vice president`s message - Big Bear
 VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I had my first horse when I was a small girl in Las Vegas. Back
then I didn’t have lessons or riding clubs or friends that rode, so I
just hopped on & rode all over the desert by myself. I lost my
mare when I was 11 and shortly thereafter, my family moved to
Lake Arrowhead. I used to work at the local stables just so I could
be around horses and save enough money to buy another horse.
Unfortunately, that never materialized. As life happens, my
passion for horses and riding was put on the back burner until we
moved to Big Bear 14 years ago. After 30 years, my dream of
having a horse again came true. At first I just did trail riding,
again, by myself. Not that I am complaining, but it does get a
little boring after a while. I heard about Los Vaqueros through a friend. One day I decided to check it
out and participate in my first ever team Penning event. I was hooked! After that I participated in
horse shows, clinics, and numerous other events they sponsored. What a difference participating in
all of those activities has made in my horse and certainly my horsemanship skills. Not to mention, the
incredible friendships I have made as a result. I decided to run for the board this year because I
believe Los Vaqueros has a lot to offer to the equestrian community in Big Bear and surrounding
communities. I am excited about the upcoming season and the events we have planned. I hope that
you are too and that you will come out and join us for more fun and incredible riding opportunities.
MEMBERSHIP
Last fall it was voted upon and approved to change from a fiscal year to a calendar year. As a result,
the due date for annual membership was changed to January 1st of each year and is considered
delinquent as of March 1st of each year. If you have not yet paid your 2015 membership dues, please
do so by filling out and signing the enclosed membership application and release of liability forms.
Please send both, along with your payment made out to Los Vaqueros, to P.O. Box 1784, Big Bear City,
Ca 92314. We apologize, but the online application process is not available as we are currently
experiencing technical difficulties.
GENERAL MEETINGS
General meetings will be held the second Tuesday of each month at the Los Vaqueros Arena (weather
permitting) at 6pm. This year we would like to include guest speakers followed by a short business
meeting. We are asking our members to please submit recommendations for speakers and or topics
you would like to have at these meetings. Please contact Wendy Fraze at thefrazegroup@earthlink.net
with your ideas.
SPONSORS
We are so excited about our 2015 sponsorship program. Bruce Voigt, head of the sponsorship
committee has done an incredible job securing local and area sponsors this year. Please take the time
to review the list of sponsors and be sure to thank them for their support and in turn show your
appreciation by supporting their businesses, when and wherever possible.
PIONEER TOWN RIDE AND CAMPOUT
Our first Trail ride of the season was at Pioneer Town. We had 18 total attendees. Ten riders
participated in two different trail rides. The weather was beautiful and the trails and surrounding
landscape breadth taking. Attendees either camped at Pioneer Town Corrals or stayed at the quaint
Pioneer Town Motel. Saturday night, we were all treated to an incredible Tri Tip Dinner. We are
planning at least two more trail rides this summer so stayed tuned.
HORSES HEAD 2 TAIL EVENT – May 30th at LVRC Arena
We are so excited to be hosting our first “open arena”. This event is not just for the equestrian
community, but for the entire Big Bear Valley. We will have numerous riding demonstrations as well
as Veterinary presentations by Dr. Jacob Johnson of Mojave River Equine Veterinary. There will a
variety of booths and other fun activities for the entire family. We will have several raffles throughout
the day with some incredible gifts donated by our local businesses. So please come out and enjoy the
day and bring your friends. As we are anticipating a large crowd for this event, we could really use
some help to make it a success. If you would like to volunteer, even if only for a couple of hours,
please contact Kim Voigt or Wendy Fraze.
RANCH SORTING EVENTS
The 2015 Ranch Sorting events will be a little different than in past years. Due to the cost and
maintenance to have the cows on the Arena grounds all summer, we have decided to run 3 events (see
calendar for dates). The cows will be brought up to the Arena on Wednesday, prior to each Jackpot
Ranch Sorting Event (Sortapalooza). Sorting practice will be on Wed. and Thurs. evenings from 6 to
8pm. Cost is $20 per rider for members and $25 per rider for non-members. The fee to enter the
Sortapalooza will be $25/run up to 4 runs, with at least one run being a draw. We will have at least
two herds, possibly 3 if we get enough participants, so sign up early. This will also be a buckle series
for the top 3 riders who accumulate the highest number of cows sorted for the three events. The
buckles will be given out at the last Sortapalooza on August 15th.
BARREL BASH EVENTS
We are also pleased to announce that we will sponsor the Barrel Bash events again this year. This was
a very popular event, especially with our younger riders. There will be three events, beginning with
the first event on June 19th. Please refer to the calendar for the remaining two events and for start
time.
HORSE SHOWS
Sharon Picciolo will once again be our judge for the 2015 Horse Show season. We will have a variety
of both Western and English riding events at multiple levels. There will be classes for everyone, no
matter what level rider you are. So come out and bring your friends for a day of friendly, and fun
competition.
