying to
make sure each student is passing
the state standards, but with the
encouragement comes more tests
and higher expectations in the
guidelines to graduate. In the next
four years, certain things will be
changing for each graduating

Q: What are a few things you
enjoy doing outside of school?
A: During the winter I like
to go skiing and travel. In the
summer, I enjoy playing golf and
traveling. I spent all of last July
in California and in Denver. I
also went to a lake and did some
wake-boarding. I love living here
because on one side I have the
mountains and on the other side
I have the ocean. I also have kids
and grand kids in Pendleton, so I
go out and see them a lot.
Q: Do you have any hobbies
or something you enjoy doing
that you prefer not to involve
your family in? Why?
A: Not really, my family is
involved in most everything I do.
My family and I go to California
every summer.
Q: Does your family have any
hobbies or things they do that
they prefer you not to be involved

A: I’m sure they probably do
things they prefer me not to be
involved in, I mean they have
there own lives. My family and I
are very connected; we do a lot of
things together.
Q: What do you do to relax?
A: I like to get away. I’ll go
skiing, go to a park, or to an
ocean.

might have different political
views than I do.

A: Not really now, but when
I was younger my brother got
into sky diving and my parents
didn’t want me to get involved
in that because it was too risky.
Mostly it’s just dangerous things
like that they don’t want me to
be involved in.
Q: What do you do to relax?
A: I like to kick back, drink
an iced tea from Starbucks, and
read the paper.

Opportunities for community service

Throughout the world there are
many places that would benefit
from a helping hand. Living in
the Colton area, volunteers can’t
help everyone, but they can
do their best to help out in the
community.
If a person likes to work with
animals, the Oregon Zoo or the
Oregon Humane Society could be
a great place to work. The Oregon
Zoo has a program called Zooteens
which is available for students in
grades nine through twelve. It
is offered durring the summer.
The Oregon Humane Society is
another option that is around all
year. To get involved with either
of these organizations, an online
application is needed. They will
then notify volunteer when they
have an opening or if they don’t
have any current openings.
A more local option for
volunteer work would be the
Colton Community Center. They
distribute food to people who
need it every Tuesday during the
afternoon. There are also several
food banks in the area that could
use more volunteers.
Volunteering
is
very
beneficial to an individual as
well. It helps people to get job
recommendations, and the hours
that are done can go towards CHS
Honors Diploma. It is a proven
fact that when a person helps
someone else, it makes someone
feel better about themself.

Everyone knows about the
Colton Middle School, but do
they know what lies just above
the school in the attic? That is
where the Clothes Closet is.
The Closet was founded by
CHS teacher Debbie Tiusanen.
“I was the life skills teacher and
I was trying to teach job skills.
The kids set it up and advertised
it. It was a huge success! We
help about 150 families a year,”
she stated. It’s been around for
the last thirteen years and is still
continuing to run successfully.
The Clothes Closet is mainly
for the community, so that people
can get nice clothes. It does not
only carry clothes, it also carries
bedding and pots and pans. A
person doesn’t have to live in
Colton for it to be available to
them. There is another Clothes
Closet available in Molalla. Right
now there isn’t a class running the
Colton Clothes Closet.
If a person is interested in
the clothes closet it is open
from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
every Wednesday. Someone
can also call the middle school
and make an appointment with
Mrs. Silverthorn. Silverthorn
is the main person who runs it.
Everything is free!
If anyone is interested in
donating clothes, all they have
to do is leave them at the middle
school office; they can bring them
there at any time. It is encouraged
that donations be of good quality
and something that someone
might want to buy.
“We always need donations,
and donations of good quality.
We always need donations!” said
Tuisanen.
Not everybody will need to use
the Clothes Closet but it is there
for the community. Anyone can
come and anybody can donate, so
be apart of something great!

