between Australia and the UK, and the beautiful
Australian Quarter Horse Association Association lead
classes.
The EQUITANA team has worked hard to bring you a
memorable event that will showcase the very best
horses, horsemanship, education, entertainment and
equine exhibition in the country.
We have put together an education program with a
remarkable array of topics. Leading educators and
presenters from across the country will join our
international visitors on the menu.
We are very grateful to our international presenters,
Carl Hester, Al Dunning and Pat and Linda Parelli for
making the journey to join us in Sydney and hope they
enjoy their stay.
As a special feature for the Sydney program we are
introducing The Mitavite Waler Showcase, which is
designed to raise awareness of the plight of Australia’s
iconic war horses in an educational and entertaining
format that the whole family will enjoy.
We are proud that we have been able to attract them
to EQUITANA Sydney to showcase their incredible talent
and expertise, as do many internationally regarded
Aussies including Brett Parbery, Paul Tapner, Dr Andrew
McLean and Ken Fawkner.
This year we are pleased to be conducting the newly
configured EQUITANA Australian Open Finals in the
sports of reining and barrel racing.
We are also thrilled to be hosting the Be the Influence
Equestrian Grand Final for dressage, show jumping and
the exciting new indoor exhibition eventing.
It is a privilege to be working with the leading
equestrian sports associations in Australia and we are
pleased to present the finals in international standard
facilities.
We are also pleased to present a variety of other
amazing competitions at EQUITANA Sydney, including:
The Man From Snowy River Legend’s Challenge;
reining; Australia’s final qualifier for the 2014 WEG
reining team; an international Horseball match
WELCOME to EQUITANA Sydney!
I am sure you will have an enjoyable and
unforgettable time at this incredible meeting
place for all things equine.
Horse Deals magazine and The Land
newspaper have teamed up as exclusive media
partners of this amazing event since its
foundation.
It was no surprise that the inaugural EQUITANA
Sydney kicked off with such success given the
huge following EQUITANA Melbourne has
created every alternate year to Sydney.
The growing popularity of horse sports
throughout Australia has created an insatiable
level of demand for equine information, new
products and horse-based entertainment.
Equitana Sydney has all of these elements.
As Australia’s number 1 equestrian magazine,
Horse Deals has been a proud contributor to

OUR STAR PRESENTERS
CARL HESTER
Britain’s leading international riders in the sport of
dressage, currently ranked number two in the
Federation Equestre International (FEI) world
individual dressage rankings.
EQUITANA Australia is proud to announce that UK gold
medalist dressage star, Carl Hester, will be delivering
the Specialist Dressage Clinic at the Sydney event this
year.
He began his dressage career in style, winning the
1985 National Young Rider Championship just 18
months after taking up dressage.
Carl, 44, was born on the Isle of Sark and is one of
In his competition career as a senior, Carl amassed a
record of 63 national dressage titles and has taken out
the British Dressage National Championship seven
times.
He has competed in four Olympics, one World
Equestrian Games, four European Championships and
has reached one World Cup Final.
From his first Olympic competition at Athens in 2004,
where he and Escapado were the highest-placed
British combination, through to the many
championship wins and the heartbreak in 2008 when
both his Olympic contenders ended up out of the
running due to injuries, Carl has continued his upward
march.
In 2009, Carl and his new ride, Uthopia, achieved
results of 76.11 per cent at Premier League PSG and
Concours de Dressage International (CDI) Inter 1
winning with 76.66pc.
The trail of success continued with him being part of
the silver medal winning team at the 2010 Alltech
World Equestrian Games in Kentucky on Liebling II.
In 2011, he won an historic team gold medal at the
2011 European Championships in Rotterdam, as well
as achieving individual silver medals in the Grand Prix
Special and Grand Prix Freestyle with the exciting
Uthopia.
The pair rounded off last year with stunning
performances in the ground breaking British team at
the London Olympics, with scores of 75.44pc in the
grand prix and 83.45pc in the freestyle, to win team
gold on Uthopia.
While Carl has rightfully earned the reputation as one
of the greatest dressage riders of our time, his
incredible skill as a trainer is also acknowledged
internationally.
From winning Dressage Trainer of the Year in 1997, to
coaching protégée Charlotte Dujardin to double gold
at the Olympics last year, Carl continues to grow as a
trainer and will help you to get the feel and technique
he shows in every ride.

