Montreal, Quebec Salt Lake City, Utah 2010 Outlook This year’s CSI baseball team will look to depth as key strength for the 2010 season There is one thing CSI head coach Boomer Walker knows about this year’s squad - they are inexperienced but talented. Only one player returns with significant experience in the field. Several pitchers return but didn’t carry the burden of being one of the four-rotation starters last season. Still, eight return from a team that finished second in the Region 18 Tournament and advanced to the district playoff. And all eight contributed at some point in their freshmen year. Add to them two sophomore transfers and Walker knows he has leadership. The experience will come. “I am excited to watch this group grow,” Walker said. “We have added depth to the pitching staff and should have great defense.” Anchoring the returners in the infield is Tanner Craswell. Craswell started in 56 of the Eagles 58 games as a freshman at shortstop. He is joined by Oregon State sophomore transfer Michael Wesner as the only other second-year player in the infield. Walker will look to freshmen Ryan Cooperstone (6-1 California), Blake Lively (6-1 Washington), Brock Alexander (6-0 California), JC Paquin (6-2 Canada) and Vincent Giron (6-2 Utah) to shore up the infield. Sophomore Oregon State transfer Kyle Beverley also will be able to play infield for CSI and outfield. At catcher, returner Remington Pullin (5-11 Idaho) and freshman Parker Morin (5-11 Utah) will see the most time behind the plate. Utah freshman Jean-Guy Bilodeau (6-3) also catches and will give the Eagle depth at that position as well as the designated hitter spot. The Golden Eagles have experience in the outfield with the return of Ryan Lay (5-9 California), Dale Anderson (6-1 Canada) and Lionel Morrill (6-4 Canada). Add to them Beverley and freshman DJ Nelson and CSI will be able to mix it up depending on who is swinging the bat. Pitchers Preston Olson (6-6 Utah), Casey Lish (6-0 Idaho), and Trey Mohammed (6-4 California) all return on the mound for CSI. Combined they had 47 appearances their first season as Golden Eagles. They will be joined by freshmen Mike Renner (5-10 California), Tyler Duffin (6-2 Utah), Tyler Vavra (6-0 Canada), Travis Huber (6-3 Utah), Caleb Olson (6-3 Utah), Chris Kerns (6-0 Idaho), and 5-9 Phillip Valos (California). CSI will start its season on the road in Arizona and Henderson, Nev. for non-league play before jumping into conference play against some of the best teams in the nation. “The league is way up from what it’s been,” Walker said. “It’s crazy. Western Nevada is the Region 18 defending champion and College of Southern Nevada comes in as the top-ranked team in the nation.” Salt Lake is always tough and Eastern Utah features a lot of sophomores. “Our inexperience early will be our players lack of knowledge of our league,” Walker said. “Once we see everyone once, I expect us to be right in the battle.” 4 2010 Outlook 5 Boomer Walker 6th Season Head Coach It was only natural that Boomer Walker would someday wear a coach’s cap at Southern Idaho. After assisting the Golden Eagles for nine years Boomer took over as head coach in 2004. In those five years, Boomer has amassed a 174 wins and just 117 losses. In 2006 and 2007, the Golden Eagles battled for the regular season championship going into the final weekend of play. In 2009, The Golden Eagles played in the Region 18 Championship and advanced to the district playoff. Boomer was barely walking when his dad, former head coach Skip Walker, started coaching at CSI. And Boomer has always been a part of the program. He was a 12-year-old bat boy when he witnessed the Golden Eagles’ national championship in 1984. Boomer starred for Twin Falls High School, leading the Bruins to a state championship in 1988. Then, he wore the gold and black himself when he played at Southern Idaho from 1989 to 1992, winning all-region honors as a shortstop in 1992. After playing at Northeast Louisiana University, Boomer worked as a student assistant in 1995, gaining valuable coaching experience. In 1996, Boomer returned to Southern Idaho to re-unite with his father. The two still work together but Boomer is the head coach and Skip continues as a hitting instructor. Boomer said it doesn’t feel much different to be in the head coach’s shoes instead of assisting. “I’ve been around here forever so it doesn’t feel any different,” Walker said. “I still feel pressure to keep this program on top, but not any more pressure than before. I’m not naive to think I can accomplish what my dad did.” As far as changes in the program, Boomer said they are very subtle. “My overall philosophy of CSI Baseball is the same. People who have been around the program for a long time won’t see a whole lot of changes,” he said. “I would say the only difference is that my approach is not as old school.” When Boomer isn’t coaching from the dugout, he enjoys waterskiing and playing softball. Boomer and his wife Maria have two boys - Tai Ripken and Treyson. 