Celebrations from abroad

Holidays, who doesn’t love
them?
There’s
Christmas,
April Fools, Valentines Day,
Thanksgiving,
New Year’s,
Easter, and many others. There
are different countries all over the
world that don’t celebrate all of the
listed holidays. Countries around
the world have different customs,
languages, religion, and holidays.
Here’s some information on a few
of them.
In Spain, the month of August
hosts the biggest food fight in the
world. The holiday is called ‘La
Tomatina’. It can be considered
one of the weirdest holidays due
to the fact that ‘La Tomatina’
involves throwing, smacking, and
hitting friends and strangers alike
with overripe tomatoes. Usually
this massive food fight takes
place in the streets of Bunol. The
climax of this event is when the
ham is set on top of a greased
pole, while the participants fight
to get to the top. At the end of the
tomato fight, fire fighters come
and clean the crowds and streets
by spraying
gallons of water over the
tomato covered participants. How
this holiday was started nobody
knows exactly, but it is said that it
honors the town’s patron saint.
Another odd holiday that
occurs every year in Spain is
the Pamplona Bull Running that
goes from July 6 to July 14. The
purpose of this dangerous event
is to get the bulls from Santo
Domingo through the walled
streets of Spain to the bull ring.
Crowds will gather to participate
in running ahead of the bulls.
Death and injury are both possible
in such an event.
Italy has its own food
throwing event, rivaling Spain’s
‘La Tomatina’. The town of Ivrea
battles with oranges instead of
tomatoes. The purpose of this
orange battle is to replicate the
battle held in 1194 that began
with a brave maiden that sliced
the head off the town’s count.
The oranges used today are used
to decrease the excess of Italy’s
production quota.
Another weird holiday would
be ‘Semana Santa’ (Holy week).
It is mostly celebrated in South
America. It revolves around
the re-enactment of the death of
Jesus Christ around the Catholic
holiday of Easter. This holiday
does change through the location
and the individual(s) that host it.
In many cultures people
celebrate a person. In the U.S
there’s Martin Luther King Day,
but in Ireland they celebrate
something a little different.
Ireland holiday celebrates a brave
and respected goat. This holiday
is called “Puke Fair”, and it is
held every year in Kilorglin. It
celebrates a beast that a century
ago escaped from a herd and
alerted villagers of a raid that was
coming near. Now, every year
they gather around the statue and
crown King Puck.
These holidays and festivities
aren’t quite like American
traditions, but they stand out.
They are creative and bring the
community together and that’s
what holidays are all about.
Even if the day is about throwing
tomatoes or oranges, these days
are very important to the people
and should be respected as great
traditions.

Funny,
romantic,
heartbreaking—CHS’s fall play,
Our Town, is all of the above. Set
in New Hampshire during the late
1800s-early 1900s, Our Town tells
the stories of various characters
in a small town, and specifically
follows the story of George Gibbs
and Emily Webb.
In this play, George and Emily
have known each other for as long
as they can remember, and have
grown up together in the small
town of Grover’s Corners. The
play shows their daily lives and
struggles, along with glimpses
into the lives of various characters
in the town. The audience will
watch George and Emily’s
childhood, first love, and eventual
“Entertaining.”
Mr. Bruner is directing the
fall play once again this year,
and the thing he enjoys most
about directing is that, “It gives
students a chance to participate in
a ‘non-contact’ sport that requires
teamwork,
problem-solving,
communications, and personal
management skills in ways that
just don’t happen in the sports
venues. Confidence, poise, grace,
and quick thinking are things that
all show up on stage.”
When asked what he hopes the
audience will take away from Our
Town, Mr. Bruner said, “Hopes,
dreams, desires, and wants are
so eloquently expressed in this
play, particularly in the third act.
“Emily” asks a very poignant
question about reality and
perception. I think we are very
unaware of life going on around
us, and have a tendency not to see
those things of significance. This
play asks the audience to think
about this.”
Mr. Bruner also wanted
people to know that there will be
several special promotions for
the Colton Aid Network. “We
have traditionally used the fall
play as a partial fund-raiser for
this organization that gives so
much back to our community,
donating one-half of all proceeds
beyond expenses to the Colton
Aid Network.”
Opening performances were
this past weekend but if you
haven’t seen it yet, there’s still
a chance! Performances this
weekend will be Nov. 11 and 12.

Imagine cleaning houses and
taking care of other people’s
children every day for years, being
paid less than minimum wage,
and never getting a ‘thank you’.
Imagine being afraid to speak
out because of the consequences
it could bring to you and your
family. Imagine all of this, on top
of being treated less than someone
else and given fewer opportunities
in life, just because of the color
of you skin. Kathryn Stockett
captures all of these scenarios in
her book, The Help, a story about
living as a black maid during the
Civil Rights Movement.
The story takes place in
the early 1960s in Jackson,
Mississippi, and is centered
around three women who decide
to change the way their small town
thinks. Eugenia, or ‘Skeeter’, has
just graduated from college and
returned home, eager to start her
writing career. Aibileen is a black
maid who is taking care of her
seventeenth white child and finds
herself tired and dissatisfied.
Minny is Aibileen’s best friend,
a stout woman who finds herself
constantly fired from her jobs for
mouthing off to her bosses. All
receives an assignment to write
about something that disturbs her.
Her choice disturbs the town.
Deciding to tell the story of a
black maid working for a white
family, Skeeter interviews the
maids living and working in
Jackson and soon finds stories and
answers she wasn’t expecting. The
result is a culture-shattering story
that leaves the country buzzing.
This is the type of story
that carries you through every
emotion. I found myself laughing
out loud one moment, and on
the verge of tears the next. The
Help is a powerful story about
re-examining your values and
speaking up for what you believe
in, even to the point of putting
everything on the line.
This past August, a movie
based on the book was released in
theaters, and it will be released on
DVD Dec. 6.
This is a fast-moving,
heartbreaking story and whether
you see the movie or read the
book, it will leave you thinking
and wanting to read more.

