Newsletter Volume XXXI No. 10 April 2016 www.glendalequiltguild.org Wednesday, April 13, 2016 6:45 PM April 2016 Meeting Program At the April meeting members will be multitasking: • Watching slides assembled by Kathy Fogel of Guild members at various Guild events. • Viewing quilts … those that did not win an award. We will learn the various stories behind them…… such as first-ever quilts, not-so-great but loved quilt, family quilt, an unfinished quilt, one that was too difficult, workmanship not show quality, and any other explanation—these will be interesting! • Completing our membership survey—information that will help generate questions to be used in the next few months to ”Find the member”… who matches the description. This will be a game to help members get better acquainted. • Working on an art project to be announced at the meeting. • Enjoying cookies and popcorn that will be provided. Please bring a beverage you will enjoy. It is our hope that this meeting will be fun, that you will enjoy the activities, and the opportunity to mingle with each other. Sue Vite and Karen Millman, Program Co-Chairs The Glendale Quilt Guild Presents “A Visit with Alex” Saturday, April 16, 2016 First Congregational Church 2001 Canada Blvd, Glendale, CA More details on page 3 The President’s Block Happy Spring! It’s April and one of the most lovely times of the year in CA! Make sure to get outside and enjoy the milder weather before the heat of summer begins. How about a quilting get-together at a park with a picnic lunch? Sounds great to me! Or come join the Monday Sew group at the WAC Clubhouse. Just get out of the house and away from work for a day of quilting. It will recharge your batteries! It’s also time for “A Visit With Alex” on Saturday, April 16th. Come join us to welcome world renowned quilter and media personality, Alex Anderson! She will conduct two lectures, designed to inspire our creativity and improve our skills. Alex says she got her start on Simply Quilts while teaching at our show, so GQG has a warm spot in her heart. Don’t miss this chance to share the day with her. Alex no longer teaches at the Guild level, so we are very lucky to have her. Hopefully, you all have your tickets by now, because it’s an event you don’t want to miss! Another item of huge importance this month is the announcement of the new slate of officers by the Parliamentarian. The positions on our Board are of utmost importance to the welfare of our Guild. Did you know there are a lot of great reasons to serve on the GQG Board and Extended Board? - You will meet new friends. Get to know other people who love quilting, like you. - You will be inspired. Have impact on the selection of speakers and teachers. - Make GQG your own. Suggest ideas to make the Guild better than ever. - Shop for more fabric. Since you’ll be involved with charity quilts, special challenges and boutique items, you will obviously have to go fabric shopping. - Share a position. Make it even more fun and engage another guild member to share the duties together. - Get first-hand information. Be in the inner circle and help to shape our Guild’s future. - Commit to the group. By joining the Board, you insure it’s growth and success in the future. Your ideas and support guarantee that our Guild will be around for many years to come. We rely upon our members to make our Guild a success. - Did I mention Friends? I’ve made so many friends since joining the GQG Board. They serve to inspire me to stay involved and active in Guild business and activities, not to mention the constant inspiration to do what we love most - QUILT. Take a chance and join a committee. If interested, please come talk with me at the next meeting and explore available positions for the coming year. You won’t regret it! I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting. Until then, keep on Quilting! Questions: Kathi Coleman Wilson, email: domehikr@aol.com, phone: 818 422-8798 3 March 2016 Workshop Review B Saturday's Mac McNamara workshop became a riotous day of new techniques, free fabric (yes, Mac generously shared his stash!) and fabulous friends encouraging each other to stretch our views of quilting and take risks. Mac taught members, in a most infectiously animated way, to "make new fabric" using rotary cutters to slice gentle curves into stacked layers of contrasting fabric, shuffle the layers and resew the curves. (Quite resourceful and undemanding, he found an old cooking pot in the WAC kitchen and plopped it in the middle of the cutting table to use for scraps.) Another technique involved stacked layers, diagonal cuts, shuffling and resewing, then slicing again and resewing to "make new fabric" that resembled wonky stacked balanced blocks. After a quick lunch (yes, quilters were eager to get back to sewing) the next technique was introduced. To make "sawtooth pieces" or spikes, we stacked two contrasting rectangles, cut rectangles diagonally and sewed them together, alternating the fabrics. Then we cut diagonals across each small triangle, making spikes; then sewed these pieces together. Just when quilters thought the class was coming to an end, Mac directed us to once again use curves, this time a little less "gentle", creating wonky "childlike" fabric hearts that made us all feel like kids at play. Play is the most effective way to learn! Quilting out of bounds, laughing with friends, and a treasure trove of new quilting techniques that are truly