This year, we are excited to explore Why Foreign Policy Matters, through political, economic, and cultural lenses. We hear the term “foreign policy” every day, but rarely take the time to explore how it impacts our everyday lives, including our safety and security, financial stability, and health and well-being. Today, we have brought together distinguished speakers from the government, business, finance, and media sectors to provide their perspectives on the impact of foreign policy, as well as their unique insights on leadership in a dynamic and competitive global market. Through this cross-sector approach, we hope to better understand some of the serious issues which are facing the world today, and provide you, our valued audience, with deeper insights into how to gain and maintain success on an international scale. The findings of the Gallup Global Report: Where The Great Jobs Are will set the stage for today’s discussions. Developed by Gallup, this report offers a first look at the real jobs situation in 138 countries, revealing where the good – and great – jobs are, and where the greatest deficits remain. Unlike other surveys that use indicators such as GDP, household income, and unemployment data to make predictions about countries, this unique survey captures how people “feel” about their job situation and their future. BLINKEN Deputy Secretary of State, United States Department of State Antony J. Blinken was confirmed by the United States Senate as Deputy Secretary of State on December 16, 2014. He was sworn in by Secretary Kerry on January 9, 2015. Mr. Blinken has held senior foreign policy positions in two administrations over two decades. He most recently served as Assistant to the President and Principal Deputy National Security Advisor. In that capacity, he chaired the inter-agency Deputies Committee, the administration’s principal forum for formulating foreign policy. During the first term of the Obama Administration, he was Deputy Assistant to the President and National Security Advisor to the Vice President. Mr. Blinken served for six years on Capitol Hill (2002 – 2008) as Democratic Staff Director for the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Mr. Blinken was a member of President Clinton’s National Security Council staff at the White House from 1994 to 2001. From 1999 to 2001, he was Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for European Affairs – President Clinton’s principal advisor for relations with the countries of Europe, the European Union and NATO. From 1994 through 1998, Mr. Blinken was Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Speechwriting and then Strategic Planning, overseeing foreign policy planning, communications and speechwriting and serving as President Clinton’s chief foreign policy speechwriter. Mr. Blinken began his government service at the State Department where, from 1993 to 1994, he served as Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs. After leaving the Clinton Administration, he was a Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies between 2001 and 2002. Prior to joining the Clinton Administration, Mr. Blinken practiced law in New York and Paris. He has been a reporter for The New Republic magazine and has written about foreign policy for numerous publications including The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine and Foreign Affairs. He is the author of Ally Versus Ally: America, Europe and the Siberian Pipeline Crisis (Praeger, 1987). He appears frequently on cable and network television on behalf of the Obama Administration. Mr. Blinken attended grade school and high school in Paris, France where he received a French Baccalaureat degree with high honors. He is a graduate of Harvard College Magna cum Laude and Columbia Law School. 7 SUMMIT SPEAKERS JON CLIFTON Managing Director, Gallup Global Analytics Jon Clifton is Managing Director of Gallup’s Global Analytics and a member of the company’s Executive Committee. He is responsible for the company’s global government work and the Gallup World Poll, an ongoing study conducted in more than 160 countries. He is also a member of the Public Release Committee, the governance board that oversees and maintains Gallup’s public release standards for data, research and methodology. Jon is a nonresident Senior Fellow at Baylor University’s Institute for Studies of Religion, and he serves on the board of directors of the Meridian International Center and of StreetWise Partners. He received a bachelor’s degree in political science and history from the University of Michigan and a juris doctorate in international law from the University of Nebraska. He lives and works in Washington, D.C. SHAWN DONNAN World Trade Editor, Financial Times Shawn Donnan moved from London to Washington as the Financial Times’ (FT) world trade editor, leading FT’s global coverage of trade and development. He also covers issues related to globalization; reports on the International Monetary Fund and World Bank; and contributes to coverage of the U.S. economy. Mr. Donnan was previously World News Editor, after being promoted from Deputy World News Editor in June 2010. Prior to that, he was the Asia World News Editor and the Asia International Company News page editor based in Hong Kong. He was also FT’s Indonesia correspondent based in Jakarta. He joined FT in November 1999 in Sydney, Australia. Prior to joining FT, Mr. Donnan worked as a staff writer for the Associated Press in the U.S. and as a Sydney-based reporter for Agence France-Presse. Besides FT his work has appeared in major newspapers worldwide, including the South China Morning Post, the Los Angeles Times and Christian Science Monitor. Mr. Donnan graduated from Boston University, majoring in International Relations. 