Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard, Monash University, 100 Clyde Road, Berwick, VIC 3806 PO Box 1036, Narre Warren VIC 3805 Phone: 03 8762 4600 Email: nossal.hs@edumail.vic.gov.au www.nossalhs.vic.edu.au From the Principal’s Desk - Mr Roger Page Dear Parents, “Principal for a Day” On Tuesday August 12 we will host our second “Principal for a Day.” PFDAS is an annual event where schools are encouraged to make links with prominent, interesting and inspiring members of the community who will spend the day at the school to share their expertise and experience and to learn more about what goes on in our schools. It is an excellent program, and Nossal receives a number of requests each year from community members who are interested in linking specifically with us. For our first foray into this we of course selected Sir Gustav Nossal in 2013, who was an exceedingly generous and expansive Principal, sharing much of his time and expertise with our staff and students, and happily offering the teachers huge pay increases and additional holidays to the students. Needless to say they were considerably disappointed when I resumed the Principal role and was unable to deliver on his promises…… Principal for a Day gives a wide range of community and business leaders from all walks of life a first-hand experience of a normal day in a Victorian government school. Many business and community leaders are “repeat” participants, including high-profile people such as: The Hon Ted Baillieu, former Liberal Leader; David Zerman, Executive Director of Possibility Australia; Dr Rob Moodie, Chair National Health Preventative Taskforce; Alex Malley, Chief Executive, CPA Australia; Sharon Butler, Consultant, Silent Partners; Ian Curley, Executive Chef, The European Restaurants; Timothy Hart, Museum Victoria; Sarah Barzel, Director Possibility Australia; Jason Kimberley, CEO, Cool Australia, Scott Rossetti, Mayor, Wellington Shire Council, Anthony Sterpin, CEO, PSW Pty Ltd. Prominent new PFADs participating for the first time in 2013 included: Sir Gustav Nossal; Margaret Shiel, Provost, University of Melbourne; Malcolm (Jock) Menzel, Victoria Police, Superintendent, Divisional Commander of Eastern Region Division 5, Morwell; The Hon Daniel Andrews, Leader of the Opposition; Mandy Burns, CEO, Ardoch Youth Foundation; Jane Rocca, Fashionista, The Weekly Review; Susan Allen, Executive General Manager, RACV; Nurin Veis, Scienceworks as well as several Members of Parliament and local government Councillors. Next Tuesday we will be joined by David Zerman the Executive Director of Possibility Australia. David’s career in journalism, public relations and fundraising has taken him all over Australia and to many countries overseas. As Executive Director of the Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation he headed a team of 7 professional staff and 320 volunteers who raised more than $5Million and provided 24 volunteer programs for the 700,000 patients at Victoria’s first and Australia’s busiest hospital. Prior to establishing Possibility Australia, David was CEO of the Victorian Section of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) of Australia, The Flying Doctor Foundation and Friends of the Australian Flying Doctor Service (in America). In 2004, an independent survey conducted by Readers’ Digest named the RFDS as Australia’s most trusted charity. Under David’s leadership the RFDS become the first ISO Quality Certified Not-For-Profit fundraising organization in Victoria. David, who has completed both the Executive Program for Non-profit Leaders at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business (2004) and the Senior Executive Leadership Program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government (2000), has postgraduate qualifications from Deakin, Melbourne and Monash Universities in Media Studies, Public Policy and International and Comparative Law. As well, he is the first Australian to be awarded a Certificate in Fund Raising Management from Indiana University’s Centre on Philanthropy, which awarded him an inaugural Dove Fellowship - the only non American to be awarded this Fellowship. David, who is a Fellow of both the Fundraising Institute of Australia (FIA) and the Australian Institute of Management is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is a Past National President of the FIA and is a Nationally Accredited Trainer in Australia. David has participated in the Principal for a Day program since 2003, and we look forward to welcoming him to Nossal and sharing experiences and information with him. Parents and Friends I must commend the PFA for their enthusiasm and excellent work at the recent Careers and Pathways Expo and for the forthcoming Trivia Night. It was wonderful to see so many of them engaging with other parents, collecting surveys and raffle tickets and fundraising for the school. More importantly they were able to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere as they served coffee and tea and greeted parents and community members. Parents Paula Goldman, Peter van Diepen and (alumni parent)Trudi Dicker in particular have done an outstanding job (among many others from the PFA) leading the Trivia night planning and they have amassed a remarkable range of prizes, gifts and auction items for the evening. It should be a most enjoyable evening and all participants should be able to secure some great prizes as well. Please come along and support this initiative. All funds raised are being directed towards the construction of a permanent community BBQ area for the school that can be used for whole school events as