unique: what a worthwhile, wonderful, wacky workshop! Standing & Special Committee Chairs Block of the Month (818) 241-9194 ** Need Replacement Quilter’s Department of WAC (Women’s Athletic Club of Glendale) What is black and white and all of the colors of a rainbow? The answer was found at WAC during a Saturday workshop. Master Quilter, published pattern maker, and our own guild member, Tina Curran, taught sixteen quilters how to make her original design called, "Color Blocks". There were lots of smiles, and friendships reinforced, as trading an amazing array of fabric blocks made each unique quilt "pop" with vibrant colors. Among the participants were Cathy Euler, Donna Hovartos, Denise Koch, Donna Ryan, Louise Rupp, and WAC/GQG members: Mernie Meier, Leanne Compean, Kathi Wilson, Craig Coleman, Karen Millman, Susan Edwards, Kathy Fogel, Jackie Carlos, An Burgess, Beth Hasenauer, and Cindy Abrams. Look for a future display of these quilts during the WAC April luncheon. We look forward to March’s innovative workshop with Michael McNamara titled "A Day of Techniques". "Monday Sew" continues. Please feel free to join us each Monday from 10:00 AM to 4:00PM at the WAC clubhouse, except the 3rd Monday when the time is 9:30AM to 2:00PM. (Thus is to allow set up time for the next day's assembly.) If you wish to attend this open sew gathering, just show up. No reservations needed. Happy Quilting! Colleen Shier & Susan Edwards, Chairs, Quilter’s Department of WAC, Susan Edwards, Chair, Monday Sew 5 ~ Membership ~ We currently have 146 members and five Affiliate members. Please welcome new members Bill Pelka and Norris Freed. Fifty-seven members attended the March meeting. We had two guests: Susan Washburn and Judy Sutherland. It was a fun trunk show presented by Michael McNamara. He had us all laughing at his stories. His quilts have to be seen to be believed! Membership rosters have been mailed to all of the members who did not pick one up at a meeting. We look forward to seeing you at a meeting soon! Our Quilters, Craig Coleman, Brandi Nalley, Kathy Fogel, and An Burgess worked with our Binding Angels, Donna Ryan, Nancy Condit, Joni Kellam, Alice Turner, Barbara Stuart, Lisa Burroughs, Ann Bagne, Peggy Barber, Mary Ann Andrews, Crystal Dudley, and Cathy Euler to finish 57 quilts. In addition, Annie Raycraft and Donna Ryan each donated another to bring the month’s total to 59. Margaret McNeal once again gave us a generous donation of tops made from her own stash, and Cathy McNassor continued to work her magic with the bits and pieces that have been discarded by others. Bev Underwood, Aviva Nizani, and New Member, Norris Freed, all contributed tops as well. So many of you worked so hard last June to make quilts for the Wounded Warrior Quilt Project, and we were able to contribute 21 to their cause last July. Last month we received a thank you note from the recipient of one of our quilts, a soldier from Fort Polk, Louisiana, named Brandy Goins. She wrote, “I received one of the beautiful quilts when I was injured in Afghanistan. I can never express how much it meant to me! The comfort of having something belonging to me-- made with love by you--- while alone in a foreign country, and knowing that I was receiving blessings and prayers was more than I could’ve asked for. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Keep up the good work. Each of you truly has “loving hands” and a loving heart as well. Colorful. Imaginative. Three words that attempt to describe the dozens of quilts Michael McNamara, better known as Mac, showed us at the March guild meeting. His entertaining program had us laughing along with him as he described his creations and the people in his life that inspired the quilts. His designs incorporate all kinds of fabric—from traditional yardage to tablecloths to feed sacks and beyond. Mac’s designs are also unique—traditional block patterns were only occasional elements that complemented his swirls, widgets, layering, and interesting combinations of fabrics. These quilts encouraged us to be innovative - free from the conventional must-dos. The evening with Mac was lots of fun that members so enjoyed. ` 10 Shipping Your Quilts: First of all, no shipper will cover quilts, even if you pay for extra insurance. I’ve researched this extensively. They are one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork, and are excluded in their fine print. Some shippers (including USPS) have coverage for jewelry or other high end items, but may cover only the materials and labor, or require very specific appraisals based on the artist’s previously sold work. You should have a separate homeowner’s policy rider for when the quilts are in your own possession, but most of these policies exclude quilts while in another’s possession, like during transit or shows, and may not cover machines, books, fabric stashes, etc. Grants From Walmart: WalMart has grants available to fund local projects / community needs. Every store has funds available, to learn more go to the store and find out which dept manager is in charge of the program. They are only for not-for-profit causes. The store may give cash or materials of gift certificates. Mervyns and Target are reported to have similar programs. This could be a great way to help guilds’ community outreach programs, fund philanthropy quilts, etc. Both articles by Kelly Gallagher-Abbott, SCCQG Sign up for Workshops at the General Meeting or: 1.