8 SUMMIT SPEAKERS CONGRESSMAN ELIOT L. ENGEL Ranking Member, House Foreign Affairs Committee Congressman Engel is the Ranking Member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He also serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee including the Subcommittee on Health, and the Subcommittee on Energy and Power. He is the founder and Co-Chair of the House Oil and National Security Caucus, which is seeking clean, energy efficient alternatives to America’s over-reliance on oil. He is also a member of the Democratic Task Force on Health and serves on the Commission on Human Rights. Congressman Engel has also been a leader in global health, promoting an improved reauthorization of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Assistance (PEPFAR). Within the PEPFAR bill (P.L. 110-293), Congressman Engel successfully included his bill, the Stop Tuberculosis (TB) Now Act. This measure provides increased U.S. support for international TB control activities and promotes research to develop new drugs, diagnostics, and vaccines. Congressman Engel is the author of the Syria Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2003, which successfully sparked international pressure on Syria to withdraw from Lebanon, and sponsored a key resolution recognizing Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel. He is a leader in the House of Representatives on U.S. policy toward Latin American and the Caribbean. In addition, he has written important laws relating to Albania and Kosovo, Cyprus, Irish affairs, and is co-author of the Harkin-Engel Protocol, which addresses the child slave labor in the cocoa fields of Africa. Congressman Engel was born in the Bronx on February 18, 1947. He grew up in a city housing project and attended New York City public schools. In 1969, he graduated from Hunter-Lehman College with a B.A. in History and received a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1973 from Herbert H. Lehman College of the City University of New York. In 1987, Congressman Engel received a law degree from New York Law School. For twelve years prior to his election to Congress, he served in the New York State Assembly (1977-1988), where he chaired the Committee on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, as well as the Subcommittee on Mitchell-Lama Housing. Prior to that, he was a teacher and guidance counselor in the New York City public school system. A lifelong resident of the Bronx, Congressman Engel is married to Pat Engel. They have three children. 9 SUMMIT SPEAKERS THE HONORABLE ALONZO L. FULGHAM Vice President, Strategy and Sustainable International Development, CH2M Hill Alonzo L. Fulgham joined CH2M Hill’s Environmental Services Business Group (ESBG) in June 2012 as Vice President, Strategy and Sustainable International Development. His experience in global strategic planning, business development, project design, and business operations includes more than 20 years with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), where, after serving as the Agency’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Fulgham was appointed by President Obama as Acting Administrator in January 2009. In this role, Mr. Fulgham managed a diverse, $15 billion portfolio in more than 88 countries, developing solutions to address a broad range of challenges including: climate change resiliency and remediation; food security and land management; health access and continued HIV/AIDS response; and sustainable economic development in emerging economies and fragile states. Following USAID, Mr. Fulgham joined International Relief and Development (IRD) as Vice President and led the global strategy and operations for securing non-USG business in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Under the “3D” approach to national security—Diplomacy, Development, and Defense—U.S. leaders including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, and former USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah have acknowledged that tomorrow’s global threat reduction and security challenges will demand more resources and more strategic focus for U.S. diplomacy and development as key partners alongside defense. Mr. Fulgham holds an M.A. in National Security Strategy and Resource Management from the National Defense University and a B.A. in Business and Economics from Fisk University. He serves on the Board of Directors for Meridian International Center, the Society for International Development (SID), Malaria No More, GRM International, the Futures Group, Women Thrive Worldwide, and the University of Michigan’s William Davidson Institute. A member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Mr. Fulgham has worked and lived overseas in countries including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Jordan, Montenegro, Serbia, and Swaziland. He began his career as a Peace Corps volunteer in Haiti. 