PAT PARELLI Pat Parelli is the founder of Parelli Natural Horsemanship (PNH), a world-class horseman, and one of the most engaging, spirited and imaginative teachers the horsemanship world has ever seen. He learned from some of the world’s best horsemen, and the reverence he shows for his mentors is truly inspiring. Pat was born in the California Bay area and from an early age his love of horses was very apparent. Throughout his formative years, he went out of his way to learn from some incredible horsemen and the lessons and skills Pat learned from these men shaped his desire to put the well-being of the horse first. In the early 1990s the Parelli brand took off when, along with his wife Linda, he coined the term “natural horsemanship”. The first Parelli instructor program was organised in 1993, and two years later, the first Parelli Centre was launched. Currently, Parelli Natural Horsemanship has centres on three continents and hundreds of thousands of students the world over. Pat remains the face of natural horsemanship, and his never-ending desire to make the world a better place for horses and humans has led to Parelli Natural Horsemanship’s reputation as one of the most popular horse training programs in the world. LINDA PARELLI Linda’s experience with Pat Parelli and as co-founder of Parelli Natural Horsemanship (PNH), coupled with her time studying with classical dressage master Walter Zettl, has given her unique insight into horse behaviour and development. Linda’s gift for identifying and interpreting horse behaviour and teaching brings out the best in her student’s horse and makes her one of the most sought-after natural horsemanship experts in the world today. Full of passion and devotion to natural horsemanship, Linda is an inspiration to horsemen and horsewomen of all disciplines. She believes the combination of PNH and classical training provides the ultimate recipe for horse and rider success. four distinct stages to help horses be more confident with the bit and to teach riders to have more “feel”. Through her work with Walter Zettl she came up with a way to explain and teach contact with the horse. David Simons has experienced, firsthand, how some traditional training methods can cause conflict between the horse and rider, creating the inevitable result of tense or fearful horses that are unable to perform to their maximum potential. At 18, Damien purchased a Thoroughbred and commenced saddle training with some of Australia’s best dressage riders. David found the John Lyons training method best reflected his ambitions in horse training and in 1998, went to Colorado, US, where he successfully completed an intensive accreditation training program, becoming John’s first accredited trainer in Australia. After many years in dressage, he discovered the training of David and Sandi Simons and went on to complete a twoyear apprenticeship with them. Today he is the principal of Moorlands Equestrian in NSW, where he starts young horses, gives lessons, attends to his show team, cares for broodmares and stands three stallions. Damien has notched up major wins at Royal level Australia-wide, but receives the greatest joy from reconnecting horse lovers with their passion. ■ Email damienjudd@hotmail.com ■ Damien’s training sessions will be at 2pm, Thursday, November 7 and 10.30pm, Saturday, November 9 in the Think Fencing Woodgrain Arena David has since added to the Lyons method, developing his own unique training technique. At their training facility in Drysdale, Victoria, David and his wife Sandi train horses of all ages, sizes and disciplines. ■ Visit www.davidsimons.com.au ■ David’s training sessions will be at 2pm, Satuday, November 9 and 10am, Sunday, November 10 in the Think Fencing Woodgrain Arena STEVE HALFPENNY – CORONATION’S DRESSAGE MATE Steve is another of our trainers who has taken up the wild Waler reins midway through the program. Although he was a Parelli Natural Horsemanship trainer for seven years, Steve felt the need to move in a different direction. His key focus has been to find an easier way for the horse and rider to communicate, so that riders can better understand the horse’s intrinsic nature. Steve’s training methods are extremely successful in helping dressage and competition riders achieve their goals and he has been conducting clinics across the country. His training emphasis on a much lighter contact and responsiveness between horse and rider, led him to initiate Light Hands Dressage. This technique is not only effective for dressage and high level competitors, but is also highly beneficial for anyone looking to build their horse’s gymnastic ability and improve communication between the partners. ■ Visit www.silversands.com.au ■ Steve’s training sessions will be at 3pm, Thursday, November 7 and 12.15pm, Saturday, November 9 in the Think Fencing Woodgrain Arena EQUITANA SYDNEY 2013 19 FIRST CLASS EQUINE EDUCATION EQUITANA Sydney will provide an equine education program of informative presentations from 9.30am to 5.45pm, Thursday to Saturday, and until 3.45pm on Sunday. His philosophy combines veterinary medicine with conventional medicine to provide the best of both worlds with regard to health maintenance and peak performance. Dr Ridgway will explain the biomechanics behind “crooked horse syndrome”, where the balance and biomechanics of the “natural horse” needs to be optimised to get true straightness and balance through an integrative medical view. He will also cover heel height asymmetry and how it changes joint angles from the ground up, causing marked changes in the horse’s balance. ■ See Kerry at 12pm, Thursday, November 7; at 12.15pm, Friday, November 8, and 