Chairman’s Comments
by Don Troyer
Spring is here again but I just experienced, the fact, that you can
expect different weather depending
on where you live. Carol and I
drove to Ohio and encountered a
lot of rain, snow and hail. While there I drove in
a blinding snow storm with high wind. Lots of
cars off the road. On the return trip we had 30 to
40 mph head wind for over a day. Really slowed
us down and cut the gas mileage. In Southern
California we expect 70’s, maybe a shower and a
occasional earthquake. Yes, we arrived home the
night before the April 4th earthquake.
The chapter started out the year with a
Road Tour to Laughlin. This was an easy going
tour to enjoy time with fellow Corvette owners
away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Leaving on a Wednesday had the benefit of fewer
people and favorable hotel rates. Another Corvette event started on Friday, so some stayed for
the weekend. Others went to Quartzsite, AZ for
the gem show. This event will be repeated in
2011, so plan to join in.
March 13th was the date for the annual
Spring Judged Meet. It was held this year at Corvette Mike’s in Anaheim. Seven cars were flight
judged and eleven were entered in sportsman.
Mike had a show room of Corvettes on display
and others were driven by members making for a
great show overall. We did not have a 53 to 62
entered in flight judging. This may have been the
first time in close to 60 judged meets. Last year
we judged a 53, 54 and 55. What happened to
the solid axel cars?
The Cruise to the Sun was held on April 10th
this year, one week later because of Easter. Palm
Springs was the destination as we left Corona in
the morning. Traffic was light even though Caltrans had message boards saying to expect delays. The Victor Valley Vette’s and some local
cars joined us on the grass at the Stein Mart
shopping center for the Un-Car Show. As soon as
Stein Mart opened, many of the group found
some real bargains shopping. Everyone went to
Tom Pinard’s home for a barbeque in the after
noon. It was a nice slow paced day which gave
everyone a chance to relax..
Top Flight Chapter for 2009 have been completed.
We will receive the award at the National Convention membership meeting.
A number of events have been planned for
the rest of the year. Check the calendar and the
information in this issue. The visit to the Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo will be May
22, If you have a certain car you would like to
take a ride in, this is the place. Join a caravan
from one of the starting locations, tour the museum and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.
A judging school and tech. session will be
held at GM Down Under in Costa Mesa on June
12.
A special line up of speakers has been
planned.
As reported in the last issue, the chapter
has made arrangements with Crusin’ for a Cure to
preregister chapter members again this year. The
registration form is in this issue and take note
that the chapter will contribute $10 of the fee.
The registration fees for Crusin’ for a Cure go directly to City of Hope Cancer Foundation. This
years Cruise will be on September 25 at the Orange County Fair & Event Center.
NCRS has been updating the National data
base for membership and judging along with the
web site. This has resulted in benefits for the
members and the chapters. Members can now
monitor their judging points on the web site.
Chapter judging chairman can now enter judging
results directly into the data base. Chapter membership chairman can check if a chapter member
is a member of National. This feature has affected a few members that have continued chapter membership after their National membership
has expired. The National Bylaws state that a
person must be a national member before
they can become and continue as a member
of a chapter.
The National Corvette Museum is encouraging all Corvette Clubs to have an ambassador. If
you are interested in becoming an ambassador for
the chapter contact me. The chapter still needs
someone to fill the positions of Public Relations
and Merchandising. They were explained in the
last issue. Contact me if you have interest in one
of these positions.
I would like to thank everyone that attended these events for participating and especially everyone who helped in some way to make
the events a success. The chapter has been notified that all the requirements necessary to be a