football, but without any rules.”
For lacrosse, people may have
heard something in the news
about it, but many people don’t
know what it is.
Rugby is a similar sport
to American football, but it
has very big differences. For
example, in rugby all the
players can take the ball during
a play and try to score. Also, in
rugby they just can only pass
the ball to the players who are
behind them, if they want to
pass the ball to a player that is
in front of them, they must do it
with the foot.

Most Americans really don’t
know much about rugby and
lacrosse. For rugby, they say
things like, “It’s like football
mainly because football is more
popular here, but there are other
countries that live for rugby. It’s
very popular in all the countries
of Oceana, like Australia, New
Zeland, Fiji Islands and Samoa.
It’s considered a national
sport, shared with cricket and
soccer, in South Africa, and in
other countries like Argentina.
Sincerely, I think that a rugby
team won’t be very popular here
in Colton if the rugby season is
at the same time as the football
season, because football is the
sport that all the people that could
play rugby choose, and they prefer
it. At Colton High School there
are not enough players to make a
rugby team and at the same time
a football team. But I think that if the national summer sport in
the rugby season wasn’t be at the Canada, and in some parts of the
same time as the football season, States is very popular. I think that
it would become a popular sport a lacrosse team in Colton would
because boys who play football be popular, if they don’t play it
want to continue playing and during the football season.
rugby is a perfect sport for this.
Lacrosse is a very popular
sport in Canada and the
United States. It’s a sport that
consistently keeps the opposing
team from scoring and to
dispossess them of the ball
through the use of stick checking
and body contact or positioning.
For the offense, the objective
is to score into the opponent’s

Soccer is becoming more and more popular among Americans
Carlos Quesada
Staff Writer
Soccer is one of the most widely
known sports in the world, but
who knows where soccer comes
from? Soccer appeared in England
in the seventeenth century, and
it became a popular sport very
quickly. At the beginning of the
nineteenth century, there were
a lot of international soccer
associations, and in 1904 FIFA
(Fédération
Internationale
de Football Association) was
created.
Soccer could be considered the
most important sport in the world,
because about 270 million people
participate in it. The continent Galaxy and FC Dallas.
where soccer is most popular is
The national league of the
Europe. The best teams of the
world, F.C. Barcelona (Spain),
Real Madrid (Spain), Manchester
United (England), and Bayern
Munich (Germany) play there.
Another place where soccer is
really popular is South America,
in countries like Argentina and
Brazil. In North America soccer
never has been very popular

States like D.C. United, L.A United States and Canada is the
MLS (Major League Soccer),
and its current champions are
the Colorado Rapids. The most
important soccer competition is
the FIFA World Cup, which is
played every four years and many
nations of the world participate
in it. The last world cup was won
by Spain against the Netherlands.
The United States finished in 31.
So far, Brazil has won the most
World Cups, with five, followed
by Italy with four, Germany with
three, Argentina and Uruguay
with two, and England, France
and Spain with one. The FIFA
World Cup is one of the most
important events of the world. In
2002, 208.8 billion people saw
the world cup, which is more
than watch the Olympic Games.
There are some other important
competitions, like the Champions

the teams that have won their
most important competitions in
their continents.
The best team of the world is

