Block & Tackle / January-April 2014 H ow many times have I said that these past couple of years! We were teased with a little snow early in December. Some of the lifts are running but, too be safe, we have already cancelled our first two ski days because of the poor conditions. Sure hope we get something soon before we’re too far into our planned Penguin schedule. And remember: January can be one of the coldest months of the season so be prepared with the proper clothing so you can enjoy skiing. If you’re new to the area, skiing with the Penguins (especially on “leader” days) is a great way to familiarize yourself with our Tahoe Basin resorts and meet other members. All TYCers are welcome (your guests, too), Penguin whatever your abilities. And Ski Helmet whether you ski with the group Decale or do your own thing, you’re always invited for lunch at the designated spot. The season schedule is on line and copies at the front counter at the clubhouse. Be sure to check your e-mail on the Monday prior to each event for any changes/updates and to see if a potluck following the events. When a ski day falls on the first Friday of the month, there will not be a Penguin potluck so you can join us back at TYC, starting at 5 p.m., for the club’s monthly First Friday cocktail party with hosted hors d’hoeuvres. So do a snow dance to help make this a great ski season and to help fill up Lake Tahoe for our summer sailing. See you on the slopes. The Membership committee, chaired by Port Captain Rick Raduziner, has planned their next mailing to prospective members in Incline Village. A mailing will follow this to homeowner associations and slip renters in various marinas. The committee is also planning some major improvements in membership benefits with the addition of water sports equipment being made available to our members The Lease committee, chaired by Rear Commodore Bruce Ells, will be meeting soon with the property manager in an attempt to soften the blow of the large rent increase in 2016. To insure our continued existence we hope to have two options available for the year 2016. If we are successful in remaining in our facility, some major upgrading in the décor will be taking place. In January we will begin our search for someone to fill the vacant club manager position. Our hope is to have a person on board in February and in training. The Board of Directors, at the November meeting, approved our nomination committee. The committee consists of the chairperson, Staff Commodore Jenny Ludwig, and committee members Staff Commodore Bruce Block, Wendy Poore, Jim Mullen, and Nan Brown. I encourage any member who desires to serve on the board to please contact our General Manager, Mariana Dye, who will forward your information to the committee. We are in need of at least one volunteer. Whatever the forecast, the clubhouse is so cozy during our winter months with football on our new 80” TV, a roaring fire in the fireplace and the friendly faces of Ryan Hulstyn and Edward Torres behind the bar waiting for you to come in and check out what is new at the clubhouse. New Hospitality events: February, March and April Being your year-round clubhouse, we have plenty in store to keep you active and entertained on these winter days and nights. Our Block & Tackle cover is a sample of the fun our members are having “off the water”: NFL playoff games drawing bigger and bigger crowds (and a spontaneous cheer for the 49ers’ win over Green Bay) to a fall tour and tasting at member Bill Canihan’s award-winning vineyards in Sonoma Valley. In addition to our monthly First Friday cocktail parties, “Souper Saturdays,” and potlucks (Super NFL Playoffs Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick’s Vineyard Tour Day “McPotluck” and, Having fun in TYC’s off-the-water season hopefully, our Penguin potlucks and ski days) there are several new events on the calendar, TAHOE YACHT CLUB JANUARY - APRIL 2014 Remember, too, the Clubhouse is a great place to throw a party and all members have the opportunity to reserve the club for a private party with the rental fee waived and just a nominal cleaning fee which counts towards your annual minimum!. Our beautiful lakefront facility offers a perfect setting for a cocktail or wedding reception, rehearsal dinner, birthday party, etc. Call us at the office for date availability at 530.581.4700. We’re currently working on putting together the Block & Tackle Members Magazine for our members. Slate of Nominees: 2014 and Directors-atLarge…12 Ú On Saturday, Feb. 15, the day after Valentine’s Day, we will have a club “first”: a Beer Tasting and Crab Feed, hosted by Director Bill Mann with beer from Six Rivers Winery, salad, pasta, crab and dessert. (Check upcoming emails for full details and pricing information.) Ú New for March: a Winter Wonderland Party on Saturday, March 8, as our celebration of “Snowfest,” North Lake Tahoe’s winter carnival. Be sure not to miss this one; it’s going to be filled with surprises, a DJ for dancing, and great food from Jake’s. (And speaking of Snowfest: volunteers are welcome to help design/decorate TYC’s float for the Snowfest Parade on March 1.) Ú With Easter arriving in mid-April, we’re looking at expanding our traditional Kids’ Day of crafts and egg hunt to include a catered family-friendly Easter Party Brunch on Saturday, April 19. As I write this letter we are receiving our first significant snowfall of the year. So I find myself thinking that Penguin Ski Days are near and I’m excited. I highly recommend that you ski with this fun group. Instant friends are made on every chairlift ride. Your TYC membership is a great investment in friendships. Our membership is a diverse group of interesting people from all walks of life. Our members are