Welcome To Flowood!
As Mayor of this City, I offer you
a warm welcome to Flowood.
Happy
Independence
Day!
Flowood is located in Rankin County, east of Jackson, the
Capitol of Mississippi. Because of its strategic location,
Flowood is easily accessible by Interstates 55 and 20, as well
as the Jackson International Airport which is located in the
heart of Flowood. Lakeland Drive (Hwy 25) is the main eastwest corridor of the city and is one of the fastest-growing
commercial areas in the state. Diversified with industrial,
medical, retail, office and residential areas, Flowood is ideal
for both businesses and families.
Safety is a priority in Flowood. The crime rate here is extremely low, due in large part to our professionally trained
police department which utilizes state-of-the-art law enforcement techniques that maintain the safe “hometown” feeling
we are proud of. Our new state-of-the-art fire and training
facilities are unlike any other in the state. Businesses will be
glad to know that we have a fire rating of “four”. This rating
allows savings on insurance premiums. We are one of only
four cities in the state of Mississippi with this classification.
Gary Rhoads,
Mayor

You will find plenty to do in our town. Our project of pride is
Winners Circle Park, an approximately $4 million mid-city
community park that features exercise stations, a landscaped
walking track, tennis courts and an amphitheater. This park is
often the focal point of our many community events, all free
of charge and open to the public. A new 40 acre nature
park is just past WCP. It has an important educational component, a place where “city kids” can learn about trees,
plants and wildlife. It has extensive walkways through the
woods with markers for native tree and plant species, a managed lake with waterfowl, and an amphitheater for outdoor
classes, presentations and small public events. We can’t leave
out our new bike trail that runs along Liberty Road. Golfers,
the Refuge is one of the state’s premiere public golf courses,
and is convenient to office and commercial areas.
All of this did not happen by accident. The Board of Aldermen has been dedicated in working with the Mayor’s office
to demonstrate a pro-business and pro-family philosophy.
What is good for families is good for business - and what is
good for business can also benefit families. Every opportunity for growth is viewed as an opportunity to improve the
quality of life for our residents - as well as our corporate citizens.
Please come and visit our city. I must warn you however,
if you stay very long you are going to want to relocate
your family and business interests to Flowood!
Please join us in Flowood anytime.

Firehouse Subs Donates Life-Saving
Gear To Flowood’s Fire Department
The Flowood location of Firehouse Subs, owned
locally by franchisees William Craig and Denton
Rogers, hosted a ceremony on Tuesday, May 24,
in recognition of a donation of
over $19,000 worth of rescue
equipment to the Flowood Fire
Department.
Since that time, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety
Foundation has donated more than $18 million dollars to communities across 45 states and Puerto Rico.
In Mississippi, they have donated
more than $168,663.
The money comes through each
restaurant recycling its pickle
buckets and selling them to its
customers for a $2 donation.
“Other ways are to have donation canisters at the counters for
change or to have customers
round up their tickets to the next
dollar as a donation. Its money
coming directly back to the
community,” added Conklin.
“The money,” said David Conklin,
area representative for Firehouse
Subs, “is to be used to purchase
equipment which will help stabilize
vehicles involved in accidents,
allowing first responders to safely
reach vehicles to safely provide lifesaving help.”
The gift was a set of four adjustable supports,
which can not only secure overturned vehicles,
but can also be used to stabilize any overhanging
object that may cause danger to rescue personnel such as collapsed buildings or fallen trees.
Thank you, Firehouse Subs, for the support you give
our firefighters nationwide, and especially for your
life-saving gifts to Flowood. You’ve made Flowood’s
best even better.
The donation came through the Firehouse Subs
Public Safety Foundation, a fund started in 2005
after Hurricane Katrina destroyed the Pearlington,
Ms Fire Department along with all of its equipment.
At the time, Firehouse Subs donated an old fire truck
used by the company for promotions.

Mayor’s Cup Benefit Golf Tournament
The Annual Mayor’s Cup Golf Tournament is
held each May at the Refuge Golf Course.
One of Flowood’s major public events, the twoday event is a major fundraiser for a selected
beneficiary each year. Proceeds from the Tourney
have generated almost $1 Million in benefits that
have helped feed the poor, educate our youth,
provide care for the disadvantaged, increase
safety and security for our citizens, and generally
enhance the quality of life for us all. The beneficiary this year was “Safe Families For Children”,
to help them start their local chapter.

The Chamber of Flowood proudly sponsors this
annual event featuring tastings from local restaurants and specialty stores, live music and activities
for the children. The Taste of Flowood offers an
opportunity for the community to sample
Flowood's many dining options. The event has
grown each year and has become one of the
Chamber's largest spring events. Information
about upcoming Chamber and City events can be
found on their websites.