There are approximately three
million sport-related injuries
every year. Amongst these injuries
a large majority are not career
ending or even life threatening
ones. But every once in awhile
there is an injury that goes beyond
the usual sprains and strains.
On November 18, 1985, Joe
Theisman of the Washington
Redskins football team suffered
his career ending injury on
national television. During a
Monday Night Football game
against the Giants, Lawrence
Taylor tackled Theisman from
behind, pinning the quarterback’s
leg awkwardly. The leg proceeded
to snap in multiple places.
Clint Malarchuk, the goal tender
of the Buffalo Sabres hockey
team, had his throat slit by
another player’s blade during a
game, severing his carotid artery.
His life was saved by the team’s
trainer’s quick thinking. This
happened March 22, 1989.
In 1993, Moises Alou was a
rising star for the Montreal Expos
major league baseball team until
he was caught in a rundown
during a game. During the play,
McClair, and obtained extensive
compound fractures to his tibia
and fibula of his right leg. The
game was delayed for twelve
minutes so match officials could
clean up the blood. Opposing
goalkeeper, as well as other
players, was reported to have
undergone
counseling
after
witnessing the aforementioned
injury. Busst’s injuries were so
bad that he ran the risk of having
his leg amputated. It is considered
to be the worst soccer injury
ever.
In 1998, at the age of 14,
Travis Pastrana dislocated his
spine from his pelvis. He came
up short on a landing during a
freestyle motocross competition,
hitting the dirt so hard that the
bike was stuck into the back of the
landing. He suffered from a three
day coma, spent three months in
a wheelchair, and underwent six
blood transfusions. He was one of
only three people to ever survive
that kind of injury.
These are just a few of
thousands of horrific injuries that
professional and nonprofessional
athletes alike face. They occur
without warning and destroy the
careers of many.

Talk about the NBA strike
has been everywhere the last
two months. The NBA players
and owners have been tugging
and pulling about this problem
nonstop; the owners claim they
can no longer pay for the facilities
and need to cut the player’s
pay. The players are saying 3.8
billion dollars in sales shouldn’t
be bankrupting
anyone.
On October
9-10, the players
and
owners
bickered
for
almost
twelve
hours regarding
the
multimillion
salary
cut annually, but
could not seem to
settle anything.
For only the second time in NBA
history, the first two weeks of
basketball has been canceled. So
far over 100 games have been
canceled and additional are at
risk.
The
National
Basketball
Players Association (NBPA)
claims they will not budge unless
an equal attempt is made to satisfy
them.
The NBA players are not
permitted to practice or participate
in any activity not open to the
public. This also means they
can’t watch the U.S team practice
or compete in university games.
Any violation of this rule will
cause a large fine to the players
and possible loss of draft picks.
Fans all over the country are
devastated. Many have said they
are tired of the bickering and
wish they would just get over it
and settle something already!
Other fans say they will refuse
to watch this year even when the
season starts back up again. One
Portlander stated that he feels the
NBA has “no regard” for their
fans and are just being greedy.
Both sides have a lot to say.
The player’s union is blaming
the
owner’s
mismanagement
for the huge
money
loss,
while the owners
say
that
to
keep the NBA
alive the cuts
are
necessary.
Maybe both sides
are correct in
their minds, but
right now other
people are suffering while they
bicker over two million dollars.
Hundreds
of
stadium
employees are without jobs now,
the basketball players are making
no money, and thousands of fans
are craving basketball to be back
on TV. It is also affecting small
businesses that rely on hungry
NBA fans who want to sit back
and eat a burger while watching
the games. But without the games,
there are no fans to watch. An
economic study states that over
50 million dollars will be lost in
strong NBA cities like Portland.
Luckily for ticket hoarders, the
NBA will be giving them a refund
for any canceled games. However,
this means even more money lost
by the NBA.
Crazy career ending and life threatening injuries
his fibula snapped and his ankle
dislocated hideously. Even worse,
his momentum forced him to run
on the stump of his leg while his
foot stuck out to the side.
On February 8, 2007, figure
skater Jessica Dube was clipped
by the skate of her skating
partner, Bryce Davison. While
spinning with their legs extended,
Davison’s skate swung too close
to Dube’s face, slicing her left
cheek and nose open.

The National Football League
season is well underway. After
watching week eight, many
surprising outcomes have arisen.
Close to home, the Seattle
Seahawks are struggling with
a record of 2-5. Even with such
a record, they are second in the
NFC West. They are second
behind the San Francisco 49ers
who hold a record of 6-1 (one of
those wins being an upset beating
the previously undefeated Detroit
Lions).
In other leagues: the New
York Giants are leading the NFC
East (5-2 record), the Green Bay
Packers dominate the NFC North
(7-0), the New Orleans Saints
lead the NFC South (5-3), and
the 49ers are top of the NFC
West (6-1). In the AFC: the New
England Patriots and the Buffalo
Bills share first in the AFC East
(5-2), the Pittsburgh Steelers are
the top of the AFC North (6-2),
Houston’s Texans barely hold the
top of the AFC South (5-3), and
the Chargers, Kansas City Chiefs,
and Oakland Raiders share on top
of the AFC West (4-3).
Even this early in the season,
predictions are being made as to
who will win Super Bowl XLVI.
Before the 2011-2012 season,
a majority of predictions were
supporting either the Packers or
the Philadelphia Eagles. Now that
week 7 of the season has passed,
hopes for the Eagles to make it
that far are quickly fading with a
3-4 record. However, hope for the
Packers is becoming more solid.
After watching week eight, the
Packers have a perfect 7-0 record.
Last year, the Packers had a strong
team and, this year, some injured
players have returned to increase
capabilities of the team.