OUR STAR PRESENTERS
PAT AND LINDA PARELLI
EQUITANA Australia is pleased to present the dynamic team
of Pat and Linda Parelli as part of its education program this
year.
PAT PARELLI
Pat Parelli is the founder of Parelli Natural Horsemanship
(PNH), a world-class horseman, and one of the most
engaging, spirited and imaginative teachers the
horsemanship world has ever seen.
He learned from some of the world’s best horsemen, and the
reverence he shows for his mentors is truly inspiring.
Pat was born in the California Bay area and from an early age
his love of horses was very apparent.
Throughout his formative years, he went out of his way to
learn from some incredible horsemen and the lessons and
skills Pat learned from these men shaped his desire to put
the well-being of the horse first.
In the early 1990s the Parelli brand took off when, along
with his wife Linda, he coined the term “natural horsemanship”.
The first Parelli instructor program was organised in
1993, and two years later, the first Parelli Centre was
launched.
Currently, Parelli Natural Horsemanship has centres on three
continents and hundreds of thousands of students the world
over.
Pat remains the face of natural horsemanship, and his
never-ending desire to make the world a better place for
horses and humans has led to Parelli Natural Horsemanship’s
reputation as one of the most popular horse training
programs in the world.
LINDA PARELLI
Linda’s experience with Pat Parelli and as co-founder of
Parelli Natural Horsemanship (PNH), coupled with her time
studying with classical dressage master Walter Zettl, has
given her unique insight into horse behaviour and
development.
Linda’s gift for identifying and interpreting horse behaviour
and teaching brings out the best in her student’s horse and
makes her one of the most sought-after natural
horsemanship experts in the world today.
Full of passion and devotion to natural horsemanship, Linda
is an inspiration to horsemen and horsewomen of all
disciplines.
She believes the combination of PNH and classical training
provides the ultimate recipe for horse and rider success.
four distinct stages to help horses be more confident with
the bit and to teach riders to have more “feel”.
Through her work with Walter Zettl she came up with a way
to explain and teach contact with the horse.
The Game of Contact breaks achieving contact down into
Following the classical training scale, the Game of
Contact provides a step-by-step method for horses
and humans to achieve contact and partnership.

THE World Equestrian Games (WEG) will be held in Caen,
France in 2014.
The games include individual and team championships in
eight Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) disciplines.

reining team competed at the games for the first time,
finishing 11th overall.
Two of our riders finished in the top 20 in the individual
reining competition, placing 13th and 19th respectively in a
field of more than 80 of the world’s best reining riders.
Before a rider can be considered for team selection, he or
she must fulfill strict qualifying criteria and achieve a score
of at least 68 in two Concours de Reining International (CRI)

The WEG 2014 reining team is determined to improve
on that result – aiming to finish in the top five in the

top 20 of the individual competition.
Members of the Australian team were selected from a
competition series that was played throughout NSW during
2013, so the best players in the country will be representing
Australia at EQUITANA.
A team of four Australian riders and one reserve will be
selected to compete at WEG in Caen and competition for
selection will be fierce.

been playing Horseball for 20 years in the UK; Becky
Markwell who started playing horseball in 2004 and is now
playing at international level; Sam Coulman who has worked
her way up to first division; Joe Benham who has competed
internationally on five occasions and Jasmine Granger, who
has played horseball in Spain at the Spanish Open Ladies

MINITANA – MINIATURE HORSE SHOWCASE
MINIATURE horses are winning the hearts of animal
lovers all over the world, but don’t let their tiny
stature fool you.
These athletic little equines will easily pull an adult in
harness and sulky, jump more than their own height

Years of selective breeding and the use of local and

more representative of a light riding horse, standing
under 34 inches or 8.2 hands high.
The Independent Miniature Horse Registry (IMHR)
has nearly 20,000 horses listed in the studbook,
including lines from the United Kingdom, Europe,
New Zealand and the United States.
Events are held across Australia including the fiveday national show, which attracts about 500 horses
from all states of Australia and NZ.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN BARREL RACING CHAMPIONSHIP
EQUITANA is excited to add barrel racing to
the Australian Open program.
One of the fastest and most
glamorous of the western
events, barrel racing
provides the

