The Pierson High School CPR Instructors traveled to Albany with the American Heart Association to discuss teaching CPR in schools. CPR is still not mandated in schools in NY and the
survival rate of an out of hospital cardiac arrest is only 11% as compared to Washington
State where CPR is taught in schools, the survival rate is 50%!
The students met with several lawmakers including Assemblyman Fred Thiele, taught
"hands only" CPR to many people during the day and were introduced on the floor of the
senate. The students who attended were: Amber Pagano, Hope Denon, Ron Aucupina, Lilah
Yardley, Catherine Musnicki, Daja Scarlato, Holly Zappola, Katrina Cafiso and Jon Paul
Sadowsky.
CPR Instructors Hope Denon and Lilah Yardley were guest speakers for the SHES First Aid
Club. Hope and Lilah taught the students how to make sure the scene is safe, to check if the
person is ok, to call 911 and to perform CPR as well as answering many interesting
questions!

Student Highlights
Ronald Aucapina Sets a Great Example
Ronald Aucapina is a true example to the many fine students that have
traveled down this road at Sag Harbor Schools. He was an ESL Student in
his Elementary years, where he demonstrated perseverance and dedicated work. When we recognized this last week, his Elementary Principal,
Mr. Matt Malone, his ESL Teacher, Mrs. Donna Milazzo, wholeheartedly
made very positive comments, and expressed sincere joy that Ronald
had been at Sag Harbor Elementary School. In High School, Ronald has
averaged a score above 93 for the FOUR years.
I have to say that we have shown Ronald that he can be an example
to other Spanish-speaking students that are not at his academic level.
Ronald has taken on this task, and as a Honors Student, as is common
practice for Honors students to TUTOR other students, with the Assistance of Ms. Toby Marienfeld, we have guided Ronald to tutor other ESL
and Spanish-speaking students. Ronald has thrived doing this. I am tremendously proud of him for doing this. I know
that kids listen to other kids before they listen to adults. I believe that Ronald has set forth his footprints here at
Pierson, and a bar for others to work towards !
Pierson Senior Emily Verneuille
On May 22nd, East End classical musicians performed
in the fourth Katy's Courage Benefit at Bay Street
Theatre. Maxfield Panish, Leo Panish, Benjamin Pereira on
violin, Chris Beroes-Haigis on cello, Grant Kusick on guitar,
Ella Patrick on piano, Nathaniel Sassoon on piano and voice
and Emily Verneuille on clarinet.
Emily Verneuille began studying clarinet at age 9 with
Lisa Rice at the Sag Harbor Elementary School. As a
seventh grader she began playing with the Sag Harbor
Community Band, and she continues to play with them
today.
In 2009, during her freshman year of high school, she auditioned for the Suffolk Principal Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and began traveling to Sachem East High School each
week for rehearsals. The summer preceding her junior year she toured Central and Eastern
Europe with MYO performing at the Mozarteum in Austria and Esterházy Palace in Slovakia.
During her junior year she retired her first clarinet, Clara, and purchased Clarence, a
Buffet R13, who currently is her partner on stage. On May 19th she performs with MYO at
Carnegie Hall for the second time. Her experience includes a dazzling MYO performance at
Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall last June. Aside from the clarinet, she also plays the bass
clarinet and, more recently, the alto saxophone. Emily will attend SUNY Geneseo next year
to pursue a career using her mathematical skills but will be sure to find time to play Clarence on campus.
Good luck Emily with your future musical experiences. Bravo!!
Pre-Prom Presentation
Students who will be attending the 2012 Pierson Prom will have the opportunity to attend
the Pre-Prom Presentation that will take place on June 5th at 7pm in the Pierson Auditorium.
Students who attend will receive a discounted prom ticket price obtained from the Pre-Prom
Presentation Fund that the PTSA will collect from Sag Harbor Community donations. In order
to receive the discount, students must have a parent attend with them. Last year participating students received a $30.00 discount!
Kym Laube, Director of HUGS will be our presenter along with her husband, Carey, who is a
police officer. Kym will discuss the negative effects that drinking and drug use have on teenagers and why they don't mix with Prom night. Carey discusses the Host Liquor Liability laws
that New York State has adopted. These are known as the “Social Host Laws ( see below for
details of this law).
Please do not miss out on this very important presentation. The PTSA hopes to see all
prom attendees and their parents there!
Did You Know? Suffolk County has a "Social Host Law"
The primary purpose of the Social Host Law is to deter underage drinking parties where
adults knowingly allow minors to drink alcoholic beverages. The law applies to any adult
(including parents) who is over the age of 18 and who knowingly allows consumption of alcohol by minors (any person under the age of 21).
Who can be charged?
- Anyone who is over the age of 18
- Owns, rents or otherwise controls a private residence or similar residence
- Knowingly allows the consumption of alcohol by any minor on such premises
- Fails to take reasonable corrective action upon learning of the consumption of alcohol by
any minor on such premises
What is "Reasonable Corrective Action"?
- Making a prompt demand that the minor stop drinking the alcoholic beverages or leave the
premises
- If the minor refuses to comply with the request, the adult must promptly report the
derage drinking to
un-
- local law enforcement
- or to any other person with greater degree of authority over the minor (i.e. the minors
parents or guardians, etc.)
What are the Penalties?
1st Offence: $500.oo
2nd Offence: $1,000 and/or up to a year in jail
Why is this Law Needed?
This law provides a legal basis for holding adults responsible for knowingly allowing parties
of youths under 21 to occur at a place under their control, whether or not they provide
alcohol.
