DALLAS - A panel of four courageouSpersons who have been diagnosed with AIDS and/or ARC conducted a
workshop Saturday, September6, to tell
now they are dealing with their illness,
how their friends and employers have
not dealt with it and how it has affected
their lives.
The workshop was' held at the
MCCD's Dallas Activity Center where an
eager exchange of ideas was communicated in an honest and touching
manner as the audience quizzed the
panel.
Among those sitting on the panel was
David Sharpton who told the audience,
"I had to give up my job at the suggestion of my employer after he found out
I was ill. My roommate also asked me
to move out."
Another panel member stated, "Unfortunately, there is still a lot of apathy
about AIDS here in Dallas. People are
still going out late and doing lots of
drugs."
Panelist Billy Burton agreed, adding
that "there's still a lot of fear in the community about AIDS." Burton told of how
his lover had left him.
"But actually he wasn't leaving me,
he was leaving the disease, out of fear,"
explained Burton.
Burton also said that when he first
found out he had the disease, "I felt a
great deal of anger, but mostly a lot of
fear. I was terrified that my doctor didn't
have an answer or a cure.
"I went home and cried and the first
three friends I called were dead. That's
when I went to the Oak Lawn Counseling Center," stated Burton.

Sitting on panel of Dallas persons with AIDS/ARC are (I-r)
David Sharpton, Curt Vandenberg and Billy Burton.

Panelist Curt Vandenberg said that
when he was first diagnosed with ARC,
"the company where I worked said I
couldn't come back until I tested
negative on the virus." Last April
Vandenberg was laid off and his dismissal is now under litigation. "But, my
friends have stood by me," he stated.
Doctors agree that the mental anguish of seeing friends, lovers, family
and employers desert persons with
AIDS/ARC is as bad as the disease itself.

HOUSTON - The fate of the Montrose Clinic seems uncertain as the
building housing it at 803 Hawthorne at
Stanford is now up for sale. It has been
placed on the open market.
"We must be prepared to make an immediate move," said executive director
Tom Audette. "We are looking for a location right now," he told TWT NEWS.
The building along with the property
was owned by the late Nicholas George
who willed the property to St. Michael's
Catholic Church. "They have instructed
the executor of the estate to sell the property," explained Audette.
The asking price, TWT NEWS learned,
is $160,000. Of course, in the current
depressed local real estate market
where property values are in a tailspin,
the church might settle for a lower price,
it was speculated.
It is hoped that a friendly takeover
could transpire and that the new property owner would decide to let the MonItrose Clinic stay on as a renter. Perhaps
a new owner would want to make a
gesture to the clinic, it was hoped.
Meanwhile, the search continues for
residential or commercial property
which could be leased to the clinic.
Perhaps there are those who could
make a donation to the Clinic Building
Fund to help cover the cost of a perrnanent clinic site, Audette stated.
It was stressed that the Montrose
Clinic is not for sale; only the property.
Nevertheless, the clinic has been placed on a30-dayoccupancy notice. "This
means we can be evicted or choose to
vacate the property with little warning,"
said Audette, describing it as a "critical
situation."
BRANDI WEST
GETS LIFE
IN PRISON
Entertainer Gets Maximum
Sentence in Quick Verdict
For Girlfriend's Murder.
COLDSPRING, TX - Claiming to the
end that he was innocent of murdering
his girlfriend, Clifford Youens-a.k.a
Brandi West-received
the maximum
sentence of life in prison in a sensational week-long trial that ended last Friday in this small east Texas county seat
town.
It seemed from the outset of the trial,
which began on September 8, that the
cards were stacked against Youens
because the prosecution was successful in portraying Youens as a man
of costume, deceit and illusion. As a
result, the judge and jury found it impossible to believe any of Youens'
testimony.
Gayla Staas of Dallas who covered
the trial for TWT NEWS reported, "The
jury deliberated only 45 minutes and
spent most of that time eating lunch
rather than looking at the evidence. The
jury had already made up its mind," she
observed.
Although Youens was visibly upset at
the verdict, he remained real strong in
his defense, saying, "I don't know who
killed her. All I know is that I didn't kill
her," said Youens. But the jury didn't
believe that.
Even though Youens' own testimony
cleared up many questions and cleared
him of many questionable dates, the
jury didn't believe him because the prosecution had destroyed his credibility,
Staas reported.
Evidence presented at the trial
pointed to Youens' guilt in the death of
his girlfriend, Patrice LeBlanc, whose
body was found stabbed 39 times and
floating in Lake Livingston on March 23.
Prosecutors said Youens probably
killed his roommate LeBlanc, at Greenway Oaks Condominiums in Houston,
because she rejected his love for her.
Shortly after the jurors began hearing
testimony in state district Judge Joe
Ned Dean's court, Deputy James Lyles
said that his investigation showed
yellow concrete chips and yellow and
gray paint scratches were found on
Youens' parents boat by the lake house.
The pair of concrete blocks, one
painted yellow and the other gray, were
chained to LeBlanc's body when it was
found 1,000 feet off-shore from the
marina. The conrete blocks were traced to Youens' condo in Houston.
In an attempt to prove that LeBlanc
was murdered at Youens' condo, the
prosecution produced a carpet salesman who testified that Youens paid for
new carpeting on March 10, insisting
that it be installed the same day, in order
to cover up blood stains.
A crime lab chemist said human
blood was found on a section of plywood flooring under the new carpet.
Evidence also showed that Youens had
allegedly sold some of LeBlanc's
jewelry on March 6 to pay for the new
carpeting.
Although Youens' defense attempted
to show otherwise, his fate seemed
sealed from the start as others testified.
Lenny McDaniels, a close friend of
Youens' for several years, testifed that
he found Youens' reaction odd when he
tried to discuss LeBlanc's death.
McDaniels also said thathe felt Youens
wanted to change his life to become
less of a star after he started going with
LeBlanc.
PAGE 24