The Annual Flowood Family Festival
and Arts and Crafter’s Fair
Of the many free events that the City of Flowood
offers each year, The Flowood Family Festival is surely
the most prominent and popular.
Held at Flowood’s Liberty Park and coordinated by
Flowood Parks and Recreation Department, the Festival
is probably the largest free event held in the entire
Metro area. Every year the event opens with family
and kids activities - Space Jumps, Slides, Obstacle
Courses, Petting Zoo, Pony Rides, Train Rides, Kids
Karaoke, plus midway-style food and games. This year,
in conjunction with the festival was the 12th Annual
Arts and Crafter’s Fair that featured impressive artist and
crafters from all around the Mississippi area.
The music began with opening performances from
Cassie Means, Burnham Road, & Jeff Bates.
At 8:00 the feature act
JOSH TURNER took the
stage and kept the crowd
jumping for hours. Turner
is known for his hits “Your
Man”, “Why Don’t We Just
Dance”, “Firecracker”,
“Would You Go With Me”,
“All Over Me”, and others.
Growing every year,
the crowd for 2016 was
estimated to be around
10,000. Wow!
And as usual, the Grand Finale Fireworks Display
provided a dazzling finish to the area’s most exciting
annual event.
Like all City-sponsored events, the entire affair was
open to the public, and free of charge.

UNIQUELY FLOWOOD:
Pediatric and Special Needs
Dentistry with a Southern Smile
“My practice serves all children of all ages, but when
it comes to special needs dentistry, I’ve found that it
takes a special character and love in a health care
provider. Most pediatric dentists receive the training
and education, however, one must have a passion
for these special, unique children for them to be a
thriving part of your practice.”
For most of us, the pathway to our eventual career
is a curvy, tangled road at best. But, for Dr. Tiffany
Green of Southern Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, it was
nothing short of a straight line to her goal.
“My staff is a huge part of what makes it easy for
me to see these special needs patients - they are
truly fantastic at caring for and loving each of these
children. Our goal is to build quality, long-lasting relationships with these children and their families.
Each staff member contributes to the team by sharing different qualities and strengths. We try to pair
each special needs child with the same health care
provider every visit. This creates a routine which I
believe is a key in creating positive visits and experiences now and in the future.”
For Dr. Green and her staff at
Southern Smiles, it’s about striking a balance. “I feel blessed to
have the opportunity to treat
many beautiful special needs children; however, I know not everyone coming into our office has a
special needs child. Our goal is
blending worlds together to meet
the needs of each child and their
family.”
“I was one of those crazy kids
who, if you asked me at the age
of four what I wanted to be when
I grew up, I would have said, ‘I
want to be a dentist.’ Even back
then, I thought going to the dentist was the best thing ever!”
“When I was an undergraduate at
Mississippi College,” Dr. Green
continued, “I thought about moving into medicine or pharmacy, but thankfully everything led me back to dentistry. After four years of
college, I completed dental school at the University
of Mississippi Medical Center. I then completed at
two-year residency in pediatric dentistry at the University of Florida. I got training that equipped me in
education and confidence to treat both healthy and
special needs children.”
“Most pediatric dentists are equipped to some level
to deal with special needs children, but your comfort
level and knowledge would depend on your experience in residency,” commented Dr. Green.
“I saw different diagnosis in my patient population
during my residency. I treated children with cancer,
Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, random genetic
disorders, etc. I also had to spend part of my residency on day-rotations seeing adults with special
needs at a place in Florida called Tacachale. It is the
oldest and largest community for Floridians with developmental disabilities.”
14
“Every parent has questions and concerns regarding
their child. Therefore we view each patient as a
unique individual. I feel a responsibility to make a
positive impact in the lives of these kids and their
families. Most of the time, I never know the magnitude of my influence. However, in the time I am
given, I know it is my opportunity to make a lasting,
positive impact in their lives.”

LIBRARY SUMMER READING
Central Mississippi Regional Library
System, The Friends of Flowood
Library, and the City of Flowood are
proud to introduce the first of many
annual events centered around both
a New York Times best selling novel
and our unique community.
Based on the American Library
Association's One Book, One
Community Project designed to
enhance communities through
literacy, Flowood Reads is a
city-wide book experience, designed
to move readers beyond the book
and upcoming film and into a
community of like-minded individuals.
Starting in September 2016, the
Flowood community will be welcomed
to the library and introduced to our
first city-wide read: Miss Peregrine's
Home for Peculiar Children
by Ransom Riggs.
Flowood Reads is an immersive
reading experience that includes
three and a half months of contests
and programs centered around this
amazingly successful, inspiring and
influential book.
Following in August, patrons will be
encouraged to read the book, see the
film, and engage in six community
events centered around the world
created by Mr. Riggs...
And then...

