The demonstrations were done by student volunteers, based on their passion for healthy eating. As part of a NIU class they committed to one demonstration. But, then came monthly during the 2010 season. They developed educational materials and a take home flyer with recipes and games. They were well received and published an article on their lessons learned in a professional journal. Anecdotally, they were able to show that their demonstrations impacted what was sold at the market. 6 Sp ots NIU received Fit Kids 2020 funding to purchase a portable 3 section sink to enable them to meet sanitation requirements. They continued the demonstrations during the 2012 season. NIU recently received Fit Kids 2020 Funding to facilitate the development of a NIU School of Family, Consumer and Nutrition Sciences class, Nutrition and Community Food Systems. This will allow future dietetics students to understand key community-based promotion of nutrition for healthy lifestyles and food supply issues. The local food system in Kane County, including the Farmers’ Markets, will be part of the learning experience. As part of the class, community based projects will continue to benefit County residents. 7 Faith Community Our mission is to create a network of like minded communities to promote healthy eating and active living, recognizing the core vale of caring for the body, mind and spirit, is shared by members of each Kane County Faith Community Acco mp l is h m e n ts • Churches adopting healthy food policies • Faith communities providing garden plots for the community Economic Strength Our Mission is to examine how families, employers and local farmers can support the economic strength and healthy living of families. (Anticipated first year revenue is only about $100/ market in Illinois). This is new revenue for local producers. 8 ots 9 Built & Natural Environment Family, Culture & Community Our mission is to create opportunities for kids to live healthy and active lives by identifying and reducing barriers to physical activity by protecting and enhancing open spaces for casual and directed experiences, and by facilitating the means for obtaining access to healthy and locally-grown foods. Our mission is to influence family level strategies that include systems, policy, and environmental changes directly impacting family behavior so that families choose healthy eating/active living over unhealthy eating/ sedentary behavior. In 2012, fortyfive of the plots were leased to World Relief Refugees. A volunteer from World Relief spearheaded the effort, soliciting a local church for soil amendments, getting a master gardener to teach a weekly class at the garden site, and making sure that all participants had the necessary funds to lease a plot. Different nationalities were represented but many were from Burma, where farming is a way of life. Gardeners, wearing traditional clothing, often walked or biked to the garden. Many used plants that were part of their food tradition and non-traditional equipment. Machetes were a common sight. Twigs were used as plant supports. Multi-generations tended the sites; children, adults, and seniors. We have already been asked if the plots will be available in 2013. • Addition of playground equipment at schools, parks and low income housing • Adding street signage to show designated safe routes for walking or biking to schools • New development that will combine a sustainable farm and residential housing • Cooperative land use agreements for gardens and farmers Elgin Community Garden Network Continues to Expand Br ig ht • Kane County long range plans for Health, 2040 Land Use and Transportation focus on Healthy People, Healthy Living and Healthy Communities Sp ots Elgin Community Garden Network, (ECGN), has received 2 $10,000 Fit Kids 2020 Implementation grants to expand the community garden network in Elgin. The ECGN leveraged the successes from the Fit Kids 2020 Implementation Grant and received an additional $20,000 in grant funding and donations. They have expanded their partnerships and now include local corporations, businesses, the City of Elgin and U-46 School District. In partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin, the ECGN became the first community organization to lease a vacant lot from the City for a community garden. The ECGN has 27 garden locations, including low income neighborhoods, public property, restaurants and schools. Some gardens supply local pantries and soup kitchens with food. In low income neighborhoods, the produce is used by the local residents. Without further Fit Kids funding, the ECGN is looking to expand its reach and opportunities in 2013. A few years ago the same piece of land was a garbage filled vacant lot, a community eyesore. Recently, Aurora Township cleaned up the parcel and added recreational soccer fields. The soccer fields are used regularly by teams, leagues and local residents. However, during soccer games, the siblings of the players had nothing to do. Parents often placated the siblings by feeding them junk food. Aurora Township applied for a Fit for Kids Implementation Grant to add a large playground unit to the land. The project was funded. Residents participated in the design and building of the playground. Local businesses donated supplies for the installation. A local union donated their time and expertise to install the playground. The playground is used during soccer games as anticipated providing physical activity instead of unhealthy eating. And the playground has also become a destination for local residents to play even when there are no soccer games or practices. 12 13 Call to Action Implementation Partners • City of Elgin Parks and Recreation Elgin Pedestrian Advisory Committee To achieve our goal of reversing childhood obesity by 2020, each of us must participate in implementing the strategies identified in the Plan.