And the prosecutor, in his closing
arguments, yelled and screamed, calling Youens a liar, observed Staas.
With the hopeless trial over, Youens
now faces up to 99 years in prison and
a fine not to exceed $10,000.
The official sentencing will be at 9
a.m- on Wednesday, October 8, Staas
reported. He will then be taken from the
San Antonio County Jail in Coldspring
to the state prison in Huntsville.
Will Youens appeal? Although that
seems the next step, no plans had been
set in motion as of this week, TWT NEWS
learned.

Exclusive 1WT NEWS Analysis.
TEXAS - Considering that the nation has only recently come to grips with
the AIDS crisis, it's no wonder that more
persons are now suddenly becoming increasingly health conscious and concerned about keeping their immune
systems charged up to full capacity.
And one of the best ways of staying
healthy is good nutrition, specialists
say.
As Dr. Kevin Murphyof Dallas recently said at an AIDS seminar in Oak Lawn,
"The importance of good nutrition is
glaringly obvious." And he's not the only
Texas doctor who emphasizes nutrition.
As Dr. Michael E. DeBakey of Houston's Baylor College of Medicine puts
it, "I am now convinced that proper
nutritional
practices
can have a
beneficial effect on the health of our
heart and blood vessels."
"I totally support the goals of United Sciences of America,
Inc. and I am pleased to contribute to this bold scientific
endeavor," says Dr. Michael E. DeBakey of Houston.

done.
Now that is beginning to change as
such prominent persons as heart transplant pioneer, Dr. DeBakey; nobel prize
winner in medicine, Dr. Julius Axelrod;
immunology expert and cancer researcher, Dr. Robert Good; among others,
havecollaborated to come up with the
first scientifically produced wellness
program on nutrition.
The company that has pulled this
monumental nationwide process together is United Sciences of America,
Inc.(USA).Since its start-up earlier this
year,it has known phenomenal growth,
being tagged by Wall Street as "the
fastest growing corporation in U.S.
business history."
The company now has spread into
Texas where interest is running high
among not only prospective marketers
but also among consumers at large.
TWTNEWSrecently viewed a video

