#nasoSTL PRESENTED BY THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SPORTS OFFICIALS IN COOPERATION WITH THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF STATE HIGH SCHOOL ASSOCIATIONS AND THE MISSOURI STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION WWW.SPORTSOFFICIATINGSUMMIT.COM 2 IF YOU: MANAGE OR DIRECT AN OFFICIATING PROGRAM, HAVE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE OF SPORTS OFFICIALS, WANT TO BECOME A BETTER CREW CHIEF OR OFFICIAL, PLEASE READ ON. . . It was once said that the best refereed game was when you didn’t know the officials were there. This is no longer true. We are there. They know we are there. Every call, no-call and movement is recorded or documented by someone, somewhere. The data and the metrics generated feed into an evaluation system designed to measure officiating performance. Evaluations are a two-way street. On one side there is the reality of judging what officials do and using that information to make assignments, and then in retaining and releasing decisions. The other side is filled with educational opportunities. Learning about what officials do and why sets the agenda for using that knowledge to improve officiating. The 33rd annual Sports Officiating Summit, presented by NASO, is titled, “The Right Call: Evaluations and Officiating Performance.” It will be one of the most significant gatherings of sports officials to date. Designed specifically for officiating leaders, the 2015 Sports Officiating Summit will pull out all the stops to take this year’s program to new heights with sessions tailored to help you design and execute evaluation programs and increase officiating performance. The Summit presents the perfect opportunity for networking. Meet, connect and interact with more than 400 leaders who will be in attendance. Over the course of two and a half days, you will learn and know more about officiating, and meet people who can help you make a positive impact on your program or association. The Summit is the industry event of the year for officiating. That’s because the best and the brightest in officiating are on hand, connecting and sharing experiences with each other. We look forward to having you in St. Louis. Register today by visiting www.sportsofficiatingsummit.com, by calling 800-733-6100 or by mailing the registration form located on page 15. Forward, stop, back – zoom in/ zoom out, review and replay. All functions designed to evaluate play calling. Yet, what have the metrics and data collection taught us about the human dimensions of officiating? That is a vital question in need of an answer. Joe Borgia, NBA Vice President of Replay and Referee Operations, has a depth and breadth of experience in understanding the metrics within the context of the human experience. Hit the pause button. Listen to what is and what isn’t possible. SPEAKERS: 1. JOE BORGIA (NBA) 1 8:45 AM - 9:30 AM AN EVALUATION PROGRAM FOR UNDER $750: THAT WORKS! Yes, it can be done! First, we stop using tight budgets as the excuse for having a lousy or non-existent evaluation program. Second, we get creative using simple technology and human resources. Third, we focus our attention on the four or five essential responsibilities officials have to fulfill. Fourth, we reread our notes taken during this dynamic session and put them into 6 practice. That is all there is to it – with no strain on your budget. SPEAKERS: 1. MATT BENNETT (CBOA) 2. GEORGE DROUCHES (NCAA BASEBALL) 3. JOAN POWELL (PAVO) 4. TOM LOPES (MODERATOR) 1 2 3 4 9:45 AM - 10:30 AM LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY PLAY One-by-one, each speaker, with complete openness, breaks down video of a noteworthy personal call. The context, the call, the explanation, the supremely teachable moment - learn what actually happened, why the call was made or not. Frame by frame, pixel by pixel, we take an unforgettable journey into play calling, moderated by Ron Foxcroft. Only at the Summit can you experience such a presentation – watch the play, hear the words of the play caller, feel the emotion! 10:45 AM - 11:30 AM GAME CHANGERS: FRESH THINKING, NEW PRODUCTS, INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS Last year, one of the Summit’s most popular sessions! Shorter presentations, fast-paced and each focused on a topic of unique importance. Each Game Changer has been carefully selected by NASO. You will be able to attend more than one of these sessions because of the way they are timed. Each speaker has a concept or a product that in fact can be a Game Changer for you and your officiating program. Count on it! 