Welcome Campers
Dear Friends,
I had an amazing summer last year at JCC Camp Tzofim and am so excited for another summer of
songs and skits; Counselor Survivor; day trips as well as our overnight adventures; Special Friday
programs and the Mac-O-Peel (camp-wide messy relay race). Summer camps support campers to
develop self-confidence, leadership skills, and lifelong friendships. Camp made a huge difference in
my life and I strive to give your camper a meaningful experience this summer.
What I love most about JCC Camp Tzofim is that it offers an intimate, traditional camp experience
where a kid can be a good, old fashioned camper all summer long.Through ‘traditional’ camp activities
like arts and crafts, sports and swimming lessons, camp skits and singing, and overnight camping for
the older campers, JCC Camp Tzofim allows campers to discover new interests and friendships, test
personal limits, and most importantly HAVE FUN!
JCC Camp Tzofim is thriving in our new home at Redwood Day School, nestled in a quiet Oakland
neighborhood surrounded by trees, parks, and tons of open space. Camp continues to be jam-packed
with ample time for high-energy fun as well as the down time needed for making friendship bracelets,
playing group games with counselors, going swimming in pools and lakes around the East Bay,
sleeping under the stars, hikes, and simply hanging out with friends.
We are really excited about our our Overnight Adventure Trips for our middle school students.
Camping in the beauty of Northern California mixed with adventures like rock climbing, river rafting,
hiking and biking -- summer adventure doesn’t get much better than this. We’ll even be connecting up
with other local JCC’s overnight adventure programs for some of our trips.
I am thrilled to be part of the 30+ year history of the JCC Camp Tzofim community and I invite you to
join me for another unforgettable summer.

What Happens at Camp Tzofim...
Traditional, good old-fashioned
summer camp fun:
Remember all the great kid things you did when you were at summer camp?
At Camp Tzofim, we want our campers to have a similar experience with lots
of swimming, ga-ga (Israeli dodge-ball) and kumzits (all-camp assemblies).
Kids get to show off their special abilities at our talent shows. And to make
camp even more fun, our campers compete in the Camp Tzofim Maccabiah
(our take on the Jewish Olympics).
Summer camp means hanging out in
nature (Teva):
We believe that hanging out in nature is a must. At Camp Tzofim, we bring
together traditional Jewish values of respecting the earth with modern day
practices of zero impact camping and nature games. In our spacious location
in a redwood-studded, Oakland Hills neighborhood (as well as outings to
Tilden Park and Cull Canyon), we’ve got more campfires, hiking, overnight
camping and mountain biking planned than you can shake a stick at.
The skills you won’t find in any classroom:
Lifelong connections are easily made in the relaxed atmosphere a traditional summer camp provides.
Our goal is to allow our campers to develop the many skills needed to be successful in all aspects
of life. We use our many years of experience in leadership and team building training to inspire and
support our campers to be mensches (outstanding people). All ages groups explore concepts of Tikkun
Olam (repair of the world). We offer our older groups (the Chaverim and Habonim campers) handson opportunities such as working on a real farm or helping to clean up a natural habitat (river and
trail maintenance). Our CITs (counselor-in-training) learn leadership, mentoring, and organizational
skills. We also offer some of our older groups Adventure & Ropes Course Challenges, to build both
character and a little muscle.
A little Jewish culture:
Camp Tzofim aims to give campers a sense of Judaism in a whole new way.
Our campers explore Jewish culture and ethical traditions through service
projects, song, art, dance, and drama. Our Shabbat program on Friday
ends the week on a joyous note, celebrating our community by bringing all
campers together to experience Jewish culture and history. We also invite
our families to join in and celebrate Shabbat with us. Camp Tzofim has a
long history of serving diverse families of many configurations -- you need
not be Jewish to love our camp.

Developing imagination and creativity:
Camp has always had a magical aspect to it. We offer the ability to turn a paper
bag into an owl, a well-worn nature trail into a daring adventure into the
wilderness and a third grader into a rock star. Our arts and crafts, music and
nature specialists are here to help turn the ordinary into the extraordinary
and bring a sense of adventure into the everyday.
Doing cool stuff:
Kids crave new experiences, so we plan lots of outings to the Oakland
Zoo, Cull Canyon, Pier 39, Oakland A’s games,Tilden Park and more. And
what’s cooler than camping out? Our Giborims (3rd & 4th graders) go
to Anthony Chabot Park for a one-night camping trip. The Chaverim
(5th & 6th graders) enjoy 2-night camping at different sites in the
State and National Parks System in Northern California. And our
Habonim (7th to 9th graders) will go on three or four-night overnights
all over California. For our younger Rishonim (Kindergarteners) and
Sabra campers (1st & 2nd graders), we have an Extended Evening of
Fun with on-site programs, a sing along, and a BBQ at Camp.
Building special relationships with Camp Tzofim
Counselors:
We believe that summer camps are at their best when campers have
counselors they can trust, and depend on to keep the fun happening all
summer long. We hire counselors and specialists who love working with
kids and have experience in a camp setting. To ensure that our campers
have an opportunity to bond with their counselors and to uphold the
highest quality of safety in our supervision, our counselor-to-camper
ratio is purposefully low (1:6 for entering kindergarteners; 1:7 for entering
grades 1-2 and 1:8 for entering grades 3-9).