The USA story was narrated by William

control formulas or other burgundy and
white bottles of complex ingredients, as
it is the result of human research by over
300 doctors' studies vigorously programmed into USA's computerized data
braintrust.
What does all this mean to the
average reader of TWT?Perhaps, at last,
science has come up with a state-of-theart formula of good nutrition and
wellness.
And that sure beats spending hundreds of dollars on assorted vitamins
and minerals taken haphazardlysomething that most doctors warn
against because all too often this can
produce a negative toxic effect on the
immune system.
TWT SEPTEMBER 19 - SEPTEMBER 515 1986
Tony Dorsett, running back of Dallas Cowboys, uses and
endorses USA's nutritional formulas.
For instance, the American swimming team is now testing one of the USA
formulas to see how it increases their
stamina. The Harvard Medical School is
now conducting ongoing testing of
another USA formula to see how it increases the cardiovascular system,
something that marathon runners like
Bill Rodgers are vitally interested in.
USA, Inc. is attempting to take the
guesswork out of what constitutes a
good nutrition program, bringing current knowledge to acritical tuming point
in vitality and stamina.
As a company spokesperson put it,
"USA has the unshakeable faith that its
nutritional products present to the.
American consumer a first-ever breakthrough nutrition package that will bring
better health and well-being
for
everyone."
With such determination, it's clear
that USA will likely avoid the problems
of some of its better-known brethren like
unbridled Herbalife.
To harness the USA power, it plans
to put together a distributorship network of 100,000 during the next year.
And that's where Texas fits into USA's
national puzzle.
Already branches are in place in such
major Texas cities as Dallas and Houston, TWTNEWShas learned. Others are
certain to follow as Texans eager to be
both successful and healthy plug into
the USA engine in the Lonestar State.

Macho Latinos
Dear TWT:
Your TWT NEWS article on the [Labor Day
weekend Statewide] Tejano's Conference
contained some "logic" that really got
me riled. " ... It is often easier to simply
say I got AIDS from IV drugs rather than
admit to being gay."
What the hell do these boys think
coming out is all about? And when
diagnosed with AIDS, your days are
numbered. Will these macho Latinos lie
till they die? The joy of knowing your
"friends" and family love you for you
make coming out worth it. And there is a
great relief in knowing you don't have to
lie.
Keep up the good work, "Tejanos." ...

DearTWT:
I'd like to suggest that you entertain
the idea of running some kind of a
"reader survey" of your female readers to
get their opinions on the necessity of
using the word "lesbian" to identify
themselves rather than simply allowing
the word "gay" to cover us all.
In most of the women's movements it
seems that one issue is to de-genderize
our language where it can be done. The
recent trend towards adding the term
"lesbian" to the names of our community
organizations seems to me to be heading
in the opposite direction. But! It does
recognize the females in our community.
Maybe they like the way it's heading. I
would just like to hear it from them ....
Michael-Tyler C. Sarlow
Fort Worth, Texas
There are definitely two schools of
thought on this controversial word-issue of
lesbians vs. gay women. Those preferring
to be called "gay women" maintain that they
find the word "lesbian" uncomplimentary
and are uncomfortable with its use. Yet,
others stand by the use of lesbian. While
there seems to be little room for comTWT SEPTEMBER 19 - SEPTEMBER 25 1986

Actively Gay?
DearTWT:
I thought Professor Ray Hill's article on
"How Actively Gay Are You?" [rwr
VIEWPOINT, Vol. 12, No. 25] really hit home
for a lot of us. It's a very true assessment
of what we must all do to push for the
rights that we as citizens of this great
country deserve.
So many of us scream injustice, but
when it comes time to act and really do
something about the injustices, we are
prone to making up excuses for not
voting, not writing that letter to protest
homophobic attitudes, or not getting
together with others to combine our
strength in attacking important issues.
Well, the time is no more critical than
now to act. We must show our resentment toward the Supreme Court for their
miscarriage of civil justice tegarding the
sodomy laws.
I think that the planned march on
Austin next spring is a great way of
showing this. I know it will turn out
bigger and better than anyone imagined
if all gay and concerned people out there
will just make a commitment of self.
What we're fighting is pre-judged
attitudes-the
very same unfounded
fears and prejudices that led to the
burning of so-called witches in Salem.
The sodomy laws are a judicial materialization of these prejudices, and that's
exactly what they are-not laws
necessary for civil existence, but
prejudices that belong back in the
seventeenth and eighteenth centuries
along with the witch burnings.
I implore all of your readers to show
the people of Texas and everywhere else
that we are not the perverted monsters
that their prejudices have led them to
believe, but normal pleasant people that
they rub elbows with every day. Protest.
Show your face. Go to the march on
Austin and hold your head up high and

be proud of what you are. You do matter,
and your votes and protest do count for
the good of the whole.