It is a popular
international sport

and there is a place for everyone in barrel
racing, from the beginner rider to the
professional trainer.
The Australian Barrel Horse Association
(ABHA) has affiliates across Australia and runs
two major types of events; divisional barrel
races and classics. Divisional barrel
races are the backbone of the
ABHA, as they allow people to
barrel race without fuss or
pressure and enjoy a fun
day out with their horses.
The classic events are
run for horses aged six
years or under.
The Australian Open
shortlist will feature

fast and accurately and win; hesitate or knock
down a barrel and lose, so don’t miss this
thrilling event.

engage each and every person it touches
The transition to domestic life for the
Walers has been assisted with thanks to
the team at Mitavite, who have tailored a
diet for each horse; Joseph Lyddy who has
provided leather care, hoof care and
grooming products; Diamond Boots
Australia have kept the Walers’ legs well
protected during their training; Wild Horse
Australia has provided insect repellent
horse rugs, and RB Sellars which has
provided clothing for our trainers.
The Walers are now looking healthy and
shining with their new diet and care.
All of our trainers are happy with the
progress of their Walers, remarking on
their sensible attitude in a new
environment, intelligence, and the manner
in which they have bonded with their new
partners – the same attributes that were
INTRODUCING THE TRAINERS
RHONDA ARMSTRONG – DIGGER’S ALL-ROUNDER MATE
Taking over the training reins of a wild Waler at the halfway
mark would be a challenge for anyone, but Rhonda
Armstrong’s entire life and that of her family’s has been
centred around horses.
Show jumping and novelties were her first passion and she
rode novelty ponies for Pat Keneally, and Suzie Wong.
Rhonda then gained many years experience in jumping,
eventing, dressage and showing before moving onto the
western and open hack rings with her Appaloosa.
Thirteen years ago Rhonda had heart failure and ended up in
18 EQUITANA SYDNEY 2013
a wheelchair but soldiered on through years of intense
treatment.
Digger is the first horse that she has educated since
becoming ill and she is proud to be able to train Digger in
memory of her grandfather, Leslie Oliver Langton, who was
in the 4th Light Horse and at the charge of Beersheba.
■ Email teamoffour@westnet.com.au
■ Rhonda’s training sessions will be at 4pm, Friday,
November 8 and 3pm, Sunday, November 10 in the Think
Fencing Woodgrain Arena
considered so valuable when facing combat
situations.
With daily education sessions and a chance
to meet the Waler horses and their trainers
in the Mitavite Waler Barn in addition to the
Showcase, there is no shortage of
opportunity to see these remarkable horses.
■ 4.30pm, Sunday, November 10 in the
John Deere Dome
INTRODUCING THE TRAINERS
WAYNE ARMSTRONG – TROOPER’S CARRIAGE
DRIVING MATE
Wayne’s father was a harness racing trainer
and driver and after his death at a race at the
Melbourne showgrounds it became
necessary for Wayne to work in the stables,
educating and training horses at only 14.
CHRISTY CONNOR – BILL’S TRICK RIDING MATE
Christy Connor has been around horses
since she was born, living on a cattle and
sheep property in the Southern Tablelands
of NSW.
She runs her own horse breaking and
training business, CC’s Equine Training, from
her home town of Taralga.
After training and driving many winners in
country and metropolitan Victoria, he turned
to farriery.
Christy competes in Stockman Challenge
and has had great success through the
years, winning many ladies championship
titles.
Through his 45 years with horses, he has also
ridden and competed in showing, jumping,
dressage, one day eventing and western.
She also competes in campdrafting, team
penning/yarding, showjumping and shows.
However, for the past 17 years Wayne’s
passion has been cross country driving.
■ Email teamoffour@westnet.com.au
Wayne’s approach to starting young horses
provides his pupils with the tools they need
to create a successful partnership with their
horse – in any discipline.
■ Wayne’s training sessions will be at
11am, Friday, November 8 and 12.45pm,
Sunday, November 10 in the Think Fencing
Woodgrain Arena
Trick riding is something Christy has been
doing for the past five years, along with
liberty and Roman riding.
She learnt this craft from Heath Harris and
Bridie Sparkes and is the team leader of the
Girls Girls Girls Extreme Stunt Team.