We know many family members get excited hearing about the fun at camp, the skits and songs,
and wish for a chance to enjoy it themselves. Bring the whole family to Camp Tzofim for a night to
reconnect with friends and favorite counselors, eat pizza, see kids’ skits, join in camp songs and get
a taste of what camp is like from your camper’s perspective. Come relive some awesome times from
the summer and enjoy a couple more hours at camp with our Camp Tzofim slide show!

Meet the staff...
Courtney Jacobson, Camp Director
Courtney Jacobson returns to JCC Camp Tzofim as Camp Director first joining the Camp Tzofim and
JCC Afterschool-Berkeley family in May 2010. Courtney is originally from Denver, Colorado where
she attended JCC Ranch Camp for over twelve summers and held a variety of positions. At Ranch
Camp, she fell in love with camp and the outdoors and decided to pursue this passion professionally.
Courtney holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in Religious Studies
and Art History. Courtney completed a dual-master’s degree program in May 2010 in Social Work from
University of Southern California and in Jewish Nonprofit Management from Hebrew Union College.
Courtney is thrilled to be with the JCC Afterschool-Berkeley program during the year and have her
third summer at Camp Tzofim.
Reuben Kurs, Assistant Camp Director
Reuben Kurs is our new Assistant Director. This will be his third year with the Camp Tzofim family. In
his first year he served as the Unit Head for Habonim. Last year he joined our administrative team
as the Office Manager. Before joining us he spent 8 years as a swim instructor and life guard for a
summer camp in Connecticut. He is a graduate of Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts with
a Bachelor’s degree in Economics.
Our Counselors
The JCC Camp Tzofim Staff is composed of talented young women
and men who are dedicated to enriching the lives of our campers
and love working with children of all ages. All staff members go
through intensive, ongoing training that strengthens their ability
to help children develop socially, physically and culturally.
Our staff’s priority is the safety and happiness of each child.
Counselors focus not only on creating a safe space for your
child, but also in facilitating friendships and fun for your child.
All our counselors and leadership staff are trained and certified
in CPR/First Aid. They bring rich, varied backgrounds and have
special talents in education, athletics, theater, the arts, dance,
outdoor education and camping, psychology, and Judaic studies.

Groups & Activities...
Our groups and group activities are tailored to the developmental needs of our campers:
RISHONIM (‘Starters’: entering kindergarten):
This program is designed to meet the needs of children in transition from preschool to Kindergarten. With very close supervision of one staff person to
six campers, the youngest campers at Camp Tzofim are gently introduced to
our traditional camp activities and camp ruach (spirit). Camp Tzofim provides
Rishonim campers with age-appropriate activities and as well as time to
recharge each day.
SABRA ALEPH/SABRA BET (‘Natives’: entering
grades 1 & 2):
The Sabra campers spend their days busily engaged in camp activities
that allow them to explore their interests in an encouraging and playful
environment. Sabra campers are divided by grade level in Aleph and Bet
groups. In the afternoons, Sabra campers participate in weekly chugim
(activities) where they can delve deeper into the specialties they love, as well
as explore new interests.
GIBORIM (‘Heroes’: entering grades 3 & 4):
Giborim campers spend their days getting messy, developing new skills,
and having fun with the traditional camp activities and going on fieldtrips
once each week. The program also includes a chance for Giborim campers
to enjoy their first camping experience on a one-night overnight in Anthony
Chabot Regional Park.
CHAVERIM (‘Friends’: entering grades 5 & 6):
The Chaverim Trip & Travel program provides a balance of traditional camp
experiences on-site and exciting off-site trips: a day trip to a local park and a
two-night overnight to a State or National Park in Northern California. Chaverim
campers will experience activities like hiking, team building, swimming, and
BBQs in addition to a ‘Challenge Activity’ on each overnight trip.

