Distribution is intended for use only by members of the BMWMCC. Specific details and extent of organization of each ride may vary and are subject to change. Additional organized rides may be announced periodically at club meetings, in the club newsletter or in electronic announcements. Visit the club website for updated information on rides at www.BMWMCC.org. Disclaimer Members and guests participate in these rides at their own discretion and accept all responsibility for risks associated with such rides. Neither the BMW Motorcycle Club of Colorado nor any of its Officers or members shall be held liable for claims or loss including property damage, injury, or death as a result of participation in events appearing in the BMWMCC 2013 Ride Book or any other club event. A rider’s or passenger’s signature may be required on a form of release of all claims and rights before participating in a given ride. Enjoy your motorcycle and have a safe ride! 2 BMWMCC 2013 Ride Book Group Riding Motorcycle Safety Foundation www.msf-usa.org • Arrive prepared and on time with a full gas tank. • Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss the route, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals (see diagrams on MSF website). Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should assess everyone’s riding skills and the group’s riding style. • Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally no more than five to seven riders. If necessary, break the group into smaller sub-groups, each with a lead and sweep rider. • Ride prepared. At least one rider in each group should pack a cell phone, first-aid kit, and full tool kit so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter. The ride leader should carry a cell phone, and should make his cell number known to each rider. • Ride information. The staggered riding formation (see diagram on MSF website) allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A single-file formation is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/ leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed. Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion. If you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so. You don’t want handlebars to get entangled. • Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror. If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so he/she may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this technique, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up. • If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group should have a pre-planned procedure in place to regroup. Don’t break the law or ride beyond your skills to catch up. • For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants. www.BMWMCC.org 3 Letter from the President We are very excited to offer our membership our BMWMCC 2013 Ride Book. This publication is the culmination of many hours of volunteer time not just from our editorial and production staff but from the ride leaders, contributors, and advertisers as well. Without their help, this production, and quite possibly the club as a whole, would not exist. In my 40 years as a motorcyclist and in my second term as President of this club, I find it interesting that, although motorcycling is primarily a solo endeavor, without all the riders, rallies, vendors, journalists and personalities that go with the sport, it certainly would have limited entertainment value. A conundrum indeed, but one easily solved–just go with it! Enjoy the company of your fellow motorcyclists. Although we are all staunch individualists, it does “take a village,” so to speak, to keep it exciting. Thanks to the most dedicated set of volunteers a club President could ever hope for, we have an excellent selection of rides that everyone can enjoy this year. We have added new ideas for some of our standards. The 100k Foot Ride will have new dual sport routes added to keep things interesting; it will again be sponsored by Foothills BMW Motorcycles. The Canyon Mixer is back, having been canceled due to fires last year. This annual ride has a new format and will again be sponsored by Northern Colorado EURO Motorcycles. The Tour of Honor has been added for this year and will be sponsored by BMW of Denver. Our signature rally, the Top O’ The Rockies, has a new team with new ideas to ramp up the fun while keeping costs down for our attendees. We have also added information on our sister clubs in the surrounding states to support their endeavors, and of course we have our club rides every weekend during our brief riding season. In closing, I ask that you support our rides, events, and our advertisers; they are a huge part of this motorcycle community and help make this ride book the quality piece it has become. See ya on the road, Carl Thomte (a.k.a. Roamin Carloski) President BMW Motorcycle Club of Colorado 4 BMWMCC 2013 Ride Book BMWMCC Saturday Morning Rides Red Rocks Grill 415 Bear Creek