DAMIEN JUDD – RUPERT’S SHOWING MATE
DAVID SIMONS – GUNNER’S REINING MATE
Tamworth trainer Damien Judd’s first
words were “my pony” and he began
showing Arabians at the age of nine.
David Simons has experienced,
firsthand, how some traditional training
methods can cause conflict between the
horse and rider, creating the inevitable
result of tense or fearful horses that are
unable to perform to their maximum
potential.
At 18, Damien purchased a Thoroughbred
and commenced saddle training with some
of Australia’s best dressage riders.
David found the John Lyons training
method best reflected his ambitions in
horse training and in 1998, went to
Colorado, US, where he successfully
completed an intensive accreditation
training program, becoming John’s first
accredited trainer in Australia.
After many years in dressage, he
discovered the training of David and Sandi
Simons and went on to complete a twoyear apprenticeship with them.
Today he is the principal of Moorlands
Equestrian in NSW, where he starts young
horses, gives lessons, attends to his show
team, cares for broodmares and stands
three stallions.
Damien has notched up major wins at
Royal level Australia-wide, but receives the
greatest joy from reconnecting horse
lovers with their passion.
■ Email damienjudd@hotmail.com
■ Damien’s training sessions will be at
2pm, Thursday, November 7 and
10.30pm, Saturday, November 9 in the
Think Fencing Woodgrain Arena
David has since added to the Lyons
method, developing his own unique
training technique.
At their training facility in Drysdale,
Victoria, David and his wife Sandi train
horses of all ages, sizes and disciplines.
■ Visit www.davidsimons.com.au
■ David’s training sessions will be at 2pm,
Satuday, November 9 and 10am, Sunday,
November 10 in the Think Fencing Woodgrain
Arena
STEVE HALFPENNY – CORONATION’S DRESSAGE MATE
Steve is another of our trainers who has taken up the
wild Waler reins midway through the program.
Although he was a Parelli Natural Horsemanship trainer
for seven years, Steve felt the need to move in a
different direction.
His key focus has been to find an easier way for the
horse and rider to communicate, so that riders can
better understand the horse’s intrinsic nature.
Steve’s training methods are extremely successful in
helping dressage and competition riders achieve their goals
and he has been conducting clinics across the country.
His training emphasis on a much lighter contact and
responsiveness between horse and rider, led him to
initiate Light Hands Dressage.
This technique is not only effective for dressage and high
level competitors, but is also highly beneficial for anyone
looking to build their horse’s gymnastic ability and
improve communication between the partners.
■ Visit www.silversands.com.au
■ Steve’s training sessions will be at 3pm, Thursday,
November 7 and 12.15pm, Saturday, November 9 in the
Think Fencing Woodgrain Arena

SPECIAL INTEREST PRESENTATIONS
IN SYDNEY this year, EQUITANA is offering a range of special interest sessions, some of which
include:
DR KERRY RIDGWAY (USA)
The son of a horseman, Dr Ridgway is well known in endurance
riding circles as both a competitor and a veterinarian.
Dr Ridgway operates a holistically based veterinary practice in
Aiken, South Carolina, US, with his wife Christine Heraud-Ridgway.
After practicing conventional medicine for more than 20 years, he
decided to direct his focus toward chiropractic and acupuncture.
His philosophy combines veterinary medicine with conventional
medicine to provide the best of both worlds with regard to health
maintenance and peak performance.
Dr Ridgway will explain the biomechanics behind “crooked horse
syndrome”, where the balance and biomechanics of the “natural
horse” needs to be optimised to get true straightness and balance
through an integrative medical view.
He will also cover heel height asymmetry and how it changes joint
angles from the ground up, causing marked changes in the horse’s
balance.
■ See Kerry at 12pm, Thursday, November 7; at 12.15pm, Friday,
November 8, and 2pm, Saturday, November 9, in Classroom 1
JEAN-MICHEL ROUDIER (FRA)
Jean-Michel Roudier was the only one in his family interested in horses.
He started riding when he was 10 years old and went on to become the chairman of the French Dressage Committee from
1999 to 2004.
He began judging national shows at the 1980 French National Dressage Championships and since then, has gone on to
judge numerous international dressage competitions, including World Cup Finals in s’Hertogenbosch, Las Vegas and
Gothenburg; World Young Horses Championship 2006 in Verden; the 2011 European Championship and the Hong Kong
and London Olympic Games.
With this solid experience and knowledge, Jean-Michel will be able to give a unique perspective to gaining extra points
from the judge.
■ See Jean-Michel at 4pm, Friday, November 8, in the CRT arena and 2.45pm, Saturday, November 9, in the HorseQuest