HABONIM (‘Builders’: entering grades 7, 8 & 9):
The Habonim Trip & Travel program combines core camp experiences with overnight trips and
social service projects. Each session includes a week on-site at camp with local day-trips. During the
second week of each session, Habonim campers will enjoy a three or four night overnight to a State
or National Park in California.
Session I – Sacramento
Join us for a memorable trip to Sacramento. We will spend Monday at the
JCC getting ready for our trip and then leave for Sacramento. We will go
swimming, hiking, do a service project in Sacramento, and go tubing
down the American River. We will also watch the fireworks and go to
the town fair in Rancho Cordova at Hagan Park to celebrate the July
4th holiday.
Session II – Rock & Ride at Lake Tahoe
We will join other Bay Area JCC’s on this epic excursion. We will
spend Monday getting to know each other and prepping for
the trip. Tuesday thru Friday we will be camping at our favorite
Sugar Pine Point and going rock climbing, mountain biking, and
swimming in the lake.
Session III – Whitewater Rafting Trip
Head up to the Gold Country for some whitewater action on the
South Fork of the American River. Expert guides will navigate the Class
III river and provide beginning kayak instruction. Campers will explore
the California Gold Rush, skip rocks and roast kosher marshmallows on
this exciting excursion. We will join teens from other Bay Area JCC’s on this
trip: We’ll spend Monday getting to know each other and planning activities
for the trip and leave Tuesday for an exciting river adventure.
Session IV - So Cal Extreme - Disney Style*
Head south to soak up the sun! Explore Malibu, Santa Monica, the Museum of Tolerance, along with Disneyland
and California Adventure on a two day hopper pass! Join teens from other Bay Area JCCs on this five-day adventure. The
trip includes one night of camping and three nights at the Merage JCC in Orange County. From the bonfire to making tons of
new friends to the amusement parks, it is sure to be an awesome time!
*This trip will depart Monday for a four-night overnight.
*All Trips are subject to change at JCC Camp Tzofim’s discretion.
GESHER – COUNSELOR IN TRAINING:
Two Session minimum (entering grade 10-11)
Teens entering 10th and 11th grade are invited to join a close group
of peers in an expanded leadership program designed for them to
learn skills in camp counseling, work as a team, and build individual
confidence and more! Participants will work closely with the
younger groups gaining valuable experience by helping counselors
and specialists run activities.The CIT Director will work closely with
the Gesher participants to provide training, lead activities, and
help our CITs experience what it will be like to be a counselor or a
specialist. CITs will also have exciting group activities and a trip at the
end of the summer to celebrate their accomplishments.

A Day in the life of a
Camp Tzofim camper…
Camp Hours/Schedule:
Camp Tzofim begins at 9am and ends at 4pm, Monday - Friday. Extended Care is available from 8-9am
and 4-6pm for an additional fee.

Location:
JCC Camp Tzofim is located at Redwood Day School, at 3245 Sheffield Avenue in Oakland.
Transportation:
Transportation to local parks, overnights, swimming and field trips is on rented buses, mini-vans or
in the JCC-owned 15-passenger California Highway Patrol (CHP) certified vans. Drivers with Class B
certification drive campers to their destinations. Transportation to and from the JCC East Bay’s Berkeley
branch to Camp Tzofim will be provided, FREE. Bus will depart from the Berkeley Branch at 8:45am and
return at 4pm.
Parent Orientation Night:
Come meet your child’s summer camp director, coordinators, and counselors, ask questions and
learn about required paperwork. Bring the kids and let our camp staff lead them in activities during
the orientation.

JCC Membership
The JCC East Bay is a vibrant community agency hosting numerous events, workshops, programs and
activities. To qualify for JCC East Bay membership prices, the family must be a member of the JCC.
The cost of annual JCC membership is $225 for a family membership; $165 for single-parent. This fee
also entitles families to attend events at a discounted rate and receive the membership rate for youth
programs, including our afterschool program, School’s Out programs, Parent’s Night Out, and other JCC
East Bay programs and events.

Art Journeys -- (Mem $165/Non Mem $180)
Art Journeys emphasizes skills in drawing, painting & construction and encourages each child’s
unique interpretation of a variety of subjects. This is a comprehensive art week that expands
horizons by exposing students thru art projects to world cultures, artists, art movements, as well
as favorite animals and characters. Sessions based on such themes as: Meet the Masters, Out of
Africa, Southwest Adventure, Surfing Safari, and Zany Zoo. High quality art supplies are used.