Avenue, Morrison, CO 80465 Every Saturday morning at 8:00 am in summer months and 8:30 am in winter months (rain, shine, or snow), members meet for breakfast at Red Rocks Grill in Morrison. If weather permits, we ride afterwards. New members, make yourself known–all are welcome! We take up the back area of the restaurant. If no rides have been pre-planned for that day, you can always catch a pick up ride with destinations to be determined that morning. www.BMWMCC.org 5 72 nd March 16, 2013 Daytona 200 Superbike Race The AMA Pro Road Racing season will kick off with the most historic race on the circuit, the 72nd Daytona 200 AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike motorcycle classic. The 57-lap, 200-mile event will serve as the finale for 2013 Daytona 200 Week on Saturday afternoon, March 16, and test riders with a grueling and demanding race on the twists and turns of Daytona International Speedway’s 3.51-mile road course. As a long standing tradition among motorcyclists, we kick off the riding season watching this classic race of champions. Join us for snacks, drinks, camaraderie and race action! Location and time to be determined. Carl Thomte | 303-753-6652 | rcarloski@msn.com 6 BMWMCC 2013 Ride Book March 23, 2013 Vern’s Place Departure 9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison Vern’s Place, located west of the 287 Bypass in LaPort, has been a family tradition of those enjoying the geat outdoors since 1946. The old western style wood exterior, complete with carved grizzly bear pillars, makes it a landmark that is hard to miss. There is a corner store with a gas station and a gift shop, and the other half is the restaurant itself. Great canyon riding there and back! Carl Thomte | 303-753-6652 | rcarloski@msn.com March 30, 2013 Genoa Tower & Museum Departure 9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison In 1934, the Geological Survey reportly confirmed that the Genoa Tower, at it’s peak, is the highest point between Denver and New York City. “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” proved that it was possible to see six states from the tower. The Rock Building, which used to be the cafe, boasts rocks from every state in the United States as well as several from foreign countries. This landmark and museum contains about every knick-knack known to man and is always a popular early season ride. 30121 Frontage Road, Genoa, CO 80818 | 719-763-2309 Carl Thomte | 303-753-6652 | rcarloski@msn.com www.BMWMCC.org 7 March 31, 2013 Death Valley, California Trip Departure 8:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison The Death Valley trip will consume at least 7 days or longer if weather over Vail Pass delays us. The plan is to camp in Death Valley but stay in a cabin at the KOA Campground in Richfield, UT the first night. We will leave Morrison at 8:00 am and ride to Richfield. We will arrive in Death Valley on the 2nd day and stay in the Furnace Creek Campgrounds; we will use this as our base of operations for the next 3 days. What we will do depends on who is going and what they will be riding. There are both dirt and paved roads to ride on. I expect to do some hiking and photography both in early morning and moonlight. I am riding a BMW 1150GS with Tourance Tires. Knobbies are not necessary. You do not need to be an expert dirt rider, and we can provide help and guidance, but some experience is desirable. We will leave Furnace Creek on April 5th (the 6th day out) and head home either via Beatty, NV or Death Valley Junction. Weather conditions may determine the exact route and departure date. We know we all want to ride but it’s still springtime and a bit too early to count on the mountain roads. Instead, how about this: we load a helmet with the names of lots of towns out east. Everyone shows up at Morrison, and at 9:00 am we draw the destination name from the helmet and head out there for lunch. Are you game? Bring your favorite Colorado state map, a cell phone if you have one, and let the adventure begin! Who knows, there might be some Harley’s to pass on the way! Contributions welcome - do you have a favorite town, tourist destination, or restaurant out east, and want to make sure it’s included in the drawing? Contact Jeff Burns and he will make sure it’s in the drawing. We meet in Morrison gassed up and ready to ride. This will be a leisurely Spring ride along the Front Range, stopping for a lite lunch. Depending on early spring road conditions, destination will be determined accordingly with anticipation of covering 150-200 miles. Cathy Catrell | 720-981-8985 | cathy@pop-promotions.com April 20, 2013 Bishop Castle 9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison The castle, named after its constructor Jim Bishop, is located in south central Colorado along a paved public road, State Highway 165, approximately 13 miles southeast of the junction of State Highway 96 and State Highway 165. This highway is part