well as special activities and community programs. Please also support those organisations that have freely provided donated goods and services for the evening. Emerald Rotary Club Raffle My thanks to the majority of students who have returned their tickets. By the time you read this I hope to have secured the remaining outstanding tickets and they will have been sent off to Emerald for inclusion in the draw. Good luck to all who have purchased tickets – I am really hoping to see a Nossal member win the car this year – but even if that doesn’t happen, at this stage it looks like the staff and students have raised over $3500 for the school through the sales and purchases of the tickets. We are indebted to the Emerald Rotary Club and Ferntree Gully Nissan for their generosity and for including Nossal in this event again this year. Transit Police and Berwick Station I have been contacted by the Victorian Transit Police who are about to target Berwick Station to enforce the rules and regulations relating to safety when crossing the railway lines. They are hoping to speak to our students at an assembly to give them a final warning about the potentially dire consequences of inattention or deliberately ignoring the rules, before the plainclothes officers appear and begin to issue fines to anyone found not following the rules. They have a zero tolerance policy, so if you are seen breaching the law, they are required to issue you with a fine ($350 minimum) They are wanting to ensure the students are aware of the safety campaign around trains that the government is currently conducting, and that we have fair warning about the police blitz. I have assured them that the Nossal students have had numerous warnings and cautions about the station and know exactly what is required, so should not be surprised if fined when doing the wrong thing. Jynx and I have been interviewed by the local newspaper as part of the safety campaign, and to help highlight the specific dangers Nossal students face at Berwick station. Traffic Safety and Parent Pick Up I have become quite concerned about car congestion at the front of the school at the end of the day. This is caused by parents who are parking in areas where it is not advisable, nor safe to do so, as it impedes other traffic, forces student pedestrians and cars into close proximity, and causes anger and frustration. We have erected additional signage in the bus bay area which most parents are taking notice off, but have a number of people who continue to ignore the signs or road rules and are placing our students in danger. Obviously we will not tolerate this and will be speaking directly to offenders and may have to look limiting access to the bus bay and adjacent roadways through the use of a boom gate or changing the access roads to one way to clean up traffic flow. Jason Bell (our Facilities Manager) has been speaking with parents in the bus bay area after school and I’m rather embarrassed to say that some have been quite inconsiderate and rude in response. Not what I would expect from any members of our school community, and particularly when the safety of our students should always be paramount. This is an issue that has been brought to my attention on a number of occasions now and I seek your assistance in resolving it immediately. Please note: • • • • • • • There are many parking spaces available in the northern carpark and students can safely access the area through the northern building. Waiting (in your car) in the gravel Monash carpark near the hangars provides and safe and easy entry and exit away from the crowds and congestion. Disabled parking spaces are for people who need disabled access to the school – we currently have several injured students who have mobility issues and their parents need to collect them from the designated disabled space. Please do not park there to collect your child if they do not have any mobility issues, even if you have a disabled permit for yourself and your car. (unless you need to access the school yourself at that time) Please do not park on the right hand side of the bus bay. (as per the signs) Please do not park along the road between the gym and the soccer pitch (on either side) – this is the area of greatest concern as it blocks traffic coming from the carpark and narrows the access to a single lane, right where large numbers of students are trying to cross. Do not park anywhere on the raised walkway at the tee intersection outside Nossal – be aware that both areas where the roadway is raised and paved are “Shared Zones,” meaning no standing at all, and cars must give way to all pedestrians on, or crossing the road. When exiting the northern carpark, please turn left and exit via the gravel road past the hangars, then back onto Sir Gustav Nossal Boulevard or left into Intrepid Street. That way the traffic will flow much more effectively and safely (as long as no-one parks alongside the gym roadway) I thank you for your assistance and support with this. Roger Page 5/8/14 Assistant Principal - Ms Sue Harrap Careers and Pathways Expo – Wednesday, July 23 We were very impressed by the number of families and students who came along to the Careers and Pathways Expo on Wednesday 23rd July. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the community members who volunteered their time to speak about their careers and experiences, including the 2013 graduates. We would also like to make a special mention of Jenny Troung, Shane Ly and Max Dicker who came along and supervised the front of house and coordinated the student volunteers; we are most appreciative of their commitment to the school and hope that successive generations take the time and care to make such a contribution. It was a very successful afternoon and evening which included for the first time, the broader educational community in the Berwick/Pakenham area, with students from other schools also taking advantage of the opportunity to discuss courses with the Tertiary Providers who came along. Another big thankyou goes to the PFA who had a significant and welcoming presence throughout the night. We hope that students and parents had their eyes opened to diverse and interesting careers and pathways out there for consideration. Course Counselling Day – Wednesday, August 6 As you read this we will have completed the bulk of our individual course counselling appointments for 2015 subject selections. The staff worked with students from 8 am through to 8 pm. Hopefully they have found some clarity about the choices they make. We ask that parents support the school by sending consistent messages to their children about following their strengths and passions rather than pushing them into pathways that they may not be interested or successful in. Those who do not secure appointments on Wednesday 6th can come out of classes for appointments on the 8th, 12th and 13th until we have completed them all. Reports to Parents in 2015 Over the next two weeks I will host, with Ms Tracey Mackin, Director of Curriculum, two parent meetings and two student meetings. The purpose of these is to discuss the improved reporting models we are proposing for 2015. We generated invitations to attend these meetings through a random selection process. The feedback we receive will be used to refine the models even further, before making a final decision about which model to follow. In keeping with our assessment principles we intend to de-emphasise the focus on grades, report more frequently, and use the information in reports to inform future learning, rather than sum up the semester. Academic Success Awards Assembly In a school were academic success is celebrated, we were delighted to take the opportunity do so again at our annual Academic Success Awards Assembly on Monday 4th August. At this time of the year we celebrate those students who have been able to maintain consistently high results across the semester. We would like to give all students an award for their progress and achievement but due to time constraints in a 50 minute assembly, we have kept it to approximately 10-15% of each cohort. Thank you to Ms Leanne Ansalde, Director of House and Ms Juliea Slywka for the work they have done to collate the results and prepare the certificates for the celebration and congratulations to the students. Growing Tall Poppies “The Growing Tall Poppies” (GTP) program is a collaboration between Santa Maria College Northcote, supported by the Catholic Education Office Melbourne (CEOM), and the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-ray Science (CXS), a multi-university and interdisciplinary research organisation headquartered in the School of Physics at the University of Melbourne. This year, three students from Nossal applied to become part of this program. From a large number of applicants throughout Victoria, we are proud to announce that: Devam Modi is our successful applicant for 2014. One of only ten students awarded this fantastic opportunity, Devam will be aligned with research scientists based at the University of Melbourne. Devam will participate in a 5-day science immersion program during the September school holidays. He will then bring his learning and experiences back to Nossal and help his schoolmates to further enhance their science understandings. William Tran and Timothy Chen have both been awarded Honourable Mentions for this program. Only 17 students across Victoria have been awarded this privilege. Will and Tim will both participate in a 5-day science immersion program in 2015. National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) The NYSF is an annual competition run by Rotary. It aims to enable high-achieving science students to participate in a summer school where they will meet with real scientists, work in university or industry laboratories and generally have a great science experience. We are pleased and proud to announce that Krshna Balakrishnan and Vignesh Muruganandam have been awarded places in the 2015 NYSF Summer School. Well done guys! Science Olympiads Australian Science Innovations offer students the opportunity to participate in the Australian Olympiads in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Over the next two weeks, selected Year 10 and 11 students from Nossal will sit the Olympiad exams with the aim to be chosen for the Olympiad Summer Schools next January. These are extremely challenging examinations. We wish these students all the best in their endeavours. Science Week Week 8 of Term Three has been chosen as the week to celebrate Science this year at Nossal. Across the week, we will run various events including the Nossal Physics Film Festival, a science photography competition, chemistry demonstrations and a visit from the Snake Man. More news regarding this exciting event will be published on NEO. Diane Latham, Head of Science Domain Language Day - Ms Kellan Wakeman On Monday the 21st July Nossal had our second Language Day. On the day all students from 9-12 studying a Language through Nossal rotated through a range of French or Japanese activities, run by external experts and their regular teachers, designed to immerse them in the language and culture of their chosen subject, and enhance their language study. Activities ranged from French boxing, theatre and