fun. Participating is fun. Your TYC membership is a great investment in friendships. Using your reciprocity benefit One of many benefits as a member of the TYC is reciprocity privileges with other yacht clubs. My wife, Jill, and I recently visited Southern California and enjoyed a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner at the Newport Beach Yacht Club. They were very warm and friendly towards us. It was one of highlights of our trip. Many yacht clubs throughout the U.S. and abroad offer reciprocity privileges to us but each sets its own rules. I recommend that you call ahead and confirm that reciprocity privileges are offered and to learn about any dress code requirements. Our general manager can also send a letter of introduction on your behalf. Make sure to bring your TYC membership card on your traveling adventures and you are sure to find a safe harbor. Committee plans for the new year Our membership committee has been actively planning for 2014. We attracted 18 new members this year, falling short of our goal of 25. It is imperative that we grow our membership for the future well-being of our club’s financial and social health. Here’s what is in the works and/or already in place 1. Direct mail pieces will be sent in the spring to a targeted group of Lake Tahoe property owners from Incline Village, Nev., to Emerald Bay, Calif. 2. TYC brochures with membership applications will be distributed to all of the North and West Shore marinas and boat dealerships. 3. TYC membership information, along with our promotional DVD, is located on our home page of our web site. If you have a friend that you feel may be a TYC member candidate, please encourage them to view it at www.tahoeyc.com 4. An HTML letter has been prepared for homeowner associations to be included in their membership e-mail updates. If you are on a local HOA board or know the HOA president’s contact information, please contact me. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. 5. Key First Friday’s (which are becoming really popular) will be focused on bringing your special guests. Stay tuned for announcements. 6. We are evaluating the development of a stand-up paddle board and kayak program. 7. If you are the primary sponsor of a new member, your annual club minimum is waived. New Membership News 1. The winery, founded in 1978 by Stanford cardiovascular surgeon and world-renowned medical device inventor Dr. Thomas Fogarty, was a pioneer in the Santa Cruz Mountain appellation. What began in the 1970s as a home winemaking hobby from a small cabin in the hills west of Palo Alto has grown into a respected commercial winery high above Stanford University at 2000 feet elevation on Skyline Boulevard. Twenty five acres of Burgundian varietals are planted on the 325 acre estate, focusing on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir while nurturing small lots of Merlot, Sangiovese and other varietals. John explained some of the challenges of growing fruit in this dramatically cold environment but he (and a full house of TYC members sampling his exceptional Pinot Noir) agree it is well worth the risk. John and Evie Lockton Block & Tackle / January-April 2014 13 PICYA update Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association from Ray Holstead, TYC Delegate to PICYA TYC hosts 72 Northern California delegates for fall PICYA meeting T YC hosted the 2013 October Delegates’ meeting on Saturday, Oct. 5. Although normally held on the first Monday of each month, an exception is made when held at Tahoe, enabling delegates from the Bay Area to travel and enjoy a weekend of our incredible fall season at the Lake. My wife, Kathy, and I had the opportunity to introduce several early arriving delegates to our members at October’s First Friday. While enjoying a beverage and warm hospitality, PICYA Director Deanna Desin and Rear Commodore Liz Allison met TYC member Bill Watson and Susan Grove. I had suggested to those arriving early to see if they could tour Thunderbird Lodge and, thanks to Bill, Thunderbird Lake Tahoe Chief Executive and Curator, 12 delegates enjoyed a private tour, led by Lodge Manager Susan the following morning. On Saturday night, they couldn’t stop talking about how much they enjoyed touring Tahoe’s “Castle in the Sky,” learning about George Whittell, and seeing the Thunderbird in her boathouse. With 72 delegates in attendance, the October meeting started with cocktails at 5 p.m., followed by the call to order at 7 p.m. by PICYA Commodore Fred Rutledge, the invocation and flag salute. (Adding a bit of ‘excitment’ to the evening: we had a medical emergency when one of the delegates collapsed. General Manager Mariana Dye immediately called 911 while a delegate who is an EMT helped stabilize the situation until paramedics arrived. Fortunately the delegate is fine, going home the next day after spending the night at Tahoe Forest Hospital.) Following a delicious dinner catered in the clubhouse by Jake’s on the Lake, Commodore Tom O’Rourke welcomed everyone saying how much TYC enjoys hosting the meeting and hopes all had a good time visiting Lake Tahoe. The meeting continued with normal business, including introducing the slate of PICYA officers for 2014 before adjourning 14 Block & Tackle / January-April 2014 around 9 p.m. The delegates truly enjoy coming to Tahoe and are grateful that TYC hosts the meeting biennially. Holstead wins Delegate of the Year award The last PICYA Delegates’ Meeting of 2013 was the 48th Annual Awards Program at Encinal Yacht Club in Alameda on November 4. This is typically one of the longest meetings of the year with approving the budget and election of officers in addition to presenting approximately 15 of the 30 available awards, along with four scholarship