Region IX Representative Report
By Ed Vignone
I just returned from the NCRS Board of Directors meeting in
Concord NC, the site of the 2010 NCRS National Convention.
The minutes of the meeting are on page 8 and 9. Some of the
highlights of the meeting are as follows:
A multiyear Top Flight Award banner was designed. A total of 5
year award patches can be displayed on the Banner this will
alleviate the storing, maintaining and displaying a large number
of banners.
The sample design shown was accepted by the Board of Directors.
An “International Mark-of–Excellence Award” for International Chapter was presented and was accepted by the
Board of Directors. See the Judging Chairman’s Message in the Spring 2010 Corvette Restorer for details.
A Judging Owners Advisory document was presented. This Owners Advisory explains the Judging system, the duties and responsibilities of the owners and defines the terms used in the judging process. More information on this
document will be provided in the near future.
The website and database status report was presented. Great strides have taken place to be able to conduct all
data and administrative functions on our website. All judging and tab points are updated by Chapter Judging Chairmen and Regional Judging Chairman. Extensive Help files have been written to assist Membership Managers and
Judging Chairmen. One of the new features will be to register for National Conventions online. As the website is
developed you will be advised of the expanded features.
Midway USA Chapter, located in Wichita, Ks, had completed its probationary chapter requirements and was accepted as a NCRS Chapter and granted a Chapter Charter.
The move of the National Judging from Charlotte Motor Speedway to the Zmax Dragway will be explained in the
Presidents Message in the Spring 2010 Corvette Restorer. I viewed the facility and it is a very large shaded area
with park like seating throughout. Tabulating will be in suites above the stands with access by elevator.
There are a number of events scheduled this spring in Region IX.

Cover Car!
Steve & Dee Anna Shrefler’s 1960 Duntov
Going, Going, Gone,,, Sold at Barrett-Jackson 2010
Everyone knows that taking a car to the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car auction In Scottsdale Arizona is like a crap
shoot. Where is the market going? Will we get our money out of it? Will it sell high or low? Will we be sorry?
All of these thoughts went through our minds as we considered entering our 60 Vette in the auction. We talked to
the Barrett people, asked many questions and after much consideration we decided to commit.
You first submit four pictures of your vehicle with a full description. Then they evaluate the car and either accept or
reject it. After being accepted you send in a $1500 entry fee, the original unsigned title, and a Power or Attorney for
them to sell the car. So at this point the car really belongs to them. Of course if I wreck it on the way over, they
simply hand me back my original title.
Before we even arrived, we knew the day, lot number and approximate time it would go across the block. We
arrived on the Saturday before the auction and placed the Vette in the main Showcase tent. There is probably another six or eight other huge tents but they are not enclosed on the sides. Looking over the event catalog I counted
over 60 other Corvettes going up for auction and that’s about the time I started to worry. On Sunday we bought in
all the other display stuff and set up our display. On Monday I walked through all the tents and displays and it will
take most of the day to see everything. On Monday evening they had the Opening Night Gala for bidders and sellers. A huge event, bands, complimentary drinks and food from many of the local restaurants, of course all include
with your entry fee.
The auction wouldn’t start till Wednesday but the public where allowed to view cars beginning on Tuesday. It
was fun meeting people who once owned an old Corvette or just wanted to ask a million question about our car. We
handed out a ton of flyers over the week.
Then the storm from hell hit Wednesday evening, 3 or 4 inches of rain and winds up to 55 MPH. The staff evacuated all but the main bidding tent and the auction went on. (Tornado was sighted and winds were actually gusting
over 70mph and the tent is rated for 65mph continuous. I was responsible for evacuating the Showcase and the
cars inside– Editor) The Russo and Steele auction was about three miles up the freeway and they took a big hit.
Their main tents came down and the big 6 to 8 inches center poles damaged well over 100 cars, some very seriously. Thursday was more heavy rains but no problem for us other than flooded parking lots and getting from the
lots into the buildings.
Of course the weather kept some the spectators and buyers away and the prices were a little soft. Thankfully by
Friday most of the storms were passed and things started to get back to normal.
The big day finally arrived, Saturday, auction day. Yes the nerves were starting to get a little frayed. The car was
pushed out of the main tent about 1:00 pm and I drove it over to the pre-staging area. If thing were on schedule
we should go on stage between 2 and 3. But things got really backed up mainly due to a lot of charity vehicles.
It seemed like forever but we finally made it through the staging area and were getting close. The owner can drive
their car onto the stage but most don’t. I wanted to drive ours and we had a plan. The trunk was completely covered in documentation and NCRS certificates. My daughter and a good friend would bring up the hardtop and award
plaques and ribbons, Jeff Reade and I would open up the hood, trunk and then put the soft top down so that Speed
TV could really see the interior.
The bidding went crazy and before I even knew it we were over a hundred thousand. One of the head auctioneer
asked me if I was the owner and then asked me to come up by the auction table. I moved up to the next step and
he said “No I mean up here right next to the guy conducting the bidding”. I watched the bidding climb and was kind
of numb by the time it hit 135k.
It hammered down; I thanked the auctioneer and shook his hand. I wasn’t even sure what the final bid was until
I left the stage and looked back an saw 165k on the big screen. Then my cell rang and my son asked me want happened? It turned out that Speed TV had gone to a commercial break the whole time we were on stage.
The car left the stage and was moved back into the showcase tent. We picked up all our extra stuff and folding
chairs but before leaving I still had one key left in my pocket. I went over and placed the key in the glove box. It
was a sad moment; my baby was really gone, sort of like letting a child go.
Probably the most asked question is why did you sell it? Well after 5 Regionals, 2 Nationals and the Duntov, it
was time. I kept having it judged, then would bring it home and replace more parts. Change this, refinish that, find
a better part, or chase an original part. I got the car to the point where I really didn’t want to drive it anymore. Didn’t want to damage or scratch anything. It had become a Museum car and I sure didn’t want to drive it around
town. It only had 1255 miles since it was restored.
But I still have at least one more in me so now I can start on the 58 fuelie powerglide and I will drive it. What
color? Well maybe yellow, we have a lot of time to think about it. Steve and Dee Anna Shrefler