10 SUMMIT SPEAKERS ANDREW F. GELFUSO Vice President of Global Business Development, Office of Trade Promotion, Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center Andrew F. Gelfuso is Vice-President at Trade Center Management Associates (TCMA), a privately held, wholly owned subsidiary of the Bostonbased Drew Company. TCMA serves as the full service, property management company for the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. This facility is also designated as the official World Trade Center of Washington, DC, which is part of the global network of the Centers with affiliates in over 90 countries around the world. As Vice-President, Mr. Gelfuso leads the global mission of the Center while focusing on international business development, program promotion, business matchmaking, outreach, trade counseling, strategic partnerships, government, and diplomatic relations. Under Mr. Gelfuso’s leadership, the Office for Trade Promotion is responsible for driving the Congressional mandate of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center and for positioning the Center to be Washington’s focal point for a wide array of international trade, cultural, and educational programming. Mr. Gelfuso graduated in 1997 from Hobart College in Geneva, New York, with a degree in Political Science. He earned his MBA with a concentration in International Business in 2001 from Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. In the spring of 1996, he earned a certificate from Vietnam National University in Vietnamese. Mr. Gelfuso has authored articles on international trade which have been published in several newspapers. He serves on the board of the Embassy Series, the Corporate Committee for the National Trust for the Mall, the District Export Council of DC/ VA (DEC), and is an advisor on the Administration’s Industry Trade Advisory Committee (ITAC) appointed by the Secretary of Commerce. 11 SUMMIT SPEAKERS THE HONORABLE CARLOS M. GUTIERREZ Chair, Albright Stonebridge Group Chairman, Meridian International Center Carlos Gutierrez is Vice Chair of Albright Stonebridge Group (ASG), bringing unparalleled international trade and investment expertise and management talents to the firm. He served as the U.S. Secretary of Commerce from 2005 to 2009 under President George W. Bush, and joined ASG from Citi, where he served as Vice Chairman of the Institutional Clients Group and a member of the Senior Strategic Advisory Group. His background adds to the firm’s already deep understanding of the different languages of business, government and civil society, and where they intersect. His global business insights, international expertise, and integrity add value for clients worldwide in the practice of commercial diplomacy. Secretary Gutierrez was born in Havana, Cuba. He joined the Bush Administration in 2005 after spending nearly 30 years with Kellogg Company, a global manufacturer and marketer of well-known food brands, where he started as a sales representative in Mexico City. After assignments in Latin America, Canada, Asia, and the United States, he became President and Chief Executive Officer in 1999 — the youngest CEO in the company’s 100-year history. In April 2000, he was named Chairman of the Board of Kellogg Company. As the 35th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Secretary Gutierrez was responsible for heading a Cabinet agency with almost 40,000 employees and a $6.5 billion budget focused on promoting American business at home and abroad. During his tenure as Secretary, he worked with foreign government and business leaders to advance economic relationships, enhance trade, and promote U.S. exports. Secretary Gutierrez also played a key role in the passage of landmark free trade agreements that strip away trade barriers, expand export opportunities, and boost global investment. Secretary Gutierrez is chairman of Republicans for Immigration Reform, the political action group that he co-founded in 2012. He also serves as a National Trustee at the University of Miami and as a visiting scholar at the University’s Institute for Cuban and Cuban American Studies. He is a trustee on the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and a Member of the Board of the U.S.-Mexico Foundation. He also sits on the boards of the Occidental Petroleum Corporation and Met Life, Inc. 12 SUMMIT SPEAKERS THE HONORABLE STUART W. HOLLIDAY President and CEO, Meridian International Center Before coming to Meridian, Ambassador Stuart Holliday served as United States Ambassador for Special Political Affairs at the United Nations (2003-2005), after his nomination by the President and confirmation by the Senate. Ambassador Holliday’s primary duties involved representing the United States on issues in the U.N. Security Council. This included responsibility for U.S. policy on U.N. Peacekeeping, Sanctions, and Counterterrorism programs. Prior to serving at the United Nations, he was Coordinator (Assistant Secretary) of the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of International Information Programs and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs. From 2000 to 2001, he was Special Assistant to the President and Associate Director of Presidential Personnel at the White House. At the White House, he advised the President on all National Security appointments including the Defense Department, State Department, the Veterans Department, FEMA, NASA, OPIC, Peace Corps, USAID and Ambassadorships. Following the attacks of September 11, Ambassador Holliday was tasked by the President’s Chief of Staff to work with government agencies to staff the first Office of Homeland Security at the White House. From 1998 to 2000, he served as Policy Advisor to then Governor of Texas. He has also served as Executive Director of the Dallas Council on World Affairs, and as Regional Director for North Africa, the Middle East and Turkey at the International Republican Institute (IRI) where he worked on political reform and elections. Ambassador Holliday served on active and reserve duty as an Officer in the United States Navy (Intelligence) from 1988 until 1995 and was recalled to active duty for Operation Desert Storm. He is a recipient of the Joint Service Commendation Medal and other awards. He obtained his B.S.F.S. (International Affairs) from Georgetown University and his M.A. (International Affairs) from the London School of Economics and Political Science. 