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM THE OFFICIATING INDUSTRY LUNCHEON The annual Officiating Industry Luncheon (OIL) has developed into the largest attended event of every Summit. An elegant catered luncheon followed by remarks on the state of sports and officiating from the NFHS and from Barry Mano, president of NASO. The audience is composed of the best and brightest in the world of officiating – at all levels. This year’s luncheon will feature Master of Ceremony Jerry Markbreit. SOFTBALL SPONSORED BY 2. That has become a question on the lips of many. Have officials become more concerned about a grade or about getting the play right at the time? Are evaluators relying too much on video evidence to make post-season assignments? How do video evaluations compare to in-person evaluations? Help your evaluators and your officials focus on what matters most – great play calling, without fear or favor. It sounds over the top – analytics turning officials into robots. Overstatement, yes. Trend line, yes. Worrisome, yes. What is unmistakable is this: the evolution of officiating has done a 180 – from mostly art to mostly science. That had to happen. Technology offered up the tools. They had to be employed. Now though, plenty of bright officiating minds are asking if we have come too far – losing with each passing season, the art that was our hallmark. In what specific ways are officials better today? In what ways are they worse? We explore. though that sure is sweet. Watch and hear officials at their very best and in ways only those of us in officiating can best appreciate. It’s a wonderful way for us to enjoy the fruits of our special expertise. SPEAKERS: 1. DEAN BLANDINO (NFL) 2. LARRY YOUNG (MLB) 3. STEPHEN WALKOM (NHL) 4. KEVIN RYAN (ASA) 5. Supervisors and coordinators showcase great calls made by staff members. It is more than just getting the play right… 8 10:00 AM - 10:45 AM THE LAW, LAWSUITS AND LIABILITY LANDSCAPE The best defense is a good offense – especially when it comes to the legal rights and responsibilities held by officials. Throw in liabilities and insurance protections and you quickly understand the officiating industry has matured and has issues to resolve just like any other professional or organizational sector. This session alone can make your time at the Summit invaluable. Presented by two recognized experts: Alan Goldberger, respected as the foremost authority on sports officials and the law; Drew Smith, president of American Specialty Insurance, the country’s premiere provider of insurance to the officiating community. SPEAKERS: 1. ALAN GOLDBERGER (LEGAL EXPERT) 2. DREW SMITH (ASI) 1 2 11:00 AM - 11:45 AM UP THE ORGANIZATION: EVALUATING OFFICIATING LEADERSHIP Shelf life = short. Respect level = diminishes over time. Chips in pot = few. Abuse factor = unrelenting. So you want to lead a group of officials? Put them aside for a moment and let’s focus on managing up the food chain. What does the organizational chart portend for you. What does management want? No phone calls on Monday? No public screw-ups on your watch? Consistency? Well, how about we hear it from those in those very seats. SPEAKERS: 1. JOHN ADAMS (NCAA BASKETBALL) 2. TONY CORRENTE (NFL) 3. BEAU RUGG (OHSAA) 4. They more than most understand what being a team leader means, what is required and how to bring vision to any task. Leadership comes not by accident. STATE ASSOCIATION ANNUAL FORUM A closed-door workshop for state high school office executives and staff members – a terrific opportunity to share ideas and best practices. Topics often include: online registrations, video training, the media and officiating errors, recruitment, budgeting and much more. ADVANTAGE TO YOUR ASSOCIATION Industry leaders and officiatingorganization experts share ideas and answer questions about the operation and protection of local officials associations. Bylaws, financials, disciplinary procedures, role of board members, assigning services, insurance needs and so much more. Your opportunity to interact with seasoned and successful local leaders and ask those questions you want answered. 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM CASE STUDY: HIGH SCHOOL OFFICIATING TO WHAT STANDARD? Two high profile (public) officiating errors led to suspensions and lawsuits. The 9 errors in Oklahoma and Kentucky were indefensible, the officials devastated. Each state association properly made public its position. Now, with time on our side, what was learned? What are to be the standards by which high school officials will be judged in this age of accountability? Let’s learn from those that lived them. Heartfelt recounting by the officials will take place. State leaders will speak. Guiding principles will come forth…all-levels learning curve. SPEAKERS: 1. JULIAN TACKETT (KHSAA) 3:15 PM - 4:15 PM THEY ARE CALLED SUPERSTARS FOR A REASON An all-star cast on stage. An all-star moderator guiding and cajoling from the microphone. An unbeatable combination of vibrant, visible personalities riffing on officiating. Yes, it will be entertaining but it will be so much more. The group will bring to life, in video and in words, what it means to be operating at an elite level – big games, important calls, excellence in action. You will be captivated. 2. Join us as we celebrate the best that officiating has to offer during an elegant evening banquet. NASO is privileged to recognize the efforts of outstanding people and outstanding calls through the Gold Whistle Award and the Mel Narol Medallion Award. Bob Delany will serve as the emcee. You’ll feel enormous satisfaction and overwhelming pride in knowing you are a part of the officiating community – while at the same time helping to recognize those being honored. 10 GOLD WHISTLE AWARD ® The NASO Gold Whistle Award is given to an individual or organization for significant contributions to the betterment of sports officials and the officiating industry. This year’s honoree will be the 28th to receive the award, joining an elite group of past recipients. RECIPIENT MARCIA ALTERMAN Marcia Alterman is the 28th recipient of the award and the third woman to receive it after Emily Alexander (2010) and Marcy Weston (2008). She has been PAVO’s executive director since its formation in 1996, providing leadership and oversight to volleyball rules and officiating programs across the country. A former official and current conference coordinator, she has played a key role in developing the first NCAA women’s volleyball rulebook and developed the inaugural certification processes to support officials, having rated and evaluated more than 400 officials at the national level. She is considered a groundbreaker in volleyball and helped increase the sport’s visibility. Alterman has excelled as a volunteer speaker, panelist and clinician at the annual NASO Summit. She also has been a longtime member and active participate in the Officiating Development Alliance. She is coordinator of women’s volleyball officials for the Big Ten Conference and Conference USA, positions she has held since 1996. In addition, Alterman was named Big East Conference coordinator of women’s volleyball officials in 2009 as well as the Mid-American Conference and Horizon League in 2010, and served as NCAA women’s volleyball secretary-rules editor from 2001-11. “A primary determinant in awarding anyone NASO’s Gold Whistle Award is this: the recipient has to have a long and meaningful history of ‘shining a positive light’ on officiating,” said NASO President Barry Mano. “Further, any recipient must be someone who is held with some reverence within the officiating community of which she is a part. Marcia Alterman was an easy choice, frankly. She is one of those unique individuals who, for the past decades, has fulfilled those requirements. In some measure, Marcia is collegiate volleyball officiating. She exemplifies what it means to be committed and caring to her sport and the officiating of that sport. I count her in that select number of individuals who have made an outsized contribution to officiating at the national level, and beyond just any single sport. We are honored to have her in our midst.” 11 MEL NAROL MEDALLION AWARD® The Medallion recognizes an individual or organization that has made outstanding contributions to NASO. The award is named after Mel Narol, longtime officiating legal advocate and NASO leader. Narol received the award posthumously in 2003 and the award was then renamed to honor him. RECIPIENT PATTY VIVERITO Patty Viverito is the recipient of the 2015 Mel Narol Medallion. Viverito, senior associate commissioner of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) and former NASO board member, is the second woman to receive the award after Marcy Weston (2006). Viverito was named the Missouri Valley football’s first commissioner in September of 1982 and continues in that role. The conference was then known as the Gateway Conference. The league, which sponsored nine women’s sports and FCS football, saw its women’s programs merge with their MVC men’s counterparts in 1992. Viverito’s responsibilities include strategic planning, monitoring national matters and management of championships and compliance, serving as the primary coaches liaison for most sports. She served as the tournament director of the 2001 and 2009 NCAA Women’s Final Four. Viverito served on NASO’s Board of Directors from 1995-99 and from 2007-11, a rare two-time appointment. She currently serves on the Collegiate Women’s Sports Awards Executive Committee, which is responsible for selecting the Honda Cup winner annually. In 1996, Viverito was recognized for her contributions to collegiate athletics, when she was selected as the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic 12 Administrators Administrator of the Year. In addition, she received Professional Service Achievement Alumni Awards from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Northern Illinois University. A nationally respected administrator, Viverito has served on the prestigious NCAA Executive Committee, the NCAA Council, the Division I Women’s Basketball Committee and was chair of the NCAA Committee for Women’s Athletics and Olympic Sports Liaison Committee. Viverito has also served as a member of the CCA Executive Committee and Chair of the FCS Subcommittee of CCA, the NCAA Recruiting Task Force, the NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball and Issues Committees, the NACWAA Board (two terms), the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Board, the NACDA Board, multiple terms on NCAA Basketball Officiating Improvement Committees, the NCAA Football Academic Working Group, and the NCAA Work/Life Balance Task Force. She has an extensive background in athletic marketing and administration, formerly serving as an account executive for the Tidewater Tides minor league baseball team and as special project director at the University of Texas at Austin from 1979 to 1981. At UT, she coordinated activities for the women’s athletic program in the areas of promotion, sports information, fundraising and event management. She also serves on the board of the St. Louis-based nonprofit social circus, Circus Harmony.
