In Mexico, an 11 year-old boy and his 8-year old
brother are left behind with relatives they barely
know when their widowed father goes to
‘the promised land’ to find work. We witness
snapshots of their dreams (baseball!) and fears
(devil in the mirror!) while they take care of each
other, imagine their future and navigate
a journey well beyond their years.

www.nbpd4fun.org On March 7, applications for the 10th Year Anniversary “Best of
Berwyn” were distributed to Berwyn schools, recreation organizations
and agencies. The Best of Berwyn Junior Citizen Recognition Program
is a search for the top 8th grade students within the City of Berwyn.
It’s an annual program sponsored by the North Berwyn Park District
to distinguish teens that have focused their attention towards family,
academics and bettering their community.
The initial process consists of students being nominated
through applications and letters of recommendation sent in by
Berwyn North School District 98, Elementary School District 100, The
Berwyn Library, Pav YMCA, St. Leonard School, St. Odilo School,
Police Explorers, Berwyn Park District and the Berwyn Recreation
Department.
Beginning April 11th, the judges compiled of community
leaders, teachers and public officials have the difficult task of sorting
through the applications and interviewing the candidates to determine
the person who best exemplifies the criteria for this program.
The candidates and winner will then be invited, along with their
family members, to attend the “Best of Berwyn” banquet held this year

In 2011, NBPD introduced Berwyn Super Kids, a program in which the park offers classes that will keep kids
engaged in a healthy activity from 45-60 minutes a day, Monday through Friday, during a Power Hour of programs.
The purpose behind this is so that the children develop an interest in finding activities they can enjoy that are
a diversion from the norm for them. NBPD believes that by becoming active, they will become well-rounded
individuals prone to lead healthier lifestyles as they grow up. The classes offered this Spring include Hip Hop 4
Kids, Breakdancing, Kid’s Comedy Club, Little Theater, The Linus Project, Yoga for Kids & Fitness Boot Camp 4
Kids. These classes encourage children to improve their imagination, social skills, self-expression, coordination
and most importantly their physical health. For more info on Super Kids, please call (708) 749-4900.

NORTH BERWYN PARK DISTRICT invites residents,

the 5th Annual Think GREEN Citywide Clean-Up in
Berwyn on Saturday, April 16 from 9 am – 12 noon.
Think GREEN is a year-round campaign NBPD

their daily lives in Berwyn. As part of this campaign
NBPD holds this Annual Citywide Clean-Up with the
support and assistance of Waste Management, the
City of Berwyn, Berwyn Development Corporation,
Berwyn Main Street, Berwyn schools, city officials
and residents of Berwyn.
NBPD will provide all that is necessary to clean and
beautify various locations in Berwyn and will assign
groups to such locations. Locations include various
parks, Roosevelt Road, Cermak Road/Main Street,
Depot District, Ogden Avenue & various schools. After
the clean-up, NBPD holds a “thank you” pizza lunch

Program makes for happy,

North Berwyn Park District’s
youth soccer league is
a healthy-child focused
program
that
promotes
happy, healthy kids.
Every girl and boy stepping
on a soccer field for the first
time can have fun. NBPD’s
healthy-child approach makes
it one of the finest player
development programs in
the community. Everybody
likes to win, but developing
successful
players
and
people is what’s fundamental
at NBPD.

Summer Soccer League
Location: Jefferson Field, 16th & Wenonah
(Top left to right) Richard Anzueto, Oscar Hernandez, Alex Rivera, Brian Morales, Freddy Romero,
(bottom) Dario Mesta
During the summer, you can
drive down 16th street on any
given weekend and you will
see Jefferson Field packed
with players of all ages. It
is obvious that the residents
have embraced this sport
which makes it one of the
most successful programs
at the park. Jefferson Field
is not only used for organized youth leagues but for adult, male & female leagues, as well as, just for fun
neighborhood games.
The great thing about the youth soccer program is that kids are not expected to have experience to
join, NBPD staff makes it fun for all skill levels, even beginner’s. “Children have a natural joy of running
and kicking, soccer is a sport that kids can grow up playing and enjoy for the rest of their lives,” says Raul
Carmona, Recreation Supervisor in charge of soccer programs at NBPD. In addition to running and kicking,
kids learn techniques to control the ball and work as a team. It also encourages creative decision making
and strategic thinking. And it’s a fast game that keeps each player moving the entire time. At NBPD there’s
no spending time on the bench which is what makes this a healthy-child program!

“Shaughnessy, this one is for you,” is the theme
for the 13th year anniversary of the North Berwyn Park District
and the Berwyn North District 98 Educational Foundation’s
Partner’s Classic Golf Outing in honor of former Berwyn
Mayor Thomas Shaughnessy. Since 1997, this strategic
alliance has teamed up with the City of Berwyn, Berwyn Police
Department, community businesses and organizations in the
effort to improve the quality of life and create new educational
opportunities in Berwyn.
“The 2011 Partner’s Classic Golf Outing will be
dedicated to Mayor Shaughnessy as he was a great advocate
for children’s programs in the community,” Joe Vallez said.
So far, through this annual fundraiser, the partnership
amongst governmental, educational and recreation institutions
in the community have made it possible to raise over 50,000
dollars for Berwyn’s District 98 schools.
The Partner’s Classic Golf Outing’s location has been
moved to White Pines Golf Club in Bensenville and will be
held on Friday, July 29, 2011. “Golf & Dinner” price is $125
and “Dinner Only” is $35. For tickets or sponsorship, please

announced. After lunch the group can sit back
and enjoy a little bit of the “Rat Pack” sound from
singer/impersonator, Jerry Armstrong followed
by music from the 50’s thru the 90’s performed
by the Jerry Armstrong Band. The dance floor