of the Frontier Pathways Scenic and Historic Byway and Bishop Castle is shown on the official map. This will be a 350 to 400 mile day, so allow for that; come gassed up and ready to ride. The route to Bishop Castle will be on front range roads and back via I-25. Depending on the size of the group, the lunch stop will likely be later, around 2:30 pm after our visit to the Castle, so maybe bring a snack and water. Entrance fee to the castle is free, though small donations are suggested. Greg Cocks | 303-828-7576 | skiwi@spamcop.net www.BMWMCC.org 11 April 27, 2013 Vintage Aero Flying Museum 9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison Come enjoy one of the most amazing collections of WW I Flying Ace uniforms, medals, and replica planes anywhere in the world, right in our own backyard just east of Ft. Lupton. As a boy growing up, Andy Parks spent time living in Germany with his family and where his father got to know descendants of the WW I Aces and began collecting their uniforms and memorabilia. His father passed this amazing collection on to his son who then set up a museum. One object on display our club would probably show interest in, is the first item to bear what became the BMW roundel. It happened when the founders of BMW were competing with Mercedes to furnish engines for planes. Three BMW founders engraved the logo onto a cigarette case and gave it to test pilot Bon Himhoff. Subsequently, BMW won the contract with its inline 6-cylinder engine in a Folker D7. That was BMW’s first engine, the same configuration as the new K 1600 bikes. The logo design depicts light reflections from a rotating propeller. Your RSVP is required by March 27, 2013. Museum admission is $10 per person for the group-guided visit. There is also another hanger where you can see plane construction in progress. Visit the museum’s website at www.lafayettefoundation. org. Museum - 7125 Parks Lane, Ft. We will travel parts of the Santa Fe Trail looking at how various military forts impacted the development of the region. We plan to travel 350-400 miles each day, and weather permitting, camp the entire trip. Breakfast will usually be at a café on the road. Lunch will be either picnic style or café. Plan on cooking dinner in camp for the first night. We will stop when necessary to grocery shop, but you should bring a couple of meals with you from home. Bring a pair of comfortable walking/hiking shoes as we will spend some time looking at forts and geographical sites. Weather conditions and group desires will determine the return route. Anyone wishing to get back home sooner is welcome to break off the group. We can help plan your trip home, but if time is a factor, you should consider the I-25 slab. Joe Platko and Ed Smalley will provide detailed trip information as the departure date approaches. To participate, contact Joe Platko. Joe Platko | 303-526-9328 | jlplatko@aol.com www.BMWMCC.org 13 May 4, 2013 Tour of Honor Ride to Veteran Memorials 7:00 AM BMW of Denver, Aurora This BMWMCC ride will start with a continental breakfast provided by BMW of Denver. Maps and directions will be provided so you can find and visit about seven veteran memorials on a route of about 250 miles along the Front Range and into the mountains. Ride at your own pace by yourself or with friends like we do on the 100K Foot Ride. To aid planning for the breakfast, please register in advance at www.bmwofdenver.com/ event_list.asp. The national Tour of Honor (www.tourofhonor.com), after which our ride is modeled, is a great reason to hit the open road, honor our heroes, and contribute to a good cause, the Wounded Warrior Project. The season-long AMA sanctioned event is a self-directed ride to memorials and monuments around the continental U.S. and Hawaii in about 40 states. You can visit as many sites as you want with any route you choose. Being registered for the Tour of Honor is not required to participate in this BMWMCC ride, however, if you are registed, bring your TOH flag along for photos because there will be two of seven 2013 Colorado TOH sites on our route. For an idea of memorials we will visit on this ride visit: www.tourofhonor.com/tohforum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=311 www.tourofhonor.com/tohforum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=213 Maybe some of those places, and the ones on this ride, are those you’ve always wanted to see but haven’t taken the time to stop, read the plaques or honor those who have served our country so gallantly. Breakfast Registration: www.bmwofdenver.com/event_list.asp BMW of Denver | 2910 S Havana St, Aurora, CO | 303-755-6400 Randy Bishop | 303-284-0443 | bishoprl@earthlink.net www.BMWMCC.org 15 May 11, 2013 Prairie Canyon Ranch Pot-Luck Picnic 12:00 PM Prairie Canyon Ranch, South of Franktown The Prairie Canyon Ranch property was homesteaded by Frederick Bartruff and his family in 1873, and has been used as a working cattle ranch since that