6 Kris Welker 1st Season AssistantCoach Kris Welker begins his first season as an assistant baseball coach with the Golden Eagles. “Kris is a great addition to the CSI baseball staff,” said CSI head coach Boomer Walker. “He understands what it means to be a Golden Eagle and brings enthusiasm, energy and knowledge of what it takes to win in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.” Welker played at CSI from 2001 to 2003, earning first team all-region honors in 2003 as a catcher. From CSI, Welker transferred to the University of Iowa where he was named third team all Big Ten and University of Iowa MVP in 2005. The same year, he was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 41st round, earning Bristol White Sox MVP honors. He played two years in the White Sox organization before becoming the first base coach for the Clinton Lumber Kings (Texas Rangers organization) in 2007. Since 2007, Welker has been a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Iowa. He and his wife Jennifer recently moved back to Twin Falls to accept the assistant job at CSI to work with pitchers and catchers as well as recruiting. “ Kris brings energy and enthusiam to our program. He works extremely hard and the players respond well to him. He has turned our pitching into our strength.” - Boomer Walker 7 Skip Walker 37th Season AssistantCoach Golden Eagle baseball fans know him as Skip. People who spend a lot of time around him are familiar with the phrases “jeezo-peezo,” “mentality,” and a few others too colorful to print here. His players, both former and current, can recite the five P’s - “proper planning prevents poor procedure.” But it’s the rich history Jim Walker has brought to the CSI program that defines who he is. Skip Walker is a legend at CSI. Not only was Walker inducted into the CSI Athletic Hall of Fame this year, but Frontier Field was officially named the James F. “Skip” Walker baseball field. In his 31 years as a head coach at CSI, Walker planted the trees, built the clubhouse and played a major role in creating one of the top five JUCO fields in the country. Along the way, he has cultivated baseball players, winning 12 region titles, competing in eight JUCO World Series and winning a national championship in 1984, taking third in 1988, fourth in 1986 and fifth in 1975. Retiring from head coaching duties in 2004, Skip continues to be a part of CSI baseball as an assistant. Walker is married to his wife Julene. They have a daughter Carly and a son, Boomer, who is the Golden Eagles head coach. “I’m the luckiest guy in the country. I have an offensive assistant that has won more than 1100 games in his career. I’m in a great, great situation. He can now use his knowledge to help the players without worrying about all the other stuff.” Boomer Walker on having his dad and former head coach Skip Walker as an assistant. 8 Volunteer Assistant Coach Gene Ritchie Volunteer Assistant Coach “Our program couldn’t survive without Geno. He is the first one at the field each day and the last one to leave. He is the hardest working retired person in the country.” - Coach Walker On the Air Listen to all the action live on 1450 AM with Ken Simmons (left) and Jonathan Drew (right). Athletic Director Joel Bate Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate took over Golden Eagle Athletic Director responsibilities in January 2007. Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on the CSI campus in 1993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with studentathletes and coaches on a daily basis. Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic AllAmericans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors. Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place state finishes. Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the University of Idaho in 1986. Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls. 36 Behind the Scenes Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. William May Team Physician Dr. Thad Scholes Team Physician Dr. Mark McKain Physical Therapist Julie Ellis Chiropractor Dr. Dave Long Athletic Trainer Richard Bingham Sports Information Director Karen Baumert 37 Administrative Assistant Ginger Nukaya Thanks to our marathon game donors ($100 or more) $100 - $200 Brice Beck Donald Renner G.