Gaily’s Craft Camp -- (all ages, Mem $135/Non Mem $150)
Gaily’s camp returns for a third year of creativity and fun! With access to high quality materials,
children learn to make almost anything from magnets, stuffed animals and toys, to bags and
dresses. This year the camp will also feature necklaces, rings and earrings from Gaily’s extremely
popular jewelry class. These skills are very easy to learn, and produce spectacular results. Even
young children make beautiful things, either for themselves or people they love.

Gems & Jewels: Making Jewelry -- (ages 6-12, Mem $160/Non Mem $175)
Whether you’re an experienced jeweler or just beginning, this specialty camp takes small scale
sculpture to a new level. We will experiment with making hoop earrings, wire-crimp necklaces,
fimo beads, and more. Our focus will be on playing with making our own beads, how to use tools
safely and effectively for new designs, and how to make one-of-a-kind pieces of art. This class
celebrates making beautiful things, learning how to put colors and shapes together artfully for a
personal sense of pride. This camp is offered twice with different projects each session.

Glitter & Razz: Itty Bitty Arts Camp -- (Boys and Girls ages 4-6, Mem $285/Non Mem $300)
The perfect summer camp for the first time camper! Clear structure, rituals and the magic and
power of play ensure that all children feel safe to express themselves in this creative environment.
Led by a team of highly talented and experienced Glitter & Razz teaching artists, each week
culminates in an original performance that celebrates the “work of our play.”

Go Girls! Summer Theater Workshops -(Just for girls ages 6-11, Mem $625/Non Mem $640-TWO WEEK Camp)
“‘Go Girls!’ It helps us girls try to bring peace to the world.” The super popular Go Girls! Camp is
new and improved and back at the JCC! Led by a team of highly talented and experienced Glitter
& Razz teaching artists, girls use drama, dance, visual art, and music to express their creativity and
explore how girls make friends and stand up for themselves.

Design and build machines powered by alternative energy sources. Race solar cars, build a windpowered turbine, enter the human-powered vehicle competition, and invent a machine powered by
stored elastic strain energy. Instruction provided, but familiarity with LEGO® Technic is desirable.

IncrediFlix: Acting for Flix -(ages 7-12, Mem $160/Non Mem $175, additional $30 production fee collected on first day)
So you want to be on camera? Whether you’re completely new at this, or want to improve your
skills, this camp is designed to bring you to the next level. We have practice casting calls, we have
training, and at the end you’ll make your own commercial! We’ll send it all to you on DVD, so you
have it for your reel or just to use for practice.
IncrediFlix: Animation Flix -(ages 7-12, Mem $160/Non Mem $175, additional $30 production fee collected on first day)
Join us for the ultimate in animation creation. Each day you’ll make a new movie, with different
styles of stop-motion animation. Furniture may run across the floor, clay stars may explode, or
your favorite toy may even come to life! This is the ultimate arts and crafts camp where you will
create, direct, and film in age appropriate groups. All flix will be professionally edited and a DVD
will be mailed to every student.

Your characters can fly over mountaintops, destroy cities, or swim the deepest oceans! In age
appropriate groups, you’ll make a paper-animated flick where you get to create your own character,
build backgrounds, shoot your movie, and provide the voice for your character. All flix will be
professionally edited and a DVD will be mailed to every student.

Are you the next star director? Actor? Writer? Cameraman? Of course you are, and you get to do
it all in these live action flix! You’ll work in groups to make your vision come true in these movies
where you’ll act, write, direct, and more.

We know you love Legos and we know you can create incredible worlds. Now it’s time to bring
those worlds to life in Lego animated flix! We provide the Legos, and you provide your imagination.
Students will create a Lego set with Lego characters for a movie they storyboard, write, shoot,
and voice-over in age appropriate groups. All flix will be professionally edited and a DVD will be
mailed to every student.

Jedi Engineering with LEGO® -- (ages 7-12 Mem $160/Non Mem $175)
Build X-Wings, droids, and palaces inspired by designs made a long time ago in a galaxy far, far
away. Create motorized sand crawlers, drone assembly lines, and Battlecruisers. A new offering
of imaginative and original designs.
Kid's Carpentry -(ages 7-12, Mem $160/Non Mem $175, additional $25 materials fee to be paid the first day of
camp)Kids' Carpentry is designed to teach boys and girls, practical woodworking skills with an
emphasis on the safe use of hand tools. By building a variety of fun projects, children learn a
wide range of valuable carpentry skills such as measuring, fractions, sawing, drilling, rasping,
fastening, sanding, shaping, assembly, and painting. Hand in hand with the practical skills goes a
wide variety of other worthy concepts such as abstract reasoning, applied mathematics, problem
solving, craftsmanship, fine motor skills, respect for tools, and patience.

