Kolumba Address Kolumbastraße 4 50667 Cologne Germany http://www.kolumba.de/ . Kolumba is the art museum of the archbishopric of Cologne. As combination of place, collection and architecture it allows the visitor to experience two millennia of western culture in one building housing art from late antiquity to the present. The architecture combines the ruins of the late Gothic church St. Kolumba, the chapel “Madonna in the Ruins” (1950), the unique archaeological excavation (1973-1976), and the new building designed by the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. The warm grey brick of the massive building unite with the tuffs, basalt and bricks of the ruins. A secret garden, stone ruins, a uniquely dense archaeological site: the ruins of the gothic church in the center of rebuilt Cologne are the most impressive symbol of the city’s almost complete destruction during the Second World War. Kolumba allows visitors to immerse themselves in the presence of their memories and offers them their own experiences on their way. . Project is public! . . . . . Peek & Cloppenburg Department Store Address Schildergasse 65-67 50667 Cologne Germany . This structure by Renzo Piano is a rather strange department store in the centre of Cologne. It definitely is a landmark in the city and helps to orientate within it. It's glass façade shows high ambitions and the wooden structure which sustains the glass panels is highly sophisticated and elegant. You enter the building at its rear end and will only be able to experience it's beauty by climbing behind the stalled goods. . Project is public! . Academy of Media Arts Address Filzengraben 2 50676 Cologne Germany http://www.khm.de/ . Through a new extension, the Academy of Media Arts (Die Kunsthochschule für Medien-KHM) has an assured future at its location to the south of Cologne's inner city. A complex arrangement of uses is accommodated on a tight site in Filzgraben. Three building blocks make up the main functional units: the main building to the street with auditorium and workspaces; the studio building with film studio area and the cafeteria pavilion. The buildings surround a campus-like courtyard, which can be used for a variety or purposes, and offers terraced areas for the cafeteria pavilion. The courtyard, with its play of levels, is the identity-reinforcing middle point of the complex. It is surrounded by formally reduced, sculptural architecture, which demonstrates the strength of the monolithic. This conceptual approach is emphasised by the use of large-format Italian sandstone cladding (Pietra Sirena), full-storey high in some areas (text from website architects). . G75 Address Gereonswall 75 50668 Cologne Germany . The property of the G75 Office Building on Gereonswall 75 in Cologne is one of the typical Cologne 'interplaces'. It used to be farm land in the Middle Ages as part of the 'Kümpchenshof'. Since the Second World War it was used as a public parking lot. Strictly the new office building does not interact with its surroundings, as its own spatial characteristics and logic develops internally. The first floor is free of office use and is available to public use. The upper floors are used by the office of Schilling-Architekten. . Public access unknown! . Kranhaus 1 Rheinauhafen Address Rheinauhalbinsel 50678 Cologne Germany http://www.kranhaus1.de . A new office space, with 'spectacular' design on a unique location at the River Rhine. It is located on top of the Rheinauhafen car park, "Europe's longest underground car park", which stretches over a length of 1,600 meters under the area. . Project is not public! . . . Hotel Chelsea Address Jülicherstr 1 50674 Cologne Germany http://www.hotel-chelsea.de . An artists' hotel featuring "Artists in residence". The roof area has recently been developed in a deconstructionist style by architect Hartmut Gruhl, on top of a rather unpretentious building from the Sixties. The result of this is seven new luxury rooms. The other rooms are more ordinary and cheaper too. It looks like a sculpture on a pedesta. Some rooms have split-level, most of them with their own roof-top terrace. The oblique construction creates unusual and exciting spaces with wide views from the wall-high cantilevered windows. photo: Bjorn Utpott . Project is public! . RheinauArtOffice Address Bayenwerft 50678 Cologne Germany http://www.rheinauhafen-koeln.de/rheinauartoffice . Freigeber Architects and Schuett Architects have designed a new office space for Microsoft’s North-Rhine Westphalian, within the new development area Rheinauhafen. Essentially, the facade of the proposed building complex consists of two supporting, asymmetrical ‘belts’ which, shifted against each other, loop through the whole edifice, thus connecting two individual rhomboid building units in a sculptural way. To ensure a maximum of spatial efficiency, the external parts of the building, which are situated on a flood protection platform, were supplemented with a two-storied bridge construction. The open space under the bridge opens up a stage-like view of the docks. photo: Bjorn Utpott . City Pavilion Antoniter Church Address Schildergasse 14 50667 Cologne Germany http://www.cafe-stanton.de/ . In the middle of the busy Cologne Schildergasse stands a medieval evangelical church as quiet place. In the midst of the commercial street Schildergasse with overloaded store fronts, this place offers a moment of peace and withdrawal: the prayer, the lighting of a candle, inner reflection. Around 20,000 people walk past here every hour. The adjacent City Pavilion is located behind the church and can be reached from both sides, coming from the Schildergasse. It contains a public café (Café Stanton), an exposition place and meeting room. The cubical volume opens up to a secure rear garden with quiet intimacy. Between an ancient and modern venue the public terrace offers nice views towards the next shop-aholic destination: the Peek & Cloppenburg department