2pm, Saturday, November 9, in Classroom 1 JEAN-MICHEL ROUDIER (FRA) Jean-Michel Roudier was the only one in his family interested in horses. But she only realised this when she began to examine her mother’s life and to understand how much she had inherited from a feisty and beautiful woman for whom “the horses always came first”. Mary’s original aim was to write an extraordinary life-long love story that began in 1933 when her mother, then 17, met a handsome German naval officer who would later captain the By MARY HANNA Kormoran, the cruiser responsible for Australia’s worst-ever naval disaster, the 1942 sinking of the HMAS Sydney. A Long Rein is that story – and so much more. It is a fascinating account of Mary Hanna’s own life and of the amazing men, women – and horses – who inspired her to take on the world’s best riders in Atlanta in 1996, in Sydney in 2000, in Athens in 2004, in London in 2012 and, she hopes, once more in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Most of the time the only interaction horse buyers have with that element of the industry is when they decide to buy a horse directly from a breeder. Often the way that breed types or “bloods” are written about in sales descriptions can be confusing, or not give you enough information about the temperament or attributes of that breed so you can make an informed choice. EQUITANA’s Kelato Breed Village provides an open and friendly environment where you can see a great variety of horses up close and have your questions answered by knowledgeable individuals and groups. ■ Individual breed and group displays are held daily. This incredibly testing sport showcases the seemingly effortless movements of the elite western trained horse – all to fabulous music. The sport of reining is best described as a heightened state of communication between horse and rider, perfectly blending the traditions of classical western horsemanship with the timeless legacy of the ranching horse. Speedy, powerful manoeuvres combined with impeccable control and finesse make it fascinating and exciting to watch as the horse is willingly guided with little or no apparent resistance. The horses are scored on a positive numeric scale with 70 denoting a correct performance. FABULOUS ENTERTAINMENT The individual manoeuvres are scored in one point increments from a low of -1.5 to a high of +1.5 for excellent quality, with 0 signifying a manoeuvre that is correct, but with no degree of difficulty. OPENING night guarantees even more for your money. For example, a horse starting with a score of 70 could end up with anything from 68.5 to 71.5 after its first maneuver. At the EQUITANA Australian Open Reining Championships, the crowd will get to see the best riders and horses in the sport demonstrate their talents, as they gallop fast and slow circles, execute perfect lead changes, spin at amazing speed while pivoting on a single back foot, roll back, back up, and perform the quintessential reining manoeuvre, the sliding stop, that will leave your heart pounding. 52 EQUITANA SYDNEY 2013 As part of the evening program, our special US guest, Al Dunning, will enthrall you with a special reining presentation and the amazing Double Dans will perform one of their internationally acclaimed acts. And if you are in the audience, please remember that reiners like to know the crowd is having a good time, so the louder you yell, hoot and holler, the more enthusiastic they will be. And, at the end of the night, the four winners of the EQUITANA youth reining heats will entertain you with a fun quadrille. ■ 7.30pm in the John Deere Dome EVENING PROGRAM DAN James and Dan Steers, best known to fans as the Double Dans, are back at EQUITANA this year and it will be the only time Australian audiences will have the chance to see the boys perform together during 2013. As Dan James, winner of the 2008 Way of The Horse – Australian Horsemanship Challenge and the US horsemanship challenge 2012 Road to the Horse colt starting championship, has moved to America and Dan James is busy training horses and giving clinics across the country, the boys don’t get the chance to “play” together much anymore, so watch out reining fans. As part of the Australian Open Reining Championships, the Double Dans will show us some of the training that has made Double Dan Horsemanship what it is today. Entertainment, education and training is what the boys are all about and they plan to raise the bar at EQUITANA Sydney, adding pyrotechnics and a wonderful performance with reining horses and fire whips. Proudly supported by naming rights partner “Be the Influence: Tackling Binge Drinking” and supporting partners Gow Gates and IRT, Friday evening provides a night of action for show jumping fans, as the Be The Influence Equestrian Grand Final – World Cup Jumping takes centre stage. Eighteen of Australia’s top rider and horse combinations will compete to determine who takes out the champion title. Riders have spent the year battling it out through the World Cup Series to secure one of the limited spots on offer in the Be the Influence Equestrian Grand Final. Riders such as Jamie Kermond, Merrick Ubank, Tom McDermott, Billy Raymont and Sharon Slater will provide audiences with an explosion of action as the elite of the Australian Jumping world pit their amazing horses against the specially designed course. The course has been developed by world-renowned expert, John Valance, who designs approximately 20 shows per year and has designed around 80 World Cup qualifying competitions, major competitions such as Sydney Royal Easter Show, Australian Championships and Agricultural Shows. John has used all of his considerable skills to challenge