time. The land is rich in archaeological resources with evidence of human occupation up to 9,000 years ago. Join us for a pot-luck picnic at high noon, then explore the property which has several historic structures, including a cave, cemetery, and stone corrals. The Ranch is located 6 1/2 miles south of Franktown on the east side of Highway 83. Bring a dish to share–we look forward to seeing you there! www.douglas.co.us/historic/county-landmarks/prairie-canyon-ranch Pat and Judy Bygott | 303-349-3041 | pbygott@comcast.net May 17-19, 2013 AZ Beemers 32nd RoadRunner Rally Join our Arizona friends in the tall pines of Northern Arizona at Camp Shadow Pines. A weekend of great riding, food and camping awaits you. Your rally fee includes camping and dinner Friday and Saturday night, continuous coffee, clean restrooms and hot showers. Evening entertainment, door prize drawings and tech sessions are planned. AZ Beemers | rally@azbeemers.org | www.azbeemers.org 16 BMWMCC 2013 Ride Book May 18, 2013 Ride Colorado Highway 67 8:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison Last year we had such a great turnout for this dual sport ride, we thought we would do it again! This 71-mile road built in 1920 runs from Sedalia on Highway 85 to it’s southern terminus at Highway 96 at Wetmore. In that distance it passes through five distinct segments, including a long section of the abandoned Florence & Cripple Creek railroad bed, one of the most scenic and historical roads in Colorado. Colorado Highway 67 is not technical, but half of the road is unpaved, designating this as a dual sport trip. It also crosses the highest auto bridge in the state and the unique Adelaide railroad bridge. We will return via the Shelf Road, built in 1892 for stagecoaches. Carl Thomte | 303-753-6652 | rcarloski@msn.com www.BMWMCC.org 17 May 25-27, 2013 Memorial Weekend Campout Colorado River Trail 9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison Rivers have always been popular navigation routes for early man in ancient times. Today, Trough Road-Colorado River Road is still a very popular road and is an ancient trail that has been used for over 7,000 years. A cluster of pit houses were discovered between State Bridge and Radium in the mid-80’s when the road was being widened. One of the blades from a grader hit one of the pit houses and then triggered an archeological investigation. The riding theatre will be in the area from Dotsero up to Kremmling and on both sides of the river and the Gore Range. The west side of the Gore Range has many dual-sport opportunities, that are not overly technical. This area has incredible rides that will appeal to both cruisers and the GS riders. Exact details on lodging, camping, and amenities will be gathered and discussed, along with suitable rides for both riding groups. For BLM archeological reporting or to share prior experiences, contact Butch Craft for additional information. Butch Craft | 720-933-4384 | butchy_craft@yahoo.com www.BMWMCC.org 19 June 1, 2013 Peak to Peak Annual Ride 9:00 AM Red Rocks Grill, Morrison This ride is a club favorite! After departing Red Rocks Grill we pick up the actual Peak to Peak Highway in Nederland, after a short rest stop at the Happy Trails Coffee Shop, located in the old wood railroad car. We follow this scenic route to CO 7, then make a left to Estes Park, where we will have lunch at the Big Horn Restaurant. Riding options from this point are open to discussion, as we could visit Rocky Mountain National Park or take CO 7 past the Peak to Peak junction and follow it to Lyons, which is one of the best two lane highways. From Lyons we could head to Boulder, then head home from our full day of scenic riding. Mark Zimmer | 720-389-4825 | mz53biker-bmwmcc@yahoo.com June 2, 2013 Top Gun Law Enforcement Competition Competition Begins at 8:00 AM The Top Gun Competition is organized by the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club. This event is open to law enforcement motorcycle officers only. The competition is geared to test the mastery of the riders and the proficiency of the machines that they control. This is a motorcycle skills competition with riders competing in a number of obstacle courses designed to test their skills. Vendors, food and informational booths create a festival atmosphere that is irresistible to the biker in us all. Admission is free. For more information visit www.topguncops.com. New for this year will be an additional route for adventure riders, due to the increasing number of riders of that persuasion. Also included is an additional night, so those inclined can stay and ride the great roads in the area, namely Wyoming roads 230 and 70, arguably the best roads in the state. Ouray, Colorado, is my favorite 4th of July destination. It’s just a blast. If you have never been, you really should consider it. Here’s the plan. July 3rd: Riders’ meeting 8:45 am. Leave Morrison at 9:00 am sharp, travel via 