Hope you all enjoyed the end of the school year and are ready for some summer nights at Globe Life Park in Arlington. Once again, the Texas Rangers ended the month of May at the top of the A.L. West Division with a 31-21 record. The Rangers completed May with another sweep of in-state rivals, the Houston Astros, and walked away with a series win against the Toronto Blue Jays when they visited Globe Life Park. We also saw the return of starting pitcher, Yu Darvish, on May 28 when the Rangers took on the Pittsburgh Pirates. After missing 14 months while recovering from Tommy John surgery, Darvish allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven. Welcome back, Yu! May 28 was also a big day for Rangers third baseman, Adrian Beltre. In the bottom of the first inning, Beltre hit a two-run homer to drive in his 1,500th and 1,501st runs. He became the 54th player in MLB history, and just the fourth third baseman to collect 1,500 RBI over his career. The other third basemen include Mike Schmidt (1,595), George Brett (1,596), and Chipper Jones (1,623). Congrats Beltre! Rangers rookie, Nomar Mazara, earned American League Rookie of the Month honors for the second month in a row. He is now the first Texas rookie to win the award twice and he is the first player to take honors in consecutive months in either league since the White Sox’ Jose Abreu in June and July of 2014. Mazara batted .283 with 7 home runs and 17 RBI over 27 games in May, leading all Major League rookies in RBI and home runs (tied with Dodgers’ Corey Seager). He led all American League rookies in batting average and on-base percentage (.319), ranking second in slugging (.491), and OPS (.809) among players with 50-or-more plate appearances. Mazara also led A.L. rookies in total bases (52), hits (30), extra-base hits (8), and runs (12). COMING UP YU DARVISH | RHP ADRIAN BELT RE | 3B NOMAR MAZARA | OF June includes series against the St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees! Make sure to check out our big events at the end of June including a pre-game recognition of the 1996 ALDS Championship Team on Tuesday, June 21, and a special ceremony for former Texas Ranger, David Murphy, on Friday, June 24. The Cavanaugh Flight Museum will also be providing a special flyover following the National Anthem on Friday, June 24.