Dear TWT:
As Ray Hill has written, it is time for all
of us to register and to prepare to vote
regularly for candidates supporting us.
Most of the gay community realizes the
[Houston] mayor and councilmembers
have abandoned us, but more need to
open their eyes.
When you see the unprecedented and
undeserved harassment of gays in every
place from Memorial Park to Foley's
Northwest Mall, you will see that we also
need to institute a PAC (political action
committee) to put up some money to
help support our candidates ....
Robert Hill

Dear TWT:
The various candidates in the November election are busily producing more
yawns than anything else. However,
those active in Houston Gay Political
Caucus are not bored.
Since focusing more than ever before
on long-term plans for precinct
organization, each of us in HGPC is
aware that what we do now will influence
our success in years to come. Work we
do in election precincts will be of benefit
next year and the year after, and not just
in terms of numbers voting in each
election.
One of our goals is the election of
Republican and Democratic Precinct
Chairs. The next election date for them is
May, 1988, but the filing deadline is
February, 1988. In other words, less than
a year-and-a-half from now. As we look
for people to work in precincts, we are
also looking for precinct chair candidates
and people to attend precinct and other
Political conventions in 1988. Sixteen
months is not an excessive amount of
time for this kind of work.
As we find openly gay men and women
to run for precinct chair, we hope that we
are developing a pool of people
interested in running for other elective
Offices. There will be candidates in the
Houston Municipal Election next year
Who are openly gay. The precinct
rurr
SEPTEMBER 19 - SEPTEMBER 25 1986
organization we have in place by
November, 1987, will not only help
produce votes for these candidates, but
will also be a source of talent and
experience for the candidates'
campaigns.
We have already begun planning
strategy in one of these campaigns. This
work will begin in earnest after the first
of the year.
For the current election season, we
have made a superior effort in planning
and organizing. We are registering voters
at bars and businesses in the Montrose
area every weekend in September. (The
deadline is October 3.) We will phone
bank the week before the election. The
election newsletter which is mailed to
the entire HGPC mailing list is already in
production.
To pay for all this activity, we have two
fundraisers planned. The "Montrose High
School Homecoming Dance" will be on
Sunday afternoon, September 28, at
Heaven. We will choose a Homecoming
King and Queen. On October 25, we will
have a dinner honoring David Scondras,
the opealy gay member of the Boston
City Council. ...
At the HGPC Endorsement Meeting,
September 17, we will decide which
candidates' names will appear on our
slate card. The work to make those
endorsements effective is fascinating.
We are not bored. If you want to help,
either in the overall effort, or in your own
precinct, give us a call. Then you too will
not find this election boring.

One of the newest gay mysteries to
appear in American markets, Hard-Core
Murder comes to us from Amsterdam
(Acolyte Press) and is set in Greece. A
most improbable gay detective, Spiros
Giorgiou is a 23-year-old Greek hustler
who aspires to a more legitimate,
TUlT SEPTEMBEfI19 - SEPTEMBER

though slightly more respected, profession.
Bob Henderson, the author, has a
potentially
intriguing,
entertaining
series on his hands, but his initial installment is somewhat disappointing. Technically speaking, the case is orchestrated well, but the characters could be
fleshed out more completely. Spiros
himself could be made a more complex
personality.
Initially, he appears full of the hustler
"mindset," arrogant, disdainful, frivolous, checking out the action. His credibility as a detective, though he claims
to be licensed, is very poor. The transition from the hustler mindset to the
private investigator
mindset-IawPAGE 33
abiding, respectful, analytical, persevering--is difficult for the reader to
believe.
In fact, the story starts out as he
focuses his eye on two "lovelies"; he is
drawn to the male transvestite, rather
than to whom we find out later is the
TV's sister. Spiros is drawn to Ursula,
from Sweden, who is in Greece with his
sister to make a few more porno movies
with Big Billy Paris. Paris is a "bigname" producer of light comedy, thrillers and hard-core pornography.
When Ursula's sister, Britt, is found
brutally slashed and murdered on a
hillside, Spiros shifts moral and professional gears to help solve the murder for
Ursula. As he has aged, his happy-golucky attitude has changed as well; he
is a more sober, serious person. And
though he has "street-smarts," the
readerstill cannot help but feel he is unqualified for the job, and unable to give
Spiros her/his confidence.
If Henderson addresses these issues,
future installments will reflect Spiros'
developing and maturing personality
and outlook. Hard-Core Murder would
only benefit from characters with more
depth, from a less sensationalistic treatment, and from more involvement of the
glories and contributions of Greek
culture and philosophy. Henderson's
first effort holds an implicit promise of
entertaining things to come.