Flowood Parks & Recreation...
When it comes to
having fun in the sun,
there’s no place
better than the parks
of Flowood.
The crown jewel of
Flowood’s Parks and Recreation Department is Winner’s Circle Park, located on
Old Fannin Road in front of
Flowood Elementary School.
Winner’s Circle recently underwent a multi-million dollar upgrade, including
three covered playground areas, each designed for
a particular age group. Children 2 and under, 2 to
5, and 5 to 12 years of age are able to play on
equipment designed specifically for their enjoyment
and safety.
Along with the playground, the five-acre park features lighted tennis courts, open-air pavilions with
picnic tables, a center-court with picnic tables, a halfmile walking track, three arbors for rest and relaxing, and a spectacular amphitheatre with clock
tower for Flowood’s many public events. During
the summer months, Winners Circle Park also hosts
Movies N’ Moonlight, where parents and kids can
enjoy family-style movies in the great outdoors. This
very popular annual happening is brought to
Flowood through a partnership with the Chamber
of Flowood and other local corporate sponsors.
To minimize safety concerns, the play areas are surfaced with a poured-in-place recycled rubber material that provides a soft, bouncy surface designed to
cushion falls from the highest point of the playground equipment. The surface also makes the
playground area handicapped accessible, according
to the Americans with Disabilities Act.
18
www.MyFlowood.com
Start with Winner’s Circle Park and the Nature Trail!
For those who prefer to be a little closer to the abundance of natural beauty central Mississippi has to
offer, the 40-acre Nature Park is located adjacent to
Winner’s Circle on Flowood Drive. Inside the main
entrance is a rest area with covered picnic tables,
water fountains and restrooms. Several covered
pavilions provide picnic spots and relief from the
sun. The primary building inside the park is an
open-sided classroom
that features soaring
overhead birdhouses,
and provides an expansive view of the
park’s main focal
point – a 10-acre central lake and fountain.
Throughout the Park are
well-designed directional
signs, small placards identifying various flora, and several educational panels to
inform the visitor about native wildlife that occupy the
site. The planners have also
built “natural habitats” for
assorted waterfowl, birds,
ground-dwellers and even
bat-houses.
The lake provides natural habitat for ducks and other waterfowl, as well
as native amphibians and reptiles. A paved, distance-marked walking trail runs exactly one mile
from the parking lot around the lake and into a
wooded area on the rear of the park. There the trail
weaves through a mature hardwood forest with
wooden benches and picnic spots accenting the
way. The path then returns to the lake at a beautifully designed overwalk, designed to give the traveler a birds-eye view of a wetlands area, and a
striking panorama of the entire development.

Liberty Park, and Our Walking/Biking Trails
More structured physical activity is often planned at
Liberty Park. This facility features a four-plex lighted
softball complex with state of the art concession
area, restrooms, and press box, along with four
Olympic-sized soccer fields which can be broken
down to fit different size age groups. This 40-acre
property is designed to accommodate most any activity for all imaginations and groups. The City has
recently expanded the soccer fields, and enhance
parking for the complex.
There’s plenty of trail mileage for those who prefer
to see the sights of the city, as well! The newly-landscaped multi-use path from Liberty Park to Winner’s Circle will soon be extended all the way to
Hugh Ward Boulevard, where it will connect to the
existing walking trail there. The trail from Spillway
Road down Old Fannin Road is now complete,
which connects to the trails at Winner’s Circle Park.
So come on out and enjoy some of
the best public parks to be found
anywhere!

Remote Control Indoor Park
One of the most unique and really fun ways to pass
the time in Flowood can be found at the Flowood
R/C Indoor Park. For those who are not familiar, this
is a track for remote control vehicles of all sorts. On
any given day you can find people trying out new
toys or even racing in leagues at the indoor track.
Never tried your hand at running a remote control vehicle? Never fear! Flowood R/C Indoor Park
has you covered. You can rent a car or truck and try
out some laps.
The Refuge Golf Course
But, be warned – you might go straight to Hobbytown and purchase one for yourself! You will be
provided with a Short Course Truck and a lipo battery for $25 which should give you about 30-45
minutes of run time. And, bring a buddy so you
can race each other around the track!
So, if you’re looking for some fast fun in
Flowood, call the guys at Flowood R/C Indoor Park.
They’are also equipped to host your next party!
Visit: www.flowoodrc.com or 601-939-5048.
Nestled in the pines just off Airport Road hides
one of the great treasures of Flowood; The Refuge
Golf Course. Originally opened in October of
1998, The Refuge quickly gained acclaim as the
“Best Purely Public Golf Course in Mississippi.”
Known throughout the Magnolia State and beyond for the impeccable conditioning of the
course and the outstanding customer service, The
Refuge truly provides the daily fee golfer with
country club conditions... without the country club
prices!
For junior golfers, there’s even “The Wee Links at
The Refuge,” a three hole course created solely for
the benefit of juniors. In fact, adults are not allowed on the Wee Links without “child supervision!” There’s no cost to play the Wee Links and it
provides an excellent opportunity for children of
all ages to learn the game as it was meant to be
played, without the challenge of playing a regulation course. It’s also a great opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their children while
introducing them to the game. The Refuge is also
the home of the USGA/ LPGA Mary Ann Edge
Junior Golf School of Mississippi.
