REMEMBER WHEN CHILDHOOD
WAS A TIME FOR FUN?
By Cathy Shattles Lipsett
Editor/Publisher
There are several posts making the
rounds on FaceBook and through emails
about the good old days. They are reminder
for those of us who are Baby Boomers of
what our childhood was like.
Being of a certain age, I can relate to
much of what is written. Today’s children
have so many restrictions even beyond
those imposed upon my own grown children. There are rules to make children
safer, there are technology advances to
make things easier, and there are electronics to make games more fun.
Perhaps children are safer in booster
seats until they reach puberty, but is it
really necessary? I’m all for seat belts even
though I survived childhood without them.
Don’t misunderstand. I like the safety features of cars today, and always fasten up
before starting the car. But are we taking
things too far? If it saves a life, I guess
not.
I also don’t want to give up my computer and big television. But growing up
we didn’t have computers; we had a small
black and white television; and we thought
we were very special when my sister and I
received our own television for the room we
shared. It was, of course, in black and white.
There was no cable or satellite dish and the
programming went off about midnight.
We played outside, making up imaginary games; playing baseball in the park
(and I was always the last one picked for a
team). We read books made of paper rather
than received electronically, which is still
my preferred way to read.
Our children had their own computer,
Nintendo and television in their own study
from a fairly early age. But they also played
outside and had imaginary games and board
games and read real books.
Now some of the things listed in the”
remember when” postings were a problem
for me even as a child. I was very germ
conscious then as now – I got that honestly
from my mother. So the part about drinking directly from the water hose was not so
much a part of my youth. But then I was
the oldest child of an older mother who was
also big on cleanliness and germ fighting.
Now, however, our children are born with a
bottle of hand sanitizer in their hands and a
sterile sippy cup.
The challenge for young parents today
is how, in a world of extreme government
regulation, to keep their children safe yet
give them the opportunities to run and play
and have fun. Parents have to teach their
children to use technology wisely yet keep
their imaginations to create their own fun
away from the computer. They have to
keep them safe from predators that prey on
children through their phones and emails,
yet allow them the ability to trust and make
new friends. Parents today have to be able
to give their children a childhood with freedom to run and play and imagine and, yes,
even coming in contact with germs.
Time for studying is very important;
computer time can be important; but I hope
parents also will give their children time to
absorb sunshine and kick a ball and enjoy
nature. Children today, as in the youth of
us Baby Boomers, need time to discover
real books and face-to-face conversation
and unscheduled time to think and dream
and play.

INNOVATIVE CAMPBELL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
CREATE CLOTHES OUT OF NEWSPAPER
Members of Mrs. Miki Russel’s Fashion Marketing/Merchandising classes at
Campbell High School designed and produced three dresses out of newspaper and
eclectic accessories. The three models
wearing the newspaper designs are (from
left to right) are: Janasia Berry, Risha
Nayee, Nederria Mayes
The entire fashion group who worked
on the designs are: from left to right: Jessica Hodges, Khabrea Payton, Janasia
Berry, Marisa Cobian, Risha Nayee, Shakera Smith, Nederria Mayes, Tamiko Collins, Dami Adaramola, and Charnay Riley
To create the dresses, Mrs. Russel’s
classes used a hot glue gun and tape to
attach the newspapers. The classes also
recommend newspaper as a material for
creating handbags, doll clothing, and jewelry.
The purpose of the environmentally
friendly project was to reuse materials that
would otherwise end up in landfills. The
Campbell students were inspired by American designers who have recently reused
newspapers, cans, bottles, rubber, and cardboard for clothing or building materials.
According to the Green Living Review
the average person throws away about 4
pounds of trash per day. Many of these
items could be reused in creative, innovative ways, including making clothing.

AUCTION FOR HEROES SET FOR SEPTEMBER
As the 10th anniversary of 9/11 nears,
it is a fitting time to let our firefighters and
police officers know how much we appreciate their efforts in protecting our community everyday.
Join Honorary Chair, City of Smyrna
Mayor Max Bacon, the City of Smyrna,
and area residents and businesses in celebrating and supporting our “Heroes” at
the 2nd Annual Auction for Heroes Gala
on Sept. 10, at Brawner Hall, Atlanta Road
in Smyrna.
Proceeds from the Gala benefit the
Smyrna Public Safety Foundation (SPSF),
a non-profit organization that raises funds
to support Smyrna police officers and firefighters by purchasing equipment outside
the City’s budget and funding public safety
improvements, disaster recovery support, public community outreach projects,
service awards recognition, the annual
holiday “Shop with a Hero” event for disadvantaged area children, and many other
important programs.
“This promises to become one of the
premier events in Smyrna every year,”
says Jim Carter, chair for the Auction for
Heroes Gala.
Keep updated by logging on to Facebook at Smyrna Auction for Heroes Gala,
check out the SPSF website at www.smyrnapsf.org, and follow the event each month
in Brightside, the Gala’s monthly print sponsor. For information on becoming a sponsor, donating items, or volunteering, contact

Jesus and You …
A Relationship Made In Heaven
True Christianity is not a religion. It is a close
and personal relationship with the Almighty Creator God of the Universe, the God that is, the God
who calls himself simply, “I Am,” the God who
knows each of us beer than we know ourselves.
This relationship is the answer to the mess
sinful mankind has made of the world; an environmental, economic and social mess that some
would like to blame on the Creator, but which
honest minds will acknowledge has been caused
by the creature.
To learn more, read the Bible. You might start
with Psalms in the Old Testament and John and
Hebrews in the New Testament. And Go to Church.

Where did you get that healthy glow?
We hear you believe in taking care of yourself inside and out.
That you get heart and lung cancer screenings. And that you take

SADIE DONATES
HER LOCKS OF LOVE
Sadie Grace Womack, 8 years old, began
growing her hair five years ago to be able
to donate it to a child who had hair loss
because of cancer. At three years old she
attended a Montessori school and her
teacher had cancer. When Sadie Grace
discovered that her beloved teacher had
lost her hair due to the cancer and wore
a wig made from donated hair, she decided to grow her own hair to donate,
said her mother Suzanne Womack. Sadie Grace recently donated 10 inches of
her hair to Locks of Love. Yolanda Pilgrim of Yoly’s Salon of Vinings on Atlanta Road was her salon of choice for this
very special hair cut. In this photo Sadie
Grace has her shortened hair styled by
Mrs. Pilgrim, owner of Yoly’z Salon of
Vinings. Sadie Grace is a second grade
student at Kings Springs Elementary
School in Vinings.
During your pregnancy, you took childbirth and early parenting
classes. And when your baby was born, you had your very own
team of nurses.
You even got rid of fibroid pain through the expertise of the
Fibroid Care Program.
We know your secret. And we’re
sharing it so everyone can now say,
“Hello, WellStar.”
We believe in life well-lived.

Each year Belmont Hills Elementary in Smyrna celebrates Dr. Seuss’ birthday with

Fish, Blue Fish, the slimy Oobleck in Bartholomew and the Oobleck, a bean bag toss
with Ten Apples up On Top, and of course it wouldn’t be a celebration of Seuss books
