>>>TECH HOT LICKS EXHAUST HOT LICKS EXHAUST 6 7 8 Flame Thrower Kit Story by Nate Kersjes Photos by Jesse B. Nelson Hot Licks Exhaust’s Flame Thrower Kit comes with everything you need to install the kit and shoot flames out of your exhaust pipe(s). So how does it work? When the momentary switch is depressed it transfers the power from the ignition coil to the Hot Licks module. The interrupted power to the coil will allow un-burnt gas to flow through the exhaust pipe and ignite when it passes the installed spark plug. Hot Licks’ Flame Thrower Kits are designed with solid state electronic circuitry and they’re covered by a lifetime warranty. If you need a setup for duals or 2-into-1 pipes, Hot Licks offers it. Loosen and remove the footboard mounting hardware. 9 Loosen the exhaust flange nuts. Remove the footboard. 10 11 Hot Licks Exhaust Flame Thrower Kit for single pipe. Remove the rear exhaust mounting hardware. Unplug the oxygen sensor. Remove the exhaust system from the bike. 12 13 14 Drill a hole through the center punch mark. Tap the exhaust pipe for the spark plug. Thread the spark plug into the exhaust pipe. 15 16 17 Tighten the spark plug. Reinstall the exhaust system onto the bike. Install the exhaust flange nuts. Install and tighten the mounting hardware. Crimp the spade connector onto the plug wire. 21 22 23 33 34 35 Position the Hot Licks box in the saddlebag. Extend the wiring the necessary amount for the Hot Licks module. Heat shrink the wiring for a nice, clean look. Reinstall the saddlebag onto the bike. Slide the ring terminal over the spark plug tip. Thread the terminal stud onto the spark plug. 24 25 26 36 37 38 Route the wires through the grommet that the lighting wires pass through. Apply double-sided tape on the Hot Licks module. Stick the module in the desired location. 27 28 29 Drill a hole in the bag for the spark plug wire. Route the plug wire through the bag, to the module. 96 - MARCH 2012 - URBANBAGGER.COM Strip the spark plug wire. 31 32 Cut the wire to the necessary length. Tighten the terminal stud. Crimp the ring terminal onto the other end of the plug wire. Plug in the saddlebag wiring. Remove the frame ground bolt. 39 40 41 Crimp a ring terminal onto the ground wire from the Hot Licks module. Install the ring terminal onto the frame ground. Route the module’s power wire to the switch location. URBANBAGGER.COM - MARCH 2012 - 97 >>>TECH 42 Disconnect the ignition coil wiring. 45 HOT LICKS EXHAUST 43 44 Test for battery voltage with the key in the “on” position. Cut the wire that provides 12 volts to the coil. The flame thrower switch will complete the connection in the end. 46 47 54 55 Plug the spark plug cables into the ignition coil. Strip both ends of the coil power wire. Solder wire onto both halves of the power wire. Heat shrink the solder joints. AFTER HOT LICKS EXHAUST Flame Thrower Kit - Single Exhaust 48 49 50 These two wires will provide power to the coil. When the button is pushed the power will divert from the ignition coil to the Hot Licks module. Crimp spade terminals onto the power wires. Pry the switch from the switch housing. 51 52 53 Terminal (A) is the coil side of the wire from step 44, (B) is where the Hot Licks module connects, and (C) is the power side of the wire from step 44. Install two-sided tape onto the switch. Install the button onto the coil cover. 98 - MARCH 2012 - URBANBAGGER.COM Install the seat and mounting hardware. 850.473.0465 www.hotlicksexhaust.com With a twist of the throttle and push of the button, this bike is spitting fire.