Dona Herlinda and Her Son is the
story of a five-partner marriage. There is
Dona Herlinda, a well-to-do widow and
her doctor son, Rodolfo (Marco Antonio
Trevino). There is Rodolfo's lover,
Ramon(Arturo Meza)and Rodolfo's new
bride, Olga (Leticia Lupersio) and Rodolto's son.
Dona Herlinda is happy with her successful son. They live in a nice home and
manage trips to the lake every Sunday.
So if Rodolfo wants a male lover, Dona
Herlinda isn't too upset by it all. She
evenarranges forthe loverto move into
their nice house so that her son will
spend more time at home. And for a
while it's just the three of them.
Then Dona Herlinda moves to phase
two of her plan, to have her son marry
well. Enter Olga, Dona Herlinda's personal choice for Rodolfo. They get married and soon after, Olga delivers ason.
They move in with Dona Herlinda and
now it's just the five of them. A crowded
marriage, maybe, but one that meets
everyone's needs.
Dona Herlinda is played to parakeet
perfection by Del Toro. With wonderful
flaming red hair, always neatly whisked
upon top of her head and an array of chic
clothes, Dona Herlinda is modern and
self-servingly pragmatic. Never too far
away from a plate of food or a tequilla
bottle, Dona Herlinda always has a smile
on herlips and her hand in the air calling
for the waiter. Nothing, it seems, can
upset her-or stop her from getting
another drink.
Del Toro is a newcomer to the big
screen, having acted only in a short film
by her student son which was seen by
Dona Herlinda's
director,
Jaime
Humberto Hermosillo.
Rodolfo and Ramo (Trevino and Meza)
arealso newcomers, although they had
TWT SEPTEMBER 19 - SEPTEMBER 25 1986
Arturo Meza and Marco Trevino (reflected),
done some stage work in Guadalajara,
where the film was shot. As the lovers,
they are believable and sympathetic.
Their relationship grows in a variety of
twists and turns as Dona Herlinda
manipulates them into a face-saving
triangle.
When Rodolfo returns from his
honeymoon, his present to Ramon is a
jar of Nivea cream to use during sex.
Nothing new, except that now it will be
used on Rodolfo, which had previously
been forbidden. It seems that having
proved he was a man by getting married,
Rodolfo can back off the macho image
a bit.
Olga is understandable. Lupersio
plays her with a little quiet tolerance and
a lot of focus. Olga wants to get married,
have a baby and have someone else take
care of the baby while she goes off to
grad school. With Rodolfo and Ramon
she gets everything she wants. Rodolfo
married her, and Ramon will take care of
their son.
Everyone, it seems, gets what they
want. Or at least most of what they want.
And everyone is a little wrong for it.
But as Ramon's friend tells him when
he asks her what she would do if she
were in his situation, "Me? Don't ask me,
I would kill myself. Cyanide."
Ramon doesn't kill himself. He just
goes about the business of getting most
of what he wants.

Iy October with the opening of the promising Peggy Sue Got Married, starring
Kathleen Turner, Nicolas Cage, Barry
Miller and Catherine Hicks. In this one,
Kathleen plays Peggy Sue Bodell (no
relation to Buddy Holly), a fortyish
mother of two grown children. Sounds
like a far cry from Romancing the Stone,
Crimes of Passion and Prizzi's Honor!
Anyway, Peggy Sue has a lousy marriage, but, thanks to a freakish incident
at her 25th high school reunion, she
finds herself back in the year 1960 and
faced with the opportunity to live her life
over with the benefit of her "adult"

doesn't show up in a cameo .... There's
also a slim chance that Coppola's next
epic, the controversial Gardens of
Stone, could be finished in time to
premiere in late December, which could
result in the director being in direct competition with himself for next year's slew
of Oscars. Gardens of Stone, described as both "pro-American" and "antiwar," stars James Caan, Anjelica
Huston, James Earl Jones, Dean
Stockwell, Lonette McKee and Sam Bottoms. I'll be interested to see if Griffin
O'Neal's scenes make it to the final print

