Issue 19 February/March 2007 Local news from Cold Ashby, Cottesbrooke, Guilsborough, Hollowell, Teeton & Thornby www.villagelink.org.uk Could you rise to the challenge? Guilsborough Youth Club needs leader Liz and Sue have set up and run Guilsborough Youth club for the past 5 years. Due to pressures of work they now need to find a successor to take over. Youth club occurs once a month usually the last Friday or as close to that date as possible. The children undertake a variety of activities during the year, some in the village hall others out and about in the local area. All work is voluntary. If you are interested please phone Liz (740428) or Sue (740916) who would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Scouts seek help Can you spare a couple of hours a week? Spratton Scout Group are urgently seeking a female leader / scouter / helper (well, to be honest, we would welcome any additional leaders but in particular, a female) to assist us with scouts, once a week, usually on Thursday evenings, 7.15 to 9.15, school term time only. We really are a very friendly bunch with a varied and interesting program for the scouts. If you would like to find out more, please contact Graham Smith on 01604 847176. School launches website Teachers, parents, governors and the children of Guilsborough Primary School have been working hard over the past few weeks to create our new website. We will be updating on a regular basis with the latest news from the classrooms, school office and after-school clubs. Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent. This day is one of the moveable feasts in the church calendar and is directly related to the date on which Easter falls. The name Shrove comes from the old word "shrive" which means to confess. On Shrove Tuesday, in the Middle Ages, people used to confess their sins so that they were forgiven before the season of Lent began. Delia’s Pancake Recipe Ingredients For the pancake mixture: 110g/4oz plain flour, sifted pinch of salt 2 eggs 200ml/7fl oz milk mixed with 75ml/3fl oz water 50g/2oz butter To serve: caster sugar lemon juice lemon wedges To serve, sprinkle each pancake with freshly squeezed lemon juice and caster sugar, fold in half, then in half again to form triangles, or else simply roll them up. Serve sprinkled with a little more sugar and lemon juice and extra sections of lemon. 2 TRAVEL TOKENS Do people remember the travel tokens that were issued by Daventry Council and are no longer issued? Have you got some tucked away at the back of a drawer or cupboard that you have no use for? I could utilise them for people requiring visits to health centres, surgeries and hospitals. If you can locate any tokens and wish them to go to a good home, please drop them into your local surgery for the attention of Sue Dobson (district nurse) or leave your name and telephone number and I will arrange for them to be collected. Thank you. Sue Dobson (District Nurse) How to cut your risk from vehicle crime Theft from vehicles is a preventable crime – leave nothing in your car means nothing for criminals to take. Top tips to beat vehicle crime are: Never leave any property at all in your car, even if you will just be away for a few moments Always lock your vehicle, and never leave it with the keys in the ignition – criminals target filling stations, the school run and other places where drivers are tempted to do this Keep your car keys safe and out of sight when you are at home Fit a detachable radio or radio fascia and remember to take it with you Park in a garage if you can and make sure it is secure, with heavy-duty locks and alarmed if possible Entertaining the Children Half term and Beyond Some ideas to amuse the younger ones include 1. Why not treat them to an outing to the Derngate with options for all tastes Secure your bike away, putting it in a garage or shed and then using a heavy-duty lock or chain to fix it to an anchor point Basil Brush—Monday 12th Feb 2pm and 4pm The Chuckle Brothers—Saturday 31st Mar Fit a secondary security device to your vehicle Noddy—Friday 13th Apr—Sun 15th Apr Never leave your driving documents in the vehicle How about a creative trip to Lollipops Pottery and painting studio & Coffee Shop in Leicester (344 Welford Road, Leicester) Open Tues—Sat 10am—6pm, and Sun 11am— 3pm, allow your child to paint from a wide choice of ceramics, and they will glaze and fire it ready for you to collect. www.lollipopsltd.co.uk/ 3. Never leave your motorcycle in your driveway where thieves can spot it and return to target it later Remember – CHECK that you have parked in a safe place and that you have left nothing in your vehicle…..REMOVE everything from inside and take it with you……SECURE your vehicle, shutting windows, locking the door and setting the alarm Tracy Beaker—Tuesday 6th Feb—Saturday 10th Feb (Evenings and Matinees) 2. Contact Football in the Community Coach on 0870 7778199 to book a place HIGH TECH THEFTS The latest in-car technology gadgets are the latest temptation for criminals in the county. Removable satellite navigation systems have been the target of criminals, with 39 having been stolen in the year between September 04 and August 05. While this may seem relatively few, the number of thefts has increased significantly since May 2005. As this new technology becomes more widespread, police are again reminding people to remove everything they can from their car when they leave the vehicle – and never be tempted to leave items in the boot or glove box. Force Community Safety Advisor Mike Franklin said: ―New technological advances always bring new opportunities for criminals and satellite navigation systems, particularly the new removable systems, are becoming increasingly popular items for car criminals to steal. ―But if a criminal can remove them, so can the owner and the secret to preventing this crime is to remove the item before the thief gets the chance.