13 SUMMIT SPEAKERS DEE DEE MYERS Executive Vice President, Worldwide Corporate Communications and Public Affairs, Warner Bros. Dee Dee Myers became Executive Vice President, Worldwide Corporate Communications and Public Affairs for Warner Bros. in September 2014. In this role, she oversees all of the company’s corporate communications strategies and activities on a global basis, including media relations, public positioning, executive communications, corporate responsibility and philanthropy. Prior to joining Warner Bros., Ms. Myers most recently served as Managing Director of the Glover Park Group, where she used her years of experience in politics and media to counsel clients on strategic and crisis communications, reputation management, and integrated marketing. Ms. Myers served as White House Press Secretary during President Bill Clinton’s first term and was the first woman to hold the position. After leaving the White House, she worked as a political analyst, commentator and writer as well as a contributing editor to Vanity Fair. She is the author of The New York Times best-selling book Why Women Should Rule the World. She also co-hosted the CNBC political talk show “Equal Time” and served as a consultant on Warner Bros. Television’s Emmy Award-winning drama series “The West Wing.” Before joining the Clinton presidential campaign in 1991, Ms. Myers worked on a number of local, state, and national campaigns. She served as press secretary for Dianne Feinstein in her 1990 bid for governor and worked on the presidential campaigns of Governor Michael S. Dukakis and Vice President Walter F. Mondale. She also worked on the staffs of Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley and California State Senator Art Torres. Ms. Myers is a graduate of Santa Clara University in California. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Todd S. Purdum, a senior writer for Politico and a contributing editor to Vanity Fair, and their children. 14 SUMMIT SPEAKERS JAMES QUINCEY President and Chief Operating Officer, The CocaCola Company James Quincey is President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of The Coca-Cola Company. In this role, he has responsibility for all of the Company’s operating units worldwide. Before being named President and COO, from 2013-2015, Mr. Quincey served as President of The Coca-Cola Company’s Europe Group, which comprises 38 countries, including the Member States of the European Union, the European Free Trade Association countries, and the Balkans. Under Mr. Quincey’s leadership, the Europe Group, the Company’s most profitable operating group, strategically expanded its brand portfolio and improved execution across the geography. These actions helped drive solid topline growth and expanded the company’s leading market share position in total nonalcoholic ready-to-drink (NARTD) beverages despite the volatile and prolonged macroeconomic challenges in the region. Mr. Quincey also played an instrumental role in leading the recently announced proposed merger of Coca-Cola Enterprises, Coca-Cola Iberian Partners and CocaCola Erfrischungsgetranke AG to form Coca-Cola European Partners Plc., in what will become the world’s largest independent Coca-Cola bottler based on net revenues. Prior to his role as head of the Europe Group, Mr. Quincey served as President of the Northwest Europe & Nordics Business Unit (NWEN) from 2008 to 2012. Among his many accomplishments during this time was his leadership of the acquisition of Innocent Juice in 2009. Innocent is now sold in more than 14 countries and is well on its way to becoming one of the Company’s billion-dollar brands. From 2005 to 2008, Mr. Quincey was President of the Mexico Division. During his tenure in Mexico, he grew market share for brand Coca-Cola and expanded the Company’s portfolio with the re-launch of Coca-Cola Zero and the acquisition of Jugos de Valle, one of the Company’s 20 brands that generate more than a billion dollars in annual revenue, and which is now sold in 16 countries. Mr. Quincey joined the Company in Atlanta in 1996 as Director, Learning Strategy for the Latin America Group, and went on to serve in a series of operational roles of increased responsibility in Latin America, leading to his appointment as President of the South Latin Division in 2003. During his time in South Latin, Mr. Quincey was instrumental in developing and executing a successful brand, pack, price and channel strategy, which has now been replicated in various forms throughout Coca-Cola’s global system. Prior to joining Coca-Cola, he was a Partner in strategy consulting at The Kalchas Group, a spin off from Bain & Company and McKinsey. Mr. Quincey, who is bilingual in English and Spanish, received a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Liverpool. He is based in Atlanta. 15 SUMMIT SPEAKERS CONGRESSMAN ED ROYCE Chairman, House Foreign Affairs Committee U.S. Representative Ed Royce (R) is serving his twelfth term in Congress and represents California’s 39th District, based in Orange, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino Counties. Congressman Royce’s priorities in Congress are: addressing our national debt, protecting our homeland, eliminating porkbarrel spending, fighting crime and supporting victims of crime, strengthening education for all students, spurring job creation and strengthening Social Security and Medicare. Congressman Royce has a long history of public service. In 1982, he was elected to the California State Senate where he began his fight for victim’s rights. He authored the nation’s first anti-stalker law and versions of his bill have been adopted in all 50 states. For the 114th Congress, Congressman Royce was selected to be Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Congressman Royce has served on the Committee since entering Congress in 1993. Immediately prior to becoming Chairman of the Committee, he served as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade and a member of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific. As a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, he sits on two Subcommittees: Capital Markets and Government Sponsored Enterprises, and Insurance and Housing. Congressman Royce has served on the conference committees for some of the most significant legislation in the financial services arena. For more than a decade, Congressman Royce has called for a stronger federal regulator to limit Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac’s excessive risk taking at the expense of taxpayers. In 2003, he was the first member of Congress to write legislation calling for a single regulator under the Treasury Department for the three housing government sponsored enterprises: Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the twelve Federal Home Loan Banks. Congressman Royce has consistently earned honors and awards from the National Taxpayers Union, Citizens Against Government Waste, National Federation of Independent Businesses, Watchdogs of the Treasury, Americans for Tax Reform, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, United Seniors Association, 60 Plus, American Share Holders Association, Citizens for a Sound Economy and the Small Business Survival Committee. A California native, he is a graduate of California State University, Fullerton, School of Business Administration. Prior to entering public service, his professional background includes experience as a small business owner, a controller, a capital projects manager, and a corporate tax manager for a Southern California company. Congressman Royce and his wife, Marie, have been married for 29 years. 16 SUMMIT SPEAKERS DR. CURTIS SANDBERG Senior Vice President, Arts and Cultural Programs, Meridian International Center Dr. Curtis Sandberg serves as Meridian’s Senior Vice President for Arts and Cultural Programs. He is responsible for developing and managing exhibitions and other cultural partnerships presented by Meridian International Center. He also directs the Meridian Traveling Exhibition Service that takes Meridianorganized exhibits around the United States and the world, fostering connections with institutional and governmental partners in host communities. Dr. Sandberg holds a B.A. degree in classical archaeology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in anthropology from Harvard University. He has had extensive museum experience in the United States, Europe, and Asia, working in a variety of fields, including research, curatorial, collections oversight, catalogue organization, and archival management. He has been involved in a number of archaeological projects in the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. He has taught at Harvard University and at the John Burroughs School, Saint Louis, Missouri, and has lectured at conferences, as well as at museums, diplomatic missions, and cultural organizations in the United States and abroad. Dr. Sandberg was a Rotary International Fellow, a Fulbright-Hayes Fellow, a Harvard Sinclair-Kennedy Fellow, and a Whiting Fellow. 17 SUMMIT SPEAKERS ANTHONY WELTERS Executive Chairman, BlackIvy Group, LLC Anthony Welters is currently Executive Chairman of the BlackIvy Group, LLC and Senior Adviser to the Office of the CEO of UnitedHealth Group (UHG), which serves more than 100 million people worldwide through its health and well-being companies. Prior to this appointment, he was Executive Vice President and a Member of the Office of the CEO of UnitedHealth Group. Mr. Welters previously led UHG’s Public and Senior Markets Group. Mr. Welters joined UHG upon its acquisition of AmeriChoice, a health care company he founded in 1989. Mr. Welters invested early in oil leases in the Bakken Formation and established Spotted Hawk, LLC, his own shale gas exploration and production company. Recognizing the growing need for physical and technical infrastructure, and new market opportunities, outside the U.S. he has recently turned his focus to Sub-Saharan Africa where BlackIvy Group builds and grows infrastructure businesses in Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania. Mr. Welters is a member of the boards of Loews Corporation, West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc., and C.R. Bard, Inc. He is Trustee Emeritus of the Morehouse School of Medicine Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Board of New York University School of Law, as well as Vice Chairman of the Board of New York University and a Trustee of NYU Langone Medical Center. He was appointed by the President to the Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where he serves as Chairman of the Finance Committee. Mr. Welters is a founding member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. He is a recipient of a Horatio Alger Award, awarded to those who have overcome humble beginnings and adversity to achieve success and contribute to society, and serves on the board of that charitable organization as well. Mr. Welters is also a member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the oldest learned societies in the country. Mr. Welters and his wife Beatrice are also recipients of the Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service, in recognition of their long-standing commitment to philanthropy. Mr. Welters was born and raised in the New York City neighborhoods of Harlem and Bedford Stuyvesant. He earned a BA in economics from Manhattanville College and a JD from New York University School of Law. Mr. Welters is a member of the Bars of New York and the District of Columbia. 18 SUMMIT SPEAKERS THE HONORABLE BEATRICE WILKINSON WELTERS Former United States Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago Beatrice Wilkinson Welters has a strong record of service to her country and her community, with a special focus on providing opportunities to underserved young people. She served as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago from May 2010 through November 2012 where her primary mission was to ensure that her host country remained committed to promote citizen safety and reduce illicit trafficking throughout the region. During her term as Ambassador, she also facilitated the first performance by the National Symphony Orchestra in a Caribbean nation. Amb. Welters’ passion for helping young people from under-resourced and challenging environments is carried out through the AnBryce Foundation, which she founded with her husband in 1995. One of their programs, Camp Dogwood Summer Academy, is a tuition free camp that welcomes over 100 young campers each summer, providing educational and personal development programs. In 1998, the AnBryce Scholars Program was created at the New York University School of Law. This program assists students of high merit who come from backgrounds of severe economic disadvantage and are the first in their families to attend graduate school. The program also provides full-tuition scholarships as well as summer employment, mentoring and other enrichment opportunities. In 2012, the AnBryce Scholars Initiative was established at the University of Notre Dame. To date, the programs have enabled nearly 100 young people to obtain their undergraduate or law degrees. Amb. Welters serves on the boards of several distinguished Washington, DC institutions, including the Brookings Institution, and the Maret School. She is also a member of the Board of Visitors at Colin Powell’s School for Civic and Global Leadership at City College of New York. 19 SUMMIT SPEAKERS MILES YOUNG Worldwide Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ogilvy & Mather Miles Young was educated at Bedford School and New College, Oxford. His career in advertising has spanned Lintas, Allen Brady & Marsh and Ogilvy & Mather, which he joined in 1983. Mr. Young was appointed to the Board of Ogilvy & Mather Advertising in London in 1986 and Client Services Director in 1988. In February 1990, he became Managing Director of Ogilvy & Mather Direct in London. He was a Regional Director of Ogilvy & Mather Direct Europe from 1990 to 1995. From 1994 to 1995, he had the additional responsibility of setting up and running the IBM account in Europe which had previously been held by some 40 separate agencies. This included setting up a dedicated service hub in Paris for both advertising and direct marketing. Mr. Young has lectured and written widely on the subject of integrated marketing, a special interest. In September 1995, he moved to Hong Kong to take up the position of Chairman of Ogilvy & Mather Asia Pacific, and served on the Board and Executive Committee of Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide. During this period, Ogilvy & Mather grew significantly in size and market share, and was repeatedly acknowledged as “Agency of the Year” by Media magazine. Mr. Young is cofounder of the Ogilvy-Tsinghua Program for Public Branding, a joint venture with Tsinghua University, Beijing, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Tsinghua School of Journalism. He is also an Economic Consultant to the Jiangsu, China Provincial Government and a visiting Professor at Xiamen University. Mr. Young is Chairman of the U.S. Pakistan Business Council in Washington, DC and a member of the Prime Minister of Turkey’s Investment Advisory Council. He is a member of the Board of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. In addition, he is the Chairman of the American Friends of the Hermione. He assumed the position of CEO of Ogilvy & Mather in January 2009 and Chairman in July 2012.