The Portland Timbers soccer
team is currently ranked sixth
in the Western Conference
standings. They are eleventh in
the overall standings. They have
won 11 games, tied 7 games,
and lost 13 games. There are still
three more regular season games;
one of them is at home and two
of them are away. The Portland
Timbers’ opening game in their
new stadium was on April 14,
2011, against the Chicago Fire.
The rainy Oregon weather didn’t
dampen any of the fans’ or the
players’ spirits. They rolled past
the Fire, with a 4-2 win. On May
14, 2011, the Portland Timbers
battled their rival team, the Seattle
Sounders, in Seattle, Washington.
The score ended up being tied.
On August 3, 2011, the Timbers
played the Los Angeles Galaxy at
home in JELD-WEN Field. The
Timbers pulled out with a 3-0
victory.
One big upset was when the
Timbers played FC Dallas in
Frisco, Texas. The Timbers lost
the game, with the score being
0-4. On October 14th, 2011, the
Timbers played Houston at home,
but lost, 0-2. They tied with the
D.C. United and Real Salt Lake,
but that wasn’t enough to get
them into the 2011 MLS (Major
League Soccer) Finals.
The 2011 MLB (Major
League
Baseball)
season
ended on September 28, 2011.
The defending World Series
champions, the San Francisco
Giants, were eliminated from
postseason contention. Four
teams from the American League
made it to the playoffs. They were
the Tampa Bay Rays, the Detroit
Tigers, the Texas Rangers, and
the New York Yankees. Four
teams from the National League
made it to the playoffs also. They
were the St. Louis Cardinals,
the Arizona Diamondbacks,
the Milwaukee Brewers, and
the Philadelphia Phillies. In the
Division Series, the Yankees and
the Tigers went head-to-head,
ending in a Tiger victory of 3-2.
The Rangers and the Rays went
up against one another, resulting
in Ranger win of 3-1. The Phillies
lost to the Cardinals, with a score
of 2-3. Then the Brewers claimed
a victory over the Diamondbacks
with a 3-2 win. The World Series
did not take place until October
19, 2011 and ended around
October 28. The two teams that
went head-to-head against each
other in the World Series were
the Texas Rangers and the St.
Louis Cardinals. The two teams
played well, and it all came down
to Game 7. The 2011 MLB World
Champions are the St. Louis
Cardinals.

Thanksgiving- what comes to
mind? Perhaps delicious mashed
potatoes with gravy, sweet
candied yams, and a mouthwatering turkey. How about why
people celebrate it?
The Pilgrims weren’t the
first to have a “Thanksgiving.”
Virginia had these kinds of
celebrations as early as 1607,
but the Thanksgiving known
today was America’s first official
festival, lasting three days. The
Pilgrims started this festival in
honor of their Indian companions
helping them survive in the New
World.
The Thanksgiving families
celebrate today has become a time
where everyone can get together
and enjoy a nice, big dinner. For
some, there are special traditions
that are practiced. Traditions such
as playing football, participating
in the Thanksgiving Day Parade,
volunteering at certain homeless
shelters, or, if you are in South
Carolina, holding a “blessings of
the hounds” ritual. This tradition
marks the start of the annual
fox-hunt held on Thanksgiving
morning. All the hunters dress in
formal attire of scarlet coats, top
hats, and polished boots and wait
for the hunt to begin.
Some families just kick back at
a relative’s house for a delicious
feast containing all their favorite
foods and catch up on what is
going on in each other’s lives.
For others, the dinner does not
exactly go as planned; turkeys
get half cooked and there is the
one relative who should not
be allowed anywhere near the
kitchen. Then, there are always
stories about people going out and
hunting their own turkeys. A few
years ago in a secluded wooded
area in the state of Montana one
couple decided that they wanted
to go out and shoot their own
turkey for Thanksgiving. What
they didn’t know was that turkeys
can be aggressive. The woman
began to grow impatient when no
turkeys would answer their calls.
Little did she know that a turkey
was right behind her. When she
took a step back, she stepped on
its feathers which did not make
the bird very happy. It began to
chase her in the grass. The man
finally shot the bird and took it
home. The woman, however, has
been afraid of turkeys ever since.
