2015-16 Winter - Mt. Prospect Park District
Welcome to WINTER
As President of the Park District Board of Commissioners I wanted to take this
opportunity to introduce myself and my fellow board members and share with
you the role of the board within the Park District.
The seven members of your Board of Commissioners are all long time residents of
the Park District. Speaking for myself, I have lived in the district for 54 years. At one
time or another, I believe, I have used almost every facility in the Park District.
My fellow Commissioners are also very active within the District utilizing many
facilities and programs themselves and with their families. We are all passionate
about the role of the Park District in the lives of our residents.
The Board of Commissioners is elected by the residents and oversees the general
finances and operations of the Park District. We hire the Executive Director, the CEO
if you wish, who is then responsible for staffing and the day to day operations of the
district. One of our most important functions is budget approval and oversight. The
board works with the Executive Director and staff members to ensure that projects
such as new parks and facilities, new equipment and major repairs and renovations
are completed after being thoroughly evaluated and competitively bid. We want to
make sure we get the most bang for our buck and provide you and your family with
quality parks and programs.
Steve Kurka
Board of Commissioners President
I encourage you to attend a meeting or two throughout the year to become acquainted with how your Park District
operates and what lies ahead for 2016. We value resident input and would welcome your thoughts.

(18 yr - Adult)
Beautiful blooms of every imaginable color, size and shape await
us at the Chicago Botanic Garden Orchid Show. Let’s get lost in
the rare and unusual orchids that are here, there and everywhere!
With a short drive to the garden, we’ll have plenty of time to peruse several indoor gardens, the orchids, the gift shop, and then
visit a local eatery for a bite of lunch, before heading back. Add
some color to what always seems to be a never ending winter in
Chicago! (Lunch is not included in the cost of the trip.)

Senior Programs
(Ages 55 & Up)
Badminton for Seniors
Pickleball for Seniors
Come re-learn the game you grew up with! Instruction will focus
on the basics of grip, racket positioning, forehand and backhand
shots, and serving. Then, it will progress to more advanced
skills such as smash and drop shots, as well as emphasize
court movement and accurate shot selection. Badminton rules
and game strategy used in both singles and doubles play will
be taught. While players will participate in low-impact drills to
learn new skills each week, the majority of each class will be
dedicated to recreational gameplay. This program is designed
for seniors who enjoy the fun, camaraderie, and physical fitness
benefits and mental well-being that badminton offers. All
equipment will be provided. Instructor: SportsKids.
Join the pickleball craze! Pickleball, a game that combines
elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, is sweeping
the country. Pickleball players use wooden paddles and
whiffle balls to play on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net. This low-impact sport is easier on the
knees and shoulders than tennis as it does not involve as
much running or arm strength. Pickleball is a recreational
game that is designed to encourage an active lifestyle. We
are offering two levels of beginner classes for interested
seniors who want to play this easy-to-learn game.