has been implicated in the death of Coppola's son during filming of Gardens of

Once
again this column will be
oriented towards Houston entertainment, as I have a lot of work ahead of
me to establish pipelines in other cities
through which wonderful entertainment
happenings can be illuminated.
So, if you are an entertainer or associated with entertainment, please give
me a call or send me a note and let me
know what is going on. This column can
only be as good as the information
available to it.
HOT HUNKS AND HONEYSIN HOUSTON MUSIC. Closing on Sunday,
September 21, are the sizzling sounds
of Commercial Art at Club Flamingo.
Ably led by dynamic Barry Coffing on
keys and vocals, this group is Fun with
a capital "F." So, it's only fitting to fill
this review with F words. Commercial
Art is fine, flairful, flawless, fresh,
faceted, facile, friendly,
festive,
foudroyant, fantastic, fervant, feeling,
fashionable,
fit, fascinating
and
fabulously funky.
Although their material is heavily
weighted in the area of current pop-rock,
they have some solid originals that
might form the basis for the group's
future ascendancy.
One of the group's main attractions
is the strong contrasting styles of the
PAGE 46
two female vocalists, Valerie Johnson
and Jean July. July's gutsy get-down
power is complimented by the smooth
force of Johnson, as each of these
femme musicales moves in and out of
the spotlight.
And while Club Flamingo is on your
mind, remember that the monumental
talents of Martha Turner (with Wayne
Lyles on piano) will be showcased again
this coming Monday and Tuesday.
Starting Tuesday, September 24 (and
going through the 28th), Mercedes Benz
will be pumping out the tunes at Club
Flamingo. The group, which features
the singing talent of San Lee does a
wide variety of music, including pop, top
40, R&B and some Broadway.
TWO MORE ON THE FRONT BURNER.Jerry Atwood and Rick Comeaux are
Euphoric Heat, and that's no exageration. I caught them at Cutters this past
week and was suitably impressed.
Singer Comeaux seems like a darker,
more intense John-Boy with a voice like
the strong warmth of spring love. He
belts, croons and musically emotes
while Atwood sits, quietly maniacal,
manipulating a veritable bank of electronic musicalities, playing with fingers,
toes and even whole hands and feet.
They have an extensive song list that
will thrill the ardent cabaret-lover, but
TWT SEPTEMBER
19 - SEPTEMBER
25 1986
they wisely refrain from loading their act
with tired chestnuts. Euphoric Heat is
a refreshing musical combination that
goesbeyond the talents of each person.
Theywill be back at Cutters on September 26, 27 and 28, but you can catch
them this weekend (September 19 and
20) at Tam O'Shanter.
On last Saturday at Cutters, Atwood
was joined by Lee Aldridge and Dana
Davis, who filled in for Comeaux, who
had a prior commitment that night and
could not sing. Aldridge is very cute,
with some very nice renditions of various tunes, but he should perhaps lower
the key in some cases, as he has a

tendency to strain a bit uncomfortably
on some of his high notes. Davis is a
sultry, dynamic songstress who bears
further review. As soon as I know where
she is playing next, I will definitely share
that information with you.
LADIES OFTHE MUSICAL EVENING.
Some very popular females will grace
various stages with widely exciting
variations of style and material.
On Saturday, September 20, at the
First Unitarian Church, Channing Hall,
The Reel World String Band will bring
their joyous blend of bluegrass and contemporary folk for the first time to
Houston audiences. This is part of
Hazelwitch Productions' Fall Series, a

Other news from Rascals is that
Montgomery, Plant & Stritch will be taking a six-week break, because Plant is
havingher tonsils removed. And she has
suchnice ones! Of course, Montgomery
and Stritch could still do an act, while
Plant sat in the audience eating ice
cream. On second thought, it just
wouldn't be the same. (Good luck on the
surgery, Rebecca.)
At Lawndale Annex, on Saturday,
September 20, Trish Herrera's band,
Women with Instruments,
will be
featured as part of an exhibition of performance, literary and visual works. Also
on the 20th will be a film by Maureen
O'Malley, as well as Orson Maquelani
reading The Black Cafe and Charlie Sartwelle reading Tales of Fornication. Performance starts at 8 p.m. at the Annex,
5600 Hillman.

FINE FAIRIES FEATURE FUN. The
Miss Camp America Pageant is the
result of carrying dedicated amateur
drag to its illogical conclusion. Both as
a fund raiser and as an entertainment
event, the pageant is invariably
successful.
The members of the club all represent
the states, just as the beauties in Atlantic City represent their states. No, let me
take that back. Camp America is a much
fairer presentation, because winning is
not based on beauty, talent, intelligence
or any of those other silly qualities. It
is based on pure dumb luck.
With that in mind, BACKSTAGE would
like to congratulate this year's winner,
Joe "Evelyn" Cooney (Miss Tennessee),
who worked backstage in this year's
pageant. When he was announced as
the winner, he took his triumphant stroll
down the runway with a red robe over
his black tee-shirt and blue jeans, a glittering tiara on his sparse manly tresses
and a smile as wide as the Blue Ridge
Mountains on his mustached face.

ALICE DOES DALLAS - Happy fifth
anniversary to our friends at Oak Lawn
Records. David, Ray and their crew (see
CRUISE CAMERA photo above) consistently
support our community and we wish
them many more successful years ....
HOT TEA wishes Jeff Portell of the Fraternity a happy 30th birthday, a belated birthday to Tex Massey of TR-II and to Terry
"Pie in the Puss" Chapman who received
a special birthday "present" from Ben
Price at last weekend's Dallas Tavern
Guild Big Event. ... Speaking of the Big
Event, it raised over $2,200 for this year's
Texas Freedom Parade. Lucky Ron J. won
the raffle and will soon jet-off for some
fun in Acapulco. Congratulations! ...
JR's new manager, Lonnie Hallmark, invites all HOT TEA readers to attend the
season premiere of Dynasty this Wednesday night. It should clear up the cliffhanger. ... Don't miss Tramp Night, a
fundraiser for the OLCC, this Saturday at
Tramps, reminded manager Jimmie Bartlett ....
On the subject of fundraisers,
Arena owners Terry (I) and Vince (r)
HOT TEA
presented a check for $500 from their
"Night of 1,000 Drums" party to OlCe s
Bill Appleman. Cheers to the Arena ....
Don't miss The Flirts, live in concert on
the OP stage this Saturday night. They
were such a big hit last time they were in
Dallas that Ruby brought them "back by
popular demand." ... Meanwhile, Club
Soda nights, every Monday and Wednesday at 4001, are really packing in a
young and handsome crowd. In fact,
Kathy "PMS" Jack told HOT TEA "there's
more chicken in there than at Col.
Sanders." Kathy ought to know, she says
that Dee is "finger lickin' good." And
speaking of butch, Dana Riggs won last
weekend's Official Ms. Butch Contest at
Raye's Sassy's Club. Watch for the Miss
Four States Pageant coming there soon.
... Baby's invites you to "Go For The
Gold" next Thursday as Ginger and Dion
"Race for the Gold" preparing for MGA
'86, with Tiffany Arieagus as referee ....
Finally, Patrick's grand re-opening last
week was a big success. Manager Dan
(see photo below, I) and doorman Paul
welcomed hundreds back into their newly redecorated cruise bar. Howard Okon
told HOT TEA to watch for an all new
Chippendale-style dance show every Sunday and Thursday coming soon ....
And
guess who else is getting into the act? It's
Jim Ryan, who's threatening to become
the emcee.

will be live in concert on Heaven's stage
this Sunday night after the free drink

Spinning the records at the
Copa's Teen Night this Friday will be
deejay Chris Kelley of KRBE "Power 104"
FM....
Speaking of deejays, BRB's
David Royalty has arranged a special
Janie Frickie country music giveaway this
Friday evening ....
And this Saturday
night at Chutes, Ted and Floyd present a
leather fantasy party and contest to be
judged on originality, leather apparel and
eroticism. The next night, B-Jays Band
cranks up the excitement on the patio.
That's perky Becky (I) and lovable Johnny
shown in the CRUISE CAMERA photo below.
Yes, B-Jays Band is a hit, Sunday nights
on Chutes' patio.
HOUSTON HOteaLlNE - Not only
does JR's have a new California attitude,
it also has a new manager, hairy-chested
Reed Mitchell (I), shown in the CRUISE
CAMERA photo above with mega-club
owner, Charles Armstrong. And that's not
all that's new, as JR's also has a new
two-sided drop-down video screen to
show the season premiere of Dynasty on
this Wednesday night. ... Also new to
the party town of Houston is Mecca,
2401 San Jacinto, opening for the first
time this weekend! You'll see lots of
familiar faces like owner Dan Cain,
manager Harry Goldberg and deejay Jon
Mott. Lines will be long, so go early to
see Mecca and its new light show, new
sound, new colors and new state-of-theart look ....
Speaking of Mecca, it's
landed its first big date-the 8th anniversary private party of Fitness Exchange on
Saturday evening, October 4. Incidentally, Fitness Exchange will raffle off a
membership during the party ....
Cheers
to the AIDS Foundation which went over
the top in their $100,000 summer fundraiser drive. To celebrate topping their
goal, they'll hold a Victory Party this Sunday, 2-4 p.m. at Kindred Spirits ....
Guess who's coming to NRG for Halloween? Divine! And at NRG this Thursday, September 25, it's Debra Danburg's
birthday party and campaign fund raiser.
World-renown master-class aerobics instructor Marc Duvall will be there so
Wear your dancin' shoes.... The fab