winners. This year, three clubs – Mariposa Hunters Point, San Jose Sailing Club, and Vallejo – won the Club of the Year (COTY) with a perfect score of 250 points, earning the prestigious Five Star rating. Last year, TYC Staff Commodore Bryce Griffith won the Condon Award given for “distinguished and selfless promotion of sailing, particularly but not exclusively, to young people.”Accompanying this award is a perpetual trophy which was on display in our clubhouse until October. As a member and delegate of TYC, it was my privilege to present this year’s Condon Award to Ray Durazo, staff commodore of Half Moon Bay Yacht Club where the trophy will be proudly on display for the ensuing year. The Jo Bates Memorial Delegate of the Year Award is given to recognize “those persons who have performed outstanding and distinguished service as delegates to the assembly of PICYA which includes regular attendance, effective communication between the delegate’s club and the association, participation on PICYA working committees, and promotion of delegate’s club participation at PICYA events. Much to my surprise, I was presented with the award by last year’s recipient, Ed Stetson of Pittsburg YC. It is an honor to be recognized for my contribution of time and effort for the good of PICYA and I look forward to bringing the perpetual trophy to the clubhouse for display. Upcoming PICYA events include the Commodore’s Ball & Installation of Officers at Hilton Garden Inn, Emeryville, on January 25; Leadership Conference on March 29; and Opening Day on the Bay on Sunday, April 27. I encourage you to consider attending the Leadership Conference to learn about yacht club management, and to sign up to enjoy 2014 Opening Day aboard the California Hornblower for an incomparable view of the parade and a delightful day on San Francisco Bay. RBOC celebrates 45th year of protecting boating interests It appears that RBOC (Recreational Boaters of California) will be endorsing legislation this new year that will require boat operators to prove they have passed approved boater safety courses, either in person or online. In the past, RBOC has been concerned about “Vessel Operator Certification” legislation because it was seen as being a mechanism to just extract more dollars from boaters for nonboating purposes and was opposed to such legislation. Now that California is one of the few states in the U.S. that doesn’t require such certification, RBOC hopes that they can achieve some effective yet reasonable legislation in 2014. In 2013, RBOC celebrated its 45th year of protecting boaters’ interests. Over the years, these efforts have saved individual boaters thousands of dollars! RBOC is funded by voluntary member donations of PICYA and SCYA (Southern California Yacht Association) member clubs and a donation from Boat US. (If you are not already a member of Boat US, I encourage you to join.) RBOC is comprised of 18 Directors who serve voluntarily; nine are appointed by PICYA and nine by SCYA. A Sacramento lobbying firm, Desmond & Desmond, is retained to assist in carrying out the necessary lobbying efforts in the state capitol while providing the necessary administrative functions of the organization. The board meets four times each year with one meeting being a Legislative Day in Sacramento to meet with legislators and staff. These meetings generally alternate between Northern and Southern California as does the presidency each year. The spray and excitement of the America’s Cup continued into the fall months where skills honed over the summer were favorably utilized in the waters of San Francisco Bay. Rolex Big Boat Series and Melges 24 World Championships Dick Ferris and Richard Courcier convinced the crews of Ferris’ J-125, August Ice, and Wicked, the Farr 36 sloop steered by Courcier, to trek to the Bay for a long weekend of racing against the state-of-the-art boats in the Rolex Big Boat Series. Augmented by mercenaries impressed from Racer X, the two aquitted themselves well in a very competitive Division, racing Thursday, Sept. 26 through Sunday, Sept, 29. The event push back (because of American’s Cup 13) brought breezes significantly lighter than customary for the four-day Series which kept 107 sailing crews in 10 classes working hard to outwit each other. The St. Francis Yacht Club Big Boat Series, sailed since 1964, added Rolex Watch U.S.A. as a title sponsor in 2005. The following week, Dan Hauserman with Personal Puff participated in the Melges 24 World Championships, garnering 44th of 59 entries in this uber competitive fleet with skippers and crews from Australia to Italy. 216-boat Great Pumpkin Regatta Shortly after the races mentioned above, the always-fun Great Pumpkin Regatta was hosted by Richmond Yacht Club. In Saturday’s competition, Wicked garnered a 2nd place over three buoy races. On Sunday, Oct. 27, three Tahoe boats competed in a 216 boat pursuit race around Alcatraz and Angel Islands in breezy conditions and complete with a tanker and barge passing through the course! Personal Puff placed 40th, Commodore Bryce Griffith’s Antrim 27 Arch Angel placed 75th and Wicked came in at 86th. Golden Gate/Berkeley Midwinters and RegattaPRO Series Winter racing started well for the TYC adventurers. Racer X, carrying the usual suspects and one hijacked soul off now-idle August Ice (fondly called the XTra), was first to finish in its initial outing in the Golden Gate Midwinters. Personal Puff mirrored Racer X’s result with a 1st place in their initial Regatta PRO series with Chinook, Jim Duffy’s J-105, capturing 10th in a 16-boat division. Meanwhile, next door at the Berkeley Midwinters, Arch Angel placed 2nd in the first race of his series and stood 3rd among his 12boat Division A after the second series race.
