Electronic devices are shrinking rapidly to
become lightweight devices that fit easily in any
pocket. This is possible due to the phenomenal
rate at which electronic components are

reducing in size whilst simultaneously
increasing in power.
There is however a ‘thermal challenge’ that
comes with this high power, small size trend.
The processing components of the device
generate significant levels of heat that need to
be controlled to stop the device overheating
and burning out.
Fans create active cooling of components by
expelling warm air and drawing in cooler air.
Fans are often used in conjunction with heatsinks
where superior cooling is required. Different fan
types include:
radial fan
»Axial fans work by drawing air in one side of
the fan and blowing it out the other side.
»Radial fans function by drawing the air in one

and radial principles.
»Blowers work differently as the air is moved,

not via a rotor like the previous types, but with
a long tube where the air is moved around the
tube.
»Micro-blowers function differently again as
they have no moving parts. The air is moved by
activating a piezoelectric ceramic membrane
that oscillates at ultrasonic frequencies so
that air is compressed in a chamber and then
pushed out with high pressure through the
nozzle. These are much smaller in size (around
20x20x1.8mm) compared to even the smallest
compact fans.

Considerations for new designs
»What kind of voltage is required? (AC or DC).
»Which type of fan? (axial, radial, blower, diagonal).
»What size? (e.g. 60x60x25mm).
»What airflow is needed? (e.g. cfm, m³/h, m³/min).
»What pressure is needed? (e.g. bar, Pa, mmH2O, inchH2O).
»Is there a limitation to power consumption? (W).
»Hot air or gas being transported? (plastic or metal materials).
»How much current is available? (A).
»Is there a limitation to noise level? (dB(A)).
»What kind of bearing system? ((full) ceramic; ball; sleeve).
»Any special requirements? (e.g. speed/tacho signal;
temperature control; PWM control; auto restart).
»Are there special assembly requirements? (customised cable
length; connector; cable colour).
maintenance is not possible. Spot cooling can be achieved with
low power consumption but very high pressure.
»Tangential blowers (ebm-papst) offer a significant airflow at low
noise and low pressure.
»Different types of air moving for individual requirements:
• Axial fan: high air flow with medium to relatively high
pressure.
• Radial fan: limited flow rate at high pressure.
• Diagonal fan: high flow rate at relatively high pressure.
• Blower: high flow rate at low pressure.
• Micro blower: limited flow rate at high pressure.
Cons:
»Ball bearings and motors are more susceptible to dust which
can increase noise and shorten lifespan.
»Ceramic bearings are limited to a 38mm axis length max.
»Micro-blowers only suitable for small areas/spot cooling.
»Fans require additional space within the unit which can affect
housing design.
Pros:
»Can be used in conjunction with other cooling devices, e.g.
heat sinks, for improved cooling.
»Different bearings types offer various benefits:
• Ceramic bearings: ultra quiet, sturdy and superior standard
dust protection, lower production costs than ball-bearings.
Ideal for high RPM and very long life (higher than ball
bearings).
• Ball-bearings: long life and robust.
• Sleeve bearing: low production costs, silent.
»Metal housing and impellers (ebm-papst) available for harsh
environments.
»AC compact fans (ARX) can be used from 100-240VAC globally
without modification.
»Micro-blowers (Murata) are ultra small with no mechanical and
moving parts. Ideal for applications where space is limited and
Applications:
»Cooling within housings with small openings and heat
generating components inside.
»Spot cooling semiconductors in units with limited space.
»Cooling micro-processors/CPUs.
»Cabinets for heavy machine control.
»Telecommunication racks/cabinets.
»Battery pack cooling for high power applications (electric
vehicles).
»Cooling converters for solar panels, often mounted under the
roof tiles.
»Air flow for heat exchangers in e.g. passive houses.

Heat sinks, heat pipes, liquid cold plates
Heat sinks are the first choice when it comes to cooling. They
are simple to use, have an easy to understand principle and
are cost effective. If mounted correctly, they offer an almost
failure-free functionality for the lifetime of the application. This
type of cooling is called natural convection as the heat from
the component is exchanged with the cooler ambient air
temperature. A heat sink is physically designed to maximise the
surface area in contact with the air. The same principle is used for
heat pipes and liquid cold plates but with a greater cooling effect.
Pros
» Solid-state, simple construction.
» Different cooling options for heat sinks or fluid supported
systems (heat pipes) depending on space available and the
heat energy needed to be transported.
» Minimum maintenance due to absence of moving parts.
Correct mounting position on the device needs to be checked
periodically.
» Noise free operation.
» Compact cooling solution.
» Custom and OEM designs available.
» Environmentally friendly as no additional power is needed.
» Can be easily combined with fans or other cooling devices
to help improve cooling e.g. special tapes/pads, gap fillers,
greases, heat pipes, graphite sheet.
Cons
» Limited cooling depending on the ambient temperature.
» Space required, especially for heat pipe or liquid cold plate
systems.
Considerations for new designs
»What is the ambient temperature inside the unit/housing?
(Celsius or Kelvin).
»What heat is produced by the semiconductor or component?
(Celsius or Kelvin).
»Thermal resistance of component to heat sink? (Rth).
» Available space inside the unit/housing? (mm).
» What heat energy needs to be transported by the cooling
device? (Watt).