cooking,. to Japanese Aikido, calligraphy and flower arranging. Here are some student perspectives on the day. Japanese flower arranging French boxing Ridna, 9O & Claudia 12N cooking french truffles Here’s some writing from students about Language Day: Language Day-A French Perspective The glorious 21st day of July marked the day Nossal had its 2014 Language Day. Throughout this day, all students studying a Language at Nossal participated in a range of activities relating to their language endeavours, but ultimately to have a fun filled day! Being a French student myself, let me reflect on just a fragment of the many amazing events that took place that day, from the French perspective… All of the French studying students were placed into groups which consisted of Year 9 students all the way to Year 12 students. These groups rotated across scheduled workshops and completed many interesting tasks including French Boxing (La Boxe Française / La Savate – led by our very own language assistant Mme Marjorie Antoine), French Truffle making, Poster Making, building model Eiffel Towers, and a very enjoyable French Trivia! I would also like to acknowledge and thank the team at Melbourne French Theatre Inc. who came and mentored the French students to perform a French play acted out by the students themselves! The day was an overall success and was a wonderful experience, thus I would like to thank all the Language Staff and their helpers for making such a day possible! Vive la France! By Muzamal Ibrahimi 2014 This term, Nossal once again held its annual Language Day. A fun time was had by all! Those students studying Japanese and French were able to leave their standard classes for the day to participate in cultural activities. Personally, being involved with the Japanese group, I enjoyed traditional Japanese drumming, calligraphy, flower arranging, a film, and the martial art known as ‘aikido’. Although it is hard to pick a favourite activity, eventually I decided upon the traditional drumming, or ‘taiko’, in which professional drummers taught us how to successfully play the drums. Riley Baird 11M Alan Damen 10R liked Language Day this much! Pictured above: Riley Baird 11M and Vihan Liyanage 9N Year 9 City Week - Ms Catherine Loel The Year 9 students have begun working on their City Week “Big Questions” and are keen to get their investigations underway in Melbourne. Groups of 4 students will be working together to investigate their question and will be using the city as a resource that will assist them in responding to it. Staff will be working alongside the students to support and guide them through their investigations. While students will have the freedom to move about the city as they research and build their knowledge of their chosen area, these teachers will be located at clearly defined check-in points throughout the city and will be available to assist them as the need arises. Students in MNOP tutorial groups will attend their City Week from Tuesday 12 August to Friday 15 August, while students in QRST tutorial groups will attend their City Week from Tuesday 19 August to Friday 22 August. Upon their return from City Week, students will consolidate their learning by synthesizing their findings into a final audio/ visual that will be presented to their peers in the last week of the term. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me by phone at school or through my email: Catherine.loel@nossalhs.vic.edu.au Catherine Loel Director of Year 9 Music - Mr Sasha Stella August is a very busy month for music at Nossal Students in vocal and instrumental ensembles have been practising at lunchtimes and after school in preparation for The House Music Competition to be held at Sir Robert Blackwood Hall on Thursday August 28. Nathan recently distinguished himself by gaining his L.Mus.A. (pianoforte) Diploma. Esha Zhang, Qi Wei Wang and Nelson will also perform a piano solo at The House Music Competition. The Nossal Orchestra and Quintet has been rehearsing diligently in preparation for competition at The Grand National Eisteddfod of Australasia on August 30 and September 3. This is one of Australia’s largest music competition with entrants from across Australia and overseas competing. Our Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Band and Choir are preparing for this year’s second Music Assembly on September 9, all parents and friends are invited. Next Thursday 14 August Chris Gu (year 9) is giving a solo recital of his A.Mus.A.(pianoforte) program at lunchtime in MU1. This follows a stunning performance at our recent Awards Assembly where Chris displayed a combination of technical mastery and musicality. Again, all parents and friends are invited. Mr. Stella, Director of Music Information Resource Centre - Ms Kamla Reddy “LIFE OF GALILEO” PERFORMANCE AT NOSSAL HIGH SCHOOL The IRC had arranged for a group of actors from Complete Works Theatre Company to visit the school to perform an abridged version of the play “Life of Galileo” for all year 11 English students. These students are studying this play as part of their VCE English course. After the performance the actors spent time discussing issues such as “conflict” in the play and answered the many questions that the students asked. It is hoped that the performance and the discussion would help students to better understand the play and the themes of “conflict” in the text. The photo to the right show the actors performing the play LITERATURE CIRCLE CLUB MEETING The Literature Circle Club met on Tuesday 29th July in the IRC and participated enthusiastically in some very interesting discussion about great books being read.