A Long Rein
AN EQUESTRIAN JOURNEY
TL1902724
Four-time equestrian Olympian Mary Hanna was born both
to ride and to compete at the highest level. But she only
realised this when she began to examine her mother’s life and
to understand how much she had inherited from a feisty and
beautiful woman for whom “the horses always came first”.
Mary’s original aim was to write an extraordinary life-long love
story that began in 1933 when her mother, then 17, met a
handsome German naval officer who would later captain the
By MARY HANNA
Kormoran, the cruiser responsible for Australia’s worst-ever
naval disaster, the 1942 sinking of the HMAS Sydney.
A Long Rein is that story – and so much more. It is a
fascinating account of Mary Hanna’s own life and of the
amazing men, women – and horses – who inspired her to
take on the world’s best riders in Atlanta in 1996, in
Sydney in 2000, in Athens in 2004, in London in 2012
and, she hopes, once more in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

BREED VILLAGE
MAP LEGEND
THE KELATO BREED VILLAGE
CHOOSING the breed for you or deciding which horse to
breed with is often seen as a complicated and mysterious
process, making it difficult for many horse enthusiasts to
know where to start.
Most of the time the only interaction horse buyers have with
that element of the industry is when they decide to buy a
horse directly from a breeder.
Often the way that breed types or “bloods” are written
about in sales descriptions can be confusing, or not give you
enough information about the temperament or attributes of
that breed so you can make an informed choice.
EQUITANA’s Kelato Breed Village provides an open and
friendly environment where you can see a great variety of
horses up close and have your questions answered by
knowledgeable individuals and groups.
■ Individual breed and group displays are held daily.
Check the timetable at the Howie Lawns Arena for more
specific breed times

EQUITANA SYDNEY 2013 51
EVENING PROGRAM
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7
EQUITANA AUSTRALIAN OPEN REINING CHAMPIONSHIPS –
A NIGHT OF ACTION AND MUSIC
THE EQUITANA Australian Open Reining Championship,
hosted in conjunction with Reining Australia, promises a
night of beauty and athleticism at its very best. This
incredibly testing sport showcases the seemingly effortless
movements of the elite western trained horse – all to
fabulous music.
The sport of reining is best described as a heightened state of
communication between horse and rider, perfectly blending
the traditions of classical western horsemanship with the
timeless legacy of the ranching horse.
Speedy, powerful manoeuvres combined with impeccable
control and finesse make it fascinating and exciting to watch
as the horse is willingly guided with little or no apparent
resistance.
The horses are scored on a positive numeric scale with 70
denoting a correct performance.
FABULOUS ENTERTAINMENT
The individual manoeuvres are scored in one point
increments from a low of -1.5 to a high of +1.5 for excellent
quality, with 0 signifying a manoeuvre that is correct, but
with no degree of difficulty.
OPENING night guarantees even more for your
money.
For example, a horse starting with a score of 70 could end up
with anything from 68.5 to 71.5 after its first maneuver.
At the EQUITANA Australian Open Reining Championships,
the crowd will get to see the best riders and horses in the
sport demonstrate their talents, as they gallop fast and slow
circles, execute perfect lead changes, spin at amazing speed
while pivoting on a single back foot, roll back, back up, and
perform the quintessential reining manoeuvre, the sliding
stop, that will leave your heart pounding.
52 EQUITANA SYDNEY 2013
As part of the evening program, our special US guest,
Al Dunning, will enthrall you with a special reining
presentation and the amazing Double Dans will
perform one of their internationally acclaimed acts.
And if you are in the audience, please remember that reiners
like to know the crowd is having a good time, so the louder
you yell, hoot and holler, the more enthusiastic they will be.
And, at the end of the night, the four winners of the
EQUITANA youth reining heats will entertain you with
a fun quadrille.
■ 7.30pm in the John Deere Dome
EVENING PROGRAM
DAN James and Dan Steers, best known to
fans as the Double Dans, are back at
EQUITANA this year and it will be the only
time Australian audiences will have the
chance to see the boys perform together
during 2013.
As Dan James, winner of the 2008 Way of
The Horse – Australian Horsemanship
Challenge and the US horsemanship
challenge 2012 Road to the Horse colt
starting championship, has moved to
America and Dan James is busy training
horses and giving clinics across the
country, the boys don’t get the chance to
“play” together much anymore, so watch
out reining fans.
As part of the Australian Open Reining
Championships, the Double Dans will
show us some of the training that has
made Double Dan Horsemanship what it is
today.
Entertainment, education and training is
what the boys are all about and they plan
to raise the bar at EQUITANA Sydney,
adding pyrotechnics and a wonderful
performance with reining horses and fire
whips.