Well, we did it again; head 'em up and move 'em out - to Laughlin under the leadership of
our wagonmaster, Allen Morris.
We met, as usual, at the Kripsy Kreme in Etiwanda and
present were wagonmaster, Allen Morris, and shotgun,
Darold Shirwo & the infamous Larry Pearson, and rear
guard Ed & Barb Vignone, and the muscle of the group,
Pat & Jerry Louer with their backup force of Jan & Marv
Stober and last but not least were Sherry & Carlos
Vivas with their hot red Z06 (we had a surprise in store
for Carlos).
The weather was
perfect and there
was not much traffic on the road, especially when we got through Barstow; the plan was to
meet Norm & Shirley Shier and their pals and Peggy &
Kent Schoneman (friends of Allen from the great state
of Kansas - P.S. they left the day before the great
snows hit).
We got into Laughlin about 1 pm and Allen had made
fabulous reservations at the Tropicana (the old Ramada) - $20 per nite can you beat that.
That afternoon we all met for a quick lunch and then
everyone sort of disbursed to do their own thing.
Later that afternoon Peggy & Kent arrived and some of us dined with Allen, Kent, Peggy,
etc.
After dinner most of the gang took off to spend some
dinero and Larry and I went to the bar to listen to lots
of oldies but goodies.
The next day we all
met in the breakfast
nook and the plan
made by Allen was to
head off to Oatman
(the home of the Oatman Hotel and Clark
Gable
and
Carol
Lombard) and we
headed out on a
beautiful sunny warm
day.
When we got to Oatman we met our old time friendly
Burros; we tried to find the one that had chewed off
Carlos rear fender the time we were here for our regional but they all looked alike.
We did the usual touristy thing like shopping, picture
taking, feeding the burros and we all had lunch at the
Oatman Hotel, alas, no Gable or Lombard.

The route back was not the same and Allen had us on a
Corvette designed back road which, after a long while,
took us back into Laughlin for dinner, but before dinner we were anticipating the local car event across the
street and some of us moseyed over to the lot to see
the setup and check out some of the first arrivals..
I think Jerry had
made
arrangements for dinner
at the Tropicana
in a private room
and we were met by two of our old time buddies - the
Crocketts.
We all had a great dinner in the steak house and
again off to do the armbruster thing.
Larry & I went back to the bar and listened to more
oldies & goodies.
The next day some of the group left early but most of us hung
around for the car show and the other things you do in Laughlin.
Carlos & Sherry and Larry and I took off for Quartzite to scrounge around the Sunbirds flea
markets.
We got in Quartzite about 3 pm and spend 3 hours shopping an hopping around and it was
sad to say but there twarn't much to buy and what was there was "pricey".
Back to Laughlin and the four of us had dinner in the Italian place and met Norm and
Shirley and their friends who had just gotten married.
Last day and it was bon voyage to Laughlin and another successful SoCal road trip with
friends.

At approximately 8:30 on Saturday morning, five Corvettes belonging to members of the National Corvette Restorers Society’s Southern California Chapter rendezvoused in the parking lot of Carrows
restaurant in Corona.
After a short get together, the eleven members caravanned their
Corvettes up route 91 toward Palm Springs. The leisurely drive took them to Palm Springs Village and the site of the Un-Car Show in slightly more than one hour. Being among the first to
arrive, they acquired front row parking on
the lawn situated between The Old Creek
House Inn and the Stein Mart discount
store. The latter was as much a draw to
the area as was the show.
Shortly, the lawn was filled with cars,
mostly Corvettes. An NCRS display was set
up near the SoCal chapter’s vehicles. The
morning was spent talking to friends, looking at cars, and shopping at Stein Mart. In
the early afternoon, all participants (except
one SoCal member) went to the show promotor’s condo for a lunch of hamburgers,
hot dogs and almond salad. Most SoCal
members left for home later that afternoon.

Here’s a helpful tip for not just Corvettes.
I was working on another Chevrolet product that was in desperate need of new chrome for its worn, but still perfectly working interior plastic pieces. The fix I found was right at an office supply store. Yes, you read that correctly.
I’ll explain with some photos. I’m sorry I don’t have “before” pictures. I got carried away when I found how well
this worked and I only recently thought to share this with you.
Pictured is a thirty-five year old glove box door. In this
photo it looks to be in very nice condition. It is now, but
before there was no sign of the chrome script or the
chrome trim line across the top of the door. There was also
no sign of the chrome accent line that follows the entire
length of the dash on this particular car. What I’d also like
to point out in this example is how difficult attempting to
mask off this script might be if you were inclined to try and
paint this. The door was in fine shape except for the lack of
silvered lettering. If I were to buy just the glove box door,
this would have been $60. Then I’d still need all of the
car’s lower dash pieces to continue the rest of this missing
chrome line.
Camaro Glove Box Door
After contemplating this task, a thought came to me and I
thought I’d give it a try.
I had already purchased a silver metallic Sharpie® pen for
another purpose altogether. Seeing that the lettering on
this glove box door was raised, I thought a light touch, or
brush across the tops of the letters might improve the look
without too much mess or trouble. As you can see from
the pictures, the results are more than adequate, and the
level of difficulty is minimal.
Silver Metallic Sharpie® Pen
From here I went and tried it on my 1967’s instrument
cluster lettering. This Corvette’s letters were well worn,
and again, seeing is believing.
This may not suit the perfect restoration, but it is a vast
improvement for most anything else over worn chromed
plastic. Give it a try. If you don’t like it, you can always
clean it off with a mild solvent like rubbing alcohol. If you
do like it, an occasional touch up will keep it fresh.

The extraordinary Automobile Driving Museum is located in El Segundo, California! The Automobile
Driving Museum is among the most exceptional museums of its kind. displaying more than 70 cars of
many makes and spanning the years. The collection is beautiful as well as educational. “While visiting the
museum, not only do you have the special opportunity to view the showcased automobiles but you also
have the opportunity to sit in them to get the feel of what it was like to drive these classics. On weekend
visits, there are select automobiles that are available for our visitors over the age of 10 to ride in. It is with
excitement that we offer this opportunity to our guests. It is also what sets us apart from any other automobile museum out there. We have games and trains and will soon have an old time soda fountain. There is
definitely something for everyone here at the Automobile Driving Museum so be sure to bring the whole
family! “