‖ Mike said ―motorists should always detach these systems wherever possible and remove from the vehicle completely. Items left in the boot or in the glove box remain vulnerable to theft‖. 3 'Spring Forward' and 'Fall Back' - that's how to remember when to change the clocks. All funds raised went to the church. “ eyes down for a full house ! “ Cottesbrooke according to Wikipedia, the free on-line encyclopedia Cottesbrooke is a village in the Daventry district of Northamptonshire. The village is small, being home to only approximately 50 persons. The estate was bought by the Langham baronets, a family of London turkey merchants, in 1637, previously belonging to the Saunders family. The estate was sold in 1911 to Lord Gerald Wellesley, brother to the Duke of Wellington and again in the 1930s to the current owners, the MacDonald-Buchanan family. TO ALL COTTESBROOKE RESIDENTS, IF YOU HAVE ANY CONTRIBUTIONS—FORTHCOMING EVENTS, VILLAGE NEWS, INTERESTING PHOTOS, PERSONAL REQUESTS, INFORMATION OR OBSERVATIONS , NEW ARRIVALS, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR CORRESPONDENT RACHELLE ROBERTS ON 01604 505258 or EMAIL RACHELLE@RACHELLEROBERTS.CO.UK THANKS ! Louis and Joe – colouring competition winners. All Saints is a long, cruciform church of circa 1300, except that the North transcept has been demolished. Much restoration has been carried out on the building, most recently in 1959-60. The West tower has two-light Y-traced bellopenings supported by circular mullions, well preserved shafting on the interior windows with capitals, both carved and plain. The nave roof has a ceiling, the painted imitationplasterwork in the covings being of interest, believed to be 18th century work. During the last restoration, the plaster ceilings in the chancel and the remaining South trancept were removed, exposing roof timbers from the 15th century. The church boasts one of the finest examples of a three-tier PULPIT in the county, if not the whole country, and is fitted with fine BOX PEWS. This Georgian work is complemented by a STAIRCASE with fine balusters leading to the Squire's pew in the South transcept of similar date. The small 'squint', with delicately carved hoodmoulding, in the junction between the chancel and the South transcept is worth notice. Guilsborough Church has new path to improve access We reported in the last edition of Village Link that you may have noticed that the original cobbled path leading to the church porch has been replaced by a new surface. In case you have not seen this, we include a photo (see below). Over the years, heavy rain has caused flooding on the south side of the church which was harming the footings of the building and making the pathway treacherous and unstable. Since the Church of England’s recent requirement to improve access for the disabled, the cobbles needed to be removed. As a result of a large amount of fund-raising, the church has been able to carry out the work to lay new drains and to resurface the path with Clearmac Macadam, decorated either side with brickwork and cobbles. The architect pronounced the final result as one of his best achievements. We hope you agree. 8 GUILSBOROUGH NEWS Guilsborough School makes Tabloid Front Page News!! Bob the Builder & SpongeBob Squarepants also came along to help, to the delight of the smaller children. The festive group travelled in a decorated sleigh pulled by Allen’s Fowler steam engine ‘Kingfisher’ crewed by Robin Lewis and Dave Phelps, who should receive special thanks, as unlike the rest of the crew, they were unable to accept the liquid hospitality provided by generous villagers. (They did do We all know that Santa has a sooty job, popping up and justice to the mince pies and other goodies though!) Thanks down chimneys as he does, but he manages to keep smut- also to Ian Brown & his Jolly Red Tractor which helped on free in a way that his little helpers from Hollowell Steam the hills, & to those who got up especially early to light the failed to do! engine and decorate the sleigh, despite partying late the night before! Whilst all this was enormous fun and made Christmas very special for those who had a visit from Santa, there was a more serious purpose behind all the jollity. The Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance also benefited to the tune of £340 in donations from Hollowell & Coton, and also passing motorists who cheerfully helped to fill the collection tin. The Air Ambulance is not government funded but is a Charity relying on voluntary donations, & provides medical care at a speed that is often vital for the survival of their patients. At least two families in Hollowell have reason to be grateful for the service. Finally cold, tired and slightly tipsy, Santa’s motley crew returned to Allen’s home to end a wonderful day in the traditional manner, as Allen’s wife Jane had spent the morning preparing mouth-watering Christmas fare for the hungry crew! 10 HOLLOWELL & TEETON NEWS HAVING A PARTY OR NEED A VENUE FOR A MEETING? It was a wonderful blend of local talent, with our church choir and GMADS, and initiative, bringing in the Nene Consort and Dermot Crehan with his unusual musical instruments. And it raised an invaluable £885 for the church. Many thanks indeed. All our churches would benefit from such initiatives, and most do from time to time. The commentary has been kindly provided by Eva Farey. “When I saw this picture, it brought back memories from my childhood. I lived in one of these cottages in Neaton Lane, which started in Nortoft and ended at a gate to the field behind the Old Vicarage. There were six thatched cottages situated in the first part of the lane with a brick path running behind the first four. Opposite each was a shed which housed the outside lavatory and water had to be fetched from a single pump at the end of this path. The other two cottages had a similar arrangement but shared a well for their water. None of them had electricity. The gardens for all the cottages were contained in a plot adjacent to the end cottage. Some tenants kept pigs and/or chickens on their garden.