EQUITANA SYDNEY 2013 53
EVENING PROGRAM
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8
HIGH FLYING FRIDAY –
JUMPING AT ITS VERY BEST
EQUITANA and Equestrian Australia present the 2013 Be
the Influence Equestrian Grand Final – World Cup
Jumping.
Proudly supported by naming rights partner “Be the
Influence: Tackling Binge Drinking” and supporting
partners Gow Gates and IRT, Friday evening provides a
night of action for show jumping fans, as the Be The
Influence Equestrian Grand Final – World Cup Jumping
takes centre stage.
Eighteen of Australia’s top rider and horse combinations
will compete to determine who takes out the champion
title. Riders have spent the year battling it out through
the World Cup Series to secure one of the limited spots
on offer in the Be the Influence Equestrian Grand Final.
Riders such as Jamie Kermond, Merrick Ubank, Tom
McDermott, Billy Raymont and Sharon Slater will
provide audiences with an explosion of action as the
elite of the Australian Jumping world pit their amazing
horses against the specially designed course.
The course has been developed by world-renowned
expert, John Valance, who designs approximately 20
shows per year and has designed around 80 World Cup
qualifying competitions, major competitions such as
Sydney Royal Easter Show, Australian Championships
and Agricultural Shows.
John has used all of his considerable skills to challenge
our rider and horse combinations, so it will take both
skill and incredible timing to get through cleanly.
Jumping classes are held over a course of show jumping
obstacles, including verticals, spreads, double and triple
combinations, usually with many turns and changes of
direction.
The intent is to jump cleanly over a set course within an
allotted time. Time faults are assessed for exceeding the
time allowance.
Jumping faults are incurred for knockdowns and blatant
disobedience, such as refusals when the horse stops
before a fence or “runs out”.
Horses are allowed a limited number of refusals before
being disqualified. Placings are based on the lowest
number of points or “faults” accumulated. A horse and
rider who have not accumulated any jumping faults or
penalty points are said to have scored a “clear round.”
PLUS ENTERTAINMENT
TO KICK off the night with energy guaranteed to get our audience in the high flying mood,
EQUITANA has secured just the right entertainment – the Jelly Bean Jam Band.
Deliciously tasty, full-flavoured hits of yesteryear combined with scrumptious servings of current
chart fillers have given Jellybean Jam the recipe for success and has established them as
Australia’s hardest working corporate party act.
Non-stop medleys with tongue in cheek interpretations of the most memorable party tunes from
disco to swing, Motown to Latin, funk, rock and pop, will have you dancing in your seat.
■ 7.30pm in the John Deere Dome
54 EQUITANA SYDNEY 2013
EVENING PROGRAM
WIND UP THE EVENING WITH BREATHTAKING EXCITEMENT
After the World Cup jumping final, the high flying excitement
continues with the “Accumulator Challenge”, which provides
additional prize money for the riders who dare to take it on!
This competition takes place over eight fences with an
increasing degree of difficulty plus one Joker fence.
Bonus points are awarded as follows: one point for clearing
obstacle number one, two points for number two, three
points for number three and so on to a total of 36 points.
No point is awarded if an obstacle is knocked down. The
Accumulator is run against the clock – one round only. The
Joker fence, which is the most difficult, is placed after the
finish line.
Once the rider has crossed the finish line their time is
recorded and he or she has the choice to take on the Joker or
not. If the Joker is cleared, the rider earns double the points
of the last obstacle of the course (16 points). If the Joker is
knocked, these 16 points are deducted from the rider’s total
points.
So make sure you stay till the end of the night for this “make
or break” finish to the Be the Influence Equestrian Grand
Final – Jumping program.