285 to Ouray, with a break and regroup in Johnson’s Village (near Buena Vista). July 4th: Our 1st full day in Ouray and lots to see and do in town. Seriously, you don’t want to miss it. It starts with a giant mountain rescue fundraiser breakfast. Shop for t-shirts and then watch the Harley’s go by in the parade down main street. After lunch, the annual fire-hose battle takes place right smack in the middle of town. You won’t believe how much fun it is–worth making the whole trip for! Sundown brings everyone out again for the flare parade down Red Mountain into town, followed by a world-class fireworks display. Ouray is in a bowl of mountains. Fireworks are LOUD here! July 5th & 6th: These are planned as riding days and you would be hard pressed to find a better starting point than Ouray. Road riding or off-road riding–it’s all here! It’s a GS paradise with high-mountain passes galore. Road riding starts with the Million Dollar Highway, south over Red Mountain Pass into Silverton. Roads north and west lead to Telluride, Rico, Deloris, and Mesa Verde. 30 BMWMCC 2013 Ride Book Ouray 4th of July - Continued Or, take the turn onto highway 141, my personal pick for best ride in the whole state. Feel lazy? There are for-hire jeep tours of most of the offroad passes. End your day at the municipal hot springs in town or even the clothes-optional one just north of town if you forgot your suit. July 7th: It’s Sunday and we make the return trip to Denver. However, there is an extra treat in store on the run back. We will do a seldom travelled but spectacular road 114 from just east of Gunnison over to Saguache, before heading back towards 285. IMPORTANT NOTE: This trip requires advance planning, since Ouray books up early. The plan is to book one motel location to also serve as a meet-up place. Campers can make their own reservations. Please contact Jeff Burns in advance for motel reservations and ride updates. High passes like Georgia, Boreas and Weston and lower passes like Stoney, La Salle, Salt Creek, Bassam Park and Cameron. Not to mention several paved passes on the way that include Crow Hill, Kenosha, Red Hill and Trout Creek. The actual route is yet to be decided but will include at least some of these passes. Our route should be suitable for big bikes if you know what you’re doing, however, this should not be your first ride on dirt. We will meet for breakfast at 7:00 am then head out from the TNT parking lot at 8:00 am. Email route suggestions to Paul ‘Shu’ Shushan. September 13-16, 2013 Fall Overnight PassBagger 3-4 Day Camping Trip 8:00 AM TNT Country Kitchen, Morrison The Fall PassBagger Overnight is a dual sport ride over many of Colorado passes. The route is yet to be determined, but count on several passes each day, both paved and dirt. This will not be a “technical” ride, but we will be covering 200-300 miles each day riding on good dirt roads, sometimes venturing onto ‘not-sogood’ roads. This should not be your first time riding a dual sport route and you should be comfortable keeping up a good pace on gravel roads. This is your choice of either a 3 or 4 day trip. We head out Friday morning riding over some passes and set up camp Friday night, then Saturday enjoy riding over more passes. Depending on participant preferences, we can make this trip easy or just a bit more challenging, though nothing too terribly difficult. On Sunday, it’s your choice: you can pack up and ride home or stay and do more pass exploration with us, riding around the camp area. We will return to camp Sunday night and head home Monday morning, bagging more passes on the way! We will probably camp in ‘KOA’ type campgrounds that have running water, hot showers, etc, so we need to know in advance how many people to reserve spots for. Motels are a possibility as well. We will leave from Morrison at 8:00 am sharp. It is perpetual in that the requirements can be completed over several years. The PassBagger Quest requires official registration and payment of $15 per person ($30 for 2-up), for each level of fifty passes for which the registrant will receive an instructional packet and pass accumulation booklet. The registrant must then ride to the top of at least 50/100/150/200 individual Colorado mountain passes of their own choosing at their own pace and schedule, then document the accomplishment with a photograph of themselves, their bike and the sign or equivalent located at the top of each pass. Upon completion, the ride must be entered in the completed PassBagger booklet indicating the names of at least 50 passes and the dates completed, with photographs. The booklet is then given to the PassBagger Coordinator who will authenticate the pass completions and certify eligibility for the award. Riders may choose any passes within Colorado as long as the pass appears on a published map or book. Because the contest is perpetual and not year specific, contestants may take as long as they want or need to complete.