our rider and horse combinations, so it will take both skill and incredible timing to get through cleanly. Jumping classes are held over a course of show jumping obstacles, including verticals, spreads, double and triple combinations, usually with many turns and changes of direction. The intent is to jump cleanly over a set course within an allotted time. Time faults are assessed for exceeding the time allowance. Jumping faults are incurred for knockdowns and blatant disobedience, such as refusals when the horse stops before a fence or “runs out”. Horses are allowed a limited number of refusals before being disqualified. Placings are based on the lowest number of points or “faults” accumulated. A horse and rider who have not accumulated any jumping faults or penalty points are said to have scored a “clear round.” PLUS ENTERTAINMENT TO KICK off the night with energy guaranteed to get our audience in the high flying mood, EQUITANA has secured just the right entertainment – the Jelly Bean Jam Band. Deliciously tasty, full-flavoured hits of yesteryear combined with scrumptious servings of current chart fillers have given Jellybean Jam the recipe for success and has established them as Australia’s hardest working corporate party act. Non-stop medleys with tongue in cheek interpretations of the most memorable party tunes from disco to swing, Motown to Latin, funk, rock and pop, will have you dancing in your seat. ■ 7.30pm in the John Deere Dome 54 EQUITANA SYDNEY 2013 EVENING PROGRAM WIND UP THE EVENING WITH BREATHTAKING EXCITEMENT After the World Cup jumping final, the high flying excitement continues with the “Accumulator Challenge”, which provides additional prize money for the riders who dare to take it on! This competition takes place over eight fences with an increasing degree of difficulty plus one Joker fence. Bonus points are awarded as follows: one point for clearing obstacle number one, two points for number two, three points for number three and so on to a total of 36 points. No point is awarded if an obstacle is knocked down. The Accumulator is run against the clock – one round only. The Joker fence, which is the most difficult, is placed after the finish line. Once the rider has crossed the finish line their time is recorded and he or she has the choice to take on the Joker or not. If the Joker is cleared, the rider earns double the points of the last obstacle of the course (16 points). If the Joker is knocked, these 16 points are deducted from the rider’s total points. So make sure you stay till the end of the night for this “make or break” finish to the Be the Influence Equestrian Grand Final – Jumping program. TL1898945 EQUITANA SYDNEY 2013 55 EVENING PROGRAM SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9 DRESSAGE GRAND PRIX FREESTYLE SPECTACULAR SATURDAY night should not be missed as EQUITANA Sydney and Equestrian Australia present the Be the Influence Equestrian Grand Final – Dressage. Proudly supported by naming right partner Be the Influence: Tackling Binge Drinking and supporting partners Gow Gates, IRT and the Australian Sports Commission, the event presents the beautiful and balletic freestyle component of the dressage competition. This CDI World Cup qualifier not only demonstrates the high degree of training and athleticism required for this level of competition, but provides a truly moving spectacle, as rider and horse work together to individual music choreography that will capture spectator’s imagination. The competition will be as tough as an outstanding Australian field including: Olympian Mary Hanna and Equestrian Australia domestic athlete of the year Maree Tomkinson. As a special treat for dressage fans, visiting UK Olympic star Carl Hester will add a unique freestyle presentation to the evening, with guest equine partner, Luxor 118 – Hannoverian chestnut gelding, owned by Gregory, Katharine and Jane Farrell from Mulawa Performance. ENTERTAINMENT OPENING our Spectacular Saturday program is the amazing The Drum Squad, who will transport you to exotic places with world music rhythms via a drum extravaganza designed to make everyone want to join in the performance. The Drum Squad will entertain with pieces such as “Jar-whoo”, a powerful display of drumming melding American drum line tricks with ancient African groove; “Synco”, a work inspired by the dance rhythms of Cuba and Brazil, and “Samba, Bomba and Conga”, which will take you on a fun filled trip to Rio. Joining The Drum Squad is composer/performer John Fleming. John is an award winning songwriter and vocalist known for his work in music comedy duo Scared Weird Little Guys. ■ 7.30pm in the John Deere Dome 56 EQUITANA SYDNEY 2013 EVENING PROGRAM TO MAKE it to the EQUITANA Sydney Be The Influence Equestrian Grand Final – Dressage competition, horse and rider combinations have had to make it through a series of five qualifying events which were held across the country. The Equestrian Grand Final concept is a great innovation for equestrian sport in Australia and provides riders with the chance to perform in an international quality venue and big crowd atmosphere. The competition is held as a Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) Pacific League World Cup Qualifier (CDI-W) and is conducted under FEI rules. This year, the CDI-W Grand Prix, held on Friday, November 8, was also a qualifier for the World Equestrian Games 2014, so the competition for places has been hot. Many of Australia’s top dressage competitors will be joining elite riders, Mary Hanna and Maree Tompkinson in the arena tonight, including Vanessa Way, Sheridyn Ashwood, Mark Arthur, Nadia Coghlan, Anjanette Harten, Sue Hearn and Jeremy Janjic.