EVENING PROGRAM
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9
DRESSAGE GRAND PRIX FREESTYLE SPECTACULAR
SATURDAY night should not be missed
as EQUITANA Sydney and Equestrian
Australia present the Be the Influence
Equestrian Grand Final – Dressage.
Proudly supported by naming right
partner Be the Influence: Tackling Binge
Drinking and supporting partners Gow
Gates, IRT and the Australian Sports
Commission, the event presents the
beautiful and balletic freestyle
component of the dressage
competition.
This CDI World Cup qualifier not only
demonstrates the high degree of
training and athleticism required for
this level of competition, but provides a
truly moving spectacle, as rider and
horse work together to individual music
choreography that will capture
spectator’s imagination.
The competition will be as tough as an
outstanding Australian field including:
Olympian Mary Hanna and Equestrian
Australia domestic athlete of the year
Maree Tomkinson.
As a special treat for dressage fans,
visiting UK Olympic star Carl Hester will
add a unique freestyle presentation to
the evening, with guest equine partner,
Luxor 118 – Hannoverian chestnut
gelding, owned by Gregory, Katharine
and Jane Farrell from Mulawa
Performance.
ENTERTAINMENT
OPENING our Spectacular Saturday program is the amazing The
Drum Squad, who will transport you to exotic places with world
music rhythms via a drum extravaganza designed to make everyone
want to join in the performance.
The Drum Squad will entertain with pieces such as “Jar-whoo”, a
powerful display of drumming melding American drum line tricks
with ancient African groove; “Synco”, a work inspired by the dance
rhythms of Cuba and Brazil, and “Samba, Bomba and Conga”, which
will take you on a fun filled trip to Rio.
Joining The Drum Squad is composer/performer John Fleming. John
is an award winning songwriter and vocalist known for his work in
music comedy duo Scared Weird Little Guys.

56 EQUITANA SYDNEY 2013
EVENING PROGRAM
TO MAKE it to the EQUITANA Sydney Be The
Influence Equestrian Grand Final – Dressage
competition, horse and rider combinations
have had to make it through a series of five
qualifying events which were held across the
country.
The Equestrian Grand Final concept is a great
innovation for equestrian sport in Australia
and provides riders with the chance to
perform in an international quality venue
and big crowd atmosphere.
The competition is held as a Fédération
Equestre Internationale (FEI) Pacific League
World Cup Qualifier (CDI-W) and is
conducted under FEI rules.
This year, the CDI-W Grand Prix, held on
Friday, November 8, was also a qualifier for
the World Equestrian Games 2014, so the
competition for places has been hot.
Many of Australia’s top dressage competitors
will be joining elite riders, Mary Hanna and
Maree Tompkinson in the arena tonight,
including Vanessa Way, Sheridyn Ashwood,
Mark Arthur, Nadia Coghlan, Anjanette
Harten, Sue Hearn and Jeremy Janjic.

MITAVITE WALER LEGACY SHOWCASE
EQUITANA Sydney 2013 will come to a close with the presentation of the
amazing Mitavite Waler Legacy Showcase, so make sure you stay right to the
end.
The first part of the showcase program tells the story of the Walers
themselves; the breed history and what makes them part of the Australian
Heritage.
This will include a “wild horse to tamed horse” liberty performance, a fourhorse piece on how Walers were used in colonial times, a light arms “skilled at
arms” presentation and recitation and re-enactment of the poem, Remember
the Horses and interview with author of Waler historical novels, Jill Mather, by
our MC, John Flemming.
The second part of the program focuses on our six trainers and their Walers.
Our riders will introduce their new Waler mates and explain the stories behind
their names, the challenges and ups and downs they faced training a wild horse
and show us what they have achieved with them during the past 12 months.
In addition to our Waler trainers, performers and their equine partners in the
showcase are:
