We hope you had some time to reflect over the special time of Easter and an opportunity to get together with family and friends. We have heaps of things going on this term, from ANZAC day services to our exciting Musical, The Little Mermaid. We would also love for you to attend our parent teacher interviews Wednesday 27 April. This is a great opportunity to seek direct feedback about how your students are travelling at school in their classes. We would encourage you to bring your students along with you and create a three way conversation regarding your students’ progress. ANZAC day is one of the most important national commemorative occasions. At the College we have two Finally don’t forget to get your tickets for the musical NOW! opportunities to be involved in this commemorative reflection. The show is on Friday the 27and 28 May. On Friday 22 we have our ANZAC day service held here at Mr Miles. school beginning at 8:45am. This service is out in the sun at our ANZAC garden so we would encourage the students to be wearing sunscreen and their hats. The service will continue during lesson 1 and finish at 9.30am. Guests are welcome to join us for a morning tea following the service. The students are also invited to our community march in Caboolture, King Street on ANZAC day Monday 25 April. Both services do require the students to be in full formal uniform and have their hat. NAPLAN is coming soon. As you know the students have been continuing to build their skills during the term and they had their practice tests in Term One. The test for Year 7 and 9 will be completed on Tuesday 10 May – Thursday 12 May. If students are absent for these days there will be some catch up time on Friday. If you could encourage your students in preparation for the examinations to get good rest in the evenings and have a healthy breakfast to start the day. 1 FROM THE HEAD OF CAMPUS Welcome back to Term 2 I do sincerely hope you all enjoyed the holiday break and special celebration of Easter. I am so pleased that every year we all have the opportunity to face squarely the faith question of Jesus’ death and resurrection. As a Christian school, we clearly believe that Jesus did rise from the dead and the significance of all that that means on how we live, continues to drive the educational philosophy, the decision making and the day to day teaching at Grace College. to further challenge students to review their effort results in particular, knowing full well that most parents will support the idea that their students should always be putting in their best efforts. It is probably because parents intuitively understand that great effort proceeds great results. It is like the point that Malcolm Gladwell makes in his book Outliers, that it takes about 10,000 hours to be achieve mastery in a field. Mastery in learning and education is indeed a worthy pursuit, so the challenge from me to all students, would be to eliminate ‘C’s’ and ‘D’s’ from the Effort criteria on school reports. I would further invite parents to further explore strategies for pursuing improvement and helping students to progress at the Parent/Teacher/Student interviews coming up on 27 April. This is a great opportunity for us to learn from parents, as to how best we can refine our teaching methods and approaches to suit individual student needs. Highlights Personally I’m looking forward to the musical at the end of May, the Taste and See Days and Twilight Expo, the Murrumba Maths Tournament and remembrance of ANZAC Day. I do wish all those travelling to Moreton Island on the Biology camp all the very best, along with best wishes for our Year 7s and 9s as they prepare for NAPLAN testing. Another busy term of course, but let’s embrace it for the gift and opportunity that is, as we live each day in the hope of Easter and a risen Saviour. Mr Warren Irvine Olympic Success By now you have no doubt heard and celebrated with us the recent success of our students past and present, at the Australian Swimming Championships. We recognise the amazing effort and performance of Madison Thompson who placed second in the 100m Breaststroke age championships as well as putting in a stellar effort in the Open Women’s trial for Rio. There was of course great jubilation surrounding past student Taylor McKeown qualifying results for the Rio Olympics. She has had and continue to have quite an inspiration effect on the college as we celebrate her amazing accomplishments of her goals. Well done Taylor! Term 1 Results Like you, we are very interested in reviewing academic results and student effort from Term 1. Students needing additional assistance will be followed up by either their Home Class Teacher or Curriculum Leaders. I addressed the students on assemblies last week making the point that fine academic results do not just come because they attend a school with a good academic reputation. To use a sporting analogy, we are really only as good as our last game. I went on 2 IMPORTANT INFORMATION COLLEGE CONTACTS Please note that the Student Services email is not a ‘monitored’ email and therefore we ask that you do not reply to any emails received via this method. Throughout the day there was various fundraising events that helped reach the Caboolture Campus goal of $4,500. At lunch time there was hair colouring, fairy floss and a sausage sizzle. These events along with Free Dress day managed to raise $1,268.40. There was also the students who were fantastic in their fundraising efforts. Ten students and one teacher took part in the shave this year and as a group managed to raise $4,423.70. This made Grace – Caboolture reach a total of $5,692.10, a fantastic effort! Eight of the ten students managed to raise over $200 each. The top three fundraisers this year were Emily Bugg ($806), Lachlan Doe ($695) and Denique Brittingham ($553). I was blown away by the generosity of students, parents and staff who donated to this worthy cause. It was great seeing students on the day donate money because they could see the difference it would make. Well done Grace Caboolture! The ANZAC called Little The Anzac called Little A remarkable story from World War I involved a man named Little – Lieutenant E. Maurice Little. From Queensland, Lieutenant Little fought at Quinn’s post, Gallipoli. Quinn’s Post was the most advanced and fiercely contested post on the Anzac line with trenches separating Turkish and Australian forces as little as seven metres apart. In mid-May 1915, Turkish forces stormed the Australian line at Quinn’s post. In defence, Lieutenant Little threw crude bombs by hand (jam tins packed with explosives detonated by a burning fuse) into the ‘no man’s land’ that Turkish forces ran across. Tragically for Lieutenant Little, one such bomb (or a Turkish bomb he was returning) exploded in his hand shredding his face, blinding both eyes, wounding his knee and ultimately requiring the amputation of his right hand and wrist. Through medical aid Little survived and began the slow process of recovery. The remarkable thing about Lieutenant Little’s story was the indomitable attitude with which he responded. Despite horrific injuries he maintained a cheerful spirit, strengthening fellow soldiers with encouraging words, dictating poetry, learning Braille and upon return to Australia, even urging more men to enlist in the Australian forces. His story also took a romantic turn, with Lieutenant Little marrying Bessie Crowther, the nurse who cared for him through his recovery. This Anzac’s name may have been ‘Little’ but his character was enormous. In his poem titled Since God is Just, Little articulated the source of his strength; a faith in Christ reminiscent of St Paul who wrote “ I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Phil 4:13) May the concluding stanza from Little’s poem inspire your faith this Anzac day: Man is not wrapped in mortal clay alone, Like some poor crumbling edifice of stone, God gave him hope, in God he puts his trust And he will live again, since God is just. Some universities also have different entry requirements for Indigenous students. Some universities have entry pathways to their postgraduate medical course for Year 12 graduates provided you complete a relevant undergraduate degree at their institution. Each year, members of the College Leadership Team report on their particular focus areas of the Strategic Plan (Leadership and Management, Spiritual Growth and Pastoral Care, Staff Development, Curriculum and Campus Development and Finance), followed by presentation and discussion of particular issues of interest. This year, group discussion will focus on the Future Vision for Rothwell Campus. All the hard work students have been putting into training will be coming into play for the upcoming Inter-House and District Cross Country events. Well done to those St Paul's GSP Runners who participated in the St Paul's Cross Country last Thursday. Kiarra (Head Coach) was extremely pleased with how everyone ran and was even more impressed that eight GSP students managed to get a top 3 finish! It is great to see that all their hard work has paid off with such pleasing results. It is the Grace Cross Country on the 19 April and we are looking forward to seeing our students strive for their best. Just a reminder that training sessions are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the rest of Term 2. Monday and Wednesday training is on the Grace Main Oval and Friday training is at St Paul's. Sessions begin at 7am. The focus will be split after this week as there will be some students training for District Cross Country and others beginning to work on Athletics Track events. All students of any running ability are welcome to join in this free of charge program.