Applications
» All applications where maintenance is not possible or desired.
» Cost effective and simply designed applications with limited
lifetime.
»Military and harsh environments.
» Semiconductor applications and/or computers where no noise
is allowed.
» Telecom battery and outdoor technical cabinets.
» ‘Spot cooling’.
»Medical device and laboratory sample temperature control.
»Liquid and chemical cooling.
» IP68 sealed enclosures.
Thermally
conductive
MATERIALS
Thermally conductive materials such as tapes and pads are an
important step towards improved heat transfer. There is a wide
range of special materials. These materials are used to produce
a far better thermal and mechanical connection between the
components that need cooling and the cooling device itself e.g. a
heat sink, heat pipe.
Considerations for new designs
» Heat to be transferred? (Celsius or Kelvin).
» Ambient temperature?
» Thermal resistance of component on surface to ambient?
» Available space inside the unit/housing?
» Is electric isolation needed?
» Is shock absorption required?
» Is gap filling needed?

Graphite sheets
Graphite sheets are used in a similar way to heat sinks but with a
big difference in physical size and shape. The sheets remove heat
quickly and noiselessly away from any heat source. They can be
used as natural convection or forced convection, in conjunction
with a fan.
Considerations for new designs
» Available space inside the unit/housing?
» Amount of heat to be taken away from heat source?(Ptot).
» Thermal resistance from heat source to heat sink? (RthG/K).
» Ambient temperature? (Celsius or Kelvin).
» Special design/shape necessary?
» Is unit/housing thermally conductive to be used for heat
spreading?
Pros
» Better heat dissipation in plane/horizontal direction compared
to any other metal.
» Sheets have thickness of only 0.08-1.5mm. From 200W/mK up
to 750W/mK in plane and up to 27W/mK through thickness.
» Can be easily shaped and cut like paper or card providing a
high level of customisation. Easily laminated with metal foils,
plastic or elastomers and can be adhesive backed for peel and
stick.
Laminates:
»
• Copper – 0.03 to 0.05mm
• Aluminium – 0.10 to 0.20mm
• Stainless steel – 0.05 to 0.12mm
» Designed to collect heat on one, or several, spots and dissipate
to the housing of the unit e.g. housing of a cell phone or
attached heat sink or heat pipe.
» Customised heat sinks are easy to design if thick sheets are
used as fins attached to a metal plate. This provides a flexible
and lightweight solution (only 25% of copper solution) with
excellent heat dissipation at a low cost.
» Can be stacked with thermal conductive tapes to bridge greater
gaps and absorb more heat than a gap filler could.
8
w w w. a v n e t - a b a c u s . e u
Cons
» Heat dissipation through the material (Z/vertical axis) not as
effective as metal plate.
Limited
dimensions of approx. 1m2.
»
Applications
»Military applications (ARX only).
» Cable boxes/ set-top-boxes.
» Automotive applications.
»LCD flat panel TVs.
»Medical.
Thermo electric products
Thermo electric cooling devices for mass production are relatively
new to the market and currently not at the forefront of people’s
minds. The principle behind these devices uses the Peltier/
Seebeck effect, which is based on the difference of temperature
on different sides of a unit or component, to create heat or to
cool parts. The Peltier/Seebeck cooler is a combination of ambient
temperature, a heat exchanger like a heat sink, the Peltier/
Seebeck module geometry, the thermal load and Peltier/Seebeck
electric parameters.
Considerations for new designs
» Is thermo electric needed to produce heat/cold or to produce
electricity?
» Ambient temperature inside the unit/housing? (Celsius or
Kelvin).
» Heat produced by the semiconductor or component? (Celsius
or Kelvin). The greater the difference between ambient and
component temperatures, the more current can be produced.
» Thermal resistance of component to Peltier/Seebeck element?
» Temperature (hot/cold) to be produced inside unit? (Celsius or
Kelvin).
» Available space inside the unit/housing?
Pros
» Solid-state cooling.
»Reversible output for heating, cooling or target temperature
stabilisation output.
Minimal
maintenance (cooling fans where used are the only
»
electro-mechanical parts).
»Quiet acoustic performance.
» Compact cooling solution.
» Custom and OEM designs available.
» Environmentally friendly.
Cons
» Coefficients of performance of around 0.5 to 0.9, as opposed to
vapour compression systems (up to 5).
Applications
» Any application where maintenance is not possible.
» Fibre optic applications where heat will not affect the
wavelength of the signal.
Military
and harsh environments.
»
Semiconductor
applications and/or computers where a
»
noiseless solution is required.
» Telecom battery and outdoor technical cabinets.
» ‘Spot cooling’.
»Medical devices and laboratory sample temperature control.
»Liquid and chemical cooling.
» IP65 sealed enclosures.