store nextdoor. photo: Naomi Schiphorst . Hauptbahnhof Köln Extension Address Köln Hauptbahnhof Cologne Germany http://www.bahnhof.de/site/bahnhoefe/de/west/koeln/koel n__hbf.html . Köln Hauptbahnhof (usually translated from German as ''Cologne Central Station'', short form: Köln Hbf) is the main train station for the city of Cologne in western Germany. The station is an important local, national and international hub. On an average day, about 250,000 travellers pass by, leaving it tied with Hanover and Düsseldorf for fifth busiest station in Germany. The automatic baggage locker facility with over 1,000 located underground baggage compartments is another feature of the Cologne railway station. The station's building also hosts a large shopping mall, the Colonaden. In 1945 architect and urban planner Rudolf Schwarz called Cologne the "world's greatest heap of debris". In 1957 the station was rebuilt after the centre of the city was wiped out. Architects Schmitt and Schneider designed the new entry hall and the bowl shaped roof. In 2000 the station was renovated and expanded by Busmann + Haberer. photo: Naomi Schiphorst . Project is public! . Completion 2000 Architect Busmann + Haberer Contributed by Naomi . . . . Wallraf Richartz Museum Address Obenmarspforten 50667 Cologne Germany http://www.museenkoeln.de/wallraf-richartz-museum/ . The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud is Cologne’s oldest museum and one of the foremost picture galleries in Germany. It shows European painting from the 13th to the early 20th century and has one of the world’s leading collections of mediaeval painting, with Stefan Lochner’s “Madonna of the Rose Bower” as its greatest attraction. Other highlights include works by the Baroque masters, ranging from Rubens and Rembrandt to Murillo and Boucher, the German Romantics, French Realism, and Impressionism. A competition in 1996 for a new building between the so-called war Rathauspatz and the ruins of St. Alban was won by the Cologne architect Oswald Mathias Ungers. The new building stands on a historical basis and is of numerous witnesses to the centuries-old architectural history of this place. Excavations of a Roman temple, and medieval cellars can be seen in the basement of the museum, and behind the entrance lie the church ruins of St. Alban. photo: Naomi Schiphorst . Kunst Station St Peter Address Leonhard-Tietz-Strasse 6 50676 Cologne Germany http://www.sankt-peter-koeln.de/ . Located in the center it's the last preserved Gothic cathedral in the city, originally built (1513-1525) as a 3-aisled gallery basilica. The Romanesque west tower dates from 1170. Together with the neighboring Cecilia Church, the current Schnütgen Museum, this is the only surviving twin church plant in Cologne. Kunst-Station Sankt Peter Köln (Cologne Saint Peter Art Center) at Jesuit Church of St. Peter is almost a religious experience unto itself. It's a sensuous haven for contemporary art exhibitions from the likes of David Salle, Rosemarie Trockel, Francis Bacon, Anish Kapoor, Cindy Sherman and many others. Especially the permanent objects like 'Crucification of St. Petrus' by Peter Paul Rubens (ca 1639) combines to a meaningful unity with the modern cross altar by Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida. Religion, contemporary art and music in a simple architectural space, with a clarity of basic material selection, sophisticated lighting all correspond with the various exhibited objects. photo: Naomi Schiphorst . Museum Ludwig Address Heinrich-Böll-Platz 50667 Cologne Germany http://www.museenkoeln.de/museum-ludwig/ . The Museum Ludwig is devoted to modern art from the beginning of the 20th century. The highlight of the museum is the collection of Pop Art built up by Peter and Irene Ludwig - the largest outside the USA. In addition, the Ludwigs have bequeathed a considerable collection on the Russian avantgarde from the period from 1906 to 1930 and a collection of several hundred works by Pablo Picasso. The overall form of the building is a rhythmic east-west saw-tooth roofscape. It is divided into two halves in order to create views and direct access from the Cathedral to the Rhine, involving five different streets and squares around the museum. The spatial hierarchy continues inside. At the centre of the cross formed by the outdoor streets and squares is the foyer, from where the staircase leads to the different levels and exhibition areas. The saw-tooth roof allows an explicit northward orientation, giving evenly distributed natural north light, augmented as necessary by artificial light. photo: Naomi Schiphorst . Project is public! . WDR arcades Address Breite Straße 1 50667 Cologne Germany . The WDR arcades was designed in collaboration with Elisabeth Böhm and Peter Böhm. The WDR arcades are not a traditional shopping mall. Primarily, the modern glass building houses offices, a cafeteria and the glass studio of the Cologne-based WDR: the administrative headquarters for the West German broadcasting corporation. Another special feature is the huge post office, which is integrated into the arcades. Also you can find here clothing stores, a jeweler and a bistro. Architect Böhm is considered to be both an expressionist and post-Bauhaus architect, but he prefers to define himself as an architect who creates 'connections' between the past and the future, between the world of ideas and the physical world, between a building and its urban surroundings. His earlier projects were done mostly in molded concrete, but more recently he has begun using more steel and glass in his buildings, due to the technical advancements in both materials. . In contrast to the closed side faces of polished Nero Assoluto, on the front sides the facade is fully glazed. In front of the stacked storey of the building are also arranged two 85-square meter roof terraces with unrestricted views of the Rhine and the Cologne skyline. photo: Friedhelm Krischer .
