Gala 2014 - Connecticut Yankee Council
Campfires & Candlelight Gala 2014 Conn necticut Y Yankee Co oun unci cil l In Memory and Eternal Appreciation Jack Berry (1942-2014) Scoutmaster, Troop 36 Westport Connecticut Yankee Council Board of Directors Vice President of Program “A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be different, because I was important in the life of a boy.” – Forest E. Witcraft The Connecticut Yankee Council will carry out the mission of the Boy Scouts of America in every community in our Council by providing leadership opportunities for all youth through quality programs, mentoring from trained adult volunteers and ongoing learning and personal development through outdoor experiences. We serve nearly 12,800 youth members and over 4,200 adult volunteer leaders within five separate age-appropriate programs in Fairfield and New Haven counties and the town of Southington in Hartford county. The Scout Oath On my honor, I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight. The Scout Law A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, Reverent. Campfires & Candlelight Gala 2014 The Connecticut Yankee Council The Connecticut Yankee Council’s mission is to deliver the promise of Scouting through high-quality programs and services in the 37 communities of Fairfield and New Haven counties. We partner with over 250 community based organizations to serve 12,800 young people annually through the dedication of over 4,200 trained adult volunteers and a year-round staff of 22 professionals. Scouting serves young people from first grade through their 21st birthday with programs ranging from Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing to career-based Exploring. Our primary classroom is the outdoors. Nature provides the laboratory to test skills, develop leadership and practice teamwork. We are proud stewards of five camp properties throughout the state, serving more than 3,000 young people for summer resident and day camp programs, and thousands more year-round. Maintaining our camps and upgrading our facilities are always essential to our program. Funds raised by the CYC Gala, which you have so generously supported, will be used for this purpose. With the support of friends like you, Scouting will continue to develop youth into productive citizens whose values will impact their communities in so many positive ways. We are well positioned achieve our mission: to serve others by helping to instill values in young people and in other ways to prepare them to make ethical choices over their lifetime to achieve their full potential. Thank you joining us tonight for our third annual CYC Gala. Connecticut Yankee Council Campfires & Candlelight Gala 2014 Welcome Friends & Supporters We welcome you to Connecticut Yankee Council’s Campfire & Candlelight Gala. This is a special evening of celebration to support council camps which are such an integral part of the Boy Scout program. Tonight we gather to prepare for the future. Your support of our council camps will provide the physical structure our camping programs require to develop youth into good citizens who will be able to meet every challenge set before them. This event would not be possible without the dedication of our tireless volunteers who have worked to make this a wonderful evening, beginning with our Gala Committee. We are especially grateful for the support of our Council Board, District Leaders and Unit Leaders, many of whom are in attendance tonight to join in Scouting fellowship and the spirit of fundraising. This Council has consistently delivered outstanding programs for our youth. In order to deliver these programs, our camps need to be kept up to date with the latest safety measures and innovative activities available to our youth. The generosity of people like you is what makes Scouting possible for youth. We hope you enjoy the special evening we have planned for you. Thomas Brett West Stanley Zimmerman Campfires & Candlelight Gala 2014 President’s Message Thank you for joining us for the Connecticut Yankee Council’s Campfires & Candlelight Gala. This event is truly special because it is specifically designed to directly support our camps. Together, we will be able to provide a first-class camping experience to the young people we are privileged to serve. We especially want to express our appreciation to the co-chairs of this event, Sally Berry and Barbara King, as well as their committee. The commitment of volunteers like you is what makes Scouting possible. Your support today is critical to help provide quality Scouting programs to more than 12,800 youth in New Haven and Fairfield counties. Tonight, we are reminded of two things: first – that each one of us, volunteers and Scouts, are the ambassadors for Scouting’s programs, and second – that our purpose tonight is to provide a legacy of strong outdoor programs in our Council. Tonight, we are building the legacy of a new generation of Scouts. We know that it all begins with a good Cub Scout experience. We are broadening our reach to families who have not been part of the Scouting tradition but will benefit so much from it. We are reaching out to our communities and ensuring that every youth has the opportunity to benefit from the Scouting program. Our vision for the future is as ambitious and clear as it has been for over 100 years. Our dream is to improve the world one youth at a time. We recognize that our growth and success depends on our ability to meet challenges in a society that is ever changing. We are facing our challenges head on and with your help we will succeed. The combination of legacy and vision will ensure the Connecticut Yankee Council is well positioned to achieve its goals for all the youth that we serve. We look to the future knowing we will do our best to develop good citizens who will be the leaders of tomorrow. Thank you for all that you do to support Scouting. Yours in Scouting, Michael Abrahamson, Council President Connecticut Yankee Council “Do A Good Turn Daily.” Join the Scouts of the Connecticut Yankee Council as we strive to make a difference in our communities through our Scouting for Food drive this spring. www.ctyankee.org Thank you Connecticut Yankee Council for all you do for our Scouts.