Pirate Camp -- (all ages, Mem $135/Non Mem $150)
Ahoy young pirates! Get into character and make your own eyepatch, telescope, and sword. Learn
skills like map-making, nautical knot-tying, and ship building. At any time you may find your pirate
hunting for treasure in the park, snacking on hardtack, and linking arms with other pirates to form a
slithering sea serpent. Finally, take a trip down to the Berkeley Marina to see your new ship set sail.
Project Runway -- (all ages, Mem $135/Non Mem $150)
Get in touch with your inner designer and make cool, one-of-a-kind clothes and accessories. We’ll
start with the basics of hand-sewing, choose fabric, cut, pin, and sew our way to a custom-fit
garment. Using stencils, sequins, and felt, we’ll transform an ordinary tote bag and headband into
wearable works of art. We’ll take a trip to the thrift store and use our new skills to give old clothes
a fabulous life. After finishing our work, we’ll display our creations in a glamorous fashion show.
Mad Science: Crazy Chemistry -- (all ages, Mem $160/Non Mem $175)
We’ll explore and create exciting chemical reactions, make colorful concoctions and bubbling brews.
Amaze yourself with magical temperature changing baggie science or growing ghost crystals.
Study the chemistry involved in not-so-simple things like chalk and soap, and even experiment
with the chemistry used by artists, spies and detectives! Chemists bring home a project each day.

Mad Science: Flight Academy -- (all ages, Mem $160/Non Mem $175)
Sign-up for Mad Science Flight Academy and explore the fundamentals of flight. Learn
characteristics of the planets and discover the wonders of the Milky Way. See how air and wind
affect kites, hot air balloons and parachutes. Discover the fundamentals of rocketry, the stages of
rocket flight and experiment with huge water rocket launches. We each build our own launchable
rockets to take home. Take-homes include the new Mad Science Skyblazer rocket, a rubber bandpowered airplane, a kite, a boomerang, a mini flying disc, and more!

Mad Science: Inventors Academy -- (all ages, Mem $160/Non Mem $175)
Each day campers are given a series of challenges they must overcome using basic materials,
simple machines, tips from world famous inventors and the most important thing of all – their
minds. The camp involves a team-based approach to solving problems but will also include
projects like building your own Light Saber, Rocket Launcher and more. Discover and Create! $15
Lab Fee to be paid to the instructor.

Mad Science: NASA Journey into Outer Space -- (all ages, Mem $160/Non Mem $175)
Mad Science and NASA’s after school program is now a summer camp! From our atmosphere
to the outer reaches of our solar system, this hands-on program sends campers on a quest for
exploration! Comets, planets, stars and more are all waiting to be discovered. Learn about the four
forces of flight and the challenges of space travel. Camp includes a take home item every day. Join
us for Earth and Beyond, Astronaut-in-Training, Solar Launch, Eye on the Sky, and Space Voyage!
July 9-13, 1-4pm, Oakland
Mad Science: Secret Agent Camp -- (all ages, Mem $160/Non Mem $175)
The Mad Science Secret Agent Camp is a fun journey into the world of detection, spy science, and
forensics. Campers will examine the science behind the spy tools made famous by the world’s greatest
spies! We will reconstruct activities using scientific methods and use the science of cryptology to
send and decode secret messages. Kids will get a chance to see what can’t be seen by the naked eye
and will follow in Sherlock’s steps to learn what tracks can tell us! Join the Mad Science Bureau of
Investigations to help foil a burglary using state-of-the-art security techniques!
Mad Science: World Scientists -- (all ages, Mem $160/Non Mem $175)
Spend time in the lab learning the tools and techniques that scientists use while conducting
some great hands on projects. World Scientists will conduct solar experiments, explore predator
and prey relationships and investigate food webs. Take a trip into the ocean to learn what an
odontocete is. Discover systems in nature, even make your own paper! Learn animal adaptations
and create an insect habitat. Scientists will also discover what Mr. Owl had on his dinner plate
during the famous owl pellet dissection. It’s a great week of camp!
Role-playing Adventure -- (ages 7-12, Mem $135/Non Mem $150)
Role-playing Adventure offers you the chance to enter a strange world of magic, dragons, knights
and elves through classic paper-and-dice role-playing games. You will get to build your own character
and get a customized character sheet you can take home. You will go on an adventure together
solving puzzles, fighting enemies and completing quests. Role-playing Adventure is also a fun way to
develop reading and math skills, and encourages teamwork, creative problem solving, imaginative
thinking, and good listening.