to those who missed Saturday's
PlaySafe workshop. You should have
seen Mike Richards putting a PlaySafe
rubber on Danny Swinford's dildo. Or
was it Dan Parkhurst's? Seriously, even
though it was a fun session, there still
was much good and timely information
shared by those in attendance. It meets
on the first Saturday of every month.
Don't miss the next one. It could save
your life!

AUSTIN CASH - John Brogg missed
winning his age in cash when his license
plate, ZN9-477, was published on September 5 in rwr's Lucky License cash
giveaway! Remember, you must have a
lWT bumper sticker on your car to win.
Incidentally, lWT bumper stickers are
available in the Capitol City at both
Liberty Books and Mr. Video.
. .. And now the CRUISE CAMERA tastes
the boiling-pot delights at Snuffy's annual
Chili Cookoff. The winners were (l-r) 1st
place: French Connection, 2nd place:
Miss Ellie's 2015 and 3rd place: Paper
Moon. Later, the.first annual Ms. Chili
Cookoff contest was held. After the allimportant question, "How has chili affected my life in Texas" was answered,
Desi (see below) was chosen as the winner. That talent? Photos by Tim Ramm.
SAN ANteaONIO - Timmy's Tea: The
sixth annual Fandango party at Bonham
Exchange lived up to its name as party
goers (see CRUISE CAMERA photo above)
danced till dawn. Only at the Bonham!
Next is the second annual Jungle party
this Saturday night ....
Fall means you
can now cheer your favorite football
team on to victory every Sunday at The
Crew on big-screen TV. Followed, of
course, by Miss Kitty's famous buffet ....
The Noo Zoo hosts a fund raiser for
BOAT this Monday. Executive director
Bettie Naylor who will be on hand, says
the goal is $3,000. Remember that
BOAT, your voice in the Texas
Legislature, needs your help .... The second annual Toaster Awards will be
handed out this Wednesday at 2015-a
high camp affair featuring bar personalities from all over town on stage in
dreaded drag ....
Next Saturday, the
River City Outlaws and Snuffy's Saloon
host a Leather & Lace party. So wear
your best and meet the specially-invited
out-of-town club members ....

Eight spelunkers had a thrilling time at

a 25-foot vertical tube situated in the'rnlddle

It is sure to be repeated again.
For the month of September the group has

event call Jim at (512)452-5658.Then on Sunday, September 21, the Town Lake morning

WOMEN'S SOFTBALL
HOUSTON - The short fall season of the
Houston Women's Softball League has finally begun after a rain delay last week. If the
first game played was a preview of what is
to come, there is going to be some great softball played. In the first game, Faster Women
and the Coffee Beans tied (2-2) in heated
competition.
The second game marked the start of the
season for the summer season champions,
Marion & Lynn's Rebels. Just back from the
World Series in New Haven, Connecticut,
they were all fired up and ready for blood as
they shut out the Herricanes (11-0).
The Women's Softball League plays at
Lions Field in the Heights on 13th near
Shepherd. Games begin on Sunday morning
at 10 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. For information on the league call Carolyn at
(713)868-6256.
(606). Looks like John wants to wrap up a
trophy early in the season.
There is still room for more teams or individual bowlers in the league. Call your
friends and get a team together. Or if you
don't have any friends, join the league and
make lots of new ones. For information call
Stepleton at (713)973-1358.

The lesbian is an attorney, an
architect, or an engineer. She is
the blind poet and s0!Jgwriter.
She is the welfare recipient, an
auto mechanic, a veterlnarlan, an
alcoholic, a telephone operator,
a civil service or civil rights
worker. And, being a woman in
Western society, she is certainly a Clerk-typist, secretary, or
bookkeeper.
